    Just got my 2021 Legacy Touring XT yesterday. Its not perfect, but it does a couple of critical things just right. First and foremost, I can fit in it perfectly. I'm 6'3" with long legs and the thigh extension and power seats let me get completely comfortable - more so than any car I've ever been in. The exterior is kind of plain for a $36,000 car, but the interior is gorgeous, the Harmon - Kardon stereo is awesome and the safety suite is about as complete as it can be. Add in AWD, quiet ride and 18.5 gallon gas tank and its going to be the perfect road trip cruiser. Oh, and in this era of chip shortages and vehicle shortages I was still able to get a good deal below MSRP because everyone wants an SUV or truck, not a midsize sedan.

    I absolutely loved my 98 Impreza RS 2.5. Had it for 14 years from new and it never ever broke down and gave me smiles every time I drove it. Performed amazing in the snow of Pennsylvania and was a joy to own. Nowadays I’m totally turned off by anything CVT. I have two friends with Subarus with the CVT and one is on his second transmission and the other just suffered a catastrophic failure of his. I think they rob the vehicle of any sort of fun and performance and have serious reliability issues. I think an 8spd automatic and a 6MT would completely transform these cars imo

    I agree that Subaru has replaced Volvo as the solidity and safety brand. They both have this image of being for people who are risk averse. Affordability and financial responsibility is another aspect that appeals to this type of buyer and that’s why Subaru is winning.

    What the reviewers don't understand is that the subaru CVT actually learns the drivers tendencies. The CVT's on subarus are some of the best out there. If you want to race this car, and this car can run with the wrx on a straight, you use the paddle shifters. Consumers rate the Legacy a 5/5 in ride quality, 4/5 for cabin noise, 4/5 in front-seat comfort, 4/5 rear seat comfort, 4/5 in interior fit and finish, and 4/5 in trunk and cargo space in Torque News mag. Honda nor Mazda is better interior wise. Legacy is also quieter than those cars.

    Guys summing your review hits the nail right on the head and that is why Subaru is so successful here in this country. Subaru sells legacy and outback for family’s and the majority of them only care about safety. You want fun and speed then get an STI. We chose the legacy because of things like, reverse automatic braking, steering wheel responsive headlights, rear ventilated disc, heated steering wheel and AWD. None of which available on the Accord. Oh and you can only get AWD on Altima and Camry’s base engines and have to pay extra. That’s called settle and I don’t want to settle. CVT only acts like a CVT under harsh acceleration, driving civilized and you won’t know it a CVT. I do agree with you on one thing though, yes some of the safety system are a bit aggressive for sure. Thanks for the review but we can agree to disagree.

    Excellent points about if you like to drive, you don't want interference from a gas mileage hunting CVT and safety systems. Does the the car's menu let you temporarily turn off those imposing systems? If I decide to buy another Subaru, the sale's person should demonstrate how to turn them off. My current Subaru Impressa's cruise control broke when I used it too much to control freeway speed. But now I'm more aware and a more engaged driver. My Subaru's all wheel drive really shines in a snowstorm so would prefer it in my next car. I'm looking at possibly a Toyota or Honda all wheel drive sedan to give me the same safe handling as the Impreza.

    Some thoughts after buying my 2022 XT two months ago:
    - The tranny "wobbles" in 15mph school zones. Maybe it will "learn" over time?
    - I always disable the auto-stop when starting the car. I drive very little being retired and find it annoying. Doesn't save me much if I'm not commuting every day.
    - It has a "full" LED package, but still has incandescent bulbs in the rear passenger seat dome and in the trunk. Swapped them out immediately.

    The other cars mentioned are sort of direct competitors - none offer AWD except for (now) the Toyota Camry - and only with the four cylinder engine making 200 hp. For those of us in New England who live on mountains and it snows, none are options for us but this car and the Camry. The problem with Subaru now they don't mention is the CVT under heavy loads (up a mountain, in snow). To keep the CVT torque converter from blowing out from overheating like it initially did, it stops operating which means you don't get up the mountain, or get home, in heavy snow. Something these guys would not know driving on the highway in a warm environment. Fun is not a primary concern. Getting home is.

    In response to the comments about the 4 second delay on the throttle - in a recent Issimi podcast, Jason Cammisa explained that it's due to a drive by noise test . For the test, the car starts at a specified speed, accelerates at full throttle until it passes the second sound sensor, some distance down the road, adn the noise level must be below required amount.
    A lot of good sounding cars are hamstrung by this, because the automaker has to program in a literal delay on response to throttle input to pass this test. One such car is the Porsche GT4, which doesn't switch open the exhaust to loud mode until 3750 RPM; it finishes the test at 3700 RPM.
    He said that even a Tesla Model S failed originally because it accelerates so fast that tires alone were over the limit.

      ...what? Can you point me to this "noise" test? Who imposes it, USDOT? Is it part of the US car federalization process (which is in the $40M range)? When did this "noise" test get introduced? Is it a only a CA thing?

    Would the roads be more safe or less safe w/o these types of safety systems? I like my backup camera, but can do w/o the other gizmos. On I75 in SW OH, I see car parts littering the shoulders from where accidents happened. So until ppl can stop having accidents, safety systems are going to increase and be more intrusive until ppl are no longer in control (which could be the case now...). I blame watching a cell phone while driving as the primary culprit for these accidents.

    After test driving a base model 2020 Legacy, I see where they were trying to get, but I feel the CVT wasn't as well done as it could be; like it needed some more tuning. Even in the 2.5i models, I still had to dig for acceleration and even then, I didn't feel much faster than a 1997 Toyota RAV4. As far as the suspension went, it felt very nice over broken pavement, but just a tad wallowy. Overall I found it a decent car, but I was turned off by just how artificial it was. Having said that, it does have a pretty good AWD system in every trim, highest HP (with top engine choice, but falls a bit short on torque vs others) and may be the best value out of all of them. @@catrinajohns9774 hi Catrina, nice to meet you, I owned the 2021 legacy Touring XT for more than one month now and all you mentioned will match your expectations; the Mazda is like 1 or 2 decibel quieter than the Legacy but it is not a deal breaking difference; the drive on the Legacy is very smooth and precise, breaking is extremely responsive and efficient and suspensions are just amazing on any kind of bumps and make everything feeling so cushioned and comfy. The seats? You want to fall asleep on those seats all the times you get in the car, there is nothing more soft touch and roomy than those seats and the 2021 is even more roomy than the 2020 beating also accord and others; in the trunk you can even manage to fit a mountain bike which it is impossible to accomplish in any other sedan in the market. When I came home from the dealership and I parked next to my wife Altima I noticed that the Altima all of a sudden looked like a little kitty; this Legacy has the height of a compact suv and the length of a wagon and still the semiautomatic side mirrors and the front and back cameras make parking extremely easy

      Also despite the size it is very easy to park thanks to 1 front (most of other sedans don’t have one) and 1 back camera and when you backup the side mirrors automatically look down the curb and if it is dark 2 leds will illuminate the curb while you park so you don’t scratch the rims while parking

      Im currently looking, down to top trim level of Accord, or Camry.. possibly the K5, what is it about the Camry infotainment system you dont like?

    • @jeffreyfurtado3681
      @jeffreyfurtado3681 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      203 to 206 hp depending on which 4cyl trim is decent on the Camry. People just think a turbo is better because you get some boost to make it seem faster. In this class MPG is a selling point and reliability. Toyota does need to improve info system.

    Looked so many Subaru reviews on TH-cam, there are 2 camps of experts now. 1.) We hate CVT but if I have to have one, Subaru is one of the best or 2.) We hate CVT and Subaru is very bad... Go figure ;)

    Im pretty sure the reviewers are complaining about "fun" too much. They are nagging about a rally feel...get a WRX? The CVT learns driver traits, so takes some time to accommodate.

    That cvt sounds almost as bad as the 1.5T chevy malibu's. Lag³, because cvt+torque converter+small turbo engine. On top of that the cvt doesn't know what to do if it's not cruising.
    I've found turbo Subarus to be entertaining but even with a manual, driving smooth is tough. The throttle response is all over.

    • @thirdpedalnirvana
      @thirdpedalnirvana 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At least manual control makes sense on the Subaru. It wasn't very good on the malibu. Too many ratios, I think 8. Unsatisfying buttons on gear sitck. About 1.5 second from button press to ratio engagement.
