    For everyone concerned about the flutter sound being Compressor Surge, I have been doing a lot of looking around about this and it all comes back to compressor surge, which is ultimately not great for the turbo. Although, Boomba is adamant that their BPV rapidly opens and closes at lower boost levels which creates a similar fluttering noise (I will further look into this). They say it is not turbine stall or any kind of surge. The flutter goes away at higher boost levels because, according to Boomba, it's either fully open or closed and doesn't oscillate at that point because of the high level of pressure. Take all of this with a grain of salt, this is just what they have told me. Thanks guys!!

      TrackRecord I agree with Chuck Hoy off pedal flutter from what I'm told is just from wasted air your motor won't use at low RPM yes the the air does push back a bit causing the flutter noise. But like check said if you're on the gas and it's fluttering causing power surge. An break the words down. Power and surge this would mean a surge type condition under load or giving it gas.
      Pay attention the next time you get on the gas hard when you let off it . I bet money you hear that wonderful swishhhh we're all familiar with. Then try it low RPM minimum load an you'll probably hear a lil flutter. My SRT had done it since I installed 50 trimm.

    • @PrincessLorelei
      @PrincessLorelei 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anthony Choueiry I'm going to have to disagree on this one. The recirculation valve is effectively still going to have an effect on the air going in/out of the intake, making it functionally extremely similar to a blow off valve, with one exception that I'll get into. If the turbo has built up enough momentum to build pressure, and that pressure is released into the intake, much of that air will make it to the atmosphere more or less. After all, pre-turbo, the intake is effectively just a tube open to the world. The factory one has a silencer and restrictive airbox that muffles the sounds. However, the Cobb intake does not, and even the factory recirculation valve sounds very similar to a blow off valve dumping to the atmosphere, complete with occasional fluttery noises.
      The difference is that the air is dumped after the MAF, making sure the metering of airflow is correct.
      I got the Perrin recirculation valve and the sound has changed slightly from stock. WOT is actually slightly quieter since it doesn't leak back into the intake. High RPM sudden letoff from WOT is a nice clean sound, but on and off at mid RPMs can have fluttery sounds. However, the boost pressure always shows reasonable values, always much less than peak boost values.

    • @PrincessLorelei
      @PrincessLorelei 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Anthony Choueiry I am not at all confused. I know very well what will happen if the air is vented *directly* to the atmosphere - excessive fuel will be injected since the air that has been metered by the MAF is "lost" so to speak. Vehicles that use a MAF must dump the air back into the intake tract after the MAF so any changes to airflow and mass can be measured. And that is really the only difference. If the tube that dumped the air back into the intake tube was open to the atmosphere directly, it would just be a BOV.
      The only reason for dumping into the intake is so as that air takes whatever the path of least resistance may be, the MAF, and by result, the ECU, is aware of this. It's like everyone keeps forgetting what the intake is before the turbo. It's a *tube*. It is almost completely open to the atmosphere, minus the air filter.
      If you remove the muffling properties of the stock intake with an aftermarket intake (ECU tuning will be required due to MAF relocation and flow changes), you can easily hear the recirculation valve opening and dumping that air. Besides the momentum of air moving through the tube toward the turbo, there is virtually nothing stopping the air dumped by the recirculation valve from reentering the atmosphere. That air will go in whatever direction has the least resistance, and where it goes is kind of irrelevant. Since the source of the disruption of the flow of air is after the mass air flow sensor, the sensor will be aware of whatever changes this causes to the net flow of air across it. Basically, the ability to measure this air isn't lost because to expand, it will influence the net flow across the MAF.
      And that's it. All a recirculation valve does is dump air into an open tube behind the MAF instead of *directly* to the atmosphere. The intake, pre-turbo, is still just a big pipe open to the atmosphere. That's a happy note for all the kids that want that "BOV sound"... Change the intake and get the necessary tune and everyone around can hear all the turbo noises out there when you get on it.

      Colin Smith the stock valve does leak quite a bit. Check out the second video linked in the desc. The boomba valve just retains air, that’s already been taken in, better than stock. They also show some dyno maps to show their testing.

      The stocker leaks only a little bit by design and only when off boost. The only place any power might be added is when you first step on the gas and start to build boost. No peak power was added though. And Boomba is pretty cheap and has issues reported by multiple people. If you need one, I would go with a Perrin unit. Much better made and better adjust-ability for different set ups down the road if you go for bigger power.

    • @MachuPichuu

      Chris Dontworryaboutit The Boomba BPV is quite high quality and I have had no issues with mine. Mid throttle response is greatly improved and top end slightly as well. There is Dyno logs to prove it. The stock BPV is very leaky, mostly by design as you stated. Boomba had great support and will take care of anyone having issues with their products. Not too fond of the sound but it's growing on me.

    I know it might be kinda boring, but could you guys do a video showing where you place the Jack and jack stands? I watched you Jack the driver side from the pinch weld, then you cut and it's up on Jack stands on both sides. Its pretty much impossible to got both the Jack and stands on the pinch weld at the same time. I have also seen where it looks like you put the Jack stands on part of the suspension. It would be great to see more detail. Great videos BTW.

      I ran into the same issue with my WRX, because my low profile jack still wasn't low enough to go all the way underneath the front lip to hit the center service jack spot. I used the alternate jack points to lift the car on one side high enough to get a jack stand under the pinch weld and had to do a hockey pockey dance around the car to get my stands in place. There are diagrams of the jack points on a few different forums if you do some googling. I finally just ended up buying some race ramps to get my front lip high enough for my jack to go straight down the center so I could just raise it high enough to put my jack stands under the pinch welds, works like a charm now.

    Just going to throw my 2 cents in as well...the stock BOV is fully recirculating back into the intake side of the turbo helping to keep it spooled up between gears. It does not vent to atmosphere as mentioned in the video. If you want the noise and want it recirculating like the stock BOV, then get something like the GFB BOV which has a stiffer spring as well. Cheers.

If you choose from bpv's you should be fine. If you get one (since you will be right by it when you install your'e bpv go ahead and get a turbo inlet (grimmspeed makes a nice one) as well and both are safe to roll with. not true, the bpv helped make my throttle input way smoother on my 2020 wrx brand new. i didnt know it added power when i first installed it, but i definitely can tell its a tad bit quicker, coupled that with a nameless muffler delete and the throttle input got insanely smoother. idk where im at for power because the claims from the manufactures may not reflect that for us but, i can safely say i beat a healthy hawk eye sti in my wrx 3 out of the 4 times. thats the only testing ive done and those are the only "power mods" ive done. i dont really consider these power mods but others may. i just wanted more turbo sound and an actual exhaust note. but im happy to say that i can finally beat a stock sti lol xD. oh also, those 2 things helped keep it pulling past 5500 rpms where it normally felt like the power stopped. now it feels like it pulls to about 6k maybe 6200 rpms. cant wait to do a stage 1 tune soon. not really looking for power just great sound. also no surge on my boomba atm. but i am looking to get a perrin or cobb bpv soon anyways.

  • @thundrstruck87
    @thundrstruck87 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey TR,
    The sound you're hearing when you let off the throttle, could be one of two things. Either the Piston inside the BPV is moving with the airflow through the BPV causing that flutter noise as it goes up and down, or the air is being routed back through the intake. Both of which are fine, and should not cause damage.
    Usually when you have an aftermarket intake you can hear "turbo noises" better. I have an aftermarket intake in my ST and I hear that beautiful flutter all day long at low rpm not through my boomba bov.
    Also, Compressor surge is when the turbo is too big for the engine and the motor cannot digest all that extra air that is being pumped into it, so it sends the air back through the turbo under load, that is incredibly hard on the turbo and will cause damage.
    You are not experiencing compressor surge.

    • @NVRFinished

      TJ Struck I’ve heard it could be both too, Boomba will say it’s the piston in the valve that’s fluttering and my tuner said that’s not possible. If it was surge, I don’t believe I’m running near enough boost or have a big enough turbo to cause any damage anyways, people have been running this thing for 50,000 miles without any issues (so I’ve been told) sooooo at this point, I am going to leave it in until I go big turbo and then I’ll swap out for something that manages the boost pressure more precisely and that has an adjustable spring rate. I don’t doubt Boombas quality but it’s just strange that Perrin and others like Nameless will both say you shouldn’t hear flutter 🤷‍♂️ but what the heck do I know haha. Thanks for info though dude!

    • @thundrstruck87
      @thundrstruck87 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Boomba BOV will not flutter, but will release pressure every second at certain MPH and engine load. Like 80mph under slight load "psh" ..."psh"..."psh", etc. It might be possible that the spring is rated too stiff to be opened right away? There's no way you can push your stock turbo not even close to the limit of air the FA20 can digest, so compressor surge shouldn't be considered :)
      True, I believe them. They do work on these platforms more than myself and other car enthusiasts, so they would know best. But I figured I would just give my .02c or what's it worth to help you become at ease a bit :)

    • @jeremiahgreen5005

      Sand Man, that’s a debatable topic my mans. Anything you change on the car potentially won’t have the warranty for it because it’s now after market the parts you leave alone obviously will still have their warranty on them but it will boil down to which dealership you go to as to whether they say hey you’re modified and flag your car, or they’re cool with it down the road if you have a future problem. If this helps any, I have the Boomba bypass valve installed on my car and the dealership is unphased by it.

    Best thing about this video was your Milwaukee impact gun. If you get a pro tune(not pre-loaded from cobb), then you'll get true whp gains.

    • @NVRFinished
      @NVRFinished  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True about the Impact gun haha, that thing is a huge help. Ive been running a pro-tune for about 8 months now (full turboback, catless, intake, boost controller, tgv and egr, etc...) Still around 310whp, but the bpv was more of just a fun one. Even though there is a bit of controversy around it. I'll probably swap it out with something else when I go with a bigger turbo set up.

    • @marcopolo8289
      @marcopolo8289 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TrackRecord you'll want to build your engine block before you make more then 450awhp. N1 forged crankshaft, n1 rods and Wiseco pistons. Its expensive but you'll be able to hold almost 900awhp safely aslong as you do really good maintenance. When you go big turbo you'll need a FMIC and external wastegate. I recommend BW efr7163 if you want to keep your TMIC. That's the biggest you'll be able to go with a TMIC

    • @marcopolo8289
      @marcopolo8289 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      K1 cnc crankshaft and rods** sorry for the type-o. It auto corrected to N1 (like invidia exhaust) they are counter balanced and have oil flow holes to better prevent against the notorious ringland failure.

  • @1cynik
    @1cynik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Being a long time multiple wrx and STi owner, this is 180 degrees opposite from anything I’ve seen. Aftermarket BPVs have negligible to zero positive effect on untuned Subaru engines. Even with supporting mods people don’t usually see any positive performance gains from adding an atmospheric BPV. There are a few recirculating ones on the market, but all the ones I’ve had experience with or read reviews about, have serious reliability issues. Don’t be BOV guy.

    • @echoplexhandlesaredumb

    BPV/BOV won't do anything for you unless your stock BPV actuator was not working properly, or was leaking to the atmosphere.

    • @NVRFinished
      @NVRFinished  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been doing a lot of looking around about this and it all comes back to compressor surge. Basically what you are describing, although Boomba is adamant that their BPV rapidly opens and closes at lower boost levels which creates a similar fluttering noise (I will further look into this). They say it is not turbine stall or any kind of surge. The flutter goes away at higher boost levels because, according to Boomba, it's either open or closed and doesn't oscillate at that point because of the high level of pressure. Take all of this with a grain of salt, this is just what they have told me.

    • @NVRFinished
      @NVRFinished  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue STI Boomba has dyno tests with stock and with the BPV running at a difference of 15hp. Not sure if that should be taken at face value, or questioned, but that’s what they claim. But they really should only be allowing for a better boost build and more accurately manage pressure, so there isn’t any chance of turbo stall or compressor surge.

    All you've done is create a post MAF leak if the car isn't tuned for a valve that doesn't recirc into the intake.
    You'll be rich in between shift cause you let metered air out of the system instead of letting it go back through the intake.

    • @BLACK05GO1

      Don't buy a WRX or STi if you plan on keeping it stock. They are way too slow stock (unless you like being slower than all the other fast cars on the road) and almost everyone that buys them plans on modifying them. WRX and STi respond extremely well to modifications and that's what makes them a popular choice for most buyers. A simple setup that is very reliable is a full exhaust (downpipe, high flow cats, exhaust) and tuning. That provides a really nice performance increase and a very reliable car. For people who want more power, a turbo upgrade with supporting mods is the way to go. I did that to my WRX and STi.
