- There’s a muscle-car war brewing in Detroit these days. Right as the handling-champion Z/28 goes out of production, Ford delivers a Shelby-badged suckerpunch with a flat-plane-crank V8, MR dampers, and carbon fiber wheels. Head 2 Head host Jason Cammisa takes the two through a series of challenges: first, some canyon carving to see which car is better on the road. Then, a dyno shootout: can the GT350R’s 5.2-liter Voodoo make more power than the venerable 7.0-liter LS7? And then, it’s onto Chuckwalla Valley Raceway where Jason and racecar driver Randy Pobst find out not only which one is faster around the track, but which car handles best. No muscle-car comparison test would be complete without a drag race, of course, so Cammisa lines up the cars with the help of his cousin Bob from West Virginia. The new 2016 Camaro ss with the alpha platform is gonna be faster/outperform the 2016 gt350 (the 2016 gt350"R" might be slightly faster around the track), I just cant imagine how bad the 6th gen zl1 and z28 models will murder every single mustang....

The 2016 SS will not outperform a GT350 around a track, in case you didn't know the gt350 is only one second behind the Z/28 around chuckwalla raceway and its got like 85HP more than the SS lol

The 6th gen 2016 Camaro ss with the alpha platform is putting up the same numbers as the 2015 z28 (zeta platform). These alpha platforms very well looks like they are going to murder everything ford can dish out for the mustang.

The only car that sounds similar to a GT350 is an M5 v10 with a modified exhaust. Flashman is right though, the GT350 sounds like pissed of Ferrari. That's not to say that the GT350 R sounds like a Ferrari because it doesn't. However if a Ferrari was pissed, it would probably sound more like a the Shelby.

It annoys me that people always argue Ford is better than GM or GM is better than Ford like what always happens and always will is Ford makes a really good car that’s better than GM then a couple years later GM makes a really good car better than Ford like it’s always back and forth it just depends on the year both makers and cars are amazing.

Fiat bought and ruined what was a contender. Both Ford and GM have built some fantastic cars. And Ford was lucky enough to have Carroll Shelby on their team in the really important years. Hence the Cobra, Daytona and GT40. But Chevy really never got into that international racing like Ford did. But based on the Ford/Shelby marriage AMERICA won. Proved beyond ANY doubt that America could compete with and BEAT everybody. Americans have a different list of needs for our cars than the Europeans. And they are legitimate fodder for the "bigger/heavier/gas guzzler" reputation we endured for so long. Drive across Italy. Drive across America. There's the difference.

dealers have lowered the price of new z28s by 25k in an effort to eradicate all new 5th gens from lots to make room for the 6th gens. They are no longer in production.

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 is really a wonderful car. Only 515 and 1201 in two year run. I haven’t seen any in person. I saw it at a car show back in 2014. All the racing technology and how it looks in person is amazing. This will be a super collectible car.

At the end of the day it's just a damn good time if you like American V8s man... the way I see it you can go get a brand new Camaro with all the options and have a very strong runner OR pick up a base 5.0, mid the hell out of it & have a killa on your hands. Dodge is doing good too, most will say the Challenger is too big/heavy but we have options 🏁

i drove the C7 Z51 and i really like its low weight and magnetic ride control at Autobahn above 200km/h ! sitting deep inside and looking over the nice formed hood was great...interior superb.

There's a reason the only car that beat this out for best drivers car was the Mclaren 570S, which costs more than $100,000 more than it. Bravo Ford...
It was a reason GT350R lost to 570S. The main eason was sadly poor control and steering in and out of drifts. Which is very interesting point of view.
Z28 actually drifts far easier then GT350R for various reasons.
You're not supposed to drift track oriented cars, unless you wan to be the slowest guy on the track.
The drifting is by the MT crew. They are testing the feel and limits of each car on track. Nothing to do about lap times. 1LE can be seen drifting around various cars at the end of 1 of the drag racing videos. Was that about lap times??,clearly not.
It appears Ford chose not to tune such slip in the steering and electronics of GT350R.
Jeff Will Wasn't drifting just loosing the backend and the few shots seen drifting is for fun, not on the official laps.
Brawndo That's all I'm trying to say here. Again GT350R didn't do well in this area on track with editors. There's are reason the 1LE was chosen to drift in the drag race video.
Flatplane V8 and magnetic ride: Ferrari level technology (Well, not that high, but almost), Carbon Wheels: exceptionally light, and cheaper than a Camaro? I might choose this over a GT-R and that is high praise from a guy that loves a GT-R. I mean I cannot ignore the fact that it has stunning styling and that glorious screaming V8 sound is just exceptional.
And also the Camaro is a very fast car as we know, but this one is faster on the track and on the drag strip.

I just watched motorweek compare the 1982 mustang and Camaro. Interesting to hear the announcer talk about how awesome they were - both cars were in the 15.5 sec range. Crazy what these new versions are and what they can do now. Love the 50ish year old rivalry!

I too just watched the 82 shoot out of Both cars. Who would have thought in '82. Where we would be now as far as HP and handling. Straight line performance takes a slight back seat to handling. Something that was never even considered in the 1960'S.

I own a Z/28 and am wondering how many here have ever seen one in person, let alone driven one because I've had mine 2+ years and still have people tell me it's the first one they've seen in person (and I live an major metro area...). Both are great and 99% of you would take either if keys were handed to you. I'd gladly have an R (but not for $90k+) and only if I could keep my Z. Also, I can assure you that videos don't do its exhaust note any justice. Funny story... guy w/ an R heard my car driving through a parking lot and walks over to tell me that he wished his car sounded that good. I've heard 350s rumbling down the road and thought "damn, that sounds mean as hell" From a performance standpoint, they're close enough that unless you're a pro racer, you'll never get anywhere near the upper limit of performance so it doesn't really matter. That said...the Mustang is built on a next generation platform. Z/28 was built on a 4 year old platform. You can't deny that it's pretty impressive in its ability to match up well against the 350R. In fact, in some cases, it has beaten the R's track times. Also, watch the 'Every Day Driver GT350 (non R) vs. Boss 302' vid. Same guy owns both cars. He prefers the Boss 302. I had a Boss LS. Fantastic car, but Z is so much better that it's not even close. Btw, it should be given that it's MSRP was 50% more than the Boss'.

The other two involved were Tesla and Nissan. Ford, at the time of the bankruptcy hearings, didnt even own the blue oval anymore, as theyd borrowed against that. Many Ford lovers always claim this "we didn't take money" bs, which is entirely false. In the end, total money borrowed on part of Ford exceeded 15 billion, while GM/GMAC only took just over 13.

The answer to why the GT350 is so planted out of corners can be found at 9:28 Just look at that torque spike with the Z28. Although more fun, the gradual curve the Ford has is better on a racetrack.
+JPCreativePro The street driving of both was very different also. The online review has the Z28 smoother and progressive in oversteer off tight turns. Making it much easier to control. GT350 was the totally opposite. Snappy at the limit making it very nervous.
Torque spike is such because of aggressive rear end gear in Z28.ZL1 had the same issues. C6 Z06 had similar engine with taller gearing and mid rear making it more smoother like GT350.

Mr Swipe I did consider it. I’m not a fan of the super charger. And to be honest the GT350 engine makes me smile everyday. Heck I might have live with the Z/28 if it sounded as good.

I owned a 1993 mustang Cobra, 2012 Boss Laguna Seca, and a 2013 Shelby GT 500. I saw the GT350 R and I really like it. I drove the 2014 Camaro Z/28 and I felt win love. It’s a driver car and old school features. The 427 is going to be a classic since they will not going to manufacture more big engines. The camaro has Formula 1 suspension and carbon fiber breaks. Is a great pice of American history and muscle.

The gt350r was designed to beat it, because it is older and hasn't changed since like 2010. So wait until the new gen is out.

This wasn't an unnecessary video. MT is showing a review video based on two cars in the same class, that are being talked about right now. They have to "prove" to its reviewers, that the GT350 isn't just numbers and cool factor, but that it indeed is better than the Z28. I'm sure when the new Z28 comes out, they will do another comparison, but I have a feeling that all the Z28 is gonna do is just increase it hp and torque numbers, to beat the GT350, because that's the only way that it will beat it. So far, I would take the GT350 over a new Z28. Why? Because the GT350 is ground breaking tech right now, and the new Z28 will just be a copy of it, but in different shape, and more plastic.
Just really seems awesome to be behind the wheel of the 350R.

I have read in multiple places that they are making 137 of the new Shelby; 100 of the GT350 (50 with and 50 without the track pack) and 37 of the GT350R. If that's the case I don't even know why people discuss these cars like it's going to be possible to own. I checked autotrader and it says there are 166 for sale, so I really don't know what to believe. All of them are anywhere from 20-40k over MSRP. Glad to see dealerships are price gouging the fuck out of them. Again, good luck owning one.

gentlemonsterkennels Why are the 2011-2012 worth so much less? They seem to be going for around $40k, and the 2013-14 is around $50k. Was it 13 that they put they put the larger supercharger on it? The 11+ has the aluminum block, right?
