The older season 1 animation makes Rock Bottom feel really creepy and isolating, the undersea version of some random liminal town you stop at for gas on a road trip.
I prefer small and desolate Rock Bottom to super advanced Rock Bottom, it should be like a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Fits more thematically too since the abyssal zone is known to for life being extremely sparse. It is a big part of why fish are so focused on catching and keeping any food that does happen to cross their path.
bikini bottom, the name like, it should be located indeed before the coral reefs and lively shallow water regions right at the coast. the wast strands of sand, and in some episodes rocks and kelp forrests are verys important, like in the real zone of the earth.
Me too. The super advanced Rock Bottom from the video games and "Food PBBBTH! Truck" take away what made it so foreign and mysterious in the first place.
I think the opposite is better, rock bottom should be a big place, but without a lot of stuff, with a lot of empty spaces in between buildings and people.
It's kind of funny that it should be Halloween time, but when I go to the grocery store , everything is already Christmas and Halloween is on clearance sale. But it's good to see something that reminds me that it's not Christmas time yet.
Right? I went to a homegoods store in July and they had more Halloween then they did when we revisited in mid September. Its very irritating x3. If you want to get any Halloween decorations, they expect you to shop months in advance or you dont get shit
@@IrisThatOneGothMf I don't think it's an obsession, stores just prepare for the Christmas season earlier every year. Many people say that it has gotten out of hand and find it annoying, but the shops still push it.
Chapter 2 of Employee of the Month has such a cozy feel to it. You're stranded in Rock Bottom due to bad weather, and it's constantly raining the entire chapter with that eternal nighttime atmosphere. It doesn't capture the alien and mysterious vibe from the original episode, neither SpongeBob nor Patrick are particularly afraid of the place, and none of the locals speak with the Rock Bottom accent, but I really like the setting in its own right. Sometimes I would just turn the level on to listen to the rain or the receptionist typing on the keyboard at WSEA. Chapter 4 from that game was also pretty interesting. I thought they did a nice job dreaming up their own unique location for the series with Bottom's Up. It felt like it could be where Tentacle Acres is located.
Tbh Employee of the Month is probably the only video game that I'd consider canon to the show. The additions it makes just have a more vanilla+ feeling than say bfbb or truth or square where the additions that make feel a little too.. grandiose to be canon.
@Yuni-is-Schrodingers-Fox I recently replayed that game, and I definitely agree that it holds up very well as feeling true to the canon. All of the locations either match up with what was in the show or are new but thematically consistent with the show. Like with rock bottom, all the new locations are placed in a similar way to the buildings shown in the show, being mostly by themselves and low in number.
I'd like if the other places in Rock Bottom (The Rusty Anchor, WSEA and Merlin's House) had the advanced darkness Rock Bottom skybox, aka just a black void, because all those places have the generic nighttime bikini bottom sky and it always felt a bit out of place for me. I'm a big fan of Bottom's Up, placing it near Kelp Forest is an interesting decision, kinda reflects how big mansions and villas like that irl are always in desolate areas or next to forests.
I honestly prefer it having little to no backstory though, and I hope they keep it that way. It’s iconic, but it’s mystery and unsettling vibes is what makes it iconic.
This episode reminds me of that one time where I took the wrong bus. Ended up driving an hour into nowhere before getting out, heading back to a desolate bus station in the middle of nowhere. And all that just for taking a bus to a destination where I could've easily walked. Simply because I didn't know the routes. Ended up getting to my actual destination by foot.
Always feels bad when this happens, especially at night. I once overslept on a train heading away from the city after a tiring day and woke up 3 stations after where I'm supposed to drop off. Literally crossed the province border. Good thing they still ran 2 more services back to the city.
Writer Mr. Lawrence stated that the idea for "Rock Bottom" came from his own moment of getting on the wrong bus as a kid and the bus driver going the entire route before he would let him and his friend off in the right place, which frightened them both.
I've done that multiple times and it always reminds me of this episode. I also fell asleep on the bus one time and my phone died, that genuinely sucked so much
Bikini atoll is a real life site for nuclear testing... bikini bottom itself is based on bikini atoll. Rock bottom is just outside of bikini bottom so it's close to the nuclear effected area.
One game appearance that I'd like to point out is that Rock Bottom is in the very first SpongeBob game, Legend of the Lost Spatula, as the second to last location. The bus stop sign and candy machine are right at the start of the area. There are deep sea fish as enemies and gloves to float up on. It's a pretty neat game that not many people seem to know about.
i liked rock bottom, marine life is somewhat well depicted in spongebob, and down the continental shelf ist deep, at the rock bottom. and its dark, thats another kind of dark than just night we know from the surface. rock bottom is very good.
1:55 Seeing Spongebob wind up in anger and then retreat into his pants in a similar fashion that a turtle retreats into their shell, then proceeding to throw a tantrum is possibly the funniest thing about the Rock Bottom episode.
In the worm episode, when Patrick convinces the town to push it somewhere else. Do they push it in Rock Bottom? My memory thinks it looks pretty similar.
Rock Bottom is probably my favorite fictional location ever. Its just so eerie and atmospheric, but also weirdly comforting in a way, idk how to explain it. Like i just wanna explore it
Something that bothers me about both BFBB and EotM's Rock Bottom is that the new buildings they added don't have the correct font the bus station and enter sign have, that's one of the most unique things about the place for me and they don't get it right. Here's a fun fact: SuperSponge for the PS1 predicted the Graveyard location, or rather it's likely a coincidence since i'm sure not a lot of people know about the game so they added a graveyard to the town because it fit the creepy vibe. Also from the same game is the "Lonely Souls" area, which in the PS1 version seems to be just a desert or wasteland area but in the GBA one is some sorta roman ruins area, which would've been interesting to expand upon in BFBB, or other games, since RB is a frequently used location on games in spite of it's 2 appearances
You Must play pc-port for Employee of the Month. Aside from being a solid spongebob adventure, it has the best Rock Bottom of all videogame adaptations.
If you play employee of the month, please do it on a live stream! Ive enjoyed the other streams. My head cannon for inconsistent maps / locations is.. the sand on the ocean floor moves, so buildings and layouts change due to ocean currents. And im glad you mentioned your Ren n Stimpy channel in the last video. Im watching those before sleep.
I absolutely loved all the Sponge Bob point&click PC games and actually replayed them several times as adult. Unlike action console games, PC adventures stick very closely to the original show's locations, characters and narrative style so it feels very much like interactive show where all the known places and characters are as they are in the show, but you can explore the things that were not shown in the show which feels super cool
Can you do a video on patchy awe I love this video by the way Rock bottom is amazing and I always thought them spitting was really funny the sound track is fr creepy
i like to think of Rock Bottom as a continuos downward path that, if you go further than the bus station, might as well be another steep drop if you go far enough into the darkness...
I think canon is a very not necessary thing to worry about with some things in spongebob due to many things just outright not making any sense or changing by the episode.. I dont think its bad at all tbh since I think inconsistency somehow fits Spongebob all around and even makes many episodes feel unique, fever dream like or even uncanny.. I think when looking into what is considered Canon and not Canon for Rock Bottom is to maybe consider neither one but both.. Video games need to make a map and make said map interesting, Rock Bottom is probably portrayed perfectly to an extent with whats down in Rock Bottom but in the show Rock Bottom definitely seemed very open and deserted which could mean all these landmarks and buildings could be in the actual location but far apart and I kinda like this idea of having it as open as possible with some buildings there since there is some form of life down there.. I dont know, I am just rambling now.. XD

we not even have halloween stuff, we have christmas past august...
That's just you living in a bad area... all the good stores have halloween stuff out currently... sorry you live there
Right? I went to a homegoods store in July and they had more Halloween then they did when we revisited in mid September. Its very irritating x3. If you want to get any Halloween decorations, they expect you to shop months in advance or you dont get shit
idk how people are that obsessed with Christmas tbh. Halloween has better decor, and everything.
@@IrisThatOneGothMf I don't think it's an obsession, stores just prepare for the Christmas season earlier every year. Many people say that it has gotten out of hand and find it annoying, but the shops still push it.
01:13. The word you're looking for is Vertical
I think that might have been a trap… ☝️😒

i love the creepy vibe of the place i even do still feel that creepy vibe when it shows up in the modern stuff

Half of that Employee of the Month video game is built upon areas and locations that are never seen in the TV show and I love it.
That was my impression as well. Loved that rainy night vibe. Cozy indeed.
I'd like if the other places in Rock Bottom (The Rusty Anchor, WSEA and Merlin's House) had the advanced darkness Rock Bottom skybox, aka just a black void, because all those places have the generic nighttime bikini bottom sky and it always felt a bit out of place for me.

They should do more episodes based on Rock Bottom. Feels kind of scary if the creators have explored it besides two episodes and the games.
I honestly prefer it having little to no backstory though, and I hope they keep it that way. It’s iconic, but it’s mystery and unsettling vibes is what makes it iconic.
the fact that there are like 5 channels that cover 95% spongebob is truly amazing

"hey lois, this reminds me of that one time i-"
Im so glad I don't have to take the bus anymore. 🙌
Been there, done that. It sucks. My condolences
I've done that multiple times and it always reminds me of this episode. I also fell asleep on the bus one time and my phone died, that genuinely sucked so much
1:03 is that a whale sound? Absolutely the perfect choice for the ambience of that place/scene
If I could live anywhere in the SpongeBob universe, it would be Rock Bottom. It looks so cozy and peaceful 🥰
The Rock Bottomites are probably among the most hinged characters in the series.
The show portraits Rock Bottom as a dark and scary place, but I would like to chill there tbh.
(If I could breathe underwater)
This mans dedication trying to make sense out of the nonsensical is admirable.
Rock bottom has always been one of my favorite episodes, I love the creepy atmosphere.
It’s one of the most exciting locations in the whole show! I’m glad they expanded on it in later seasons.
I'd like a video on the Flying Dutchman. Both one analyzing his ship and analyzing how he's changed over the years
Battle for bikini bottom is the go to for spongebob games
Ong, might re-download it tonight on my PS5 fr fr 😂🔥
its the worst
Mine was Atlantis Squarepantis
It’s amazing. I actually played a custom zombies map few days ago of it on world at war it’s really fun
Movie game ftw
1:55, this is why the old SpongeBob is way better.
I love when Rick Diaz drops these SpongeBob narration videos
Rock bottom is like chernobly
Bikini atoll is a real life site for nuclear testing... bikini bottom itself is based on bikini atoll. Rock bottom is just outside of bikini bottom so it's close to the nuclear effected area.
this episode gave me anxiety
Employee of the month was my very young childhood computer gaming experience. It is probably one of the first games I played. I’m currently 19.
You're my favourite Spongetuber. Every upload is a blast from you.
Rock bottom scared me so much as a kid no matter how many times I’d watch it
Great video, but just as a heads up at 7:34 the 'tongue sounds' they are making is called 'blowing raspberries'
Rock Bottom in employe of the month has such a nice vibe to it. Like rainy nights do.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention that the bus station looks like a submarine
Me too.
This is my favorite sponge Bob episode
Can you explore the treedome next?
The employee of the month game is one of my favorite games of all time. Its just so unique and made with care.
I love rock bottom, not that it’s so iconic but it has the coolest fish characters there.
One game appearance that I'd like to point out is that Rock Bottom is in the very first SpongeBob game, Legend of the Lost Spatula, as the second to last location. The bus stop sign and candy machine are right at the start of the area. There are deep sea fish as enemies and gloves to float up on. It's a pretty neat game that not many people seem to know about.

rock bottom is very good.
This video just reminded me that I used to have the "Employee of the Month" game for the computer. I have no idea what happened to it.
You really need to play the Spongebob games. I loved the Spongebob movie game as a kid.
1:55 Seeing Spongebob wind up in anger and then retreat into his pants in a similar fashion that a turtle retreats into their shell, then proceeding to throw a tantrum is possibly the funniest thing about the Rock Bottom episode.

One of my favorite locations in Spongebob
Favorite episode of all time if I lived in and was from the SpongeBob universe I would be from Rock bottom
Awe should make a channel about arthur. Just so he can replace the "hey!" In his intro with D.W.'s or vice versa
Spot on observation frfr
I think the intro is actually Quavo’s adlib “aye” but i’m just a part-time hair splitter

@jay_344 maybe. No clue who that is though lol

Real some of those sponge games look so interesting
The fact that in the original episode Rock Bottom is like a bus station a restroom and a vending machine is too funny
Spooky season? The only thing spooky is the second hurricane in 2 weeks coming right for me!
I actually found rock bottom kinda calming
That cemetary joke was killer tho
the spongebob adventure games were often quite good. you'd like them. at their better points they almost feel like an extension of the show's world.
I thought "Rock Bottom was shown in more episodes than one?" But i stopped watching spongebob in like 2012 really i don't like the newer episodes.

The deep sea fish look scarier than those in rock bottom, believe me
U should explore rock bottom in the bfbb game
My (19) coworker (36ish) was saying he was watching SpongeBob with his kid and that he always loved the rock bottom episode the most

I just realized Spongebob uses a taxi to get to Rock Bottom in the game. Guess he learned from his mistake taking the bus.
Didn't know SpongeBob got his own racing game.
I do feel like the mystique of Rock Bottom is sort of lost when they brung it back, I had a similar issuse with PL-1413 (the SB-129 sequal).
Would be cool to see these one off buildings from video games integrated into the show :)
