LADONIA and NIMIS | Sweden's Controversal Micronation

  • In this video I visit the micronation of Ladonia in the south-west of Sweden. It was founded by now deceased artist Lars Vilks, and - just like Vilks himself - Ladonia turned out to be quite a controversial micronation.

Lars Vilks is famous for having created the illegal driftwood sculpture Nimis, an illegal stone sculpture called Arx, and lots of other famous (or infamous) pieces of art. Nimis went undetected for two years, but once it was discovered, the local municipality demanded that it should be removed. That turned into a decades long legal battle that actually never got resolved. Lars Vilks eventually got tired of the legal proceedings and declared the area around Nimis and Arx an independent nation called Ladonia.
Visiting Nimis is an amazing experience, and this video gives you instructions on how to visit the area in case you want to travel to Ladonia yourself. Be warned that it's not maintained though - so entering the sculpture and the area itself is on your own risk. But it's definitely worth it.
Aside from Ladonia and Nimis, this video also discusses the artist Lars Vilks and his many other controversies, that eventually led to him being targeted for assassination. This, and a lot more, is covered in this fascinating tale of a strange place, founded by a strange man.

Really liking these vids of some lesser known attractions/places in the country. I love seeing different towns and cities different to the main bigger cities. When I was in Sweden I only had time to do Stockholm, Sigtuna.

Those two are good towns to cover though! But yeah there's certainly a lot of interesting and/or cozy places all over the country 😊

Ladonia not recognising Sweden made me laugh :D that's good humour, and their multitude of officials, like the minister for beer etc, reminded me of the many home and hearth Gods that the ancient romans used to have. What a fascinating place!

Hmm.... I wonder if he "imported" some of the driftwood, because it's truly an impressive amount. Or perhaps the Swedish navy had some major losses there back in the day? 😀
3:57 - Incredible, that sign on the left is even in Danish. I've only seen that on restaurant menus in Southern Europe. 😃

Love it. This is actually the perfect type of modern art to me, ie the ones that put a spotlight on the bizarre world we live in by involving authorities, bureaucracy and “nations”.

There is a passage in the bible that says, 'everything is permissible to me, but not everything is beneficial to me'. I think Vilks could have benefited from taking that saying to heart.
As an example, it is legal to burn a flag in some countries, but why do it? I don't feel my freedom is curtailed by honouring someone else's sensibilities.
I would say Vilks was a vulgar man that needlessly insulted others, but I would also say that those who harmed or threatened him, were far, far worse.

    • @ThreeStarVagabond
      @ThreeStarVagabond  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

That's actually a pretty fair and reasonable way of looking at it. It's like the old saying that intelligence is knowing what you're allowed to do, but wisdom is knowing whether or not it's a good idea. Paraphrasing a bit.

Tack Miro for another very interesting video.
🤔 interactive art - very interesting, but it looks an absolute health and safety nightmare.
However is art that everyone can enjoy, and experience - literally walking amongst it - and the artist? Everybody loves an eccentric 😊

Oh it's absolutely a hazard, with rotten boards and rusty nails all over the place! But people like it - and it's understood that kids have to play carefully when there. I like that kind of...at your own risk spots 😅

What a strange little place. (They need someone along the trail administering tetanus shots! 🤣 ) Micronations fascinate me, and I'll have to go seek out the list of all the nation's ministry positions!

Haha, any plans for which Minister post to get? Minister of Excellent Writing? Ooh, or something that would appeal to most writers: Minister of Underappreciated Writing?

Ladonia is the first recycled micro nation LOL, as long as they don’t have micro beer I’m good with it. You have to be impresses with the construction especially with the terrain it’s on. Well declaring war on the USA and Sweden is crazy, they might have a change against the USA but never piss off a Swedish people you will definitely regret it. Great Video and stay safe till next time.

Hey, it is been a while Vagabond. I hope everything is going fine in your life. I was a bit ghosted from your comment section. But I watched your videos. I really liked the parts in the video when you were driving. Maybe we can make a Grand Tour of Sweden video series. That would be awesome. I will try to comment your old videos but it can take time. With my procrastination speed you may wait until next year :D Because I wished to make Top 10 Vagabonds of 2023 list in February 😅 But I couldnt. Forgive me pls. In Malmo you missed the sign of Sherlock Holmes Bar. Didnt you recognize the lamp. It was very suspicious. Probably it was a puzzle to enter the bar. ( or the owner went to find a new lamp 😄). But my Sherlock Holmes instincts were triggered there. Anyway the videos were awesome. Thank you so much. Only missing parts are Lund and Helsingborg. I am not sure do you have older videos about those cities. Bohuslan also very interesting but of course you are the captain. Till your next advanture take care and have a great day 🙂

Not Lund at all yet unfortunately :/ It's just so far off, and I didn't have time for that and Malmö on this trip :/
