    I think the “I just met my brother the other day,” thing is more like “I just saw my brother the other day and he seemed fine.” Probably a translation/wording choice issue.

    • @Goldenkitten1
      @Goldenkitten1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +187

      This is 100% correct. Japanese is very hard to translate literally, it's why so many dubs are considered inferior to subs because they have to convey the same information, while matching mouth movements and tone. Which almost always results in what's being said being roughly in the ballpark of what's actually said in the original.

    • @guerrillavanilla
      @guerrillavanilla 3 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      The word "meet" (合う) is used to express seeing or "meeting with" people so yes this is true

    I love how John is concerned that he didn’t open the noodles for the rats! I was thinking exactly the same thing but am confident that a noodle cup is no match for 3 determined and hungry rats!

      Domesticated rats make the sweetest pets too. And they enjoy the same stuff we do. My last pet rat loved stealing my weed and eating it. Rats are one of the most misunderstood animals in the world so it's nice to see that John still had empathy for them.

    • @jenh101
      @jenh101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jakebiassa I completely agree. My first pet and the one I bonded with most in my whole childhood was the sweetest rat called badger (due to her striped head markings). It was like having the sweetest little tiny dog. She was the best. She used to come running when I called and sit on my shoulder. I loved that rat so much. I hate how misunderstood and demonised they are. Also the thing about your weed is hilarious:)

    The Tonako poem actually seems to be a reference to the real life "cursed poem" Tomino's Hell. Thats also what the capital letters in the tapes spelled out. Chilla's Art also made the Aka Manto game, right? It seems like they like Japanese folklore and ghost stories.

    The capital letters are spelling “Tomino’s” as in “Tomino’s Hell” (“Tomino no Jigoku”). It’s an old Japanese poem about Tomino’s descent to hell and is said to be cursed; that anyone who reads it out loud will die. It’s an urban legend, obviously, and you can find the poem, in Japanese and in English, online.

      @micksoma9529 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would benefit from glancing at other comments first, yours is far more informative than mine. I started to think that as soon as he mentioned the letters spelling out something and the first three were tom. With the theme being horror story telling and reference to other legends a constant in CA games. There are lots of Easter eggs in them that aren't key plot elements like this too. Honestly a good teaching tool to help preserve these stories.

    Just like to point out that in Asian belief (or superstitions), ghosts are drawn to ghost-storytellers as they are as curious as the livings, there is this one Japanese superstition that if you tell 100 ghost stories in the night, the final ghost story will be that of you own. There are other variation to this but listening to Masaki's recordings I can't help with the feeling that jumpscares are imminent

    Those subtitles on the tapes were insanely out of sync. I'm glad I could just listen to the tapes instead of being forced to follow the subtitles they were that horrible. I can't imagine trying to play this without understanding Japanese because it was playing the wrong subtitles at the wrong times, putting some things out of order, speeding through them randomly-- it was incredibly distracting. Errant mistranslated bits are understandable and manageable but being that poorly timed really messed with the game play here for any non-Japanese speaking players, I think.
    That being said, I did love the "Boss" coffee vending machine being changed to "Chief"

    Okay, maybe not their best creation yet, but still an enjoyable and functional horror mystery with some very memorable moments.
    Chilla's Art is particularly good at creating a sense of isolation and trespass with their environments, and there were a few moments where I found myself looking forward to hearing another spooky story but also scared of the setting and concerned the story might upset some "presence" there in the building. It was nice to discover it's possible to move away from the tape player without the audio totally fading out, but there's something about wanting to be close to the player itself, rather than exploring those disturbances.. like putting down anchor within sight of a lighthouse.
    The stories and their delivery were so charming. His excited announcement at the beginning of every show, and the "tick-tock, tick-tock" of the clock and then the "pee-po, pee-po" of the ambulance siren at 17:31, gave me so much joy. I really enjoyed how the stories gradually became more personal and less heartwarming until they're almost incomprehensible. I didn't know about the cursed poem and I love learning about folklore from other countries, so that's really cool - but I do wish that information was more present in the game or the credits. The English translation is confusing in a few spots and the subtitles are paced oddly during some of the tapes, but overall the translation is great and fully captures Masaki's tone while reading. I also enjoyed the sound design - but I agree the tapes are very loud once you've grown accustomed to the quiet everywhere else. Maybe that's intentional, or they get louder as you go?
    Those rats too! They'll just worship the ramen now, lol. It even brought their friend back from the dead!
    I think Toko is actually the character in their stories, but initially they're telling stories about "their cousin", when it's actually themselves - and as they tell more and more, they get more emotionally invested, until the player realizes they've been talking to an angry and restless ghost this whole time. This ghost tricked Masaki into reading the cursed poem aloud on the air and then killed him.. right? I still don't understand why but maybe that's in the other endings.
    Apologies for the length. Thank you for sharing this adventure with us tonight, John! It was the perfect end to my evening. Your commentary, as always, was *chef's kiss*, especially your incredulity when the game informed you about needing to find six other tapes. I felt that reaction in my soul, lol. Looking forward to whatever you've got coming up next.

    The caps text spells "TOMINO'S HELL", which is a japanese urban legend poem. Basically the same trope of "if you read it out loud (in japanese, not english), you will die" and it has been said to have happened to a few people in the past. The poem in the game is trying to be similar to Tominos hell but doesnt convey the meaning/story of it correctly, probably due to poor translation.
    Tominos Hell was written by a japanese professor and poet shortly after WW1, in which he supposedly lost his sister and/or father, capturing these harsh feelings of loss and war. If youre interested in looking it up for yourself, you will notice some similarities to the "Darkness of Tonako" poem, like the first line and other references.
    I strongly recommend looking it up on kowabana, since they provide IMO the best translation and a very good interpretation and explanation.

    I speak a little Japanese. I can’t quite make out the voice at the end of the tapes saying “4 out of 7,” for example. Its distorted low in pitch, so I can’t confirm or deny what the voice is saying. I played this game myself a little while ago. It’s got a lot of charm and some interesting ideas, but there’s too little direction in figuring out what to do next. Overall, though, I’d recommend it to hard core horror game fans and fans of Asian horror in general.
