And later the whole country rose up against the Vietnam War! It shows her values and strong convictions when she didn’t want to share the stage with the extremists! Where does one draw the line how much extremism one can tolerate? She is admirable and courageous, really! 🎉
I didn’t watch the whole video, but I’d sssume that Allen is uncompromising in his vision of how his movies should be made and Baez is stubborn and non-malleable to work with. Huge stars (and there was not many as big as Baez for a time) will often be like that. Is there really a “story” here? Must admit that I had no idea that these two even contemplated working together-sort of like hot fudge and tuna fish is my intuitive feeling.
Good points, also Woody Allen is a MAN of integrity, and the abuse claims were proven FALSE as Mia Farrow fabricated them as ex's do. Also, Soon Yi was a 21-year-old ADULT when SHE MARRIED WOODY, and they are still married after 30 years. She was not his stepdaughter she was Mia Farrows stepdaughter.
Video goes on to report on far more career-shaping conflicts Baez had with colleagues in the music world. Clash with Allen seemed overblown by comparison.
Every "criticism" mentioned in this is a compliment as far as I am concerned. Who wants to die knowing they did what they were told and made everyone that supposedly mattered happy?
My sentiments exactly! Joan is a true artist and a noble spirit. She's as true to herself as Woody Allen and Bob Dylan are. So she ruffled some feathers along the way. I'm certain Allen and Dylan and other similarly significant artists have too. Big deal. Moreover, I'm quite sure she had to take more crap being an assertive female than her male contemporaries did. Celebrate the joy she brings. I'd recommend the Joan Baez documentary that came out last year to anyone who may care about excellent, well presented insights into this magnificent woman. It's called Joan Baez: I Am a Noise. 👍
It is reported that Joni Mitchell was also so uncompromising in her artistic vision that many talented collaborators and friends gave up. Very talented woman but areal PIA. Sounds like Baez was similar. But who can criticize Joni’s artistry? She’s a cut above
AGREED. Joni Mitchel is a douchebag as Mia Farrow is as Joan Baez is also. Woody did NOTHING wrong and is still married to Soon Yi who married him when she was 21 and they are still married 30 years later. God bless Woody.
I love Joan Baez even more for her commitment to social justice and peace than her inestimably great talent as a performer. Woody Allen may be right about her being "difficult to work with," but isn't that like the pot calling the kettle cast iron? I respect Woody much more for his unwavering commitment to his artistic vision and the art and craft of filmmaking than for his opinions about other artists' personalities. I recently saw Judy Collins in concert. She is an even better performer today than when I saw her five years ago, and she spoke kindly of Joan Baez during both concerts. Joan and Judy may have been rivals rather than friends in the 1960s and 1970s, but they're not exactly enemies of one another. These great women are equally committed to progressive politics and their art. That their respective interests in musical genres are not exactly the same does not bother me one bit. Have a great day, everyone. Peace.
Baez in a Woody Allen comedy? A classic movie btw...maybe that would have been the joke, someone so serious all the time doing Woodys type of humor. If they were thinking of her in Diane Keatons role I think they dodged a bullet there.
Thinking of Annie Hall, Manhattan, and most of the '70s and 80s comedies, Allen would often have his character briefly date the wrong person for him. I'd assume Baez caught on that she was to play some variety of a dreary, political zealot and wanted no part of it.
I'm a fan of both, and what I know of them seems like it could be an honest video. It did not seem harsh, mean, or demeaning criticisms. I've heard her make similar criticisms of herself. Don't worry she's still a hero
Baez always irritated me. She irritated Bob Dylan during the filming of "Don't Look Back" (1964) in which she is edited out before the end of the film. Judy Collins captured my heart with her "In My Life".
I love the way this videomaker tries to make it seem like speaking out against the Viet Nam war was somehow a failing on Joan Baez' part. The rest of this video is just a random collection of the usual tiffs and feuds anyone who makes a difference will run into. Video = Mess.
Al Capp's star faded fast after it came out he was groping women wholesale during his speaking tours of colleges. Today he's recognized as the Grandfather Of The Anti-Groping Movement.
10 minutes of exploring how many ways one can say, that someone is stubborn and difficult? Honestly, I find your previous assumption, far more succinct and plausible. Baez just thought she wanted the same man that millions of women thought they wanted. A tale that far predates 'rock stars.' A tale of kings, of all kinds.
GOD BLESS WOODY ALLEN! Telling it like it is. Woody Allen was falsely accused of child abuse, was thoroughly investigated and cleared! Mia Farrow MADE UP THE STORY. As for Woody marrying his stepdaughter, that wouldn't even be a crime IF she was his stepdaughter which she was NOT. She was Mia Farrows step daughter and she was a 21 year old ADULT when she married Woody and UNLIKE most marriages SHE'S STILL MARRIED TO HIM after 30 years. God bless Woody!
woody met soon yi, in 1980. she was born around 1970, making her 10 years old, when they met. the fact that he came out with their relationship, at 21, does not negate the fact they were together when she was a child, nor answer the question as to when the relationship actually begin. his judgement is questionable, just as a doctor or teacher, getting involved with a patient, or student, would be.
@@Ausgar-yc1yl Don't be an idiot playing with semantics. Soon is Mia's adopted daughter, NOT Woody's stepdaughter. STOP thinking like a menopausal w0e--MAN
I think it is ironic that Woody Allen, the pervert, had issues with Joan Baez! I am a conservative Republican, but I totally empathize with Joan Baez and the struggles that she faced, especially with Bob Dylan! Yes, she was principled with views that I disagreed with at the time, but she had the courage of her convictions. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were definitely her contemporaries and I liked their music more than hers. But Joan Baez has a voice with richness. “Diamonds and Rust” is an iconic song that I only discovered in the last 10 years!
In defense if Joan Baez…. you had to be there (in the 1960s). She was a voice (among many)… a conscience of a whole group, a whole generation. She spoke for many, many people …. just as Donald Trump does now. Please give it up for any failings she (they) might have. We all could make improvements in our own lives.
You're comparing Joan Baez to Trump? One sings We Shall Overcome and the other takes out ads in newspapers trying to get the death penalty applied to innocent black kids.
@@ford289cid7 He must be a Trumper. Trump doesn't represent me in any way ,shape or form, I detest him and those who support him. I am an admirer of the work of Joan Baez, she spoke for us because she cared for us. Trump speaks at us, and doesn't give a whole damn about us.
Woody Allen is a creep, and let's stop there--future will tell. Good for you, Joan Baez, that you refused to collaborate with him. Also, kudos to your integrity throughout the years. Admirable. You have made a difference whether or not you think so.

Apparently both Baez and Mitchell got along well. Mitchell even did a duet with Baez on Diamonds and Rust "Dida".

cartoonist Al Capp (lil abner) used to lampoon Joan ...called her Joanie Phony but who remembers him now!
Al Capp's star faded fast after it came out he was groping women wholesale during his speaking tours of colleges. Today he's recognized as the Grandfather Of The Anti-Groping Movement.
I'd say both are remembered within their worlds (comics and folk music), and neither name is familiar to anyone under 40.
Woody is a film genius and Joan is a folk music genius.Let each dominate in their own field.
Thanks for setting the record straight. I had always thought Bob had simply told her to 'folk off!' as he plugged in and went electric!

They were both kind of off
Just watch the first five minutes or so. After that it is just a repeat more or less.
Yes he sounds very resented, Jajaja
And which one married their daughter?
Woody did NOT marry any daughter of his. Try again.
First I’ve heard of all this stuff very surprised she was Allen’s first choice for the female lead in that great film⚛❤

Is this a real person reading the script.there were at least 4 different pronounciations of Baez.so I do wonder ?!
Joan's talent and contributions will long out live this cheap hit piece.
She just got lucky to be Dylan's obsession, even now!
Another hit job on liberal icons using half-baked argumentation--nicely sharp propaganda, though.
