The perfume department is one of my favorite jokes😂 I learned to walk home from school thru the mall, and between the perfume department and the makeup people, it was always my own personal escape movie type moment. Walking around the outside was too awkward, and walking through the store entrance was more straightforward. Not cutting through added 20ish minutes, so it was the best way. Perfume and makeup are still not a part of my life🤣 Good job advertising, guys!!!
I like how, unlike the inconsistencies with the Krusty Krab or with Squidward's house, any inconsistencies with the Dutchman's ship could be chalked up to it being an eldritch location. Something's different, or the layout doesn't make sense? Of course it doesn't, that's the Dutchman's will/the ship's will.
The perfume department felt so accuarate as a kid. Back then my asthma was pretty bad, so irl perfume departments felt as scary as it did to Spongy and Pat
I don't have asthma per se, but I wouldn't call my breathing great due to poor bloodflow As a grown ass man, I still feel like a victim of trench warfare walking through that department
Always felt like both the zipper of despair and the perfume department were temporary "extra-liminal" spaces the Dutchman conjured for them. Like a sort of comical set of bars on a jail cell so they'd be deterred from escaping. Great deep dive!
This is how I know Old SpongeBob (S1-4) is gold, because I’m just casually dying at the clips abt the old episodes without even fully paying attention, and I’m straight-faced every time a newer episode is talked abt.
5:50 SpongeBob and patrick have been shown to be able to be on dry land for short stints without complications, remember it took them a few minutes to catch on to the problem with not having water in the treedome.
I was thinking the same thing. Especially as well during the 1st Spongebob movie on the beach and in the store towards the end. As well as when they all went up to the land on the palm tree island with Sandy that one episode and all gave Squidward the look. 😳
What interesting is 5:10 this grid thing is a cargo hatch, the area beneath it is normally an area for cargo on old trading ships. But here it’s clearly been repurposed.
The story of the Flying Dutchman is really sad and dark.Imagine that one day you die and some guy comes up and says, "Hey guys.Let's use this body as a window display.''
7:36 I'm no ship expert but I think it's pretty clear they go out from the top here. I think from my movie knowledge ships often has this area under the deck where they store goods and prisoners.
I feel like the zipper of despair is something the Dutchman can do everywhere and is not bount to the ship. The perfume store might as well be above sea since Spongebob and Patrick are able to go into land for a bit before they dry out.
The funny Thing is besides The Flying Dutchman is a beloved character everyone SpongeBob Fan knows He is barely in the main Show compare to Larry Perla and other side characters.
It's worth noting that just being on land doesn't dry them out, they only dried out in the movie and some other episode when under intense sunlight. As even in the original movie we see them wandering around just fine after leaving the beach gift shop for several minutes before even sailing across the ocean. So it _could_ be a portal to the real world and them being there wasn't long enough to dry them out.
I hope you get to Sandy's Treedome soon as part of these deep dives. Well done on this one as always. Flying Dutchman's ship is so memorable, even though the character didnt make as many appearances as I thought.
These deep dives are the best SpongeBob content I loved the library one and garage. these topics that you don’t think about but have a bunch of lore built up over 14 seasons

The uppper floor of a ship is called a deck, or more specifically the upper deck. And that’s all ships not just pirate ships. Pirates use alot of weird words but the boat terminology is not among them oddly enough.
Counting anything from Shanghai’d is just setting yourself up for failure, as that episode leans so hard into surreal and absurd joke premises like the fly of despair and the perfume department, which absolutely should not be counted as anything other than vehicles for jokes
Them not drying out in the perfume store could also be because of how much perfume they're being sprayed with I like to think they're using the perfume to stay hydrated even though they hate it
It's funny and kind of sad how after Squiddy falls through the Fly of Despair It's implied he'd be safe and sound at home...until the knuckleheads wish for him back. The crew even said he'd be just fine- poor Squidward...
And like virtually every reoccurring locale in the SpongeBob series, is is much larger inside that it is outside, tho really, its "high up location being seen from the seafloor" perspective from the protagonists actually does give this location (also it's a "movable" dwelling too!) some leeway on what consistent size it would be, BÜŢ then again, SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy & the rest; their world seems to (especially at the start of the series & in the very recent years of the franchise as Awe here covers lately!) be so incredibly cartoony & toonforce-y, well yeah then there's the perpetual logic breaking water/air physics of the whole series, like underwater fire, most sea creatures "falling" with no "swimming" being a thing, blah blah, etc.... Oh and I guess @ 0:29 I didn't remember that scene of that early SpongeBob episode where the Flying Dutchman's body was used as a mannequin or something, that's surprisingly hilarious (on how it was showcased) yet dark!
There is a version of "Revenge of the Flying Dutchman" for the Gameboy advance. It is 2D, and the graphics are a lot more charming in my opinion. I wonder how the storylines match up between the games.

the myths and ghost stories about the legendary ship he's named after originated from the 17th-century Golden Age of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and of Dutch maritime power
idk why but these deep dives are like an art in themselves, thanks for creating these 4 dimensional museum pieces
The perfume department type gags (inserting real life images and video into a cartoon) are so funny to me and so Spongebob.
