      @@blbl4685@Karen Campbell Mixed Media The used ones are better since they are softer and more pliable. You may need extra matte medium and drying time. You can smooth it out or crunch it up for extra texture. Have fun experimenting!

      I love to use wallpaper if I can get some, nice struktur or colors or both. Good old news paper works fine as well I love the different writings in different newspapers, my heart is jumping when I can grip foreign ones. Envelopes have often a great inside or I use the ones that come with birthday cards. They make a great,coloful backround as well, but they are a bit thik. I soke them in water sometimes to make them a bit softer, but than you have to wait longer before it is dry. Sometimes I like to have really struktured backrounds than I use egg boxes (I really don't know the english word, lol google says egg cardboard sounds wrong to me) I make a kind of paper maschee (just soak it in water ad a little wallpaper glue) . And I like to reuse my old drwaings or sketshes or skribbelings.

    *here's an idea that i personally use...i'll buy several of these scrapbooking collections when i find them on sale and then have them all cut en mass to a 2.5"X3.5" for the tiny playing card scale that i enjoy messing about with...this produces hundreds of bits to play with and combine...i also will take several of these pieces then rip them in various shapes and then burn the edges...this number of combinations is virtually limitless...i also have black or brown card stock cut to the same dimensions to reinforce the cards that i produce...if i'm using only high quality playing cards i soak them in water to separate the front and the back from each other then place a piece of card stock to reinforce the card for display and preservation...cheaper inexpensive throw away cards just fall apart if you do this so avoid them*

      @scottmantooth8785 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@carlagrayson1810 *hello Carla....appreciate your interest in playing card collage and my creative process...to answer your first question as to where i get the scrapbooking paper collections cut i do so locally at a office supply store that i've been doing business with for decades (seriously)...they don't actually do it there but have a contact which is also locally based that does it and typically the turn around is very quick..also very reasonably priced and more so depending on the volume being cut which is why having several scrap-booking sets cut at the same time is the better deal...i also ask for the trim to be saved since the pieces might be small but still useful...as to knowing card quality that depends on the age of the card, the printing house and where you buy them...places that sell them for a dollar a deck can be assured to be really cheap quality and not really suitable for archival quality work...good quality cards just handle and and have a better tactile feel to them...the tricky part is that these cards usually have a very thin plastic coating to them that makes them easier to shuffle and can make adhering images to them difficult if the wrong adhesive is used...avoid stick glue as it is pretty much useless and as a previous collaborator mentioned it's very boogery....you want to use something with a neutral ph such as the type used in bookbinding preferably... although i will admit that i have used wood glue thinned down slightly form time to time when i had nothing else but this would be only for pieces i had no intention of ever selling and only to keep in practice ...on the topic of why i divide the cards it's to reinforce them...this can also be tricky since older cards are just cardboard stock and will denigrate when exposed to water in which case i simply glue one card to the back of another if i have matching or nearly matching decks...i also do at times decorate the backs of the cards especially if it is going to be a set or themed series... there are extremely talented artist on DeviantArt (my user name is scottman2th...do a google and you'll find my gallery) who do this and have been active in this field for much longer than i have...there are many, many groups there that specialize in card collage are are happy to offer guidance and even collaborations if interested which is from my experience a lot of fun...in my case when doing collage at this scale it's about spontaneity....you'll see or find something that will instantly grab your attention that says "pick me" and that will lead to the next image...i've made card collage from bits of trash i've found in parking lots (seriously) or form discarded magazines...the key to this is to always look for things with an eye that sees things in pieces rather than as whole...you'll soon be able rearrange all the bits in your mind almost on an instinctual level and by reflex ... you'll probably want to keep an envelope or three with you to stash all the bits you find while out and about...i also have a filing system for the random images i find but cannot immediately use...this helps a lot during the brain storming process...another very good resource for images would be the archival collections found in Dover Publication books....that is another rabbit hole to scamper down whenever you feel like you want a long and twisting tangent to follow...i've collected many books over the years and have used and combined many images from them...i bought most of them from the local art store (Jerry's Artarama) but you can also find really good deals on abebooks and those tend to be very good quality used books but at the same time really cheap to obtain...hope this long and rambling answer to your query is helpful in some way...again thanks for the interest and have an excellent day*

    Hullo, darling! Great video! I wish I had an old phone book. So angry I threw them all away when I moved. Grrrr. LOVE the Inverness piece! As you might recall (from a long time ago comment, LOL) that's where I am from! 😊I remember that piece from one of your first vids that I ever saw. It inspired me so much that I did a huge canvas with a similar idea. LOVE it! Thank you so much for that, my dear. i am planning to go home this year for Christmas. Can't wait. I've been very homesick since quarantine and when the Queen passed, it got so much sharper. I shall raise a glass to you while there, darling! I've a wee house outside of Inverness and I haven't seen it in person for 3 years. So excited. Thank you again for this video. Gave me some new inspiration! Love you, your spirit, enthusiasm and art. I reluctantly accepted an unusual commission for a lampshade, made using a fabric lamp shade and collage. My friend had seen the one I made for myself, using pages of old books that I agedvyaibg a bucket of water and a can of a darkish gold spray paint. I ripped the edges of each page so it was kind of decked and the quickly disappearing gold pain sprayed onto the water clung to the edges perfectly. It was the collages part that I fell in love with. So the one I did for my friend needed to be for him personally A lyrics of his davieite tunes, small but meaningful drawings, quotes that were words he lived by, etc. I realised I’d have to do something redically different. Since everything was custom for my close friend I decided to do everything by hand. I used a good paper but not too thick, wanted it to lie down flat. It took many hours, writing in longhand, sometimes calligraphy, drawing the musical notes from song sheets, but I loved every minute of it. It turned out to be a gift of love. He insisted I be paid but I only accepted what I had spent in supplies bc how can you charge circa gift of love? Lol But I wound up making about seven of these lampshades, each different but all were collages to the maximum! I ended up using everything from toilet tissue to fabric to small leaves. The things that can be used for collage are endless - just as the ideas that spring up for collage uses is endless. Just because I wanted a certain looking lampshade, I ended up making a tidy sum of money when folks like my weird ideas. That’s the thing, Karen, artists are not normal people generally speaking. We seem to be programmed differently or perhaps we are simply not programmed at all. I swear, my attorney daughter has never introduced me to anyone without adding, in a quieter tone, “…she’s an artist, you know artists are kind of weird…”. She and I have not a thing in common other than we are both female. LOL
