TL;dr - 90% of bass amplifiers are one of 8 generic circuit designs, and while this Skar may be cheap, it shares the exact same circuit as many amps which you would deem as "reputable" and premium. - Hundreds of bass amplifiers have under 1v of high frequency noise on the output terminals, whether theyre cheap or "premium". This is not a problem. - EMF's scope was focused in on high frequency switching residue from the output section at around 120-150Khz. This is why he couldnt display an audio tone reliably. - Lower quality amplifiers with poorer output filtering will chip "harsher" than those with good filtering. This skar amp lets a lot of clip spikes and noise through, so clipping these will induce more coil heat than clipping something better designed. But not by much. - Class D amps either work, or they dont. If it was making clean audio and not smoking, it was working fine and will not exhibit a fault that slowly burns coils. - Power kills coils. If it stank, TURN IT DOWN. I would be happy to test one of these amps to confirm but someones gonna have to send one over, ideally from Europe as US-UK shipping is ridiculous.
I've had nothing but great results from skar audio equipment I sell and install skar audio and electrical is important as well as proper mounting of the amplifiers as any other skar is great. Alot of user error is the general cause for failed equipment!!
Boss, is there any way that i contact with you? I need some help. I'm using Sony XM-GTX6040 and JBL GT5-12 for 13 years. Still works as fine as the day i bought. But i upgraded my setup, bought a new sony mid speakers with crossover and tweeters. I'm having problems with tuning my amplifier... The speaker output is burning even if i keep the amplifier output low. (Subwoofer output is stays cool even if i push it to the limits) Edit: Having some problems with using the system on my house as well. On PC my subwoofer is working as a right front channel input, the speakers are working as a left front channel and i'm losing lots of sound when listening. Even if the setup is properly done... This only happens on PC
Sam to the rescue again! Thank you for clearing that up. And thank you for all the things you do for the audio community. Great content man. It is greatly appreciated!
This is excellent information . Too bad there aren't more people like Sam telling the truth , teaching , explaining and sharing helpful knowledge. All that and at no cost to the listener. Thanks sam!
The best Car Audio channel bar none! No other channel has as much knowledge and the ability to disseminate it for us enthusiasts. I can’t express how lucky we are to have you contribute to the scene. Love your humility too
I have McIntosh amps, purchased 1995, built for SQ, still running today. Recapped and meeting spec per the McI certified repair center. They are class A\AB but sound as good if not better than when purchased (better caps).. $10k install then, requested recently a new install with my McI amps and was told "haven't installed anything like that in decades", the industry has indeed changed. Nice video!!!
I believe this channel should be bigger. This dude has so much knowledge about car audio it’s crazy. Come on people subscribe to the channel. That way TH-cam will pay him more and we can see more amp explanations and more experiments!
I'm super happy you're going to get to the bottom of this, but I hope it doesn't start any drama between the two of you, there's already enough of that in car audio
Really enjoyed this and would love more of these explanation styles of videos. I liked the one you did on how an amplifier actually works and would love something on the Brazillian full bridges. I also think something that really breaks down on a component to component level what exactly is happening and a sort of visualization of the travel of the signal and power would be a big hit. Last, some sort of resource that compiles what amplifiers are essentially the same thing would be nice. EX: all of the 900-1k 4 ch class D's that were made by NVX, PPI, Polk, Hertz, etc and all of the S&I 2k and 3.5ks. This would be a good resource to see what the best value is and show what products are better or worse than thought. Thanks again!
Every 3k from Deaf Bonce ( AAK series ) Crescendo, Sundown, DD, Incriminator Audio, DC Audio are the same just diff colors and logos and stickers. “ Williston Audio Labs “ TH-cam channel has a few vids on this where he tested all the “ popular “ 3k ‘s..
I wish he could compare the Sound Stream version of that amp series. The older better board, and the crap they switched it with. Completely different design made to look like the original to fool people.
Up To Bat Entertainment Incriminator is different, Nick actually has a hand in the design and has them built in Korea. The rest are S&I and yes, are the exact same. Sundown has different models now.
I'm not even INTO car audio (home theater guy here) but I love LOVE watching your videos. A lot of the amplifier knowledge you share translates into home audio amps, especially our big power class D amps. So glad I subscribed.
I’ve been using the same amplifiers for almost a decade except for the newly purchased Smart3. With all the crappy amplifiers with different circuit designs, I rather play it safe and keep the system I have that works perfect than to say that “I’m bored of it” and risk buying something that will suck. But if something comes out with the same amount of power but more efficient, I’m all in for that. I’m all about efficiency and light weight.
I'm using more than decade old Ground Zero amplifier for sub, it's way bigger and heavier than most todays amp, but as far as efficiency goes, it's actually not that bad. Car audio is far behind with designs. Quality isn't something amazing though, pcb seems to be poorly made with cheaper components, but it makes it's rater power at 4 and 2 ohms and almost at 1ohm (88% of rated). If you take care of your equipment, it will last a long time.
@Bassotronics give me your review/input on your Smart3 so far... I just installed my Taramps Smart3 yesterday so I've only used it for about an hour it did alright though. I'm hoping not to have any issues. I know Big D w/Williston Audio Labs sang very high praises of the Smart3 which somewhat factored into my purchasing of the amp.
@ *It doesn't matter what your name is* Up to now my smart3 has been doing pretty good. It has never shut down on me and does not even get warm. As long as you have a battery close to it, or enough current to power it, you should be fine. It’s a good power beast for the price, small and lightweight.
@@Bassotronics that's great to hear. I do not have a second battery ran in my vehicle yet. I do have a 350amp H/O alternator, OFC 1/0 ga Big3 kit and a Northstar group 65 AGM starting battery in my car. If the Taramps smart3 does a good job for me that will be one of the best deals I've gotten in a long time. $279.99 for 3000 watts. THAT'S CHEAP!!
Excellent explanation, thank you Sam. Sean would never get to this level of explanation because I just don't think he has that kind of knowledge. He won't admit it either. But great job on this break down. I would love it if you did as many explanation video's as your heart desires. They are so interesting and you are the only person who explains them in a way my mind can grasp. Thank you for taking the time to share you knowledge and experience with the rest of us so we can learn and not waste money.
Great job Sam don't get discouraged on the channel not being as big as you want it to, you are doing a service to the car audio community that no one else is doing.
I’ve been watching your videos since the pioneer days and every time I see you post a vid I have to click on it to see what’s up and you never cease to amaze me I’ve learned so much about car audio and even just electronics in general from you and your videos, thank you for making yet again another great informational video, you will always be one of my most favorite TH-camrs of all time
Thank you for the awesome video, I know a lot of people will not understand the information you are putting out in this video. Being someone that has gone thru several electrical component classes for my job field this video was awesome to watch and hear the correct information being explained for people.
a lucid and well supported explanation. one additional point (from a very old school live audio engineer) - as an amp - any amp - goes into clipping, it gets closer and closer to alternating DC (square wave) which effectively hooks a battery with nearly the amp's rail voltage to the speaker. this will release the magic smoke. so if you want to play long and loud, buy amps with MORE RMS power than your speaker's rating. that said, thanks for the explanation as I bought a DS440 to drive the 4 JBL stadium speakers in my truck (4 ga. supply and a 116F cap) going to have check the gains very carefully with my handheld scope... hope I am not disappointed. cheers.
EMF again.. i remember when he started with SMD literally Christmas eve. Thank you for the vid the expalinations are top notch. Maybe we need to brand you a nick name.... Professor S. 😎
It's great that u have explained all of this. We can all learn from how you have replied in an objective and professional manner. You have answered the mistakes/problems of what was happening, without taking a personal or hypocritical view of video or person.
Great lesson Sam, as usual you explain it in a factual manner where as he that shall not be named just spouts crap and then makes excuses when he gets called out, he hated using proper test equipment and sets his gains by ear, which he claims is better than any equipment.
@@jutin2001 Yes he is. I cant even say how many videos he has that talks shit about other product and even other builders. He don't say names but if you know then you know.
@@ditto_75 That being said he sells some pretty amazing subs. I am not trying to defend his video. But he is extremely knowledgeable. He most likely knew his video was gonna rustle some feathers. That's why he does it. He is trying to push traffic to his website and TH-cam page. Looks like Sam took the bait. I am sure lots of people have gone and watched that video now to find out what this one is about. I subscribe to his channel and this one. As long as you know going in the type of person he is, you learn not to take everything he says and does so seriously. Also there are probably people on that video trashing him and referencing this video now and in turn pushing some traffic Sam's way. I enjoy both channels. Sam seems like a total stand up cool dude. Sean from EMF seems pretty rough around the edges, but has always been extremely helpful and quick to answer whenever I have had an issue or needed an answer about something.
Car audio has always had the worst drama BUT, In return we get videos like this. Full of education! It just depends on you to do your own research and know who to receive your information from😊 I’ve done mine. This is the guy!!

Excellent information. I'm glad I found this channel. For the record my last car I had for 11 years. I had all Alpine speakers and PDX series amps for all 11 years. I still have my 97 Sonoma with Alpine head unit, speakers and amps. It all still works. I'm glad the premium price they charge would appear to be worth it.
It's cool guys I have some sweet ass cameras, I just jumped in the workshop and taped the Webcam to the screen real quick to give a teleprompter effect for the script I put together for this video so that I was still somewhat looking at the lens 😂 next video will be nicer I promise lol
This is the reason right here that I buy very specific brand amplifiers, and also I specifically do not buy new amps. I prefer old school amps, as in those made in the late 80's to early 90's. Even though some of these amps have been repaired, I still love the hell out of them. My favorite brands are, Phoenix Gold, Audio Art, Polk Audio, and Audio Control. I have 4 cars, all with extensive systems (or kits) installed, all rocking old school audio equipment. The only stuff I really buy new are speakers, and that's because speaker technology has actually gotten a lot better than 30 years ago.... And again, thank you Sam for all your hard work and audio dedication. BTW, I have almost 40 amps in my collection. People need to realize that this equipment has limitations, and you can't go beyond them too much or risk damage....
Well said Sir! Former Audio Engineer from the 80/90s now moved on to IT. We always tried to explain that you will blow a speaker quicker under-powering it than over-powering it. The kids would scratch their heads and look at us like we were stupid. Thanks for Explaining Class D, That was in its infancy when I did sound and really didn't know how it worked.
I know you say your channel is tiny, and it's honestly cuz not many people want to indulge on fixing amps. They just wanna be loud. But us nerds that like the depth into it, we're thirsty for the knowledge. And what you provide to the community is priceless. So just know you're hard work does pay off, and ppl admire ya for it! God bless from across the lake lol.
Love it! Sam you're one of the most knowledgeable yet down to earth people I've seen. Great job and thanks for sharing this valuable info.👌 . Edit: I love to see your video on full-bridge brazillian amps!
Wish I could tag the like button 20 times. I had left a comment on the emf video saying same as you did, just in terms of a guy who isn't quite rolling at that level of breaking it down so thoroughly. Thankyou for bringing out the truth........
Great explanation of EMF's screw-up and what to expect from Class D anps. Funny thing about his scope, I left a comment of his page to use a real scope not a multimeter/scope. I recently got my hands on the same exact HP scope as you use. It's been quite a few years since I did amp repairs, all were Class A/B never worked on a Class D. Love watching your videos, very informative and educational!
Sam you are a GOD when its comes to this, thanks for a better understanding plus this is your job.....BTW I love your channel plus you know your stuff arbouts electronics no just amps thanks from cleveland ohio and please dont stop making videos
thank you. all people seem to care about is spl and playing loud. i was not in this camp and had much trouble. it touch years of research and trying new things. it took me looking else where and spending a ton of time with installs.
Honestly didn't watch this video Sam I didn't have time but I read the comments. Thank you for another clarification. Thank you for KEEPING IT PROFESSIONAL.
Thank you so much for the info. I knew there was something wrong with what I was seeing on his scope. I even commented on how the waves would change when he turned it off and back on again. I didn't even think about looking at what frequency it was reading and didnt even consider the auto zoom feature. Thanks again for the well explained information. You got yourself another subscriber
Valuable information! Thank you! I know nothing of circuitry but love learning this stuff thank you! A review of what makes brands like JL ROCKSFORD JBL good, would be great.
I love your videos bro! So glad you came to the rescue on EMF's video. Hopefully he will watch this and fix his video. Making a mistake is only human and I just want proper facts yo.
Perfect video mate. Knowledge is the best, like all the time. Entertainment and a good laugh is always welcome. People are going to do anything to shine light on a particular brand. either its monetary gains or notoriety. This aspect of car audio will be always like this. I say bass it out however your pocket can allow you to. Just make sure you have a fire extinguisher for those situations were you are just not sure about the install, or proper electrical supply!
Nice explanation vid bro...i seen the original that this stemmed from. I know as well as many others that people mess with things/gain knobs after they leave the shop...then swear up an down that they didn't...oh well *subscribed
AMAZING info as always!! i always share your videos as a source of solid info. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and spread the info you have learned and put to work. I no doubt have learned a good amount from your videos over the years. Thanks again!
Great video Sam, agree that most amplifiers made now days are disposable and not well made see same basic designs every time again and again in car audio. I find most A/B class amps muffled and restricted in the preamp stage with many bad op-amp's in series and using electrolytics on signal lines instead of plastic poly mica caps. Most even use carbon resistors instead of metal film resistors and all these things degrade the signal even more when you add them all up. The output then is sent to the final amplification stage of the amp with a bunch of junk and is robbed of all dynamics fidelity and clarity. Changing the pre amp board in most amplifiers makes a huge difference like night and day for cheap or even some expensive amps most of the time. Then changing the power and filtering caps where its most important no need to go overboard. I keep my amps for decades, never damaged audio gear and trust me i play loud all day every day everywhere, i just know how much to push and how to install properly just saying cause there is so much i see shops do in a hurry it's stupid/scary. Absolutely love designing my own preamps in eagle and then printing and etching, drilling, populating the boards and the difference is so rewarding it amazes me every amp i mod.
Just found about your channel and wish I had many years ago. You Sir, are brilliant. I can not express how much I enjoyed you telling it like it is about the car audio amp/electronics industry. Such a massive profit margin on rerun repeat tech. Really enjoyed proving the "burnt coil noise freq" was total BS. Subbed and now binging on your channel to catch up! Thanks! I also really appreciate your Distortion tester using a speaker and cap! Brilliant! I do agree. You should have millions of subs.
@@barevids Honored to be able to learn from you to understand amps and systems so much better. I'm an IPC620 certified cable fabricator, but want to learn more about the amps. I can build cables for everything on the planet unless it is 100% proprietary components.
id love to see the full bridge video. id really really like to see a well thought out full bridge for the type of car audio scene we have in america and the uk. the old awesome full bridge amps from a few well known companies are getting hard to find.
The engineers at Rockford fosgate were well aware of transients from high speed switching power supplies and also of generated high frequency harmonics due to bleed over from a energized output transistor while at idle status , their filtration system took all of this into account and because of the ,, frequency response or more correctly , the mosfets amplification curve in particular tuned array the engineers decided the ambient high frequency idle signal generated by the transistors in standby mode was NOT an issue to address as the waveform high frequency rolled off as soon as power was created by the input signal driving the preamp stage and the final output transistors began to conduct !! Remember these Rockford fosgate amplifiers we're made in 1987 !! Now the engineers at maxxsonics laboratories designed the Hifonics amplifier with ultra fi outputs and matched output transistors along with twin turbo power supplies , torroids , double sided military grade printed circuit boards and I know many people don't wanna hear it , but the Brutus amp is no joke ! Bottom line yes there are cheaply designed amplifiers and cheaply designed speakers , but clipping an amplifier by excessive distortion from the driven input signal creates heat in the voice coil and that is what cooks speakers !
Btw I’m sure car audio will come back into fashion soon! I did a stereo install as my final year school CDT project! I did a stealth shelf before they were a normal thing!🤣 back then they used to have car stereo competitions and even magazines about it all. It’s nice to see the passion. You are not alone!👍🏽
I mentioned in emfs video my experience with a brand name 4 channel amp. I used it for less then a day. Now whether my amp was faulty or not I had all kinds of issue. In my case nothing on my end was user error. I later took the amp and decide to take a look on my scope to what was happening. True the output filters were letting a frequency pass at idle, that didnt surprise me. But it was letting voltage through at 1.03volts without a input signal. This was audible while the unit was in my vehicle. It was like a reverb, not a bad ground loop. I also found many poor solder reworks and even signs of burnt traces. My amp was marked new. I think in some cases these amps at factory fail QC and are then reworked, and that's where the problem lies. Human error once again but not on the consumer level. I've found this 3 times in chinese amps out of the 10 I've bought over the past 5 years. I was trying to chase the perfect budget system. I've since gave that idea up and went back to my fosgate gear. I've found in one brand solder wick balls as well as solder rosin core solder. That peice was well over 2 inches long. Stuck to a thermal pad. If the amp hadn't had a plexiglass bottom that would have dislodged and taken the amp out. Poor QC, and human error kill amps.
Finally, someone is not praising the junk that keeps being pushed onto the public. Thank you! I think of a certain 80-year-old with huge glasses that brags up every $2500 pair of speakers when even an idiot can see by the numbers the efficiency is pathetic. Keep up the good work!
Excellent presentation, & explanation !!! You are spot on when you stated that we are always looking to , or constantly up grading our audio equipment. I am ‘’guilty’’ as charged. Being a human, I have addictions, & ‘’guilty’’ pleasures. Car audio is on top of my the list. For others, it may be sports, drugs, sex, alcohol, tobacco,.. etc. etc. Whatever it may be, we all have some sort of addiction to something. With that being said, all of us try to be better than the next person, and think that the brands we have are better than the brands our peers have. When in reality, most of the amps are the same build, with the difference being name brands, heat sink styles, colors, & any other items added to set them apart from each other. You do a great job breaking down the different components, & explaining what they do, and there purpose. Even a ignoramus like me can understand what your explaining. Keep up the great videos!! Go out and get yourself a better camera stand, & out fit it with a high quality camera. Your look pale. Unless it’s the lighting.
Hey mate. Love the vids. Any chance you could do a video on teh feasibility of using the power supply sectino of these amps as either a 230vac to xxdc PSU or 12vDC to 24VDC PSU or something along those lines?

@@lowhertzhighspl from everything I've both heard & seen the Skar SKV Series amps are great, solid amps. I haven't had one yet. I actually just installed my first Brazilian amplifier on a skar 18" sub yesterday. I got a Taramps Smart3, lol I just had to see what all the fuss was about & for only $279.99 w/free shipping & no tax I just could not pass it up. Though I will be buying a Korean when my new woofer is broke in. Plan to upgrade to a 5k. Not sure the brand, I really like the Synergy, Wolfram, Deaf Bonce AAK, & Skar SKV. Though as we learn in Sam's vids I'm not sure how much of a difference their actually may be between any of those I just named besides miniscule price differences. I will say that I've personally had the Chinese Skar RP-2000.1D & DID NOT like that amp. I actually sent it back to Skar under their 30 day no hassle return policy & they happily refunded no questions asked, sent me shipping labels so it didn't cost me a dime * quickly refunded my money. Skars customer service is top notch. I think I'm just not a fan of Chinese amps. Do you have a Chinese amp you like or recommend?
@SubCult Productions you said you've been running Taramps for over a year without too many issues... May I ask what specific Taramps you are using & the issues you've had thus far? I'm wondering what I should look out for as I just installed my Taramps Smart3 yesterday & it is my first Brazilian amplifier. So I've only used it for about an hour which isn't near enough time to acquaint myself with the amp.
@@itdoesntmatterwhatyourname6128 md series, both the 5k and the 12k. Currently 2 12ks. The biggest issue ive had with the amps is protecting pretty often when i was wired at .5, pretty sure that was because i had very little rise tho. Now they wired at .8 and they love it. Other issues are minor, fans are loud as fuck for the first minute or so after turn on and cant handle anything over 2v rca voltage
@@SubCultProductions I'm curious as to whether your bass tone all sounds flat no matter the song you are playing? I have been using my Taramps Smart3 & all the bass Sounds the same no matter what songs I play. It all sounds bland, flat, boring & plain. Now the amp puts out great power it moves the sub with ease & bangs hard but theirs no warm bass tone... Is this common with Brazilian full bridge amps? Now I know Brazilian amps aren't known for their SQ by any stretch of the imagination but I'd never guessed they sounded this dull! Tbh I just ordered what's supposed to be a nice quality Korean amp a couple hours ago. So I guess in two or three days I'll get the chance to see if the Taramps Smart3 is to fault as to why my bass sounds so bland. I will admit I'm a lil anxious for the Korean amp to arrive so I can see & hear first-hand what all the fuss is about when it comes to Korean amps. If the bass still sounds dull then its back to the drawing board.
Good job Sam. There are some issues with the RP2K. Have repaired many of them over most other brands. I think board layout is the issue but I'm not a engineer. Keep it come bro. Doing a fine job.
My expensive Alpine PDX M6 killed an expensive $600 13TW5V2 since it didn’t have DC offset protection... but I fixed it myself (after the authorized repair facility URS Radio (Useless Radio) claimed they couldn’t) and everything’s been great! They all have issues and quirks, even the good ones.
Thanks for the information before I watched that other video, I had just ordered a Skar amp.. So thanks for clearing this up! Looking forward to learning more from your channel.
More like this please! This was awesome! For years I've been wanting this kind of info. Don't get me wrong, I love amp dynos, but I like learning/ comprehending what makes brand "A" better than brand "B" when both products put out the same power. If a watt is a watt, then, what is it about the internals that makes brand "A" better? And what's up with "dirty power"? I always hear about it when people reference Audiopipe. Given this videos info about how common those boards are, how can people slam one brand as having dirty power,, only to recommend another brand that uses the same basic internals? Anyway, thanks. You definitely deserve more subscribers. I think more videos like this would get you more.

TL;dr
- 90% of bass amplifiers are one of 8 generic circuit designs, and while this Skar may be cheap, it shares the exact same circuit as many amps which you would deem as "reputable" and premium.

Looking forward to that video on the Brazillian amplifiers.. particularly Taramps.. HD and MD model..
I am as well as soon as he mentioned it
Really enjoyed this and would love more of these explanation styles of videos.
Watch the test on Williston Audio Labs of Taramps Smart 3.
Barry Schanz Ues, I watch Big D, I’m referring more to the technical differences between half bridge “Korean” and full bridge “Brazilian”
@ *It doesn't matter what your name is*
Up to now my smart3 has been doing pretty good.
Cant wait to see this Sam. Seen your comments on his video and was like, Oh Shit! I've learned so much from your videos, cant wait for this one.
Excellent explanation, thank you Sam. Sean would never get to this level of explanation because I just don't think he has that kind of knowledge. He won't admit it either. But great job on this break down. I would love it if you did as many explanation video's as your heart desires. Thank you for the awesome video, I know a lot of people will not understand the information you are putting out in this video. Being someone that has gone thru several electrical component classes for my job field this video was awesome to watch and hear the correct information being explained for people.
a lucid and well supported explanation. one additional point (from a very old school live audio engineer) - as an amp - any amp - goes into clipping, it gets closer and closer to alternating DC (square wave) which effectively hooks a battery with nearly the amp's rail voltage to the speaker. this will release the magic smoke. so if you want to play long and loud, buy amps with MORE RMS power than your speaker's rating.
that said, thanks for the explanation as I bought a DS440 to drive the 4 JBL stadium speakers in my truck (4 ga. supply and a 116F cap) going to have check the gains very carefully with my handheld scope... hope I am not disappointed. cheers.

This is why I love this channel. Knowledge is power and barevids is all powerful. 🍻

I love what you do. I have learned a lot from you. I hope you always do this.

I love this video more then I have ever loved a car audio video in MY LIFE ...SAM!! you GREAT! love you buddy !
Such a massive profit margin on rerun repeat tech.

id love to see the full bridge video. id really really like to see a well thought out full bridge for the type of car audio scene we have in america and the uk. the old awesome full bridge amps from a few well known companies are getting hard to find.

Bottom line yes there are cheaply designed amplifiers and cheaply designed speakers , but clipping an amplifier by excessive distortion from the driven input signal creates heat in the voice coil and that is what cooks speakers !
are you a maxxsonics shill?? i’ve smoked a few brutus amps and know many people that have also. hifonics ain’t what they used to be.

@@lowhertzhighspl from everything I've both heard & seen the Skar SKV Series amps are great, solid amps. I haven't had one yet.
