Low carb, light workouts, no breakfast-no food after 7 pm (intermittent fasting) and both me and my type 1 diabetic husband have lost 60+ pounds!!! Off several meds! He takes 2/3 less insulin (poor pharma!) and we feel SO much better! 3 years in for me and never going back!
I’m A 58 year old female that went through menopause four years ago and subsequently gained approximately 10 pounds. I am athletic and have always been active and nothing I did brought me back to the weight I was prior to menopause. I started doing 20 hour fast with a four hour eating window and within three months not only lost the weight but virtually cut out all of my hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms including insomnia. I eat nutritionally dense foods when I eat with occasional slices of sourdough bread or a bite or two of ice cream however my diet has always been very healthy. I am back to the way that I was in high school and I feel better and younger than I have for the majority of my adult life. I definitely do believe there is an interplay between our sex hormones and fasting. It has allowed my libido to stay intact, my skin looks better than it has in years and I have noticed thickening of my hair and strengthening of my nails. All the way around it has been a total game changer!
Thank you for sharing I'm 65 and never had a weight problem until menopause. I'v been doing 16:8 Now i will stretch this to 18:6. Thank you for your experience
I just started a little over a week ago and I'm following the same 4 hour window. Do you eat a certain amount of calories? I mean, do you try to eat the same amount of calories that you normally would when you were trying to lose weight eating during a typical day?
3 Daily Hacks : 1. Focus on eating whole foods (Don't worry about carbs or anything else like Keto or Veganism etc..). Natural foods. 2. Avoid processed foods. 3. Don't eat all the time.
If you are insulin resistant, pre-diabetic, diabetic or have metabolic issues, then carbs are an issue in your diet. Eating unprocessed whole foods is definitely good advice.

I love Dr Fung. I have all his books. I am an RN, my husband is a physician. We have done intermittent fasting for years. Love the way it makes us feel. But more importantly, we like what it does for our bloodwork.
I was a sick nurse years ago until I went to a medical conference and met Dr Fung for the first time and my sick life changed for the better.I started fasting even when my traditional doctor told me not to do that. When sicknesses and diabeties was disappearing and all my lab work coming back with great results He started asking me tons of questions. I still fast drink spring water and healthy eating I got off of meds and haven't been on nothing but healthy foods and good water
Omg. I’m a grandmother, looking after 2 of my grandchildren everyday. I am guilty of supplying treats to both children daily. I am instantly going to clear out my pantry of processed snacks.
Don't forget to explain in simple terms why Granma isn't going to feed you the junk snacks. Rather why don't you make some fresh goodies with them as a cooking lesson? My grandmother used to teach us recipes that I still use to this day-great memories.
I am also a grandmother and guilty of providing snacks every day. I didn't realize what a problem it can cause to snack. I'm so glad I found this video. There is so much valuable information contained in this one video that it blew me away. It all makes perfect sense and can be easily applied without purchasing some special remedy. I'm so thankful for this.
I, too, am a gramna-- my name is Gramma Sugar (yikes) because my real name is Cande. Coming up with real food snacks is hard! My regular charge is seven. He's a growing little boy. He likes a combination of Goldfish, carrots, frozen peas (I know...) and chocolate chips. This is by no means perfect. It's a daily challenge. Today, though, I got in a good one. Last night we had fish (that he and his dad had caught and frozen). There was some left over so I pulled out the fish and cut up in attractive tiny pieces (not too much) and warmed it in the microwave for 15 seconds. He devoured it (along with the other items). I didn't even tell him or ask him if he wanted it. I just put it in front of him while he was reading his comic book. I felt charged, like I deserved a medal (I'm not kidding).
Since I started intermittent fasting, a couple of years ago, I have one very small meal and one regular meal every day. No snacking. I also do cold showers. I feel amazing, better than I have in years. Thanks for all your information it really helps 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I discovered Dr Fung 4 years ago when I started the keto diet and intermittent fasting. The logic he presents is so clearly articulated. I lost 33lbs in 3 months and was the easiest thing I had done. 4 years later I still get happy to hear interviews with Dr. Fung.
@@tracybradford7950 the beauty of it was no exercise but because I felt great and had much more energy I might have been more active than I usually was. I didn’t do day fasts I just had a 4-6 hour feeding window. Lunch around 2 and dinner at 6 or 7.
@@westfield90 oh wow ok! 33 lbs in 3 months that’s exactly what I need….I love how I feel when I fast! I’ve stopped and it’s hard to get back in the routine of things! How did you eat Keto Only?
Dr. Fung helped me lose fourty pounds and counting in four months. I did intermittent fasting and my body is used to it now. I don’t even miss food anymore. My anxiety went away, my BP went back to normal, my eye floaters went away especially when I had the first Pfizer vaccine. I end up with so many eye floaters. I followed his intermittent fasting and after four months last year I lost fourty pounds. I’m hovering around mid 130’s lbs. I purée my vegetables and drink it everyday twice and my arthritis on my shoulder went away. It was so bad that my family doctor referred me to an orthopaedic surgeon. My right thumb was so painful, it went away also. Thank you. My big veins on my lower right leg just shrunk. I don’t know what happened there but I think I can connect it to my intermittent fasting. I have much more energy now and I’m less grumpy. My hair got thicker, my skin is glowing, my nails grows so fast, my eyesight got better . I have no high glucose , thank god ! I love life . Thank you Dr . Fung , Thank you God and the Universe. I’m very grateful for everything I have. ❤️❤️❤️
As a muslim, i have been taught to do fasting every Monday and Thursday and also during Ramadhan.. I will eat during sahur (begins at dawn) and break my fast during sunset. When i do that, my body will be more relax and the energy that i gain after that, is awesome.
@@alexbaker9967 Hi, yes it does work as long as you are eating healthy meals and not overindulging. But you need to be consistent with your fasting routines.
@@inishglowen You will need to have breakfast before sun rise and drink enough water then eat again at sunrise (healthy balanced meals for weight loss)
Growing up poor on a farm, we ate well, but our "snacks" were apples from our tree in season. We ate three meals a day, and we were generally healthy. My dad, as he got older, automatically reduced his meals to twice a day and maybe a light snack. There was no real snacking. He lived to be 91. Most of the problems I see in my generation are related to diet; our food choices, amount and frequency are screwed up.
And crap food being peddled with government backed blessing governments insurance companies etc want us to die when we are old we are only an expense to them ..
As someone who had an eating disorder....intermittent fasting allows me a wonderful space in my life that I don't have to think of food.....and it feels freeing....and freeing to know I have options...this is a choice...and im not bringing harm to my body but actually giving it more health. It has not triggered any problems for me but it has given me a feeling of healthy, balanced control.
Me too. I have two meals a day in 4 hour window 2pm and 6pm because I don’t think I get enough nutrients in one meal as I don’t like feeling too full up
I discovered the same thing. I have an eating disorder as well which is triggered by sugar and processed foods. Intermittent fasting gives you back your control
@@helenalovelock1030 I'm the same, I find I need to push myself to eat a full meal as it makes me feel so heavy and weighed down, so 2 smaller meals are the answer.

Was 320 4 years ago, today 190 18% body fat. Intermittent fasting, keto/low carb, and resistance weights while 14 hours fasted. High protein 1st meal after working out. Fill in the dead time walking, 8 to 10 K most every day. It saved my life. Thanks
I am 65 and grew up in the 60's and 70's, and yes it was just add Dr Fung said! You had your breakfast, lunch, and dinner and that was it. On special occasions we got dessert. I was always thin. Fast forward to the early 80's when I started having babies and the whole low fat-non fat phase came in. My hormones at this time went crazy, mood swings, PMS. I always thought my legs were my best feature and after this I've have cellulite like crazy, ever since! I've tried so many food plans and diets and nothing really worked especially in the long run. I started intermittent fasting (which I thought I would never do, cuz who can only eat in a small window every day!!!) And I have lost all the weight, my legs look so much better, and I feel great!! I eat a big lunch at noon and then something small before 4:00. In order to do this I kept a travel mug with me with hot water and lemon to sip and that curbed the hunger. I don't need to do that anymore. We really aren't supposed to be eating all the food we eat in this country. Besides the fact that most people aren't eating real food, it's all processed so they are actually getting no nutrition so they are hungry all the time!! I am so happy eating this way, and my body loves it!!
Mostly Dinner type stuff like- Brown Rice pasta with homemade presto, and a big salad. Turkey and cheese on gluten free bread and some chips. Fish with baked potato and salad My homemade pizza Thing like that. Later I may eat some cashews Sunflower seeds Goat yogurt Fruit
I find that fasting between 16-22 hours is easier than restricting calories and having smaller meals throughout the day, which makes me hungrier. I get full easier during my eating window and feel more satisfied and more conscious of what I eat.
I have just wrapped up my first week whole food intermittent fasting and notice more satiation and energy on much less food . What hunger comes up is so weak that I can eadily defeat it by busying myself with some small task . It just passes unnoticed . I have lost 5 pounds ! My blood pressure is now perfect and I am off my Metformin . I just do not need it . Theres nothing in my diet for it to work on and my glucose level is completely normal . I don't know if it is a typical first week but I am super please with my situation .
That's exactly how it works it took me the longest time to wrap my head around that because I have diet brain but I always come back to IF and I'm finally losing weight slowly but surely.
I’ve had many folks and friends who have debunked the practice of fasting. Thus I don’t discuss the topic anymore. I steer my own course and I thank Dr Fung for his expertise and experience.
I find this to be true.. my sister who has diabetes even when I told her about resistant starch... she didn't seem much to care😢 In the meantime I've lost 10 lb and 11 days... it was the easiest thing I've ever done... she didn't even bother to ask me how it all works : (
I am learning about fasting. I am now on OMAD and it is way easier than I thought!😃 Started to lose weight after being stuck. Thanks to Jason for waking me up I don’t need to eat every two hours.😊
Don't neglect longer fasts, too! Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! th-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/w-d-xo.html The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. I don’t think that’s ever going to happen as big pharma has such an influence on the medical system. People being sick with chronic illness is great for business.
Eating a healthy diet is not something medical schools teach. If they actually taught the right way to eat, we wouldn't need half the healthcare workers we have today.

I also am a 58-year-old woman in post menopause & practising intermittent fasting for some years now & in more recent months ramping it up to 20 hour fasting and seeing such positive results just as you said -physically with weight loss, abdominal circumference fat loss, new hair regrowth & nail growth, skin improvement, more even energy levels, body feels great -a lighter frame which moves smoothly & more comfortably & receiving lovely compliments from people that say I do not look my age at all. I have never enjoyed clothes so much as I do now and look forward to wearing & feeling lovely in them. Mentally I don’t have brain fog any more, are on a nice even keel of calmness and peace with myself . I feel fantastic and can’t help wishing I could’ve known and done this for myself so many decades sooner than now to have reaped these wonderful benefits of this fantastic practice. It just makes sense to eat in a window frame of time and taking food consumption under control instead of it dictating your life. It does take a bit of time to master some old ingrained habits & tweak daily life into some better patterns that serve your body & brain in a much better way -but so worth it. Do yourself a huge favour 🙌
A brilliant interview. Jason Fung’s advice and information is life changing! I am a diabetic type 2 and went to see a diabetic specialist who was really into eating frequently and medications. She was working with an intern whose comments about Jason Fung were so derogatory! I shudder at the thought of his graduation into a newly graduated full blown diabetic specialist! Drugs drugs drugs!
Love Dr. Fung advice. I don't fast, but when I look at Keto, Carnivore, or Veg diets they have 1 thing in common. They are real food, not processed. I'm 66, I do work out and walk 5 miles a day. I'm at 12% body fat. 2 years ago I was 45 lbs overweight.
technical sense keto, carnivore is a fast-mimicking diet. that is the difference. fasting's focus is on hormones. and high protein or high fat diets do not spike insulin. i.e. body is in a fasted state. ketones are produced. fasting decreases insulin and increases ketones (eventually). personally those diest dont make sense to me. at least not long-term. not sure doing that (depending on how you interpret it. you do eat vegetables, fiber?) longterm for next 30 years will be a good idea. pooping will hurt one day of fiber is no longer in your diet. lol.
Dr Fung is amazing. I've been intermittent fasting and doing some long fast, longs was 84 hrs I've lost 90lbs in 7 months I was 325 at 6'4" I'm now 233lbs. I my inflammation is at bay and now I don't throw my back out every week do to high inflammation.
Thank you Dr. Jason for years now I am very confident about my blood sugar issue I holistically followed your intermittent fasting and now I can honestly say that I no longer about worried about my blood sugar I learned the art of intermittent fasting thank you thank you Dr. Jason Fung at 74 I do not take a single dose of any maintenance for blood sugar, hypertension and cholesterol.
I am a nurse and was taught about calories and small and frequent meals. I just watched Dr Berg then Dr Fung then I try on intermittent fasting because I can’t starve to lose weight. It is amazing. I am not hungry like I was used to, no snack and I lost 4 lbs for 10 days. First week, I lost only 2 lbs, now I lost one lb per day. I just go 16-18: 6-8. I feel more energetic, no coffee but no sleepy. I just need to lose more 7 lbs for target 115 lbs. But I will continue eating16:8 as my regular meals with occasional meal on holidays or party. I learned about fat diet but I am scared about cholesterol. Now I understand. Thank you Dr Fung.
Remember, the sacrifice is only required when you are overweight. Once you have reached your target weight and have learned and adopted the strategies that got you to your target weight loss goal then you can enjoy "a cookie" or "treats" without falling back into doing that again on a daily basis or too frequently. You can enjoy a beer and pizza or night out....but be strict and disciplined to lose the excess weight first to regain your health and vitality and fitness and then enjoy a healthier more active lifestyle which can include the odd occasional treat.
@@k-h969 I highly recommend it. My dad has lost thirty one pounds, Mom's down 41, my cousin Kari 80 lbs, cousin pat 15+, brother Ryan 7 so far. Good luck, hope you do great
From my experience, when I was on a high carb diet which involved a lot of bread, pasta and rice, it really was about willpower and counting calories. If I didn't keep an eye on it, I'd overeat. But when I switched to low carb, on most days I felt satiated before I reached the point where I would be overeating and counting calories soon became unnecessary. And it made fasting easier.
Thank you for interviewing two of my favourite speakers on this subject ❤ I have lost 5 stone (70 lb) using keto / intermittent fasting in the last two years. 🙏
Honestly - when I started watching this and saw that it goes for almost 2 hours I did not think I would get thru it all. But I did. Super INTERESTING VIDEO. Thank you!
I’m 51 and 9 weeks ago started keto mainly meat and fasting,I’ve lost 31lb my blood sugar is normal and the energy is crazy,I feel like il explode if I don’t do something, I’ve gone from sitting on the sofa all day feeling ill to walking 5 miles and only stop at 5 because my hubby is worried I’m doing to much 😂😂 I feel 20 years younger
I intermittent fast and I look and feel the best I ever have before in my life. I am now trying to get to 3 day fasting. Thanks to Jason, I’m so grateful.
Fasting with keto: 25lbs gone in three months with snacking and loving meals. You CAN snack on keto. No sugar, no grains, under 50 carbs a day. Love it! Down two sizes totally healthy. My doctor was shocked!! Keto, keto, keto with fasting…which is basically just “delaying” meals…no hunger!
Low carb, 16 hr intermittent fasting, 1500-2000 cals intake. Intense workouts 5 days per week. Did it back in 2020 and lost 55lbs in 89 days. The only carbs I ate were low glycemic. Cut out fruit, totally, even though I love fruit. Small amounts of dairy as I don't drink milk since 2006. Fasting is the truth!
All due respect it wasn't the fasting. It was the 1500-2000 calories and exercise. 👊🏼 I'm sure the low carb helped keep your insulin low for prime fat burning.
@@mando3651 Fasting+ketosis is so overpowered you have no idea lol, lost 64 pounds just not eating sugars and no breakfasts with no excercise whatsoever (besides walking to school). Also, it is not recommended to do extended high intensity anaerobic excercise in ketosis, light excercise (aerobic) is best. Low carb might be another matter though.
@@mando3651 you are not wrong. but you are also not right. if you do it right, you are only getting in 2000 calories in your eating window. as opposed if you stretch out 2000 calories (which I think is a fallacy - studies say people miss count always) throw your waking day you will not only be angry you would not stick with it. after some time or be accuarte in the calorie count.
This is an excellent video. So much important information. It’s sad how wrong we’ve been for so long. I’ve been over weight for 50 years. Started Weight Watchers in my teens. This is so on target I could cry.
I struggled with emotional eating all my life, sometimes I still do. I know Dr. Fung is focused moreso on the science of food and fasting, but there's a major component he doesn't address here, (nor should we expect him to.) It's a mental game for a lot of us. And that mental game affects our physical health more than we realize. From everyday stressors to childhood trauma; all of these life experiences mold our mindset and essentially, our overall health. Especially when it comes to food. I learned this the hard way. But mentors like Dr. Fung helped me shift my focus on the science instead of swelling on life's hardships and the psychological effect they had on me and my health. Today I'm 70 pounds down, a personal trainer and health coach that focuses on whole foods, more specifically the Anti-inflammatory Diet anf intermittent fasting. I also work with clients virtually. I still experience hardships but it was my mindset that needed to change. It was a domino effect that ultimately helped me FINALLY overcome emotional eating and my physical health improved. MINDSET. keyword.
Yes, we may experience stress and hardships due to our current situation or past experiences, but no matter what we’ve been through the feelings are still the same. For example, if we’re feeling stressed then we’re going to feel anxious or we could feel depressed and have low serotonin.concentrating on whole foods that are on processed during our eating window is going to regulate our hormones which intern will stabilise our mood. Take oats for example they have got melatonin, Trytophan, magnesium which causes you to feel quite relaxed. Which intern decreases your cortisol and the tryptophan helps to make serotonin which makes you relaxed and you don’t crave any more food and feel feel full.
Love Dr Fung. So glad I discovered his teachings on water fasts it's been the only regimen that addresses hormonal issues that cause weight gain. The weight just melts off without any exercise at all and I look years younger omg.
@@Awholeadult why thank you. I do the fast of OMAD = One Meal A Day. If you eat the right thing you won't be hungry one bit. I have steak grilled with oak wood and slathered with butter. I have some egg salad sometimes. Basically fatty meats but you'd have the best success preventing hunger pangs if you eat fatty beef. As Dr. Ken Berry on TH-cam says "Beef, Butter, Bacon and Eggs". Eat that everyday and you'll see major success. I have a sweet tooth so I make Keto desserts like ice cream, brownies etc. Feel free to ask whatever questions.
@@tisha4lives But I thought Bacon is unhealthy? Also how did you manage to transition to OMAD? I am new to this and struggling to stick to it. I find no carb quite boring :(
You can also do this eating plant-based and have a very filling, chock-full of nutrients, and satisfying meal with a super variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and nuts and seeds. I have been completely plant-based for 3 years and love the variety. My inflammation and pain in my arthritic knee reduced dramatically within weeks, and I lost 50lbs. I am glad to transition now to OMAD to feel even better, live longer, and lose the rest of the weight I need to lose. It’s a relief to free up my days from meal prep and eating!
I appreciate the debunking of "women can't fast" (hi I'm a woman and I fast) but please don't be afraid to name the issue, Dr Rangan - women's responses and biology are still seen as atypical within medicine. When people say "women respond differently", the implication is that male responses are the baseline. I can tell you're conscious of this in the way you talk about it 😊 but it would be really awesome to clarify if/how male and female responses differ throughout the conversation (if it's relevant), rather than as a separate section on 'Women'. Hope you don't mind the feedback, this was an awesome podcast!
Yes--I've been told that as a woman--especially a post-menopausal woman--that I can't fast. But now after 7 months of mostly alternate day fasting I am down over 85 lbs.
IF and OMAD works very well If you eat the right foods. Just like Dr. Fung said, if you eat junk food, it just makes you hungry and miserable. If you choose foods that keep your blood Glucose level, you will feel very satisfied and you can stick to your eating window. I started out 16:8 and now I am doing OMAD, I dropped 12 lbs in less than a month. I plan to do a 48 day fast soon, then a little longer one for health benefits.
Love this man! His teachings have changed my life. I am down 45 lbs. Gained 85 lbs from long term high doses of Prednisone. (I have R. A.) Nolonger on Prednisone, better control of my flare ups. I have no doubt when I get new blood work back my NALD will be reversed. #livingketo #loveIFOMAD
I too have RA even though the Rheumy says it’s PsA, anyway I started Carnivore and the pain in my fingers and hands are gone, my question is this, how long have you been on KETO, how many carbs do you eat per day? I was on keto 9 years but hands started hurting and KETO didn’t seem to be helping me anymore. This is why I went to carnivore and fasting again

Mind blown Dr. Fung again! When you compared our stored fat as the amount of calories we have to use! Just like a stuffed fridge. 😅 That image was perfect! Thank you

One thing I don't think he has mentioned, but I have read many times the importance of drinking electrolytes during a fast is quite important and a good idea.. not sure if anyone else knows about this.
Absolutely! Electrolytes are a must while water fasting for 24 hours or more. Magnesium, potassium, salt are extremely important to take while doing longer fasts as mentioned above. I'm on day 4 of a water fast and I take fasting electrolyte capsules 4 times a day.
I always thought eating 6 times a day was crazy....it causes you to be obsessed with food😳😳😳 and starts the obesity cycle. ADF is awesome. Thanks Dr. Jason "common sense" Fung.
I do 2 types of “RESISTANCE TRAINING”, both physically and mentally. Weight lifting “physical resistance training”, and the avoiding processed foods/snacks “mental resistance training”(especially in the grocery store aisles) plus using strong mental resistance after seeing/hearing enticing food advertisements. I have a strict personal law where I must strongly say to myself “RESIST” when under the spell of a delicious food advertisement or exposure, and my biggest rule to follow is to never be a mentally weak wimp and allow the mental picture temptation of a delicious food snack or dessert break my RESISTANCE TRAINING LAWS❗️

In India we gave fasting depending on the different States and Regions. We keep fasting in Navrathiri(9days fasting). As I'm a Tamizhian I used to keep fasting for our God before. These fasting are for giving organs a kind of rest to come back to normal. We eat carbs like rice, whole wheat flour Indian breads(chapathis or rotis). Lentils, veggies. We were happy for it
I work at home, so this is easy for me. Normal breakfast at 10:00, large lunch at 14:00(after workout), small dinner at 17:00. 17 hour fast every day I go to the gym. On weekends, I skip breakfast, and move lunch to 13:00.
As a master trainer, mental health practitioner and weight management practitioner- I Amen 🙏 all of this🙏💪👏Absolutely correct ✅ Saw it personally and in my practice 🤝 Ps. Subscribed✅
I'm in my early 30's now and I eat only once some days and twice on other days. Started off by cutting sugar except for a teaspoon total a day in my tea, then low carb (by this time I lost 10 kilograms - which did not go even with intense exercise) and now intermittent fasting. I was on the verge of hypothyroidism and always felt lethargic, now I feel better than ever and I'm able to do things (like playing football (soccer)), which I couldn't in my late 20's. Thanks to all the advice from Doctors - Rober Lustig, Rangan Chatterjee, Jason Fung, Eric Berg, Paul Mason & many other researchers. My only concern is my parents & sister don't seem to care about what and how they eat and are always on snacking spree. For those who say they can't, unless you have some medical condition which requires good care, you can do it. Start slow and at least throw away sugar and packeted food as a first step.
I've been fasting 18/6 n I've GAINED weight. I'm 59 yr old n work 8 hours were 7 are on my feet standing/walking. Tried keto n lost weight at first then again it went back up. Also constipated me seriously bad I almost ended up in hospital. So I think calories do matter. (Update, 24/2/23, I wasn't eating enough greens previously n too much beef. Switched to oily fish which is much better for me. Listen to your body n just try something bit different if it's not quite working. You don't fail, you learn. Helped me to remember that.)
I am 63 and I work at Amazon... a job where you are on your feet and busy all day it's almost a can't lose scenario with IF... I lost 6 lb in 9 days... now up to 10 lb and 12 days... I am so sorry this didn't work for you😢
*Of course* calories matter. Dr. Fung has said that if you eat too much in your eating window you will not lose weight. I never lost weight until I started doing alternate day fasting.
I love this so much--if all calories were the same, we could do the "donut diet" . Donut for breakfast. Donut for lunch and Cream filled donut for supper at approximately 300-400 calories each all under 1000 calories. Does anyone think you would lose weight? NO.
In today’s society, we have food readily available ( 24/7) fast food chains have super-sized meal portions. When we think we’re hungry, food is a phone call away ( door dash). Today most people are super-sized. This is totally unhealthy. Dr Fung is right
I'm fasting since 24 hours now and doing light exercises and I'm feeling good especially after getting motivated. I want to get rid of my stored Fat. Managing Daily calorie intake not helping me lose weight so this is my last tool.
Im 28, Ive been intermittent fasting for about 1.5 months now. Lost about 20 lbs.I did a 72 hour water fast recently, the second night was rough but was okay overall. my shoulder that had been giving me issues for a while, healed over that time, I cant make this up. Fasting is the greatest health tool ever. Thanks doc
This has been SO helpful. I so enjoy Dr. Chatterjee's interviews with various physicians, health experts, etc. He himself is so knowledgable, but most importantly, kind and respectful to his guests. I really appreciate that he truly listens to them, affirms them and is so kind to them. Also, I did REALLY enjoy this interview with Dr. Fung (same kind of mannerisms) and knowledgable on this subject of fasting. Love the way he explains so well the benefits AND physiologically what is happening. Love the overfilled refrigerator/grocery shopping analagy Dr. Fung uses. His analogies are awesome! This has been life changing for me. Thank you for this helpful information!!!
Fasting and keto are the only things that have given true relief from my Crohn's disease. The push to always be eating is really frustrating. Even when in the hospital with a bowel obstruction they are always asking if you have passed gas so they can start sending the food trays up. I really wonder if Crohn's is basically insulin resistance of the intestine causing inflammation. Anyway, this was an amazing talk, so much info I'm watching it again. Thank you Dr. Fung
You are asked if you've passed gas because it's an indication you no longer have a bowel obstruction and one of the things that needs to happen to safely discharge you home. But you are right, tolerating a diet is on that list as well, so a clear liquid tray would be next in line.
@@amberd6696 Yep I get you don't want to discharge someone who can't actually eat yet if they're going to go home, eat and obstruct right away again. Problem is the focus on getting you able to eat so they can discharge, not actually finding the root cause of the inflammation and letting the gut rest and heal. I had 5 obstructions in one year and a surgery, a week or more in the hospital each time. Really wonder if I would have been fine after the first obstruction if they told me to go home, not eat for two weeks THEN start liquids THEN whole foods instead of suppressing my immune system and telling me to eat low fiber (terrible advice btw, I need lots of fiber since the surgery to avoid bile acid diarrhea). Who knows, I may have been able to keep my career and marriage, not that either was worth keeping lol.
Dr Jason you don’t have to prove and convince anyone that nothing bad will happen if one doesn’t eat ! It is definitely good for us ! The problem is how to get out of the eating addiction/ habit/reflex ?
I beat diabetes and lost 80 lbs and although I gained 20 back my a1c is normal. I love your books and videos. I mainly focused on intermittent fasting for 4 months and got off meds the doctors told me I’d have to take the rest of my life and 1 year to lose the weight through combination of exercise with fasting and low sugar. My liver is still fatty so now I’m going to do less fats now and fats a bit less
Great conversation! We've been intermittent fasting every day for a few years now (since reading Jason's book The Obesity Code). We eat between 8.15am and 5.15pm, and fast for around 15 hours in every 24. We can be flexible with this if we're out for the day and eat our last meal earlier, or our breakfast later and it's working well for us. Thanks to both of you.
Why do you start eating so early in the day? He has some additional videos explaining that eating that early is usually not necessary or desirable. We are our least hungriest in the morning. You may have a specific reason for it, everyone is different but it stood out to me so I thought I would ask.
@@danyalraza9707 I'm sorry, that doesn't make sense. Of course you're going to be fasting while sleeping, how would you not be fasting while you are sleeping? In order to get 16 to 18 hours of fasting most people find that not eating earlier in the day makes sense because when you wake up your body is not primed to be hungry, you have been using stored glycogen and fat overnight. You may notice that if you're hungry when you go to sleep at night you are not hungry when you wake up first thing in the morning. This is because the hunger hormone, ghrelin is low in the morning. There will be exceptions, but generally this is what most people do because it makes sense physiologically. What did you mean when you said fasting while sleeping, was it a typo, what is the research you were referring to?

Last night we had fish (that he and his dad had caught and frozen). There was some left over so I pulled out the fish and cut up in attractive tiny pieces (not too much) and warmed it in the microwave for 15 seconds. He devoured it (along with the other items). I didn't even tell him or ask him if he wanted it. I just put it in front of him while he was reading his comic book. I felt charged, like I deserved a medal (I'm not kidding).

I wish my mother could understand this idea.
Could you give an example of what you eat for your big and small meal and how much of each you eat ?
Mostly Dinner type stuff like-
Brown Rice pasta with homemade presto, and a big salad.
Turkey and cheese on gluten free bread and some chips.
Fish with baked potato and salad
My homemade pizza
Thing like that.
Later I may eat some cashews
Sunflower seeds
Goat yogurt
Fruit

I agree. I have found it easier than when I tried to eat smaller meals.
That's exactly how it works it took me the longest time to wrap my head around that because I have diet brain but I always come back to IF and I'm finally losing weight slowly but surely.

Don't neglect longer fasts, too!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! th-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/w-d-xo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance.
In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.

Love Dr. Fung advice. I don't fast, but when I look at Keto, Carnivore, or Veg diets they have 1 thing in common.
They are real food, not processed. I'm 66, I do work out and walk 5 miles a day. I'm at 12% body fat. 2 years ago
I was 45 lbs overweight.
Well done I’m also 66 I’ve lost 20 kgs excercise regularly and love it I feel like a young boy again 😀
technical sense keto, carnivore is a fast-mimicking diet. that is the difference. fasting's focus is on hormones. and high protein or high fat diets do not spike insulin. i.e. body is in a fasted state. ketones are produced. fasting decreases insulin and increases ketones (eventually). personally those diest dont make sense to me. at least not long-term. not sure doing that (depending on how you interpret it. you do eat vegetables, fiber?) longterm for next 30 years will be a good idea. pooping will hurt one day of fiber is no longer in your diet. lol.

Try some ocasional three day fasts...also shrink your eating window...I do a 22 to two...cut out all drinks containing calories...

Glad for you 😊👍
What was your IF window? And did you counted calories? 🤔
Hunger is where the magic happens.
He probably meant intermittent fasting

At weight watchers they love to watch their weight😂
MINDSET. keyword.
So beautifully said.
Same here. I lost 40lbs in 3 months. No exercise.
@@tisha4lives wow thats amazing what sort of fasts were you doing?
Thanks! Can you post a couple of meals you eat suring your open window?
I love jason fung best clear easy book on fatburning for 90 percent of modern wotrld citizens
I am a former competitive bodybuilder and i can tell you first hand. This Dr Rangan is 100% on the money, and even with my experience, i am still following his advice. Thanks for helping us improve Dr Rangan.
Thank you for this interview! It has been so healing for my soul.
I cannot tell you how many times doctors have meanly accused me of lying when I've stuck to the calorie count. I'm crying tears of gratitude. I have since found a way to eat to get to a healthy weight and it includes everything presented here.
This interview answered all my questions about how it all works. I feel much more confident now that I can succeed with my new lifestyle

He has definitely touched on salt in different videos.
If you’re not very active and have magnesium rich foods then taking a 1/2 spoon of salt in water is sufficient

As a master trainer, mental health practitioner and weight management practitioner- I Amen 🙏 all of this🙏💪👏Absolutely correct ✅ Saw it personally and in my practice 🤝

Great tips! Keep being an example for your family and others.
Might not be drinking enough water and I find lean meat constipating but fattier meats digest fine without issues.
Dr Fung is right
I began IF on March 28th, I've lost 30lbs 😊
I'm fasting since 24 hours now and doing light exercises and I'm feeling good especially after getting motivated. I want to get rid of my stored Fat. Managing Daily calorie intake not helping me lose weight so this is my last tool.
Im 28, Ive been intermittent fasting for about 1.5 months now.
He is so right about the rice. When you are really really hungry, almost anything seems good to eat.

@@Kyarrix We get up at 6am or 6.30am, and start work around 8.30am (we're self-employed) and it just fits in with our routine.
@@Kyarrix there's been research done that if you're going to do 16/8 fasting, it's better to be fasting while sleeping than fasting in the morning.
