    I run my exhaust brake at all times in my 2018 Ram tradesman 6.7L. My mechanic told me that running it is good for the turbo.

    • @scarletboa
      @scarletboa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is true.
      The newer turbos (vgt) have variable vanes that move to alter the effective internal size of the turbo. Using the exhaust brake exercises the vanes and keeps them moving freely. Carbon buildup will eventually make them stick if you baby the engine too long. 6.0 powerstrokes were notorious for it.

    I run mine and auto around town when I'm not Towing and it works great. When I'm towing our 18,000 lb RV I have it in full engine brake and what a help it is. It takes care of 90% of my braking going down through the mountains. I slow way down in the mountains and will only lightly touch the brakes on an as-need basis. I never keep the brakes applied but just momentarily to adjust my speed. I have a 20/20 Ram, great truck

    Hey Paul I’m a diesel mechanic by trade and I was told the same from a few customers that were concerned about it. I think the rumor came around from people cold starting their trucks and using the exhaust brake to warm their trucks up faster causing more back pressure therefore causing premature blow by. I have no evidence of that but I have seen a few maintained 6.7’s come through the shop with blow by under 200k miles. May be true may not, Just my 2 cents

    Essentially engine is an air pump. Restrict the discharge side of the air pump is the same thing as our exhaust brake. It will not create heat as there is no fuel being injected during the process. Fuel is what creates heat. Not using the exhaust brake is hurting you more than helping 100%. When the soot build up get bad enough the veins will stick. Paul is right on the money. If you have an turbo actuated exhaust brake use it every time that engine is running. Period. Thanks for the vid Paul. BTW I like my 21 HO/Aisin mega. Wouldn't change a thing.

    The VGT system is nice as a brake supplement. But on the power side, the VGT reduces boost at low load. The emissions tune assumes various factors when not loaded. And cruising at a moderate speed like 50mph on flat terrain. Can fool the PCM. Our 2018 Ram 2500 got a code for the NOX sensor failure. I run 5w40 Rotella synthetic year round. Which at moderate speeds and light loads. Helps the engine run with less throttle, and no boost.
    When the dealer tech troubleshooted the engine. Everything was fine. The exhaust and emissions system was clean. With the PCM hooked up to the factory. The computer determined a refresh of the PCM was needed.
    Now the engine runs 2psi of boost at 50mph on flat terrain. When before the boost was zero. Also the timing seems slightly retarded in all conditions. Engine runs smoother and quieter. The instant mpg readout seems 2mpg better.
    The beauty of the VGT system and the electronic controls. Even the factory will provide custom tuning for improvements in performance!

    I know very little about diesels and such so this is a genuine question. Does the exhaust brake affect fuel efficiency because it's slowing you down faster than normal? I am talking about flat roads and unloaded when one might not want to have it on if it did.

    • @peterdang9475
      @peterdang9475 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The exhaust brake should not really affect fuel efficiency . Watch at 6:40 Paul explains when the exhaust brake is in auto mode the exhaust brake will engage when needed to keep you at a certain speed when coasting and not let you accelerate past that speed while going down a hill. If you want to slow down more you can tap your brake pedal and the exhaust brake will engage and work to slow you. If you continuous hold down the brake pedal the exhaust brake and service brakes (disk brakes) will both be working to slow you down.

    • @AkioWasRight

      Keeping a light foot on the accelerator keeps the exhaust brake off, so it is effectively like coasting without an exhaust brake, or coasting without any drag.
