Hello from Canada! I've seen a few of your videos now, and while I'm sure many an every day Londoner wouldn't understand, I appreciate you making them. I've been to the UK many times and some of my fondest memories of London are riding around on the tube. The sights and sounds in your videos bring me back, which is nice, as both of my grandfathers were born in the UK, so I see it as kind of a second home. I have a question if you know the answer and ever have time to answer it either in comment or video. Sorry if it's been answered already. I haven't come across it yet, and maybe it's obvious (not to me), but why do some trains spark with electricity underneath on the rails? The train at 6:35 for instance does it a bit. Your train must be doing it at 1:03:56 or so. Thanks!
Because we don’t stop at Turnham Green most of the day. They put the flashing lights up to remind the driver to stop. So on the lates that i do we stop after 2230

So probably a silly question. On the video the tunnel walls in the station look very close, is that the way it feels when driving? And which is better for watching passengers, mirror or cameras? I'm an exile from London, used to use tube & underground a lot back in the day.
The tunnel walls are very close to the trains at least in the old tunnel sections. I find mirrors better as you can see every thing and not just what the camera can see. Some times all you can see is the top of some ones head on a camera
How does the layout work at Finsbury Park? As when you head east or west you always meet the Victoria line on one track each. Is the east and west on different levels or spread out wide?
Hi Dale, when you are sat at the platform at Acton Town, under the platform monitor there is a sign underneath saying 'D Off'. I was just wondering what this means please. The videos are great keep them coming, all the best 👍
D off is for sleet operational trains. So some trains have de icing liquid and sleet brushes. So when it’s cold it will say D on and we would use the de icing equipment if it is fitted to the train
If your (for instance) in a 25mph section, I assume overspeed protection is triggered by lineside equipment and the train itself does not actively monitor speed with the view to intervention if overspeed is detected?
@@ElmtreeLine on the underground we don’t have line side equipment to stop speeding as such. In a handful of locations usually at the end of the line we have speed controlled train stops. There are also a handful of speed controlled signals. It’s just not the same as on the main line
Apologies if someone has already asked this but why are the lights on in the tunnel. I've noticed in NYC subway videos most of the tunnels have the lights on as well.
As a rule we don’t have lights on in the tunnel during normal traffic hours. They usually come on when the power is turned off. However they can be turned on for track searches. Or due to a fault
HI Dale, I just wanted to ask and it may be a daft question. are the trains you drive manual where you have to do power up and down etc and braking by yourself as I was watching another video the other day and the driver did not really drive it was auto start and stop ( brake ) all they did was open and close the doors ? and also when you open the doors, what would happen if the wrong side buttons were pushed by mistake ? I.E Platform on the left and you push the buttons for the right side, Would the train prevent this from happening ? and or what would happen to a driver ?
Hey thanks for the questions. So on the pic line we do drive manually. As for the doors we do have a system called CSDE. Correct side door enabler. It stops us from opening on the wrong side or place. It can be over ridden. There is a procedure to follow should for some reason the doors open in the wrong place or side.
I think Leicester used to have a draw-up signal because its so close to Covent Garden and if a train was stopped at CG you had to enter LS slowly. Are there any draw-ups elsewhere on the Piccadilly?
There is a speed control train stop about 3/4 of the way down the platform at Leicester sq e/b for that reason. Arnos w/b has a draw up and one at T5. I’m sure there are more but can’t thing off the top of my head
I wonder how many years the telephone system will be removed before they remove the red signs with a crossed out T? I agree that smoother train handling comes from not rushing up to a stop and then taking off again.
Hi Dale - another question from me . . . is it true that empty stock moves once took place for Piccadilly Line trains around the Circle Line? I think the sole purpose of such a move was to ‘flip’ driver cabs; so if you’re on the EB Local at Barons Court you’d arrive back on the WB Local after the manoeuvre without changing ends. I think the new ATO system on the Circle Line means that can no longer happen - of indeed it ever did(?).
@@dalecharmantravels8057 to be honest neither can I - how unless it’s to even out wear & tear on the inner wheels. It’s a a strange one but I definitely heard it from a good authority. Just can’t remember who!

How does the layout work at Finsbury Park? As when you head east or west you always meet the Victoria line on one track each. Is the east and west on different levels or spread out wide?
Great video!
Thank you
Great vlog keep it up
Thank you
Enjoyed that, thank you.
You are most welcome
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Thanks for the quick reply - hope you like the new trains - look good 👍
HI Dale, I just wanted to ask and it may be a daft question. are the trains you drive manual where you have to do power up and down etc and braking by yourself as I was watching another video the other day and the driver did not really drive it was auto start and stop ( brake ) all they did was open and close the doors ? and also when you open the doors, what would happen if the wrong side buttons were pushed by mistake ? I.E Platform on the left and you push the buttons for the right side, Would the train prevent this from happening ? and or what would happen to a driver ?
Hey thanks for the questions. So on the pic line we do drive manually. As for the doors we do have a system called CSDE. Correct side door enabler. It stops us from opening on the wrong side or place. It can be over ridden. There is a procedure to follow should for some reason the doors open in the wrong place or side.
Thats a fair drive to work every day
Why are the tunnel lights sometimes switched on in passenger service?
They can be switched on for things like track searches. How ever the most common reason is it’s a fault and they won’t switch off
I think Leicester used to have a draw-up signal because its so close to Covent Garden and if a train was stopped at CG you had to enter LS slowly.
It’s interesting to know that most of your working shift day is not only spent travelling to and from work but also driving the trains for 8 hours👍
41:10 You can see the power rails have been lifted from the Aldwych branch.
Question does it get redundant doing the same line day in day out up n down does it seem like Groundhog Day
It’s like every job some days you just think it’s the same thing over and over again. Other days you don’t mind it
Hi Dale - another question from me . . . is it true that empty stock moves once took place for Piccadilly Line trains around the Circle Line? I think the sole purpose of such a move was to ‘flip’ driver cabs; so if you’re on the EB Local at Barons Court you’d arrive back on the WB Local after the manoeuvre without changing ends. I think the new ATO system on the Circle Line means that can no longer happen - of indeed it ever did(?).
I have never heard that. Going around the T4 loop would turn the cabs around however I don’t know of any reason why we would need to do that.
@@dalecharmantravels8057 to be honest neither can I - how unless it’s to even out wear & tear on the inner wheels. It’s a a strange one but I definitely heard it from a good authority. Just can’t remember who!
@@FrangoTV1 I will try and make some enquiries to see if any one knows
@@dalecharmantravels8057 I might be harking back to the distant days when Hatton Cross was the terminus of the ‘Hounslow’ branch when I was riding the tube as a carefree teenager - then it was extended to Heathrow Central to great fanfare. Those movements might date from then when the 73 stock was a relative newcomer.
Thanks for your responses Dale. 😊
