- As part of Motor Trend’s annual Best Driver’s Car competition powered by Mothers, we line up the contenders on an airstrip and bask in the glory of horsepower, wheelspin, and launch control. This year, Senior Features Editors Jason Cammisa and Jonny Lieberman give you a quick tour of the 12 competitors before strapping into their insurance-mandated helmets and firesuits and introducing pedal to metal. This year, the contestants are the Acura NSX, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S manual, Audi R8 V10 Plus, BMW M4 GTS, Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE, Dodge Viper ACR, Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R, Jaguar F-Type SVR, McLaren 570S, Mercedes-AMG GT S, Nissan GT-R, and Porsche 911 Carrera S-except for one small addition after Jason realizes Jonny’s Dodge Charger Hellcat is parked nearby.

The legend says that the R8 yelled:"FUCK YOUR TURBOS!" when it crossed the line in first place.
Actually they said...."Thank God it was only 1/4 mile race"... as the 570S was coming on like a freight train and would have passed the R8 plus within the next 100ft. I would have picked the R8 plus as the best driver's car for this year..but for some reason motor trend picked the McLaren. The R8's look is just getting really old and needs a new one.
Don troll955xo, On a drag strip it's limited to 1/4mile or under. Motor trend has previously tested "powerful cars" in standing miles or to higher speeds 0-150mph.
In the real world most racing is done on highways usually from a roll. As seen by most amateur youtube race videos being on the highways.
Standing start Is more about chassis setup/traction than power...and in a stock street car it's easier to break stuff from a standing start. With high powered cars it's also difficult to get traction so it's actually safer from a roll...less change of getting caught by COPs too.

R8 Plus would beat the hellcat in a standing mile. The 570s would be in 1st, R8 plus in 2nd and the Hellcat would get third.
In a standing mile they would reach about 175mph.
0-170mph times:
Audi R8 V10 Plus - 21.1 sec
Hellcat Charger - 23.1 sec
570s is 0.8sec ahead of the R8 plus by 160mph So it obviously would get to 175+/-mph quicker.

the R8 is a true understatement. it's the quiet kid who always sits in the corner not playing with the others because he knows he can kick everyone's ass and doesn't need to prove it.

Why? The BMW had the least horsepower and was a track car with aer that creates drag on straights. It did pretty good against 700+HP.

No. Technically they both are Audi and Lamborghini at the same time. Audi helps engineering engines and makes them more reliable.
yeah literally the same engine from the Audi as the lambo, but the huracan just sounds a bit better I guess and of course in my opinion looks better. I prefer the previous gen r8 as far as styling goes

@@UniUnknown was more referencing the potential of electric motors vs gasoline engines. Even the Tesla model 3 does 0-60 in like 5.3 seconds for around $35,000. Spend $10k more and you can get the AWD version and do it in 4.5 seconds. That's like Charger R/T Scat Pack territory.

Only due to traction....Viper is a low 10 second car if it hooked Hellcats 10,.50=10.80's with drag radials bone stock..I ran 10.91-10.98 in my 2006 Viper Coupe and that's the 525 hp 8.3 V-10 not the 8.4 V-10...I also run 12.03 in my Scat Pack Challenger 6.4 with street radials..

the GTR is nutty as hell bro, its just not as good as the new gen R8 or huracan or 570s or 488 gtb.
spend the money to a gtr plus mods with the price of the r8 and the r8 is somewhere far in the back. Why would the r8 lose from the gtr it cost so much just to lose from a half price gtr? while the gtr is a performance bargain it is not the fastest.

It's fast..but there are a few models not in this race that are faster...most are alot more expensive though. The 570s is the "entry level" McLaren and if it had 5 more feet would have passed the R8+, you can tell by the greater trap speed. Also the R8 Plus had Michelin sport cup tires, while the 570S only had Pzero Corsa tires...big difference in traction.
SRT mounted a set of michelins in place of the corsa's on the Viper T/A at Laguna Seca and the T/A with the Cup tires was 2.5 seconds faster.

You forgot to mention that the Audi R8 has All-Wheel-Drive due to Quattro Technology.
Car and driver tested one that had pirelli PZero and the 570S was faster. They also ran a 911 turbo S, which beat them both and was the cheapest of the bunch.

The regular GTR wouldn't stand a chance against the NSX on track, you'd have to get the Nismo which costs only a little less.
Well the Gtr wasn't made for track. It was made mostly for drag.
JORMAN MIRALDA the GTR was made for balance not to drag race. Which explains why the nismo has the 5th fastest time on the Nurburgring. And abnormal GTR is faster than the NSX around the track as well.
