    Just been watching your video for the first time, thoroughly enjoying it. I enjoy cab rides in train videos, it's even better when there is a commentary like the way you have done. Great job. I have subscribed. I live in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and there is Metro train system, i have a channel which i have filmed the Metro journey. Great job mate.

      Dale, I live in Peterlee in County Durham that's on the Durham Coast Line that runs between Newcastle and Middlesbrough, what's unique about the Tyne and Wear Metro is they share the track on the Durham Coast Line between Pelaw and Sunderland. Kim McGuinness, the new North East Mayor wants to run extend the Metro to serve Washington on part of the old Sunderland to Durham line, and the old Leamside Line.

    In the 60's - 80's I lived in one of those houses on the left after leaving Hounslow Central and in to the 70's you would still see 'lost' District Line trains presumably stopped where you mentioned.
    Never used to really hear the trains but when maintenance was done in the middle of the night that was really noisy! Luckily only one or two nights every few years. Missed the old red trains when they stopped running.
    We would sit in the garden and watch the planes coming in to land. At the time the house was in the middle of two landing flight paths so again the noise was minimal. Saw both Concorde and the Jumbo Jet’s first arrivals in to Heathrow.

    I’m new to your channel and find it simply fascinating … Back in the early 60s my Grandma lived around the corner from the Old Vic, and whenever we went to stay with her and would say I’m popping out to play. Little did they know I was running round to Waterloo station and jump on the Underground. If mum had known I’m sure she would have given me a good telling off… I spent hours travelling all over the place and jumped on and off at stations now no longer used. The underground has always fascinated me and I often wished I had been a driver. These days I can only watch videos like yours “or’” secrets of the London Underground. Now in my 70’s you have kind of made my dream come true. Thank you so much for sharing your trips, you’ve made me very happy 👍🍻

    If a signal turned red two seconds before a train running at 45 mph reached it, could it still be stopped before the obstruction?

    • @dalecharmantravels8057
      @dalecharmantravels8057  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      No. If a signal goes red in front of you there is every chance you will go through it and become tripped on the train stop. That’s where the air is released from the brakes brining them all on

    A 'useless' piece of info for you... traveling from Hatton X to T2&3 via T4, after leaving T4 the train heads all the way out to the western edge of the airport before heading back to T2&3. A while after leaving T4. If you watch carefully you will notice that the tunnel wall dissapears momentarily as the train it passes through a 'box'. This was apparently constructed for the station of the then proposed T5. T5 came many years later by which time the site had been moved further north.

My other favourite stock is the 1992 Stock, if you sit opposite the windows in the tunnels, or at night, the bend in the window makes it look like you have two heads.

    I caught one of these for the first time last night (probably because I’ve watched TH-cams from @tressteleg1 and @driver667 who are Australian train and tram drivers. Tressteleg1 does Melbourne and Sydney metro trains in the same way as these - no audio commentary though - plus Melbourne trams. Quite nostalgic for the Melbourne trips , having lived there till I retired in 2015. Driver667 does Victorian regional trains and Melbourne suburban trains. The train platforms in London seem quite a bit longer…probably just based on history, and it’d be expensive to buy the real estate to extend them.
    One feature of Melbourne transport was the number of level crossings - where the train line crosses the roadway, but the Vic government has removed a large number over the last ten years, either by raising or lowering the railway line.
    I enjoy this type of video. Will have to check the central London vids.

      The T4 trains run from Hatton Cross to T4 then round to T 2/3. So they have to change at Hatton Cross ( or before ) to get on a T4 train. As for T5 we advise people to change at Hatton Cross as it can be quicker than going via T4 to change at T2-3. I hope that makes sense. If you are able to look at the tube map on line I think it will make more sense

It's all the same with differing geographic names. Your video is highly informative and in 2010 I had the pleasure to ride that very line from Heathrow into the Center City. I also took the Jubilee Line north to St John's Wood to see The Beatles Abby Rd Studio. I noticed you did have some 4 track express service and your trains seem to run frequently. London has generally a cleaner system than New Yorks but New York has 24 hour service. 😳 How do working class people there get home after a night at the pub!! ??😂 ..😊..I enjoyed watching!!

    Watched a few of these cab ride videos over the years and something which still surprises me is how pitch black it is in the tunnels. Do the train headlights just not show on camera or is it really this dark? There are times when you can see absolutely nothing i.e. no track, tunnel walls...anything. Feels like you're almost driving blind at times.

    Here's a question - once you have stopped the train, what is to stop it moving while the doors are open? Do the brakes stay on? I know some stations have a bit of a gradient so I just wondered...

    It's probably worth mentioning that the Heathrow branch of the Piccadilly Line was never originally intended for Piccadilly Line trains. Instead District Line trains initially used it exclusively. The newly extended Piccadilly Line was originally planned to end at Northfields, hence the quadruple tracks to there from Acton Town, with just District line trains continuing to Hounslow West. In the event, Piccadilly Line trains started running to Hounslow West from March 1933. The District Line services to Hounslow West were gradually reduced in the 1950s and eventually the service ran during the peak hours only by the1960s. The last District Line services to Hounslow West ran 9th October 1964.
    Hounslow West station when first built, consisted of three terminal platforms at the rear of the station building and connected with staircases to the street level station building. The extension firstly to Hatton Cross, then later to Heathrow itself re-sited the platforms in a cut cover section immediately north of the terminal platforms. For this to come into use a new metal clad covered walkway came into use to serve the new platforms. Following this the tracks were removed from the three (now disused) terminal open-air platforms, which were then, together with the stairwells that served them, demolished but still retaining the street level station building. The area occupied by the old terminal platforms was then infilled in to form a station car park.

    I wonder if there's a way to give your gopro a fighting chance in low light conditions without also being a distraction. mini Infrared spotlight perhaps? Not sure what would actually work. As is its still very interesting - it's crazy how far you can see the next signal from in some of these long, straight tunnels, there's almost an illusion of it being much closer than it really is and it's like that monty python bit where sir lancelot is running towards that one castle.
    Very entertaining!

    A little tip, for when you arrive at Heathrow terminal 5, to terminate. Before releasing the doors, switch off the saloon lights, putting the train into darkness, so people know they have to leave the train. On the Tyne and Wear Metro, if a train reaches St. James, and is not returning round the coastal loop in service, but heading back ECS to Manors, to then go up the Manors ECS line to the depot, the drivers put the saloon lights out, before releasing the doors. Similarly, on Merseyrail, if a train is going out of service at Liverpool Central, and the train is heading back ECS to Kirkdale depot, the driver puts the lights out on the passenger accomodation, before the doors get opened. Just a little idea for you.

    • @dalecharmantravels8057
      @dalecharmantravels8057  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There has been proposals that when we terminate we then the lights in and off several times then depart with out checking. ( flash and dash) the unions rightly don’t like that as the last thing you want is some one getting taken in to the sidings for every ones safety. They also don’t like us turning lights off as passengers may panic or get injured if the can’t see.

    Where the train is just going to the siding and reversing, I don't really see the need to check that everyone got off. If you met someone while changing ends, you could just tell them that they better get off at the next stop. Yes, rules are rules, but I question the need for the rule.

    • @dalecharmantravels8057

      They use safety as a reason. Especially if it’s drunk customers.

    • @LUAu101
      @LUAu101 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are so many reasons for this. Access to sidings is typically, as at Heathrow, controlled by shunt signals and the routes involved are not guaranteed to be signalled to the gold standard required for passenger train movements. There have also been a number of serious incidents involving passengers staying on board. At Liverpool Street a man once realised his error in staying on board as the train went into the siding, attempted to use the interconnecting doors between the carriages to get off, slipped, fell and was killed. Then with the Olympics it was felt it would be a good idea to save time and get rid of this requirement. Then one day at Queen's Park a kid stayed on board as the train went into the North Shed, used the interconnecting doors to slip off the train and headed off up the tracks, after a ball I believe. Fortunately he was spotted by the driver. They tried preventing people from getting through the gaps between carriages by fitting barriers which massively impeded the evacuation of a Central line train when it started smoking during the Notting Hill Carnival. All of which leads of course onto the next point that frankly passengers want to get where they're going and do not want to be stuck up a tunnel not going anywhere for 20 minutes or so. And what if there's service disruption and the train really needs to stay where it is for an hour or two, or maybe even be left there over night? Only Sylvia's missed her stop. It's not really ideal. Now I'm sure you would be perfectly polite and understanding in that situation, even if you did have an interview to go to or an exam to take. Or a flight to catch ... But as dale says your average drunk on a Friday night, eh, not so much. Would you fancy being the driver trapped on a train up a siding and confronted with an big irate bruiser who wants to know when the **** this train is going to take him to the airport. There have been assaults in the past.
