I lived in NYC in the early 2000’s and worked in the upscale restaurant industry. I knew a girl back then who had been harassed by Batali while working at the Spotted Pig. Am kind of amazed that it actually finally came to light. This is the norm rather than the exception and is rarely acknowledged. Sad.😢
This is the case with most high profile figures. It was an open secret about Weinstein way back in the early 2000s. Everyone knew about him, you didn't even have to be part of the Hollywood scene or an insider. That's why it's so eye-roll inducing when you hear famous actress' feign confusion and shock at the accusations....they all knew and they all allow it to happen because that person has power and influence.
Yes...so sad.
A Chef sexually harassing staff, and belittling the staff? Nooo way, said every restaurant employee ever. The bigger the Chef gets, the more terrible he becomes. Restaurant 101

I worked for a restaurant chain. I was sexually assaulted by my boss. I went to the regional and national heads of the restaurant chain. I was eventually fired as a “troublemaker”. Two years later the restaurant boss was successfully convicted of sexually assaulting teens who worked for him. The company claimed they had never been contacted or were made aware of any misconduct by this person. It was a complete lie and incredibly insulting considering I had approached them years before and went through all the right channels to seek assistance. Bosses take advantage of their positions because young adults and adults alike rely on the financial aspect of employment.
I see many comments attributing part of the problem to the restaurants not having an HR department, as if that would have made much difference...!!!..It is an overly optimistic view to think that having an HR Department would have made much difference. The simple fact is that in both private business and in government, the primary job of the HR department is to protect the Boss..!!! And the HR is happy to hear the complaints so it can be reported to the Boss and allow strategies to make life difficult for the employees. More often than not, the head of HR, in both private business, and especially in government, are delighted to go to the Boss and present themselves as the protector of the Boss to get higher salary and bounces. In short, the very existence of the HR often fools the employees to believe that they have a safe place to complain about abuse...!!! It is sad and pathetic.
@@theowl3756 please stop spamming the comments with the same comment over and over. Don’t belittle someone else’s experience ESPECIALLY when it comes to abuse.
@@kylieevolved7400 What are you smoking..??? This is not belittling the victims experience. If anything, it is supporting how little help they could get. It is warning the victims that going to HR is not always the best solution, because HR is often protecting the Boss/supervisor. In many cases, the HR is an accomplice in the ongoing criminal conduct.
It’s EVERYWHERE. Very few women go through their life without some form of sexual assault levied against them.
And for some of us it started@ 10 years old by family Friends....

It's awful working for people like this. I'm so glad that people are being able to speak out more about this behaviour. When I was 15, I worked as a waitress and was treated awful by the managers and owners. They treated all the teenagers as if we were second class. The berated us, made inappropriate comments about our bodies, went through our belongings and were just awful. I finally told my parents what was going on. Luckily, my dad is not a hot head. He calmly went in and in front of all the other workers, told them I would no longer be working there. He then proceeded to tell them that he knew how they were treating the teenage girls and that he would take proper steps if he ever heard of any of that happening again. Later the owner brought his car into my dads garage to be worked on. My father told him he would not work on it and that he would not do business with him. The man profusely apologized (probably because he was afraid of word getting out). I'm so proud of my father for taking up for me.
Great father. I'm sorry you and other girls went through this. I'm.a male and I hate when filthy.men think they can do this to women. They need turned in.
@Gigi Eyre, your dad is a stand up guy and as you are, I am proud of him too! 👏
Although I tend to be more on the Gregory Scarpa side (how he dealt with the driver that tried raping his daughter) when it comes to my own daughter I definitely can say you have every right to be proud of your father. Sounds like a good man.
Why did this same exact thing happen to me as well... it shouldn't be this common.
Exactly what I would have done! Told my dad! I’m 41 and I would still tell my dad lol
after looking at comments that say women don't report bc they like/prefer money...or blame them for not reporting to save future victims. These comments are just ignorant. obviously don't understand what its like trying to get a job after being blackballed by you former employer. These crimes are about power, control and fear.

He named the restaurant after himself.

To Celia Goldberg: A restaurant is not the best place to rain down discrimination due to the owner, for when the worker's sue -- it's the end of the whole business. Eateries are too mom-and-popish to survive the big hits. When the workers complain and repine -- they lick themselves! (Pardon the pun.)

Celia Goldberg i was thinking the same thing! 😡😡😡🖕him!!
I’m so tired of this… As a 65-year-old woman I honestly don’t know any woman that hasn’t been sexually harassed assaulted, harassed, or raped. When will this end? It will end when we are 100% intolerant of this behavior and these people are treated as the criminals they are. No amount of money or “stature“ should save these people. They need to stand trial and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. To anyone chastising women for not speaking up in the moment have no concept of what women in these circumstances deal with…
Only if you saw this for what it is, Evil world, Evil doings....This will not change...It will only get worse. Repent, Jesus Christ is coming. Once you hear that trumpet roar, it will be to late. Every man will be judged, every rapist, every molesters and the sexually immoral.

"He wanted a place that catered to celebrities." That tells me everything about these guys. Birds of a feather flock together. Sociopaths. As a culture we must stop bullying and stop obsessing about celebrity and fame. As a NYC resident I'm so relieved that I have never supported this slime pit. Truly disgusting. Sometimes I get a certain vibe in an establishment where the staff is drooling over certain people and not others. I never go back.
Top jobs that sociopaths gravitate to: Politicians, Surgeons, Chefs, Preachers etc....any job that they can have power & control over others. Look up the traits of a sociopath. These types are everywhere blending into society but, behind closed doors they are the emotional, mental, verbal, financial & physical abusers. It is believe that 4% of the population is a sociopath or psychopath. All sociopaths also have narcissistic personality disorder. Experts believe that we meet one in passing everyday, whether in a deli line, friends party, at work etc without even realizing it. And experts believe that we have one in our of friends, coworker, or family without even realizing it.
Educate yourself on how to spot one and also look up the “No contact rule” this is the only way to have peace in your life is to follow this rule.
Look up the book The sociopath next door by Harvard Professor Dr Martha Stout (audio version free on the net to listen to), The path forward surviving a narcissist by Lisa Scott (see her site), Lovefraud 10 signs you are dating a sociopath by Donna Anderson. Pass this on to your friends, mother, sister, etc. Education is the only way to stay safe in this dangerous world.
It was extremely brave of these women to come forward (especially on a show like 60 minutes) to tell their story. To expose a sociopath or anyone that harasses others takes a village to get others to notice. These ladies should be proud of themselves for speaking the truth.
@@jansmith9922 actually no they shouldn't be proud because they waited a long time. They reaped the benefits of their fancy jobs at his place and then finally complained after a very very long time and on tv no doubt where they could get more attention and spotlight. There are people who endure much more, suffer much more in life and dont feel the need to go on tv and talk about it. I havent much sympathy. They're not heros. I feel for the woman who was assaulted while passed out and surprised the others who saw it weren't more aggressive about taking a stand for the woman. Secondly, i was a counselor for years with a degree... not everyone who has a high position or a position of power is a psychopath, sociopath or suffers from narcicistic personality disorder. We must be careful when using labels like these. Its not responsible. I see all over the place now about "narcissists, "toxic people," "sociopaths", gaslighting etc. These terms are over used just as "bipolar" was a few years ago. C DuPont I was sexually harrasesed by a manager after having dinner and I drink at a Cristinas restaurant in Forney Texas
I worked in the service industry from the age of 16 to 36 and I have had more sexually inappropriate things said to me by men in positions above me than anyone should ever have to endure. The problem is that server staff are easily replaceable and if it's a restaurant where there is money to be made, there is always someone waiting to be the replacement. So if someone speaks up, they will likely be fired for some bogus reason. And may in fact, have a very hard time getting a position in another restaurant in their area. Everyone knows that managers of different establishments hang out together, party together, speak regularly, and often blacklist employees that are "problematic". As long as restaurants are allowed to continue to pay their serving staff and kitchen staff such low wages, this will continue. There's so many problems with the service industry this is but one of a million.
As you get older they will stop

The current state of the job market. It's easy to say, "Just get another job" but the reality is that's not often an option for a multitude of reasons, the biggest is that a lot of us don't make enough to have that kind of security.

HR's job is to protect the company!! Not the employees.
👏👏👏Yes!! People need to understand this. HR departments can rarely be trusted. I saw too many people's careers crash and burn after going to HR to report legitimate issues. When I was attacked on the job by an enraged boss, I went directly to an attorney. It was the only way to ensure I would be protected.
Yes..HR is there to defend the corporation...not the employees. HR departments are a joke.

The restaurant industry is rife with all manner of delinquency. From abusive management to drug and alcohol abuse to sexual harassment. If you value your soul, stay clear of the business.
Many of us have a great time in the restaurant business. The after work partying can get out of hand though and slow down your professional aspirations especially if you get addicted to drugs /alcohol.

Ya, I don't think it was an accident.....
They should call it the ugly pig as everyone there is ugly it seems. Including Mario... Ugliest group of waitresses I’ve ever seen
I once had an owner at a restaurant where I was working fire the chef on the spot because he brought a new server to a party at his house where she was sexually harassed and groped. Instead of closing the restaurant for the day and causing the workers to lose out on a day's worth of money, the owner, who hadn't cooked in years took over for the chef while the kitchen manager put out the word to all current and former employees that there were shifts available if they wanted them. From what I understand the whole week was a wash in terms of profit after which he was up to speed and after two months we finally had a replacement chef. The sacrifices that come with protecting your employees are great, the owner worked 7 days a week for two months and I wish I could say the chef never worked again but that's not necessarily how it works in the restaurant business.
Lol a wash in terms of profit 😂😂😂
I have also worked for the other kind of owner. I had one that refused to approve raises for something like 4 years, but was always in the market for a new yacht to replace the one be had at the moment. Idiot used monopolize the breakroom (a closet really) while he was there, and once left his yacht magazine when he left, after which I spent 2 hours trying to keep the serving staff from walking off the job. What a farce. Dude ended up going to jail for stealing from his partners. Who'd have thunk it?
I can relate to these women from the Spotted Pig.

*LISA LESLIE: It's not complicated for me at all. Even if there's a few times that we've been at a club at the same time, Kobe's not the kind of guy - never been, like, you know, 'Lis, go get that girl, or tell her or send her this.' I have other NBA friends that are like that. Kobe was never like that. I just never, have ever seen him being the kind of person that would do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That's just not the person that I know.*
_GAIL KING: But Lisa, you wouldn't see it, though. As his friend, you wouldn't see it._
*LISA LESLIE: And that's possible. I just don't believe that. And I'm not saying things didn't happen. I just don't believe that things didn't happen with force.*
_GAIL KING: Is it even a fair question to talk about it considering he's no longer with us and that it was resolved? Or is it really part of his history?_
*LISA LESLIE: I think that the media should be more respectful at this time. It's like if you had questions about it, you had many years to ask him that. I don't think it's something that we should keep hanging over his legacy. I mean, it went to trial.*
_GAIL KING: Yeah, well, the case was dismissed because the victim in the case refused to testify. So, it was dismissed._
*LISA LESLIE: And I think that that's how we should leave it.*

So the predator was able to get Jamie the manager that left fired from her new job? Wow....she needs to be compensated.
For it to happen she would need proof. How can she do it, unless she has a recording? And now it is anyway too late.
This brings back memories of my university years waiting tables. The restaurant life is so sex-drugs-rock'n'roll . None of these stories surprise me.
Rich boys having fun.
At expense of women as usual
Average x abusing women is not having fun. It’s not Acceptable!
@@maritzadillingham4008

@@maritzadillingham4008 I see you misunderstood me. I was saying that they were doing the same thing to do all the time but nobody cares because they're rich but poor people get locked up for consensual sex every day
Hopefully this place goes under due to the virus paybacks a b
Its not just women, it happens to men also. I have been with Wendys for 20 years, and as a gay man I have been harassed. I have been sexually harassed . I have been bullied by bosses. I have seen it all. So, yeah, it happens to men also.
That’s just hideous ..., so wrong 😩
Pigs been spotted, send them to the slaughter house.
Back in November I filed a complaint against a coworker, for bullying, sexual harassment. The next week my hours were cut by five hours, within two weeks I was down to 20 hours per week, he never lost a minute. So I left, that is the reality. Either you put up and put out or you must leave!
Bloomfield, Friedman's business partner, apologized "whole heartedly" to the public and her employees, but only after Friedman's sexual abuse was exposed, claiming she doesn't know. But before that, when employees complain to her, she would say "That’s who he is. Get used to it. Or go work for someone else".
This hypocrite should also be exposed for who she is and should be "cancelled".
He named the restaurant after himself!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I almost forgot all about this story. Where is Oprah’s documentary? When is Gayle King going to ask his friends about the allegations?
Diamonds and Fuzzy slippers Never! White men get a pass from them.
That won’t happen.
Once a perv always a perv.
HR works for the employer not the employee. This is true in every business/company. If you report wrong doing/harassment. You then become a target for dismissal. Especially females.
I see many comments attributing part of the problem to the restaurants not having an HR department, as if that would have made much difference...!!!..It is an overly optimistic to think that having an HR Department would have made much difference. I find it interesting when a person who appears so slovenly looking and attired is hailed as a great chef. In my mind cleanliness is crucial in cooking even down to one's appearance. Add the obviously narcissistic personality too. Perhaps for some there is a weird kind of appeal seeing someone who looks as if he couldn't boil water make a tasty dish? Now I see I wasn't being harsh as his behavior was as atrocious as his dress. Normally I don't like to post negatives and just keep it to myself so I can understand why the women, with more at stake, tried to cope for so long. It's a sad story that too often repeated itself to give the letters of apology much meaning other than a lame damage control spin.
Friedman has an Epsteinesque chin.
🤣
I met him. They are NOT lying. He was also rude and entitled when I met him on "THAT' talk show that shall remain un-named here... Although, it was cancelled eventually. 😔
“Never trust a skinny chef.” Apparently the opposite holds true.
Thanks for this.
With these men, the power of being in charge/business ownership goes to their heads and they think anything goes/no boundaries is the norm. It makes me sick!!!!
Friedman is a culprit in this ..he’s probably as bad as fat Mario
Lol
Just lost my appetite, these bosses should be in jail. poor the staff.
I mean, work in a corporate and sees what happens.
hmmm .... memories of Epstein and Wienstein ... whats with the "..stein" guys ???

It prolly doesn't help that they are told from birth that they are special and have been chosen by God.
@@izzybizzy3030 Thank you!
I understand how dangerous these situations are, and how those who created this environment need to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. That said, I was a server at the Spotted Pig, and I quit the first time I saw someone else being harassed. It was my third day training. It was a disgusting display. I wish peace and wellness for everyone harmed.
14.....right wow its hard to believe no one called the police
Had a meal there years ago, wasn't that great. Cult of personality.
I worked in the 5 star Resort industry in my younger years. I quickly realized how profound the level of power and control was with the Chef's, Maitre D's, and servers was. The industry is slap full of it! I couldn't stand it

I loved watching Molto Mario and Mediterranean Mario in my high school years. I thought he was a great and fun chef. Didn’t know he was a monster.
Women/girls: file charges with the police. ME TOO is okay. But as a man I've been sexually harassed on various jobs for years. When I complained to female supervisors, they did nothing.
I worked in the restaurant/service industry for a little bit, and I can honestly say that these women are right, and I never treated them like that; but they are right. There’s literally no one to complain to. If you did, the manager is going to find out who initiated action against him. Then, through some form of osmosis, the other guys guilty of the same infraction get on code and shut the he he-🏒 🏒 up. After that, your shifts decrease. Finally, all your complaints (legitimate or not) go unheard. Ultimately you quit. They win and hire someone younger.

@TheLance3185 u right tho the cookware can come in Handy
Not really he just sold out to lydia
I doubt it. He’ll still own a percentage. Under a quiet non related business name.
His EATALY locations are doing well in NYC- always full. I pass by one every day and think at times that perhaps he got away and under the radar then this pops up. I guess not🤷🏾♀️
What a TOOL he looks like on that dumb scooter thing. Gross
I always thought he was so deprecating on his cooking shows to the point he was rude to guests. He had a high opinion of himself. Always gave me the creeps and I finally quit watching. Not a huge surprise.
I remember my first restaurant job, it was common knowledge not to be alone in a room with the boss. If you found yourself in that situation, you just kinda gotta laugh it off and back away. Same goes for customers, they think because they tip, they get to make sexual remarks, or maybe give you a little pinch. You learn fast who to keep your distance from.
Evelyn Yang told her story. Evelyn is the wife of Andrew Yang who is running for president (yang2020.com). I feel for these women. They were afraid to speak up because they needed the jobs.
That’s one reason I like Yang’s UBI policy. Victims would not have to choose keeping their mouths shut to injustices out of fear of not having a paycheck. It would ensure that everyone’s basic needs could be met, level the power field and enable people to walk away from abusive situations. #HumanityFirst
jobs are not a need or necessity. food, clothing and shelter are needs. if you live in certain climates, only food is a necessity most of the time. computers and youtube are not necessities ither.
I would not dine at a restaurant called The Spotted 🐖 ! Sounds like a place where one catches corona virus.
😂
They acted like the name of their restaurant.
There's a restaurant called the Peddlin Pig where I live and it's actually great. Good service, professional, quality food, and always gets high ratings with the health department.
David Ellis haha he was a pig
Nah brah! You are thinking spotted bat as in you have to be bat chit crazy
We need to learn from the romans. Actors weren’t allowed to ceasers funeral. They were thought of bottom feeders there for entertainment nothing more. They were not idolized
Thanks and I honor and respect all these ladies for speaking out. Men call you prude or treat you like you have a problem if you complain or call out sexual mistreatment or harassment. I still need the strength to speak out in my own life: my harassers are male ‘friends’ who know I need them to help me in my business affairs and know that I’m single. They feel ‘entitled’ and ‘emboldened’ as I am dependent on them at this stage in my life. God bless you ladies and God help others like us who are still building up courage to speak up and speak out.

This happens in many restaurants in NYC. MANY restaurants in NYC offer a horrible, unsafe and scary work environment. I have children who worked as wait staff in several NYC restaurants, and many managers have an attitude of using verbal and emotional abuse and manipulation towards wait staff. Their attitude towards staff is "you are replaceable, dispensable, and I can replace you easily." There needs to be a ton more workers' rights for restaurant workers. As a parent, I am disgusted.
Its not just NYC. Its all over.
Yes u r correct .. everyone is replaceable including the restaurants owner ( cellphone recording)
It’s revolting, the behavior tolerated in the restaurant industry. These abusers are lucky they’re not doing time.
Every single male I've tried to use as a professional reference through the years ALWAYS wants something inappropriate and unprofessional. I've been asked to send pics of my smile which sounds benign, but has nothing to do with providing a prof ref. Just a week ago I had to end another professional relationship because the guy tried to start a romantic long-distance relationship when I engaged about getting a data analyst position at a tech firm and thought I could count on his reference (previously agreed upon). Too many male spotted pigs out there for sure. Pathetic.
I'm a very good judge of character. And reading between the lines. Ever since I've ever seen Mario on any show I've always had a bad feeling about him. His Aura reeks of Darkness
Totally!
Amen!!!!
Damn ...it must suck looking in the mirror every morning
Funny i feel the same...when i saw him on TV...there was something i didn't like about him, now it's come to light!!
I felt weird the first time I saw The Chew and never watched it again.
Until I saw that guy I actually liked the name Mario. I thought it would be a cute name for a Maltese dog. The dog deserves better.
Where is Oprah?!
A Immortals Legacy eating in a closet somewhere
I’ve seen a couple people make the same comment, I don’t understand the question. I haven’t watched the entire segment yet, is she mentioned?
amy raya they are implying Oprah only goes after black men who are accused of similar crimes. Like Cosby or Russel Simmons. She completely ignores anything not having to do with black men. At this point I do believe Oprah has some kind of chip on her shoulder when it comes to black men.
No, in most workplaces means harassment, bullying victimization and you'll finally just have to quit.
It's amazing how people with this much fame have to abuse their power/position of authority.
C’mon guys bring back the gentlemen, I’ll even wear a bra again. It’s ridiculous what men try to get away with it. I’ve been stalked, I had to stand in my bosses office because he loved the way I smelt. My father showed up after I told him and he walked straight into the office grabbed the bosses hand and said “ I’m Jane’s Dad” and didn’t let go of the hand shake. I never went into his office again. My father has a stare that make men pee themselves
I feel sorry for these ladies. It’s messed up to hear them get treated inappropriately.
What’s wrong with all these women? This was very serious and no one called the police? Wtf
They are not remorseful. They are apologizing for getting exposed.
Maybe you women will be believed more often if you actually report these incidents when they happen and get these dirtbags arrested instead of worrying about your acting career or getting famous
The best tv of its kind ever...thanks
A restaurant moniker always represents the owner. This one says it all...
He seems like another celebrity creep
I heard he changed the name of the Restaurant to "THE CRIPPLED HOG"
I don't understand why the general public is so disbelieving of these women .... This sort of thing has been happening for hundreds of years and it's ONLY been the last few years that anyone has even given a Damn. Women are rarely ever believed, oftentimes told as young girls should it happen to you " just try to enjoy it , it make it easier to live with afterwards"..... So many of us Never say ANYTHING. We have been preconditioned to be silent victims.
Many people in the photography business had openly discussed Mario Batali's awful behavior. We witnessed certain disturbing things while photo shoots were taking place. Mario had a king-like air about him, as many TV celebrities do. His ego was HUGE, and he believed he could get away with just about anything. The same is true for Ken Friedman, who was known as the money man. In the restaurant business, these two guys were at the top. If you wanted a seat at or near their table, you often had to play by their rules. Add to that their love of alcohol. Party every night. It was a recipe for disaster. One can only imagine the many things they did get away with. Very few people actually have the courage or the financial ability to step forward and speak out. I hope the price they pay will last forever. They did so much unspeakable damage, they deserve every second of ridicule and rejection the public can muster. They are hoping the public will forget. I hope nobody forgets.
