Well, the 1981 NFL season was a trainwreck and a half for the New England Patriots. And during week 15, in a game against the Buffalo Bills, thanks to a man named Michael Stein, it was about to get even worse

I was born in 1980. I’m a Steelers fan but I remember 1990, I felt bad for the Patriots back then. They were 1-15. They had some no name head coach, playing in “New England” and nobody here in Iowa seemed to care about them at all. They lost the Super Bowl 5 years earlier 46-10, didn’t have a chance against the 1985 Bears. They couldn’t even get a state or city to agree to put their name on the team. It just felt like they were such a lost cause of a franchise, destined to always be a doormat. Then they got Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe and they took off after that.

Jesus 1981 was such a disaster. This team was so bad they were the only team who lost to the Colts that year. And mind you not only did that Colts team go 2-14 but they did this with not only one of the worst offenses of all time but the abosoulte WORST defense in NFL history (in terms of points surrendered which is 533. Also had giving up the most yards in NFL histroy prior to the 2012 Saints)

This is very similar to what happened in 2000 during Leeds United's Champions League match vs Barcelona. For some context, it had only been a couple years since fully alcoholic beer was allowed to be sold at soccer grounds in England again since from 1989-1998 you could only get the non alcoholic variety. There was even a period from 1986-1989 where alcohol was totally banned from all sports stadiums in the UK. This was in response to the Heysel disaster of 1985 (where 39 Juventus fans were killed thanks to drunk Liverpool fans charging at them which caused a wall to collapse). In order for stadiums to sell alcohol, the Premier League, the EFL & the English FA ordered all clubs across England at all levels to have clear, well defined policies in place to sell it. In the case of Leeds their policy was similar to Shafer Stadium's in that all beer sales would end 15 minutes after halftime. However like in the video the concession stands were still selling beer after the closing time & it wasn't just one stand that was open it was 3. This was because the stadium staff foolishly thought that the beer policy only applied to Premier League or FA Cup matches & not the Champions League & wanted to make some extra money. To make this even more crazy, no one bothered to shut down these concession stands. Remarkably nothing bad happened mainly because the police were already prepared for any kind of trouble given Leeds United's reputation for hooliganism in the past.
After UEFA heard about this they came down hard, fining Leeds 250,000 euros, banning them from selling alcohol at home Champions League matches & limiting the amount of away fans they could have at away Champions League matches to 1500. In addition the English FA banned Leeds from selling alcohol for 2 years and they had to apply to the FA once the ban ended to have beer sold again unless they chose to sell the non alcoholic version. Leeds ultimately decided to switch to the non alcoholic variety on a permanent basis to make the atmosphere more family friendly.

i was once at a football game where i was in the process of buying a beer when beer sales ended. by this i mean i had already paid, but the beer hadnt been poured. the tap was remotely shut off and non functional and no one could do anything about it.
to make matters even more fun, they couldnt give me a refund because the computer system wasnt programmed to do that because obviously returns and exchanges on soda and nachos isnt a thing.

Simple: they were abysmal in 1 score games, like the 89 bengals and 2019 chargers. But that's not even the worst part. The patriots got swept by the Colts, who also finished 2-14. Baltimore had the worst defense in league history, which still holds the record for tds and points allowed in 1 season. The pats were the only team to lose to those colts. But it gave them the first overall pick? Yeah, they blew it. Kenneth Sims was a first round bust. At least your 2nd round pick andre tippett was a hall of famer

Considering the climax was no one gets beer, it's goid that the story ends there.
I thought the story was going to take a much deeper darker turn.
I thought the announcement was just pulled on the day as Patriots fans came in and found out at the venue there was no beer. And then there'd be a fan riot who'd storm the field.
A sober angry swarm is much worse than a drink swarm. If they were sober, the crowd could coordinate and can actually use their shear numbers to overcome the police.
If they were told in advance of the beer ban (which I assume they were) they just saved themselves a riot. If you just found out that day at the venue, by preventing a drunk mob, you create a righteously indignant sober mob.
