- Today I am teaching you how to draw a face with a template and reference to create art journal variety. This face drawing tutorial is in a whole new video series (this is video 2) that will show you, step by step, my best drawing faces tips and techniques, the benefits of drawing from a reference, and goes along with my latest videos teaching you the best art journal techniques for beginners. Overall, these face drawing techniques teach you how to use a reference WITH your template to help you make each face look different. So really, this face drawing tutorial series is great for art journal beginners and advanced mixed media artists as well, who may be looking to diversifying their work! Lastly, I go over allllllll the wheres and whys and how to shade a faces as well, using my trusty foam head as the perfect model 😂

I LOVED doing this! Thank you so much Karen! It's been more than 20 years since I drew a face and I was terrified just to think about giving it a try but I had so much fun ....and struggle! lol You should have seen me have serious conversations my stubborn pencils!...And my boyfriend asking me '' Who are you talking to???" lollll . But I didn't give up and in the end I love the result I got and I'm so looking forward to the next video!

I did it. I thought I was doing great before starting the video by having a background already and tracing the template on there. And then I found out everything was gonna be changed. And unbeknownst to me, my background was way way way way way too dark. Now I know leave the center much much much lighter. But all in all, I think I was able to save her. Thanking God for gesso. Thank you so very much for this wonderful wonderful lesson. I’m gonna have to check out awesome art school. Thank you again! You have a marvelous amazing heart of a teacher.

thanks Karen for another fun and inspiring lesson. You explain every step so well and i love how you incorporate laughter and fun into the process ... thats why we love making art because its fun to do!!!! As kids we just scribbled and had fun without being judgy of the outcome ... you help me feel like that again and not get hung up on whether my art looks good. If i stuff something up i can just laugh at my goof and gesso over it or turn the page and start again ,... easy peasy!!!! 😃😘

Loved this...thanks so much for doing a graphite journal page. It’s a great way for a scary cat like me to get started. I was going to use a wire bound watercolor book for my journal, but I think I should get the Strathmore one. That way if I want to take a spread across two pages there won’t be wire in the center.

That's soooo awesome Jo-Anne!!! You sure can! I am using some watercolor markers and some gesso and some Washi Tape. In lieu of the watercolor markers you can use ANY watersoluble ANYTHING in their place (pencils, crayons, pencils, anything that reacts with water) and an adventurous spirit!! I'll be ready for you in class on Friday!! Woot!

I'm looking forward to trying the template I made out in my altered music book art journal. I love the look of graphite over gesso. I mix my gesso, half white and half clear so I can give the paper in my altered books more substance. I usually collage first but not always with this technique. Looking forward to changing other features of the face.

Thank you for the tutorial … I KNOW you know what you’re doing, but for others, when sketching, I love using a soft make up brush from the dollar store to brush away the eraser ‘nubbins’ so I don’t smear
