      It's the best-looking M3 ever made IMO. It's also the most criminally underrated M car ever. Yes, the very first models were very spiky on a damp road, but the Competition and especially the CS version made it so much more tied down, and frankly, better. It's a better all-around car than the E90 M3 IMO, and the M4 GTS... One of the best M cars in a decade.

    A man who can really drive properly, and who has driven pretty much every car worth driving loves the car and enjoys it...but internet race drivers (most of them without a drivers licence of course) call it bad and point out all kinds of negatives about it (without ever coming close to the actual car of course)...how hilarious.

      fuckoffgoogle He usually breaks his videos in 3 parts: Normal street driving, circuit time attack, then drifting (covering all driving bases). People who buy these cars may not drift them everywhere, but they like the fact their car is capable of doing it. Make sense? Plus Chris Harris actually has professional racing experience he can do it all

    • @BFD15i
      @BFD15i 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      fuckoffgoogle You did see the first part of the video where Chris drives the M3 on open roads?
      All in all, you don't burn / waste more rubber on a M3 than on an AWD-car with that amount of power. Yeah, the rear tires get it hard. On an AWD-car you burn the rear tires less but you burn your front tires, too.
      Not a real comparison but I had an E39 M5 a couple of years ago. Not turbocharged but very capable of drifting. And you know what? If you don't go nuts the tires were not an issue at all.
      BUT: If you want to go nuts from time to time and still want to have daily-use-capabilities, there's no better car than an RWD M-car.

  • @derbigpr500
    @derbigpr500 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Why do people whine so much about the sound? It's a very good sounding car by any standard. I dare you to drive it and say "it sounds bad". Also...why does nobody on the internet (it doesn't matter, those people can't and won't buy it anyway) realize the point of this car? This is not a track car, or a race car. This is sporty luxury saloon car. This M3, and the current generation of the M5, are EXACTLY what these cars are all about. A combination of a luxury car that can be used every day, for every possible imaginable purpose, that looks tasteful but aggressive enough, that has a comfortable and luxurious interior, but can also be a sports car, that can be driven hard fun on THE ROAD (where 99% of these cars will spend 99% of their time) and driven very quickly on THE ROAD while remaining civilized. This is not a track car. Do you people realize the difference between a race track and a road? Do you realize how much different the setup of a car has to be in order to extract everything out of it on a track? Cars are set up for roads that have bumps, camber changes, surface changes, elevation changes, etc. Not for smooth tracks with a perfect surface and dry tarmac. The point of this car is to be comfortable, refined, luxurious AND sporty at the same time, and that requiers certain sacrifices. You have to get the balance right, and BMW did it. If the car was any softer overall, it would be too soft and too close to the regular 3 series. If it was any harder, it would be too uncomfortable on the road.
    If you want a track car, but a Cayman S, not a 4 door family sedan. There's no point in taking a family sedan and turning it into a hardcore stripped out race car, it's very inefficient and franky a waste of time.

    Pleasure over performance any day. And... it doesn't lack performance, maybe by the new one standards, ok fine but I know what my choice would be. V8 for life ;-)

    I know a turbo M3 is odd but why not! BMW always stayed away from turbocharging because back then NA motors were much smoother to drive, the old straight 6 motors were lovely & do sound great. These twin turbo setups have come a long way & appear pretty fine tuned compared to your average old school high pressure single turbo whop in the guts/wheels. As long as the motor retains its driveability but is making more power im all for it, IMHO this is still in the "M" spirit.
    The lack of tuneful NA sounds is a bit of a blow, I think this has always been a large part of the M3 although I personally also like the different character a turbo gives to an engine.
    On the plus side, some simple bolt on mods & mild tuning would likely turn it into a pretty raucous thing.

    It only has one major problem. And it goes by the name CTS-V. Supercharged LT-4 making somewhere around 650bhp and the only trannsmission faster than the PDK is going to be tough to beat. Can't wait for you to review that car. Maybe even a head to head?
    Would like to see ATS-V Coupe versus M4, CTS-V Sedan versus M3

    Chris Harris on Cars Chris, you mentioned that there is a "technical stuff" video about the M3 tech, where is this video? I couldn't find it on your channel.
    Great review as usual, by the way.
    And I'm not sure why people still moan about manual gearboxes in 2014. These gearboxes are awesome, especially this DCT. I for one prefer a dual clutch over a manual any day.
    I also prefer this 4 door M3 sedan this time round. I think it's better looking than the 3 door M4 coupe, unlike the previous generation where the 3 door M3 coupe was better looking than the 4 door sedan M3. All my opinions, obviously.

    • @Beolex
      @Beolex 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First of all, DCT is completely unnecessary if you aren't already a professional driver. DCT buys you faster shift times, but it doesn't buy you track skill. The only thing that gives you track skill is first-hand experience, such as learning cornering, throttle control, left-foot braking, taming oversteer but minimizing understeer. Race car drivers already mastered racing etiquette, so their lap times are consistent. If they want to improve their already-consistent lap times, that's where the technical things come into play, such as quick gearboxes (whether single or dual clutch), tires, camber and suspension geometry.
      However, on the street, the DCT gearbox is completely useless. Most of the F30/F80 M3/M4 buyers are only marginally better than the average driver (if not the same or worse). Without a doubt, plenty M3/M4 owners are going to autocross or track their car, but they're going to perform so poorly (compared to experienced racers) that the DCT gearbox didn't help them, they actually needed track skills more than faster shift times. Once you're able to get record-setting, consistent lap times with a manual car, then you have a legitimate reason to desire a DCT.
      Second of all, people who opt for the DCT gearbox claim "its faster on the track" and its "racing technology"... but if you wanted a "fast race car" why are you buying a 3,500 lb. car with heated leather seats and Bluetooth controls? If you want to be a racer, at least do it right and get something that weighs less than 3,000 lbs. such as a Porsche 911 .
      The only advantage of DCT on the street is that you can beat your friends in a drag race. But drag races on the street are stupid because the next traffic light is going to turn red and you're going to end up right next to him.

      Daniel Mirzotti Porsche 911...that has all those things you listed, one wouldn't want in a race car. But remember the point of ///M cars, good on track, good on the road and can take the family in. Good luck with that in your GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 or GT2 RS...

      Which 911 are you talking about? I'm referring to 911's like 996 GT3, 964 RS America, 993 C2, etc. Very trackable cars. I've personally got a 87 3.2 Carrera and I autocross it regularly, great track car. Stripped out, bucket seats with 4-point harness, lightweight, handles well, has good tires on it, and good suspension too.

      Daniel Mirzotti I LOVED the tea-tray's on the old 911 Turbos. But yeah, the M3 and M5 have always been able on track, like the 911 but with added ability of hauling 4 people and some luggage. I'm not saying I don't like the 911, I'd have one if I could but I would also have an M car to use when I need the space.

    • @TheArfdog
      @TheArfdog 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Daniel Mirzotti And you think you're a "racer" because you drive a 911, which is still a road car? You're a fool. And since you're so high and mighty, know that real racers drive race cars, not road cars. The new M3 is the best in years, DCT or not.

    The thing I never hear on youtube about cars is why manufacturers make a car a certain way. With previous M3's the only way to get cheap good power was to turbocharge, which is what alot of car guys did. Now the new one is factory turbo making it easier to modify. Nissan built the rb26 strong so it could be modified easily same as the Toyota with the 2jz. The 86 was made to be fully worked thus within a couple of years it laps Tsukuba circuit in 58odd seconds, the Mines gtr was 57.
    The ultimate test of a car is on track stock and modified for the price.

    The first M3 in a long time to have an "ordinary" engine. I think that's a problem. The m3 six's in the 90s and early 00s were as well thought of as any engine on sale, and the last v8 was spectacular, although sadly it was in a heavy car.
    Shame in my book - the hint of exotic was the whole point. Now it's just a fast saloon. Competency is trumped by occasion every time.

    • @Krnnerdboy
      @Krnnerdboy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      What's so ordinary about a 430 hp i6? With a lot of tuning potential to boot? Got back from track in my m3 and this thing turns better than any m3 before it not to mention a great useable torque curve.
      And what's so special about a motor that's a v8 with no torque and internal design flaws(rod bearings/crankshaft), But revs to the moon and sounds great? Yet BMW has never used the s85 or s65 in any type of competitive motorsports? Nothing exotic about that....

    • @Malc180s
      @Malc180s 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      roy kwon You're clearly the sort of person who doesn't understand. Fine.
      The only thing history will judge an engine on is sound and feel. The power, the torque, that WILL be bettered with the next model, and the next, and the next. The e46 and e92 engines are as good as it will EVER get for BMW. They were as good an engine as was available at their respective times - you could have reasonably argued that the e46 '6 was better than ANY other engine on sale in 2000. You can't do that with the new car. It's not even slightly close.
      It's not about performance - performance is dictated by marketing. "It must be a bit faster, but not so fast as we can't release a new one in a few years". BMW could have made this current 6 with 800bhp - that's not beyond the realms of current technology. But a 340bhp, 3.2 6 from 15 years ago? Sure, there's always a bit of a safety margin, but with that you were buying the best BMW could make.

    • @CJM44.41
      @CJM44.41 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      roy kwon What are you on about? The S85B50 came out of the F1 programme at the very end of the V10 era. The S65B40 has been in use in the United Sports Car Series (ALMS before it was called the USCS) for several years now as well. Not like the new S55 is used in motorsport at all... They're still using a bespoke V8 in the DTM M4.
      Face it, the previous E9x M3 was far more of an event to drive because of its engine and having to rev it out to extract that brilliantly entertaining performance. I personally thought the steering was excellent in the E90 I drove too. Sure, its heavier than its successor and ultimately not as capable but is that all cars have become nowadays? Not saying the F8x M3/4 isn't a hoot to drive but I simply don't think the character and exclusivity of the previous car is there anymore.

    • @Krnnerdboy
      @Krnnerdboy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I get it, and there maybe some lost in translation here. I've never considered Bmw to be the ultimate drivers car and could really care less with how much they're involved with motor sports as long as they continue to make fast cars. If you want a car that makes every drive an event then go look at Porsche. I buy bmws for daily drivability and with the option to track when wanted. The chassis is an 3 series for gods sake. It's not a real sports car and never will be. Get on with it.
      I've blown my s54 on track and had an s85 with a bad oil analysis from bad rod bearings. The clearances were too tight and not enough lubrication was available. The only way to fix the issue was too machine the crank and get new bearings. And that's the case for every s54,s65,s85 ever made. Your mileage may vary but that was 2 for 2 for me. Apparently Bmw knew this issue and changed to a flat plane crank on their race blocks among other benefits.
      So yes, I'd much rather have a sporty motor than a half assed race "derived" motor that they have been marketing to us all this time. Besides the f80 chassis is a notch above an e46 or e90 in handling. Luckily for you guys the e46 and e90 cars are selling for a song and are in no short supply. So enjoy them if that's how you truly feel. I put my money where my mouth is

    • @Malc180s
      @Malc180s 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      roy kwon Approach with low expectations and I guess you'll be satisfied with any old rubbish.
      The whole entire point of the m3 was to have your everyday 3 series, but with one of the finest, most exciting engines you could buy under the bonnet. All performance engines wear. You just bought a 330i (or 335i these days) if you wanted the fast, easy option. If you wanted the exciting, slightly exotic option which would of course require maintenance and would have higher running costs, you bought the m.
      The new m3/4 is just a run of the mill bmw. Fun for the 10 minutes a week you actually find time to drive it fast. An e46 was fun reversing off the driveway.
