So you want to repair SOUNDIGITAL amplifiers? Tips & component values

  • It's annoyed me for some time now that Soundigital are so secretive with their part numbers inside their amplifiers. I would understand it more if they had developed a totally new and unique circuit design that offered something over and above the competition but in reality this is just your bog standard high switch freq class D circuit. So i decided to share for you guys some of my findings which should help you get these amps back up and running. They are not overly complicated and there are a limited number of components here that can fail so in effect by replacing enough of them you should eventually hit jackpot.

That PIC chip is just performing the PWM for the PSU, you could replace it. It should also be monitoring the 12V supply, the output supply, temperature, possibly aux supplies and over current conditions. It has nothing to do with the amplifier control and feedback, that driver chip you are mentioning controls the amplifier stage. So, you could retrofit and bypass the PIC chip, or program your own, if you know how :) By the way, those 5 test points are actually in-circuit programming points, the IC can be soldered on the PCB and then programmed.

I work in an electronics laboratory, but it is in a large industry, there I use equipment from ABi electronics, a Boardmaster 8000, this equipment does not work miracles, but it can save you days of analysis, even more so in the industry when a machine that runs 24 hours a day there is a problem with some electronic card this is a huge loss, so we have to be quick in the diagnosis. As these amplifiers do not have many components, it is easy to track defects in-circuit, mapping, checking V-I curves, etc. obviously, you often need another board in good condition, but over time you end up not even needing it, because you get used to some V-I curves of certain components, and you see the difference even without having another good board to compare, detail using multimeters, measuring resistance or anything like that doesn't usually work, so this V-I curve method really helps. And it still has the advantage of analysis without any type of power supply on the board and this avoids an accident that can add another problem and even render the equipment unusable.

Thank you so much for this video. I have a Sundown Audio SFB5000D on my bench that's in bad shape. At first I wasn't gonna touch it but I can't go out without a fight 😄😄. But, with this video, Google, and some other videos...I think I can get it back to working. Every once in awhile I'll buy a working amp to help aid me in the repair of another amp. But, since the part numbers aren't there it would have been pointless this time. Once again, great video and hello from Alabama, 🇺🇸✌🏾

Solid video man. Thank you for this. I'm trying to get a behringer eurolive speaker back to life. The thing poped a couple of mosfets and one of the driver ic. I'm a noob in electronics, and I'm looking at the speaker connections and I see 40volts on both. Accoeding to the schematic it looks right. I never tried to fix a lass D amp so this is all new to me. I'm scratching my head. The supply should be 70+ and 70- and its up there close to 80. Perhaps because I dont have a load atached. Anyway, replaced the ics and mosfets and what looks like an signal inverter ic. Feeling confident, power on and smoke comes fast xD
The struggle is real. I'll keep diging. Again, thanks for the video.

Car audio manufacturers must hate you. But yes some of them will grind the part no. , so people are required to send the equipment to manufacturer or service centre - this applies also to many Hi-end audio firms or other 'special' equipment. One of the best D-class explanation videos.

Awesome vid, really great you're sharing this info. BTW, the test pad near the PIC labeled "MOSI" is a Master Out Slave In connection. It's for SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) communication, it's used by the PIC to send data. It might possibly send diagnostic information that you could find useful when working on these amps.

  • @threeMetreJim

The Test points near the PIC chip and the other one with CLK and MOSI are programming headers. It actually says in circuit programming isolation resistors on the PCB as a clue. CLK is programing clock signal, DAT (for the PIC is programming data). Same for the other masked chip, CLK is clock signal and MOSI stands for Master Out Slave In (programming data), When not used for in circuit programming the pins can be used for other purposes, which is why you see a square wave on the MOSI pin. It's likely an AVR programmable micro of some sort, as they use an SPI bus for programming, PIC chips have their own programming format.
The 12v on the main rail at standby, and the single main rail voltage indicates the use of a non isolated boost converter. The 12v will feed through it's rectifiers to charge the rail caps even when the converter isn't switching. For the high power it's probably an interleaved converter, and why a micro (the PIC) is used to control the power supply.

      Great, thanks for the info!!

    • @threeMetreJim
      @threeMetreJim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@barevids The only issue is that if the masked chip is some sort of programmable chip, the VCC of 16V seems way too high, but there does seem to be a 5.6v zener close by that could be used to drop this to the usual around 5v for most micros. I can't be certain, without knowing the function of the IC. I quite often reverse engineer circuitry, as I repair electronic devices as a hobby (for people that I know), quite often reverse engineering the whole device if it's not too complex (takes quite a while though).

As someone who both designs and repairs circuit boards, I fully support right to repair. And I love this guys channel! Playing devils advocate for a moment, it is quite possible they are grinding the numbers off to protect their design, to make it more difficult for people to copy it. This is a somewhat common practice. Assume these guys created a design that they feel gives them an advantage in the market (cheaper to build, works better for same cost, etc..) For something as relatively simple as an audio amplifier, it would not be that difficult for someone in the industry to copy the design, or figure out their trade secrets, especially if they know all of the parts to use. Patents are often not a solution in today's world. Patents don't always deter manufacturers from other countries, and they're horribly expensive to defend, often so expensive that it doesn't make financial sense. And in today's global economy, you might just need patents in every country that your product might be sold into (or copied and sold into), plus the cash to defend your patent in each of those countries. Plus someone keeping a lookout in each of those countries for copies. Making it more difficult to copy by obscuring the identity of the parts might be a more effective, and more financially feasible way of deterring copies. It is very possible they are grinding the numbers off to prevent repairs, but at least as likely that they are doing it to make copying more difficult.
Edit --> One more thought; maybe the parts they are using are copies of name brand parts, and they don't want anyone to know they are knock off parts.

Hey I have this exact amplifier SD12k. Recently pulled my amplifier first-time mounting to box only in for 1 week. Amplifier was working when I pulled it out. The real capacitor got stuck to the back plate heard it come unhinged, I have one capacitor that seems to be broken off. Need to replace no other faults noticable should I replace? Or send to amp tech? Where to get new cap 200v 2200uf?

HI, When you measure a drive train wave, it looks like you operate one probe without ground clip connected. I always thought that ones need a two probes in diff mode on gate-source to measure this? What is your setup to achieve this? Thank you!

@@barevids Hi Sam, The Evo 800.4D uses 8 TO-252 MOSFETs in the power supply and a single pair of TO-252 MOSFETs for each of 4 outputs. All are heavily defaced. I was going to go on a parametric hunt for something suitable but figured it couldn't hurt to ask you.

Hi, I have the problem with my Soundigital 12000.1D EVO. I found blown resistors 10k and 3,3k at the pins 14, 15, 16 of lower IRS20957S. I replaced two driver chips IRS20957S, buffer chips ZXGD3005E6TA, blown resistors, shorted diode MURS120 at U1D and tantalum capacitor nearly lower IRS20957S. Now i have at the speaker output -1V DC but still no audio and CLIP LED is still light on. Output power mosfets checked and they are good. Can you tell me what i need to do next?
