The pantheon thing has my attention but I dont think you mean the say thing that im hoping. Im writing a biiig city to be the centerpiece of my planescape game but I dont consider the city itself to be playable space yet, one of the reasons being Im not sure what gods would be present, beyond Tyr/Torm

I LOVED this video. In my recently started homebrew campaign the players were set in a large coastal city. I felt the first session was lacking detail, not necessarily that I wasn’t prepared to improvise, but that I didn’t show off enough of the city. This video helped me to improve for the next session this upcoming Sunday. Thanks funny internet d&d man!

My personal favourite to create crazy cities: travel through europe and talk to locals. There is so much folklore that can easily be inserted into any setting.
    I.e. my hometown:
was once two cities. They combined ~600 years ago. There is still a patriotism that your part of the "newly formed" town is better than the other one.
There are tons of cool stories about that hatred Inbetween the two old cities.
There is a mountain that is said to contain a) a dragon and b) the grave of Alexander the great
There was a small bandit castle(!) ~3km away from the city walls. They regularly fired arrows over the walls....

Well do go to african-populated french cities. You might encounter an north african razzia or african warlord reconstitution. :p
But yes small villages, tourism office, or old locals is a good idea.

Gosh you're so lucky. The best I got growing up in West Virginia was exploring abandoned shacks in the woods. Although there's a really cool abandoned industrial park in Nitro I used to LOVE exploring, finding dials and valves from the 1950s. Doesn't hold a candle to bandit castles tho! 😂

There're some tables about creating a city in the 3.5 DMG that I've found helpful over the years. They go as far as letting you determine how many members of each class are in the city and what level they are. While I don't need a full character sheet or even a class for every NPC, it can be helpful to realize what high-level characters are in the city and to figure out who they are.

I am currently creating the setting for my next campaign and this video is helping immensely with the creation of the core city. My first campaign region was very haphazard and I sometimes struggled to put together a cohesive settlement. Sitting with this video on one screen and World Anvil on the other, I can actually see Bel-wadi coming alive. Thanks!

Old mountain shire/temple with a 20ft tall statue of a sitting storm/lightning god/ Zeus. " Forgotten god with no name."
PCs camp out for a night for cover, they sit around and tell tales of strength courage and their adventure deeds and those of their fore parents.
Result for the next week they are under the effects of Bull Strength gaining a +4 str bonus.
Roll wisdom/Will save stat check to see if they notice the bonus result.
If they camp there once a week for a month they gain one level of sorcerer with spells focus on lightning base effects.
If they .. Pray .. to the lightning god they gain both a level in cleric and sorcerer, with 3rdE system that grants a +2fort save and +4 Will save to resist Fear.
Along with the +4 strength bonus.
The god Zeus likes a good story and lonely for company.
Those who become full priest, gain Call Lightning once per week, along with +6str & +4con and +4dex.
A bit heavy hand but has an epic feel.
Needless to say, many of the local herders can throw down some serious lightning if needed and all they do is tell silly stories to pass the night's rain and share some food/ wine with the statue alter. Not fully realizing their location and the power the site holds.
Any child conceived within the temple cave and the mother stays within the temple and goes no farther than a mile from the temple and sleeps there every night for nine months till the child is born. Gains the half - celestial template along with the cleric bonus if they follow the lightning path.
So the PCs can find the site, then do a legacy campaign where they role play their own children who are demi gods.
b.) Night hags, and other lower plane fiends will do next to anything to steal that child for their own dark deeds.
If the players want to role play fiends trying to steal the baby, surprise them with the baby casting Call Lightning on them.

There are some really cool supplements on itchio I’ve used to help with location building. There’s some good bits in “The Ground Itself,” though some of the prompts are little weird. “Ex Novo” is alright, though the factions mechanic and line drawing feel underutilized. “World Maker” is pretty good. “TerraCards” has a good loop for generating new areas and factions. And there’s also “Microscope,” but I find that best for whole setting generations than single locations.

I'd love to see a larger city with a court wizard who can cast zone of truth. They could have specified times each day for "trials" when people accused of the most serious crimes are gathered so they can say that they are guilty or innocent in the zone of truth.
Then add a sociopath who figures out a way to get around the zone of truth and abuse the system.

I'd like to highlight what you said about "Keeping the Peace". Whatever defends the city says so about the place. If they have fine arms and armor, then the city is likely prosperous to afford this kind of thing. Or maybe the city thinks they NEED their guards to be that well armed. Conversely, if they're basically pitchfork farmers in a helmet, that also says something about the preceived need or prosperity, or maybe the skill of the guards. Are there a lot of barbarians in this town? Maybe its centered around a monk's monastary, and so few people need to wear armor.

We tend to think of medieval cities as being dominated by the feudal lords, etc. But medieval cities were the places that often (not always, and certainly with many exceptions) had institutions that almost started resembling meritocratic pseudo-democratic structures, most significantly the guilds. Guilds were social structures that licensed and regulated tradesmen and craftsmen. A person could--in theory at least--rise from lowly roots and become a somewhat important person, on the guild council, or a burgher (town councilman). All that said, most of the time such tiny "laboratories of democracy" were old boys networks that protected the privilege of those at the top rungs of society. So many medieval cities were in fact oligarchies that still nonetheless owed feudal obligations to a feudal lord or three, because of course they did. 😆

Can’t get anything to load when I click the free content. It just gets stuck trying to load. Looks like some web clean up or maintenance is in order to ensure its working for you. I’m impressed with the work you have done but not interested in investing when I can’t find what I joined for and the website is also no use. I’m gonna end my Patreon. Something I find I mess up as a GM is being overly generous with loot (magic items and gold specifically) and it ends up biting me in the ass as the PCs end up being OP later. Any suggestions on challenging them or course correcting when you’ve perhaps over indulged your players?
I did bring taxes on their PILES of gold into the equation and that was fun

    • @krispalermo8133
      @krispalermo8133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Limit the rarity of gold and everything is paid for with silver coins or plates, maybe guide/bank contract papers.
Wizards create magic items out of mundane peasant house hold items by spending Xp instead of Gp value cion in materials.
b.) Then every 10d10 years magic waxes or wades in power making items non magical and spellcasting requires rounds/minutes to cast in melee combat instead of seconds.
c.) A 3rd-level spellcaster casting a 2nd-level spell has to burn off 30xp to get the spell off. Unless they have the right spell opponent.
To active a magic effect from a given item requires Xp burn.
d.) 3rdE magic and CR system with DMG optional rules for Creating Permanent Magic Trap Items.
Granny walks out side an once per day she cast True Strike to gain a +20 insight bonus to her next attack roll action, kills a chicken/raven or rabbit/rat with a sling stone. By the end of the month she can create one permanent magic item of 2nd-level spell effect.
Granny's clay cooking pot, she cooks rabbit stew which feeds eight people with the effects of cure light wounds and cure disease. It also has +1 magic armor to keep from getting broken even in a magic wade time period. The goblins have stolen Granny's cooking pot.
2.) Low magic effect setting, ..
a.) Create Food and Water, after casting the PC find a pack mule with water skins, the PCs can eat the mule.
After the spell is casted, it rains and the PCs can drink muddy rainwater from the ground and eat earth worms.
b.) Good Berries, the PCs just finds a few days' worth of berries and nuts.
c.) Cure light wounds, the PC gains temporary Hp, or extra Hp during long overnight bed rest.
Cure critical wounds is still needed to pull a PC back from below zero Hp.
High magic, PC rapid heals like Marvel comics Xmen Wolverine, even from cure light wounds.
3.) AD&D2ndE " Council of Wryms," dragons had to Eat a given amount of magic items to grow healthy and large into the next age category. Also reptile scales are made from the same material of hair, finger nails/claws, and feathers. So when dragons go to binge eat before dragon sleep age growth. They eat everything, from Elven cloaks of magic stealth, winter wool peasant blankets, magic scrolls, wands, and staves.
a.) A dragon of a given age requires a +1 to +4 weapon to hit. A +2 dragon will eat through a +1/+2 war hammer like it is a piece of hard tack, dry fruit, or chicken. On the other hand a +3 wizard stave or spear/ war hammer will be the dragons favorite chew toy for centuries. A +4 large metal steel knight shield is giving raw hide to a dog.
      b.) Counterfeit, ..
Elemental Earth/ mineral, also known as " Wall of Stone " commonly sandstone, maybe granite base on the DM. Mineral can also be salt, coal, or any gemstone crystal.
Elemental Metal, also known as " Wall of Iron," which could be copper, silver, gold.
Iron could be broke down to create common household items or turn into weapons & armor to be sold to orcs. And when the orcs attack the wizards Dispel Magic of the iron leaving the orcs defenseless.
Problem with Wall of Silver/Gold being turn into coins for taxes or market/merchant trade. First off the coins are easily detected as magic and can be Dispelled. But some fraud can still happen. Tax collectors will always have wizards traveling with them.
Dragon hoards, dragons eat everything, and if its magic then it is a chew toy. What at first thought of as gold cions or shavings on the lair floor is a Wall of Gold that the dragon uses as a scratch pad and snack food. The dragon just feeds off the elemental energy of the cave lair and the Walls of Metal surrounding it.
Gold dust to baby dragon is like giving sugar to human children.
4.) Any house with a lot of magical energies such as a potion or scroll shop will sooner or later get raided by a dragon.
a.) Players are really complaining on how the DM screw them over by having a dragon eat all their equipment when they were out at the tavern.
b.) How do you raise your .. dragon. baby dragons show up and now they players have to raises them, and feed them. Have players draw cards to see which dragon they role play. So it is the players eating each other out of house and home and not the DM.
c.) Any PC wizard that can cast Polymorph and has decent ranking in social skills of Diplomacy/Bluff or Intimidation will have dragons show up to court them as statues symbols to create a half dragon. Or be attack by other dragon out of rejection.
d.) Any neutral evil PC will start to get courted by lower plane fiends of Baator/devils, night Hags, and demons.
Any player running chaotic stupid PC saying they are neutral good but are acting like murder hobos will have fiends show up to .. encourage .. their behavior. And since fiends are showing up to the PCs, then N/PC paladins will start hunting the PCs.
      5.) Rust monster ...
      Slimes and ozzes ..
b.) A female Drow plane hopping wizard driving a flying pink Cadillac convertible, crazy fast women are a good way to waste/ I mean to spend your money/gold.
      Hope this helps.

For me, start with a dominant dilemma for the town (tip 9) and how individuals respond to it. Say, the rulers need more army, so raise taxes. The citizens have to choose, join the army, protest war or avoid taxes. Other influencing dilemma's can be, a new religion being spread, growing food shortages, fear of evil, racism, a nation wrecking two party system, scam artists chosen as leader and some believing him, industries that slowly poison or enslave the population. Chihuahuas are so ill tempered because they were created expressly to take out the Greek hero Achilles, but some dude named after the capital of France got to him first.
Those poor dogs have been carrying that shame ever since, and it makes them grumpy.

    ** ABOUT CHIUAUAS
once upon a time in the 00's i saw a doc in Animal Planet about dog species that were created by man (crossbreeding, selection, etc) and the tiny ones that you seem to aprecciate were made by the Mayan ppl to be a cute puppy that could be held by 01 hand, to their emperor

As an old AD&Der with players the same, we actually understand and appreciate ancient history. So governments like those in feudalism we have not questioned. I was a sometime member of a group that played in a Norman “Gor” based world. If anyone knows how that book series was like? Yeah, harsh. Low fantasy and tough with social matters that in today’s society we abhor. And is not dealing with these social issues in a fantasy world not a drive for players have their characters strive to better?

Heard of a game book where the dwarves had a minotaur problem, and the B-plot was the dwarf princess was arranged to marry someone she didn't want to.
So the players' PCs ran off with the dwarf princess and left the DM holding a $30 adventure book on " Mines of the Minotaur. "
Moral of the story is, you can never plan on what the players will do.
b.) My old gaming shops groups, were large enough where we just ran player group vs player group and the DM referee the action, ..
So my rogue/bard did my charisma social check and bribe the drow to get into drow politics for more drama.
c.) In another game of PCing a rogue/bard/psionic wild talent bending the rules, the character max out his Bluff skills and was a compulsive lair.
The group of mind flayers were in Awe of my Bluff results and utter disbelief that I just repeated tried to hustle them, I could find something and anything they didn't think of needing or wanting. I had some good saving throw rolls.
So the mind flayers preform a bunch of Psychic Surgery upping the psionic abilities and sent me at one of their many problems to annoy.
