  • We use these trucks in a hot shot trucking company. They get used exclusively for pulling gooseneck trailers 36-40ft. Avg gross weight hauled by these pickups is 25k lbs.

    Had the same experience with a marine diesel. It burned oil. Talked to the manufacturer who said I had glazed cylinders because it had been babied during the break in period. He recommended “Italian tuning” Took the boat out and did run it for 3 hours on 90% load. That fixed the problem.

    Per Cummins service manual, need to high idle if gonna idle more than 10 minutes straight ..... The most important reason for this is to prevent the lifters from developing a groove in them from a lack of spinning... Flat tappet lifters spin in it's bore at speeds above idle.

    My truck, will high idle by itself till it gets to 179F if the temps drop down to 169F it will kick in again. 1000RPM

    A buddy had a 6.2 82 Chevy diesel. It was extremely cold so left truck running. 2 days later finally got back to the truck still running lol sure that wasn't good for it!

    Paul I have a 17 Ram Cummins 2500 6spd manual I only get a high idle at 40°F ambient air temp or lower unless I force it at 50°F with the exhaust brake on with parking brake applied and it will stay active at 1000Rpm till coolant temp reaches 170°F on a cold start engine. So I always start it with the exhaust brake on full on a cold engine. It takes a minute or two but it will jump to high idle under those conditions only. Totally different than the Automatic transmission trucks where it can be forced with cruse control under any condition.

      Yes use high idle. Better air flow better AC too.

    I rarely let my car engine idle for more than a minute before putting the gearbox in Drive and slowly driving off. If the outside temperature is below 55-60 degrees, I may wait until I've driven the car for a few miles before turning on the heater.

    I drive a 2023 freightliner Cascadia the main reason I keep it running all night is for the air conditioning or the heater Other than that I shut the engine off to preserve fuel . When I 1st got the truck the truck would want to shut off just as a fuel saving precaution but I overrode that but When you run it all night the truck will have a beeping warning sound that means That it needs to go into regens if I don't do regen Then the engine will shut off . But now somehow it goes into regen by itself . I have heard that if it idols all night the idol should be a little higher than usual so that the oil will reach the heads and lubricate everything properly

    If you’re going to idle for any amount of time high idle it raises oil pressure and moves air if you have a manual fan

    I've heard it's bad for the bearings, I turn my to high idle when sitting for extended time. Mostly on warm up on cold days

    What temperature do you allow your truck to cool to before shutting it down after towing?

    • @kasken719
      @kasken719 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as your trans temp isn't in the red, I was told 2-5 mins idling will be enough to cool the engine, more importantly, the turbo.
      If you do have to stop because the trans is too hot, do not shut it down. Use a high idle to lower those temps before shutting down.
