The CRAZIEST CONTROVERSY in East Carolina HISTORY

  • During the 2002 college football season, the East Carolina Pirates played the Cincinnati Bearcats in a nationally televised game on the ESPN family of networks. However, the game caused such an uproar that high schools all across the state started banning ECU from coming to them and recruiting their student-athletes. This is the crazy story behind East Carolina's feud with, quite literally, the entire state of North Carolina, and the NCHSAA

Grew up in Eastern NC. Played FB. C/O 2003. I know exactly what this story is without watching the whole video. ENC is a bigger high school football hotbed than you’d think. It’s very literally the only thing going on Friday nights. Sellouts were common. If WRAL in Raleigh sent its helicopter to the game for its highlight show, it would be standing-room only. This was a BFD. But I get why ECU wanted that. They were unusual in that their games only ever aired on a local NBC affiliate.

TBH- 90% of the high schools in the state are not playing at point in the season so seeing a local college playing isn't the worse thing in the world. Now if a HS playoff game was scheduled to be played at ECU for some reason & they kicking them out to play a fairly meaningless college game, then the NC High School association could be upset.

Glad these coaches care more about their power trip than their kids’ futures. ECU has helped A LOT of kids down east to develop as players and young men, and Steve Logan was a fantastic mentor to many student athletes (this concept actually existed at the time) in the area.
Thanks in part to these idiots and their egos, power trips, and lack of perspective, Logan was shown the door and the ghastly John Thompson era began. I hope these hs coaches, glorified gym teachers, are proud of themselves for destroying a program that all of eastern NC could be proud of in the name of their petty tantrum. Nice legacy.

    • @DolFan316

In the book “Sole Influence” Dan Wetzel and Don Yaeger said ACC Men’s Basketball coaches had a handshake agreement to not recruit from the controversial Mt Zion Christian Academy in Durham, NC. The book came out a few years after Mt Zion’s most known player, Tracy McGrady, turned pro right out of the high school.

  • @christopherwebb3517

I don't understand the controversy here. Nobody cares to watch a high school playoff game unless it's their kid's school playing. And nobody's going out of their way to watch the worst ECU team in a decade play their last game of the season unless they happen to be hardcore ECU fans. So what's the overlap of those two groups? I tried to mitigate this situation the best I could. As I am ECU alumni, and Chuck Knox ( Assistant AD of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association) worked out with me in a gym in Chapel Hill, we discussed this with a lot of emotion. They blamed ECU for scheduling the game. I blamed ESPN. I thought my comments had merit. Charlie Adams ( North Carolina High School Athletic Association AD) is ECU alumni, standout basketball player and a member of the North Carolina Hall of Fame. I was stunned by what they did. If UNC scheduled a Friday night basketball game on ESPN, no one would say anything.

It’s about the recruiting aspect of the playoffs. That’s when the best players are on the same field at the same time. In a time before social media those every College in the state would be represented at these late round games. That’s the kids best opportunity to be seen in a time before social media.
While ECU had a bad year, at the time they were one of the 3 big name football programs in the state. So yeah it’s a big deal when your local D1 team doesn’t show up for a playoff game, it’s tells the recruits you aren’t interested 🤷🏻‍♂️ Obviously things have changed 20 years later

The argument was ridiculous on a number of levels. The head of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association was Charlie Adams, who is in the East Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame.
The Friday night game vs Cincinnati.....as TV games are now.....was dictated by Conference USA contract with ESPN.
Also, it was the first Friday of December so it was deep in the playoffs AND even if it wasn't as many folks have said it likely wouldn't have impacted attendance significantly anyway.
Rest assured, if it was North Carolina, NOTHING like that would have happened.

UNC and NC State (whose graduates hold 90% of the non-governmental power in the state) don't like the fact that ECU exist. It dates back to the... contentious... foundation of ECU's medical school.
Relations between the 3 schools were so bad at one point that on the Athletics side, the NC Legislature passed a bill where UNC and NC State must play ECU at least once a decade.

With the Bearcats win over ECU in this game they became co CUSA champions with TCU. Cincy beat TCU head to head that season so Cincinnati basically were the conference champions by themselves. Despite this TCU got the Liberty Bowl bid that went to the champion and Cincinnati was relegated to the lowly New Orleans Bowl.

Before this game, ECU had its games on WITN (Inner Banks' NBC affiliate) and its game at West Virginia on ESPN Plus (original BIG EAST syndication; not to be confused with streamer ESPN+). FOX Sports Net Florida (now Bally Sports Florida) aired its home game vs. my USF Bulls here in Florida. The way the C-USA TV deal was structured, I can see why ECU wanted to be on ESPN in that case. It hadn't been on national TV all season and needed the TV revenue. Thank goodness the college football TV landscape is so much different over 2 decades later so this wouldn't be an issue today. All FBS members get some linear TV exposure in the current climate and that's a great thing.

I hope it was, because if they hadn't, it's a possibility that the NCAA would have gotten involved, effectively telling the NCHSAA that if they didn't let ECU recruit from their schools again, then they would recommend that all of its member universities not recruit from the state of North Carolina. Sadly, and the reality of it... NCHSAA way overblown this. Listen, if anyone is planning on going to the state playoffs games... they are going.. local college game or not. and sadly, with ECU playing that badly, it may have actually chased more to the playoffs anyway.. not to mention.. I if I want to watch both... well, the ESPN game can be recorded on VCR or now DVR.. I laugh that the HS games got weathered out meaning if they didn't move the game, it would have interferred more... and by banning the recruiting.. they are hurting the players more than the school... they'll just go out of state for their recruiting. How many players might miss a chance for college football because of that. Players, that were sitting home on that day because their teams were already eliminated.
