You're an awesome shooter. Thanks for the comparison. When you find a firearm/airgun that just fits you well, discover the ammo/power combo it performs best with, stick with what works. Newer just doesn't mean better automatically.

Hi Simon . The Theoben guns were ahead of their day. Ben Taylor did a lot of work in the early days with FX, he designed the early smooth twist barrel, FX magazine were based on the rapid mags. I owned two mk2 fac guns over the years and yes there were tack drivers. Stupidity sold both as you do, the biggest down side was having to remove the bottle to fill it which meant a new O ring most of the time. All that said the Rapid is a great gun, if you can find one that hasn’t been ‘fiddled’ with buy it. Good stuff Simon.

Great video as ever. Got an old, 2nd hand Titan Manitou in 22 cal from before they turned into Falcon. Got it in about 98 and always stayed my go-to rabbit rifle. Slightly updated with a target style stock and one of those 3d type computer generated butt hooks, but all the same, a cracking rifle that never fails....sometimes simplicity over technology, the bare mechanics work so well, and a slight bit of homework and skill! Again, very good stuff, Simon. I think you may be right about the velocity-wind-resistance differences between the two. I hope you can retest them side-by-side on a calmer day, just for the halibut. Still, wind-resistance is part of the formula for accurate shooting, and if there is something about the .25 that makes it inherently less accurate than the .22, it'd be worth knowing. Give Jack a big "at-a-boy" from me, plus a doggy treat.

It's tough to accurately test outside with windy conditions, better to do that on an indoor range.
I would expect tighter grouping at 80 yards (75ish meters).
Pellet choice the most accurate for those rifle?
At the moment I have around 17 different types of pellets lying around.
I even noticed difference between batches of pellets, when ever I am almost out of them I buy 1 tin of JSB exact and test it, if it groups I take note of the batch number and buy 10 tins of them.
Some barrels want batch A and some want batch B so I always have a rifle that groups good with them.
And I am one of this people that takes a scale and weights the pellets if i want to test or shoot a competition at 100 meters.

Simon, I always enjoy your varminting videos and am very impressed by your shooting skill. I am an avid airgunner and I'm sure you know that the Hades pellet is not known to be particularly accurate beyond 50-60 yds. The JSB King 25.39gr and/or 33.95gr domed pellets are reportedly better at long ranges. I have a 65FPE .25 Gauntlet that actually shoots slugs very well. As I'm sure you know, the slugs have a much better BC that shoot flatter and drift much less in the wind. I've made kills beyond 150yds with this rifle shooting NSA 29gr HP slugs.

I used to own a .25 FAC Redwolf, it could not group the heavier 33.95g jsb but loved the lighter 25g jsb exact and it also shot alot of slugs well. I think if you had a well tuned .22 Redwolf against your Rapid then it would probably of faired better....but saying that, the Rapid is one hell of a rifle, still doing it after all these years.

Ye Paul i do agree with what you say just what kind of makes me laugh is that a 2019 standard Red wolf is highly tunned compared to that 1996 Rapid so even a standard state of the art Red wolf should really beat a standard 1996 Rapid but you are right.

    Hi Simon,
Thank you for your video involving these two super air rifles. My comment comes with great respect, as you, and most of your viewers will be more experienced than I am, seen and lived through more. That in mind, I'd like to raise just a couple of points here, please?
You have here, two fantastic air rifles manufactured by, in my eyes, both fantastic, able people. In terms of technology, yes, they're nearly thirty years apart.
However, would that thirty year timespan not just apply to the electronic technology?
Has technology in terms of barrels, rifling and pellets moved on that much? Personally, although ground breaking, I'm not keen on the idea of electronics in air rifles, as I'd rather stay away from batteries and charging. If you took the electronics element out, are the rifles that much different, regardless of being thirty years apart?
At this years Shooting Show 2024, I felt a tension inbetween the manufacturers and public. The public wanted new kit, new ideas, designs and mindsets.
We have now, springers as good as pcp's. Pcp's are putting pellet on pellet, and because some folk find this boring, are returning to springers as they want more of a challenge. I'm not sure. I'd be a manufacturer now?
I don't know now, where the manufacturers can go now, as I see our technology now, as good as it can get. Even though we have thirty years inbetween these two fantastic air rifles, was the scope of technology there to be vastly improved? Did we not have it then?
I just feel we have two teams of fantastic air rifle engineers here, genius in their craft, who did the best they could at the time, producing what they did.
Air rifle electronics and charging batteries beforehand doesn't appeal to me. However, the same air rifles are manufactured without electronics, so they'd be what I would be interested in personally.
I hope I've made sense here and not dug myself a hole. I just think in thirty years it's easy to think something should be better, though did we not have most of that technology then, anyway?
Is it not just the electronics that's new? Thank you, Ian.

Ye to be fair Ian accuracy wise not much has improved if you ask me just i think the rifles look a tad nicer in some cases and feel lighter if its a pcp may be now we get more shots but ye hitting the target no difference, but being honest its almost the same with the center fire rifle not much really has changed over the last 50 years i think.

I have Hades in 2. 25. and 30 cals. None of my guns shoot them as well as std JSB pellets, though all are quite good. To be honest though, I only shoot pellets much anymore in my AA S510 22. The others shoot slugs just as well, so I take advantage of them. The Rapid does very well, especially considering the wind there. I couldn't hear what you said- is the Rapid non regulated or regulated? I know the old rule has always been pellets at around 850-880 for best accuracy, but I get as good, or better accuracy shooting them at 940-970...............at 75 yards. Tried many combinations to see, and if anything, my groups might even be a bit tighter at the faster speeds. I did most of the testing before switching over to slugs. Great to see jack in this one. 🙂
BTW, my 25 is an FX DL, and it likes the 33.95 MK II's best of all pellets tried. Your Red Wolf is a nicer gun and it has the power to push them at meaningful speeds. Try them. You may find they are tack drivers for you as well.It stacks them on top of each other at 75 yards. Not everything new is better IMO.

Knowing your barrels twist rate is key for gun accuracy... to find the best pellet for your gun, try experimenting with different pellets, fire into something soft so as to be able to retrieve the pellets. Your looking for 3 things on the rifle grooving, if the grooves are in line on the head and skirt they are no good (not much spin)/ if the grooves on the head and skirt are way out of line with each other, no good (too much spin) / if the grooves are slightly off from being in line/ left or right of each other (depending on your guns rotational twist) then you may have found the perfect pellet for your particular gun. Pellet length can make a big difference/ try a shorter or longer length pellet. Hope this helps/ maybe make a video of it and share your findings. :) Enjoyed watching the vid .
