Thank you for this value packed video, Sara! I quit my job a year ago to focus full time on my business selling my artwork and photography with printful as my printer. Really happy with them so far!
What strikes me is that only 4% of her subs watched it. Probably more like 2-3% actually, the rest being non-subscribers like yours truly. And no public content since?
In a world of 10 second content I feel like there is something so comforting about seeing a video with a run time over 40 minutes. Or maybe that's just me haha..... Love your work as always!
Truly felt this video was 100% yourself. Definitely feel you reached a threshold in which you have to share your experience on this TH-cam journey, missed this side of your videos. I have to say this was very informative video. This is definitely one of your best videos for people wanting to create a Lifestyle brand on TH-cam or any other Social media source. Looking forward to hearing more about your conclusions about this journey. Congrats on this video. Part 2 ?
Absolutely amazing video. Didn’t even realize how long this video was until the end. Amazing work and great dedication Sara, reasons why you’re one of my favorite overall TH-camrs.
I’m not a new TH-camr anymore, I don’t normally watch videos like this, but you said many things in here that I needed to hear right at this exact moment… thank you! ❤
Thank you for making this instead of tech because you didn't feel like it. We respect what you're going through. The first time I sat through a sponsor read. I'm signing up.
I feel like I reached absolute FULL success the moment I reached over $100k revenue in my third year of freelance after many years of planning and having the fear to go for it. Despite my evil conscience, this success continues. The “Elon Musk Mindset” she mentioned is such a wild goal mindset that I was not made for (and most of everyone else who has the capacity for anxiety). I’m still not sure if I even want to ever pursue a YT channel, but this is beyond enough. You can do it freelance creator dreamers!
this was super enlightening. i've been thinking of starting my own photography/filmmaking channel for years now and this was a great watch. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this topic - you're entertaining but also passionate about this subject and it's wonderful to learn from you.
Lots of useful takeaways here, thanks for sharing all of this When you're talking about the negative side of collaborating with brands as business partners, would you include your experience with Moment? Or were they a good partner, and it's just that physical products tend to be infinitely difficult?
About 30 minutes in I was like 'damn Sara is kinda goin' off' then realised I had it on 1.25x speed... Such a helpful video and would love if you made more like this. Can totally relate to that 'North Star' conundrum.
Oh man this video speaks to me, especially this part right here 31:36 , "you can just be a youtuber" whew I needed that reminder, I get shiny object syndrome especially since everyone online says the best way to survive as a creator is to start a business
This is the type of video that's needed these days. Any kid that tells me they want to do youtube will receive a link to this video. Give us the rest in another video. 😊 Thank you Sara!❤
This was so insightful and has given me so much to think about. I’ve watched a lot of videos with similar titles and no one is saying the things you are saying! I would LOVE more videos like this. I loved the length too!
That studio setup business is a great idea ! I have a treehouse I can record videos in (technically its like a bedroom sized house on stilts) and cause of the size I have to setup and take down the equipment all the time, its just so much work that I have to do before even shooting the video, it can take 10, 15 or even 20 mins, which puts me off making videos, on top of that I have an issue at the moment with motivation. Obviously I have to work on the motivation thing, but if I had someone do the setup for me it would help ALOT. I would love to get to a point that I could even have just a room to leave my equipment setup in already so I could just sit, shoot, edit. I also need a couple more lenses but I don't know what lenses to use for what, so those package deals would help so much too !
Great video! I do TH-cam to drive business to our store and website. You're right, every day I wish I sold a digital product instead of a physical product. Retail has become so damn complex and when you add the need for a million dollars of physical inventory things can get tense. Anywho, thanks for your continued content. It's helped me a bunch.
I’ve literally been on one of those skillshare calls with a zoom full of creators getting pitched on skillshare editing a course for us or taking our courses and putting them on skillshare. It started to feel like we would be doing them a favor. Or like we were just working for them.
dropping gems 💎 this was super valuable - the key takeaway I learned from watching this video is to own the means of operations, trust your intuition - stay on your path, not every opportunity is meant for you 💯
Thanks for taking the time to go through everything, very helpful. 👏 I also love that you checking your notes made it into the edit because it reinforces the authenticity needed to be genuine on this platform. Great stuff.
This is so so helpful Sara! I’ve been freelancing full time for nearly 2 years now and it’s been a roller coaster at best but I wouldn’t trade making a living being a creative for anything. Definitely encouraging to see the success you’ve had despite some of the challenges! Thank you for sharing 🩷
This was incredible and very eye opening. Even being a small TH-camr now, it’s cool to see a successful entrepreneur talking about the same things that I’m struggling with.
I need a nap now. Rewinded a few times to make sure I understood everything and just taking in everything drained me lol. I imagine how you felt after filming. But great advice! Definitely going to consider that as I grow more and more on my TH-cam channel
Oooo a long one, as someone who eventually is going to do this full time I am so glad you made this, been watching you for years now ( met you back in 2016 at VidCon but that’s a story for another day ) and you have been so inspiring, so can’t wait to get my train on an running one day soon!
Loved this video. Thanks for the reminder to go slow and to build on my vision versus having to work with too many people. I think you should do a video on sustainability.
I'm not really planning on starting a creative journey, but this was a really great video and I watched it all the way through anyway! Thank you for this, Sara!
I Just started as a photographer and videographer. Making my dreams come true on TH-cam is really hard. My only issue is I don't love the idea of weddings. I did three last month as a B cam and one as the main photographer. I need to start getting small corporate gigs and businesses to create content for.😊
This was a great explanation of why as a cinematographer / director, of commercials for a couple of decades that the whole market changed. There is so much great content created by TH-camrs who want to be excellent, that they can figure it out on TH-cam. It used to be sort of a trade craft / guild secret. This is great advice. I was more of a freelance skilled technician in a niche market type.
This video was a lot, to take in... you gave an insight to so much (including ups and downs) and I am just now, trying to start youtube. I have been in the startup side before and have tried to start something from scratch and failed horribly after putting in ton of time and energy and burnt out. The hardest part for me always had been marketing it and selling it. Now, after a while I have figured out to start youtube to have an influence over my space, then start a middle ground service/consuting business around it and then starting the actual business which would give me a ton of experience already with user's problems and challenges and also a channel to market my product/service. But trying to start A creative journey is a mountain by itself that I have been trying to learn everything and getting on with it for a year now... and although, I wasn't ever planning to go the personal brand or lifestyle business side (I actually have no plan of where my youtube journey should take me)... Thinking about it all gives me a headache, but also a lot of clarity. Thanks for making this!
Hey lady! I'm really looking forward to part two! Also, love your videos, especially those like this one that have that real personal touch. You rock !
You know…. I always wondered if this subject was only a concept made up for a movie, but never a real thing. Thanks for explaining it. I am excited for you! Thank you for the info ❤
Sara! This video was so helpful to me. I’m going to watch it again tomorrow. I’m dying to know what else is in your notebook! Thank you for sharing what you’ve learned. Your commentary about being your own brand and the pros / cons of focusing heavily on a niche were really helpful. I’m thinking about how I want to start and this is what I needed. ❤
I would be terrified to have to rely on a platform to make a living. YT could kill anyone off for no reason. Even if you have sponsorships or other peripheral offerings, you still need the platform to have a presence. Congrats if someone can do it, but I wouldn't have the stomach for it.
It can get a lot but I would argue most skills you learn being a TH-camr (that I highlight in this video) are easily marketable to other individuals or companies. If you weren’t able to replicate success then you could offer your services behind the scenes for other at a decent rate! But yeah it’s definitely a high risk (to mental health) / high reward situation
@@Jeff_Putz you sure can, and Jason is right, companies are laying off people daily now in the thousands, nothing is safe or secure, so go for what you aspire for.
@@saradietschyyeah, that's fair. I think part of it is just the discouragement comes from the old idea that the Internet removed gatekeepers. Turns out there are just different gatekeepers.
Thanks Sara. Only discovered you today via the Editing Podcast. So glad I did. This video is really helpful as a small video production business. Lov'in your work👊
thank you, its crazy how much money goes into being a creator, and how quickly savings run out when you go full time. this was quite insightful and will help me change the course of my financial fortunes. thank you
Thank you Sara for this. I'm still early in my journey and this video has helped me a lot in terms of having a clearer vision of what to expect of my future. Having a grounded perspective like you have given in this video can really help us creatives that are still just floating around, looking for any form of beacon to cling on to.
I have been making content since 2016 and have always wanted to make content as my living and won’t stop until I get there, but this video really helped put more into perspective and definitely took in some new info. Great video as always!
35:30 I have wondered for YEARS what that project video was about. Thank you for finally sharing the answer 😭😭😭 Figured it was something to do with AI video stuff
I loved the video. Thank you for sharing. Can you please share the technique for using your iPad and the PIP setup? I'm assuming you're using Apple Notes. How are you connecting the video stream from the iPad? Is the PIP set in pos,t or are you using another device? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Good video. According to google says only 4 percent of creators make over 100k and 12 percent make over 50k and near half maks only 1k. That means about 10 million or less are able to make a living from it. 1 in 6 is not bad odds Especially when you mention setting up a actual business in the processed and able to scale.🎉
