Intermittent Fasting For Women Over 50 | Weight Loss & Longevity

  • Intermittent fasting can be beneficial for women 50 and 0ver, especially for weight loss and longevity. It's way more simple that a lot of people make out. And everyone can do it. Intermittent Fasting can also help with glucose intolerance and is vital for brain health as we get older. This kind of overnight fast is a simple and healthy way to put your body into ketosis (I know that trendy "Keto" term), while you sleep. This simply means that you are allowing your body to burn fat, rather than glucose, for a short period of time.

    I'll be starting week 13 of my weight loss journey and I'm down 31 pounds. My goal was to lose 35 but I'm going for 40 now. I'm doing Omad (one meal a day) and have fasted several times already for 48 hours. Feel so much better with that extra weight off me. I'm female, 58, 5'10, and as of now 154 pounds.

    Brilliant! I especially loved hearing (~ 12:00 mark) that our health biomarkers (LDL, BP, oxidative stress, and insulin sensitivity) all improve with a 3 hr fast before bed, and that will help with reflux too - yay! And noting that you do this most of the time while not being rigid about it (ie: special occasion, restaurant, vacation) makes it a lifestyle commitment that is doable. Add better sleep and the brain detoxing benefit...wonderful! I look forward to the brain detoxing video very much. Can you please address what your research shows about supplementing with algae-based DHA & EPA for brain health? There has been so much controversy over this topic among plant based doctors this year with some saying we can get enough from a no-added-plant fats WFPB vegan diet (no nuts, seeds, or flax/chia), and others saying eating that those foods will provide enough ALA that our bodies can convert, and still others saying that some long term WFPB vegans don't convert enough of the ALA to EPA & DHA, potentially leading to brain shrinkage and dementia later in life. Being in my mid-50s as well, I am quite interested in doing what I can to have optimal brain health in the decades to come. Thank you for this informative video, Sophie! :)

    I’m am 54 and on day 9. I have been eating one meal a day at 5:30 or 6 o’clock. It’s always a keto casserole or keto involved because I make this for my husband and son. I’ve had no sweets I don’t do chips potatoes rice any of that stuff. I’ve been drinking water or green tea. And on day nine I’ve only dropped 2 pounds. Could this have anything to do with menopause. And why nothing is budging and all these other people the pounds just seem to fall off.

      I think you'll be okay with a little tea with a tiny bit of plant-based milk. I would try to have your coffee later with food because it can tend to be a little too acidic on an empty stomach. But it's okay for some. It depends on your digestive system.

    Thank you for the moderate IF suggestions. I feel too weak when I do 16/8 or longer and I feel like a bit of a failure when I don't make it that long if that is my goal. Many IF advocates extoll the benefits of fasting if and only if it is longer than 16 hours. 12-14 hours is always doable for me. I eat dinner around 6pm and eat nothing until I get up and work out and shower and have breakfast at 9am. So from the time I finish eating at 6:30 or 7pm, I will have at least 14 hours fasted. I feel great doing this, but I don't lose any weight.

    Hi, I’ve been watching your utube videos and really learn a lot from them.. I have been trying for a few years to quit night time eating. It has been a habit since childhood and I am now 53 and menopausal. I have been fortunate in that I have always been at a healthy weight and have always exercised. However, I am now gaining weight and know that it has more to do with my nightly eating, I even eat in the middle of the night when I wake up. I eat a healthy diet during the day and most of my night snacks are healthy but usually carbs. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Meg

    • @SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen
      @SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meg - you just need to ask yourself why you are eating at night. Is is boredom, real hunger, stress? And if you're eating in the middle of the night, are you not getting a good night's sleep. There's no simple answer to this. I would start by implementing a discipline for yourself, and making yourself accountable to others (your spouse maybe) to help you to stay on track. Make a decision today to make this lifestyle change. It will become a habit. And one that will make a big difference.

      Matcha tea with frothy milk is always nice. But If you are avoiding caffeine then I’m not sure if it’s healthy or not and it’s not tea, but Cafix for me is my coffee replacer. But if you don’t make it well it can be a little bitter. So I like adding a bit of water less then half a cup and then adding frothy oatly (with my nepresso milk frother). With a little maple syrup for sweetener. Or cashew milk instead of oatly from elmhurst 🤤.
      Sometimes I’ll add a few sprinkles of sweet turmeric blend from frontier (you could make your own too of course) to it.
      You could also do frothy plant milk with added turmeric and a bit of maple syrup and cinnamon. But for the coffee replacement I always found cafix to help especially when I was quitting coffee. But there is no caffeine so the headaches may come.
      I don’t drink coffee at all now (unless rarely for the holidays). I use to drink it 3x a day for years (expresso). Then I was told by my doctor that I had to give up caffeine, I was still young too ☹️. But I have to say it’s been years and i feel great and it’s nice not having to depend on caffeine to wake up, it’s all me. Best✌🏼

    Is there any science to substantiate your point about ice water slowing metabolism? Can you share it with me? Please and thank you!!

    • @SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen
      @SophieUlianoGorgeouslyGreen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beth - this is such a great question. I will dig for the science to support this. It's such a rich topic, because iced water (or cold water) affects all the blood vessels and circulation in our digestive system, as well as the vagus nerve. I am planning a whole video on this because I think it's super important. But ultimately, everyone needs to try it for themselves. If anyone has any kind of digestive issues, I recommend replacing iced or cold water with warm or room-temp water. Drink BEFORE your meal instead of during. And see if you notice a difference.

    • @pammccoy4331
      @pammccoy4331 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually ice water speeds up your metabolism as your body needs to work harder to warm it up for digestion. Same as exercising in the cold, you burn more calories.

    • @Nativity-DiscipleshipFormation
      @Nativity-DiscipleshipFormation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read somewhere that drinking ice water all day would burn calories and so of course I switched immediately to ice water! Who Doesn’t want to burn calories without trying LOL I drank ice water all day for YEARS. At the time my IBS was out of control. I tried eliminating almost every food to figure out what was making it so bad. Nothing helped. My yoga instructor told me to stop drinking ice water. I thought this sounded ridiculous to be honest... but it literally was a huge answer to my gut problems. So I believe this advice is spot on. No scientific evidence needed for me. I have physical evidence!

      Christine - thanks so much for this comment. This is EXACTLY what I aim to do...walk the middle path and stay away from all the silly extremes abounding on the Internet - glad you appreciate!

    Grains are so inflammatory though. And what is wrong with eggs, chicken and meat?

      I wouldn't recommend coffee to be the first thing to hit your tummy. Go with lemon water or a tea, which is less acidic. And have your coffee with your breakfast.

    Hello Sophie! I'm a subscriber and I never write comments, but I want to thank you so much for explaining it in such a simple way and giving us so much important information at the same time. I'm diabetic and have fibromyalgia and used to suffer of acid reflux and other digestive issues due to gallbladder, intestinal and liver surgery and then due to 2 car accidents I've had knee, back and shoulder surgeries, was also diagnosed with chronic migraines. Developed an esophageal ulcer from all the meds. One day I got tired of it all and decided to see a holistic doctor, which I found out through her tests that I was depleted of minerals and had parasites. By following her advice and taking the minerals and doing the colonics I was a new person! Headaches were gone, lost weight, had energy, no inflammation pain with the exception of my back pain (had disc replaced and fusion). The only medication I take is insulin. Everyone was interested in what I was doing....so i would tell them...I had I decided to begin doing smoothies and changing my way of eating and everything organic. The only meat I eat is organic chicken and not all the time. I also got into essential oils and even my son likes using on his face the combination of oils I have in a bottle in the fridge, no more pimples :) Wow what a difference, I had lost about 35-40 pounds and how I felt so much better, but then I got married on a cruise and even then we did good my husband and I did not gain weight, but when we got back home I began to stray away from the smoothies and I gained some weight back because I began eating breads, sometimes healthy ones and some not so healthy (bagels) I still buy everything else organic but need to incorporate healthy snacks for when we go outdoors fishing etc. Also I'm 51 going through menopause. This video and the one about How to Beat Menopause Belly Fat are so interesting. I will begin the fasting and smoothies ASAP ; ) I took notes and will post them on my fridge.

      HI Beatriz - thanks for sharing your health journey. And I am so happy to hear that you have empowered yourself and taken control of your "health care" despite all your difficulties. I really applaud you for that. And I hope that I can help you along the way as you continue to heal, and enjoy life with your new hubby:-)
