      How’s the road noise at highway speeds?

    • @Piggus
      @Piggus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@marktepper3440 I don't have much to compare it to, but it seems perfectly fine unless you're going 80+ all the time, then you might notice some wind noise. I usually have music on and I never really notice it or road noise unless the road is awful or I'm going over 80. The car soaks up bumps and bad roads extremely well while remaining very agile for something with so much ground clearance. I've heard it's a bit noisy compared to something like the Forester, and that makes sense since it felt a bit more bulked up when I drove one. But for my needs, perfectly fine and still the most solid-feeling car I've ever driven regularly.

    Haha I’ve been looking at these for the last six months, and you totally nailed it for me. Camping and paddling, light off roading, live in a snowy climate, extremely practical person who hauls teenage kids and muddy hiking gear. If people were appliances, I would be a counter top air fryer/convection/toaster oven/broiler/microwave/warming plate combo unit. And I want a car to match me. Perfect!

      @bananaboat805 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just nailed everything I'm looking for in a car. I was debating between this and the new civic hatch which looks audi-esque inside. But as soon as I test drove this, I was like...this is me. I like analog spedometers and tachometers, I like cranking the parking brake. It can do everything the way I want to do things. I don't like being careful with my stuff. I have an '05 corolla which I've taken through the woods, snow and strapped junk to the top even though I prob wasn't supposed to. A car is a tool to me, not a symbol. This is what I want.

    I've has my eyes on this, been putting away money, and researching endlessly over the last 6 months and am one month away from pulling the trigger. This car just has everything I want and nothing I don't. I have several swiss army knives, and I think it is the same mentality that draws me to this car so much. Going straight up for the plasma yellow too. Also, yes your comments on the "appliance mentality" is dead on for why I am buying this. I've owned a 94 tempo and a 2003 taurus (the latter for the last 12 years) so no, "fun" is not on my list lol

  • @dcaudwell

    You found fun at the end there! Spontaneous laughter on film!
    Also, I think you might be underestimating the practicality and capability of the Crosstrek for those actually living in remote/rural/mountain areas where this can actually cope with miles of rutted dirt roads better than any other affordable crossover . In the CX30, which I love and which I prefer in every other respect, you'd lose your fillings within the first mile!

    I bought one of these yesterday. Is it strange that I watch review videos after I make a purchase?
    Anyway, I was telling my wife that the car is "reassuringly boring, but in a good way". Also, that this is the first car purchase I didn't get excited about, as if I bought a really nice blender. Of course, I told her that it seems like "it does everything well, but nothing particularly great".
    I'd also like to mention that mine is the perfect shade of gray to suit my personality.
    Also, I was curious where your test drive took place. Reminds me of Wyoming.

      The Crosstrek Sport or other trim? The more you drive it, the more you like it. I’ve had mine for 3 weeks and 1200 miles. This is opposite the CX-30 where you really like it at first and then you figure out all the things it doesn’t do well. Reason why this got a 84 score and the piece of crap CX-30 got 75.

    This crosstrek is bringing back SENSIBILITY to consumer. One is enough. Enough is good. Function over form. Function over style. Which is the best kind of proposed value in this age of materialism and excess consumption. This one fits those who walk their talk.

    The best review of the 2021 Crosstrek Sport/Outdoor. Its not a sports car despite the name but refers to outdoor lifestyle activities like hiking, mtn biking, kayaking etc. Subaru has been making CVTs longer than any other company remember the 87' Justy? so its as good as it gets when it comes to CVTs. A turbo would drive the cost up to Outback XT territory so that would probably be wishful thinking.

    I ordered a Crosstrek yesterday. I surf maybe 100x per year and drive on the beach to get to my spot. My RWD Sequoia got stuck a few times last year, and several other times I had to find a place to park off the beach because the beach was too rutted and soft and I knew I would get stuck for sure if I tried..
    The Crosstrek has a low roof which will be easy to load boards on, good ground clearance and AWD to get me to my spots, and it's cheap and fuel efficient. I couldn't find a car that could beat all these things at any price.
    I think the people buying Crosstreks are outdoor people first. I'm sure some people buy this car so they can look outdoorsy, but I don't think it's the norm.

The steering is excellent and responsive and it still lets you throw it around a little. I would also argue that the additional ground clearance and comfort being an SUV makes it worth it.

    FYI…. The Crosstrek is the largest selling Subaru in North America… this is our second Crosstrek we bought the Outdoor model in Canada ..the new motor was the only thing that needed fixing. We love the washable interior and it’s amazing in a Canadian winter.
    BTW..it doesn’t need a turbo …just like the BRZ doesn’t.. it has plenty of power for every thing we do… seems you all need more power for what exactly.??
    The turbo would require so many mods…can you say full redesign required and then add 5k to the price ….not what Subaru was aiming for with the Crosstrek….

    I have a 2013 Impreza sport with 148 horsepower. There are a couple of issues I have with the car, like excessive oil consumption. But never once have I felt the car was under-powered. This is coming from someone with a heavy foot, too. It can easily merge on the highway, pass whomever I want and whenever I want, and it's also first off the line at every stoplight. If you're trying to climb a mountain, the car might theoretically complain, sure. The few mountains I've climbed since 2013 in the car, though, have been easily manageable. All this to say two things: A 2021 has to have improved in the power department, and based on the non-issue before and the improvement on the non-issue, people need to stop saying these cars are under-powered because they simply are not. A more real life issue, if you'd like something to complain about, is oil consumption.

    Glad to see they finally gave the Crosstrek more power. As for the comparison with the CX-30, I'm sure the Mazda has a nicer interior, but a co-worker recently was given a CX-30 while her 2011 Mazda 6 was in for service, and she said that the ride was too firm and the visibility was not as good in the CX-30 as her Mazda 6. The CX-30 does have rather high door panels and rear hatch, which reduces the amount of glass and therefore visibility from inside.

    I was this close to buying the Cross trek. It’s the almost perfect vehicle for my teenage sons to drive. Enough power, but not too much, roomy with great visibility. Excellent safety features with the iSight being in the windshield over the grill, especially in poor weather. And, if you get into a fender bender, your $$ is lower since the safety gear is in the windshield. All the plastic cladding is actually helpful for teenagers who are wont to have minor fender benders and rub stuff in parking lots! Totally agree on the CVT. In auto made, it’s a rubber band. Need to put in manual. Love the manual parking break! BUT, in the end, we wanted to get a PHEV. Unfortunately, in VA where we live they don’t sell the PHEV version...so, went with the Kia Niro PHEV with a DCT and 26 miles of EV range. Love it, but this car is excellent! My ONE grip with Subarus is the seat adjustability. The thigh supports cannot tilt enough to make me comfortable. The sports seats are closer than most of their lineup, but still not enough for me.

    The main reason they don't make a turbo crosstrek is because they don't have to. They are already selling them faster than they can build them. A turbo would be pointless to an already-strained production demand. They are saving it in their back pocket for when sales start to fall off to breath more life into the platform.

Anyway, your video convinced me that the larger engine version is the way to go. At least it can get out of its own way now. I really like the Sport option. I'm 70 years old and recently retired. Fast is not as important to me as it was in my youth. As for sporty, my 77 MGB handles that fairly well even though it is slow compared to modern sports cars, but I can fix most anything on it. I really enjoy your videos and you answered all the questions I had about the CrossTrek and its plusses and minuses. People always talk about the outdoorsy camping lifestyle when talking about the Crosstrek (as well as the Forester and Outback). There is another segment that I think is overlooked for this type of vehicle at this price. Young people in the trades. The AWD and 8.7 inches of ground clearance would come in real handy at the job sites. No, you're not tossing 20 sheets of plywood in the back, but the youngsters aren't typically the ones brining the supplies. They just need their tools. What kid just out of trade school is able to dump almost 40 grand on the bone stock base level F-150? There are so few vehicles accessible to young people in the trades. I think that has been somewhat addressed in the recently released Maverick and Santa Cruz, but I am surprised nobody ever mentions these lifted hatchbacks in that space. All wheel drive, high ground clearance, (8.7 vs the Maverick 8.6) Easy to clean interior (on the sport trim). The Crosstrek seems like a viable option for them.

    You couldn’t be more wrong. The CVT works just fine and it’s not too loud. In fact it’s low levels of road and wind noise. Your review is totally opposite of Consumers Reports and other reviewers. The CX-30 has a loud engine, a claustrophobic interior that’s not usable and a cheap independent rear suspension that’s a twist beam set up that ensures you feel every bump in the road. I tested both of them and purchased the Subaru. Good luck finding one, they are flying off the dealer lots. That being said, if you want a CX-30, the Mexican assembly plant is creating plenty of supply and they aren’t flying of the dealer lots because off the above mentioned shortcomings.

      You mentioned some of it but also degraded it with the comparison with the CX-30 without mentioning it’s shortcomings. The comparison should be with the CX-5. The Subaru only has 4 cubic feet less room than that model.

      The cx30 comparison is apt because the cx30 is also a hatchback with a lift like the crosstrek. The CX5 is firmly in the CUV category. However we have also reviewed it next to the CX5 for TV and now on our other youtube channel. (It was the less powerful older model, but like you we found the CX5 another interesting competitor). @@anonymous00117 You might be right. "Car enthusiasts" - a group that I consider myself a part of - are a very small subset of potential buyers. We are often unable to afford new cars, especially ones with turbos and high performance because development of those cars is big money.
      My wife mostly hates driving, but does it because it's the easiest way to get around. I've been learning what she likes in cars, things like comfort, style, branding, premium feel and/or reputation, etc - as she represents a more typical buyer. Understanding that, and seeing what's selling, I think that cheap sports cars are a dying category. And I think it sucks.
      So I may be somewhat - or completely - naively optimistic about potential sales numbers of cars I think are cool. But when I see people dumping $40-50k on a Wrangler, and gobbling up CUVs and "small" SUVs, I think a lifted-hatch-dubbed-CUV with decent power would sell decently well in the current marketplace. Subaru already has said turbo motor in the WRX, and has a manual trans in the STi, so It would be relatively low risk to offer those as options.

    Only thing that would stop me from considering a Crosstrek is that it doesn't have Dual Climate Zone. For a couple; thats a relationship saver where myself; perfers the cold artic air vs the girlfriend who prefers the seventh layer of hell hot air.
    I would agree; most SUV/Crossover owners believe they need such a large vehicle with off roading capabilities when in reality, they most off roading they'll do is the speed bumps at a shopping mall and grabbing groceries. I'm in school where you buy the right tool for the right job. You want a daily commuter that hauls you and your two kids, get a car/sedan/hatchback and pick your options that suit you. Drives me nuts when I'm driving and I'm cut off by a Karen driving by herself; with a coffee in one hand, cell phone in the other and playing a balancing act with the steering wheel all while wearing sunglasses and chitchatting away not paying attention to the road. In my area of New England; I see so many oversized SUVs with people that don't use them for what they are meant for. My opinion, you got a large family, get a mini-van. You go off the beaten trail on weekends, get a hatchback/suv/crossover/truck with off roading capabilities. Yeah, there is snowfall, but how often is AWD really used when your backing out of your driveway or going to work. Most car people will tell you that a set of snowtires will out perform an AWD car with all seasons anyday which is what most common commuters will have on their AWD suvs is all season tires. Without realizing down the road if they plan on keeping these cars, that the maintenance of the AWD is going to get expensive vs FWD car with better tires. Again, the point at the end of the day is "right tool for the right job".
    At end of the day the Crosstrek is still a good "Do it all" type of car, the average daily commuter will not care about horsepower 0-60 times; forget Turbos; especially on CVTs; Turbos on Subaru's have a bad track record. They care about getting to places from point a to point b without hassle. I've driven a Crosstrek for a good amount of time and I feel the windnoise on the highway is below average and how it handles on broken pavement kills my back. But beyond that, its a good car for the average millennial soccer mom.
