Happy to find a fellow question brainstormer when it comes to settings. I spotted Middle Earth even without settlements cause that coast/mountain shape is so iconic.
I have always started with geography when making worlds (is that just me?) but starting with pantheons and crationism makes so much more sense! Alsoooo pumped for the DC20 breakdown!
Funnily my own current world didn't have a physical map for aaaages. It was only after a few years that I made the full map. But making a map first makes sense to me. There's something inspiring about sitting down and just drawing out a whole world. Oh I can't wait to share
Some mountains aren't on tectonic plates because they're really really old. The Appalacian mountain range has fragments on both sides of the atlantic ocean. The Mountains are so old that they've witnessed the solar system circle the galaxy twice.
Very helpful. For my campaign i was a dumbdumb and decided "why not have it on the moon!?" and have been struggling a little in the geography departmen of what would exist, how do people live, to make the climate interesting. What wildlife would thrive and what could make interesting encounters on the road and how do the settlements come to be and what do they do to remain settlements. The basics helped engage the brain again to try and round out the setting so thanks you little ugly prince you.
Ooo that's a tough one haha and its always down to preference. For my world I made each fantastical languaged connceted to a language from our world. And so when I named something in a region I used the most spoken language in that region to name things. I then rounded off and softened things up as thats kinda what happens over time with place names. They erode almost and blend into one rounded word xD

Hey I was wondering, what’s your tips for naming the setting and stuff within the setting?
