- After many requests, here is the other part of Dylan's appearance at WTTW-TV Studios in Chicago on September 10, 1975. This particular video is very special because most other versions you will hear have overdubbed lines on verses 2, 4, 7, and 10. Here is the explanation: This performance was recorded about a month after the first version of "Hurricane" was recorded (find this early version here: • Bob Dylan - Hurricane ... ). This was about to be released as a single when Columbia's lawyers blocked it from release, citing worries about lines regarding Arthur Dexter Bradley and Alfred Bello, the two main witnesses, being false and grounds for defamation lawsuits. This all happened after this performance, though, so Dylan was still singing his original lyrics. The first broadcast of this concert had the original lyrics, which is what you hear here, but in the second broadcast the following year, controversial lines were overdubbed with the "safe" album version. He played two songs after this one: "Oh, Sister" (watch it here: • Bob Dylan - Oh, Sister... ) and "Simple Twist of Fate" (watch it here: watch/?v=161.... It's a shame that Dylan's channel doesn't upload good quality versions of this entire concert.
In my opinion, this is the definitive live version of Hurricane; It's so good that I've found myself watching this performance over and over again, and I have "music ADHD" (the habit of skipping songs I've heard after the first verse). I edited this video together using three sources: 1. An original, complete VHS tape is used in the beginning as the host and John Hammond introduce Dylan, 2. A higher-quality transfer I obtained from a bootleg DVD is used for the footage of Dylan's actual performance, and 3. A soundboard audiotape is overdubbed to footage.
This was recorded for the PBS special, "The World of John Hammond", which celebrated the influence and success of legendary talent scout and producer John Hammond; he can be seen at 2:18 grooving along to Dylan's performance. Taping took place at WTTW-TV Studios in Chicago on September 10, 1975, and also included "Hurricane" and "Simple Twist of Fate". This recording was subsequently broadcast that December, and then once more the following year.
Legends such as Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson were also featured on this show. Whereas they accepted PBS's invitation months in advance, Dylan confirmed just two days prior, as is typical! He recruited some of the musicians who played on his recently completed album, "Desire": Scarlet Rivera (violin), Howie Wyeth (drums), and Rob Stoner (Bass & Backup vocals). This band eventually became the core of Dylan's set on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour, which would start touring the next month. So, one could argue that this is the earliest live performance of the Rolling Thunder Revue. The raw, whispy sound that this four-piece band makes is really incredible, so I wish we had more recordings like this.
Interestingly, when Dylan recruited these musicians, he only told them that they were doing a gig in Chicago, mentioning nothing about being broadcasted on a major television station with Columbia executives in the audience, and not to mention John Hammond himself. Here is a fascinating anecdote from Rivera:
"Bob asked me and the trio of Rob and Howie to join him in Chicago for the tribute to John Hammond Sr, who changed the course of music by his vision and courage to sign many greats, including Bob Dylan, to CBS. This was another First. I had never performed on live TV and now it was going to be in front of every senior executive of CBS and a viewing audience of millions! I am amazed still that Bob had confidence in me to pull this extremely important concert off without failing on live TV, especially as this show was before a single live concert to support Desire. I would also perform "A Simple Twist of Fate" with him, and I had only rehearsed it that afternoon once backstage. Appreciating the song and playing it live with the man himself are two very different things! I was incredibly tense and taut, but I indeed pulled it off, and it is my all-time favorite video of playing live with him."

My dad used to listen to Bob Dylan. On weekends my Dad would play Bob Dylan on the huge console stereo that was nested in the corner of our living groom. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter was freed by Canadian activists and lawyers after working hard to find the truth. Carter died in Toronto, Canada. Hope his soul rests in peace.

I agree, it's one of the most amazing songs ever written, but there are people online who argue persuasively that Rubin was guilty...very guilty, and Bob got it wrong. Rubin was tried twice and convicted each time. The third time, many years later, he was freed, but not exonerated, by the most liberal judge in the state......Check it out for yourself.....But hey, I would want Bob to write a song about me if I was convicted, falsely or other wise.....

Well he wrote the lines so they mean something to him so the words come natural. And he doesnt phrase it the same every time. He and most musicians start to vary their rhythmical phrasing after their initial recording of the song after repetitive performances of it to keep it sounding fresh.

@@henryshockem9242 The killers sped off in a white dodge polara. Hurricane Carter was stopped by police driving away from the scene of the crime in his white Dodge Polara. It's not a common car. Eyewitnesses saw Hurricane and Artis and IDd them. Also, once in police custody hours after the shooting, Artis and Carter didn't have matching stories about what they had just been doing that night. They were given lie detector tests, and they both flunked them. Hurricane Carter himself has given three or four different versions of the story of what supposedly went down tha4 night. After he was freed, he claimed that the police planted fake bodies in the bar, and nobody was actually even killed. Does that version of the story sound at all plausible to anyone?
The killers used an unusual caliber of bullets. .32 caliber bullets in the pistol they used. Hurricane's white polara had .32 caliber pistol bullets strewn on the floor of the car when police arrested them. It's not exactly rocket science..32 caliber isn't even in the top 15 of bullet sizes. It's quite rare. They hid the guns and got rid of them, but they missed some bullets they dropped on the floor of Hurricane's car. Why isn't any of that in the song or the movie? Instead, there is a completely make-believe story about unhinged police officers who framed him. None of that stuff actually happened in real life, and the incriminating things Hurricane Carter did, like having 4 or 5 very different versions of his story about what he was doing that night. None of the stuff that makes Hurricane Carter look guilty is mentioned in the song or the film. Between his first and second trials, he beat up a black bail bonds lady so badly that she almost died. She didn't press charges and so police decided not to persue it. They could at least have shown that. Bob Dylan hasn't performed this song live since the 2nd trial when a Black jury found Artis and Carter guilty, and after everyone knew Carter beat up that bail bonds lady so badly, he put her in the hospital.

They drew a sketch of her description, and it matches John Artis. She also told her daughter that Artis and Carter were the ones who shot her. Also, Artis and Carter both flunked lie detector tests given to them just hours after the shootings.

i was fortunate enough to meet and speak to the man Bob is singing about. Ruben "hurricane" Carter. He was doing motivational speeches/testimonial for some insurance company. Whatever the reason was, it was really cool getting to meet him. i couldn't imagine how horrible it must have been to rot in prison for that many years while he was in his prime and such a great boxer, only to finally get out when he was too old to box any more. He died in 2014. I loved the movie with Denzel Washington, and i have always loved this song.

June 17, 1966 was the day Rubin Carter was arrested. He was exonerated in 1988. It is quite an amazing story, with his release being made possible with the help of a bunch of Canadians and the great Bobby D. This is a fantastic video and I thank you for posting it.

I've never seen a look of such great seriousness on his face as here in the moments before he begins to sing. The way it looks, he could be a soldier in a pitched and deafening battle, seconds away from charging.

Stumbled on this via diamonds and rust by Joan Baez. I saw Hurricane performed in London in the late seventies. Scarlet blew us all away that night, but I have to say the intensity of this version is killing. Bob has done so much, it's hard when you try to comment on a genius. We know. But on this recording we feel every word. The rhythm is all Bob a the back beat and bass threading pistol shots in the dark. What a song, at last about something real. A mans life rotting in. prison cell for something he didn't do. Racism in its most profound form. Bless you Bob and bless you kind people for liking this and appreciating the art and the humanity. I heard it recently with Tracey Chapman on the Grammy's. The power of a simple song told powerfully. Respect.
This song is one of Bobs greatest freedom songs , where he stood against the world with his message of truth , already then the evil of corruption and tyranny was shown, but people went sleeping again, dreaming into slavery, and thought it was easy to lean on the same people which destroyed societies then, they still do today, its time they leave, enough is enough. As shown in the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the manslaughter, unintentional murder and murder of George Floyd who actually died of a drug’s overdose and first said I can’t breathe after swallowing fentanyl before he was even touched. The first autopsy said it was a drug OD and if he had been found dead in a house then it wouldn’t have been suspicious but the Quincy was leaned on, threatened and changed the autopsy report.
Who else could produce such musical poetry? We are so fortunate to have witnessed his incredible talent.
This is by far Dylan's best song ever. I've never been a Dylan fan although I have been around through his many years. He combines his story telling with a true story, real people, social justice....it has it all. With excellent music, and highlights his playing.
It certainly made me more aware of not just Carter, but our sad sad legal system.
For me, Dylan's oeuvre is more about the story and songwriting than the musicality. This man is the prime example that you can play simple chords with an amazing story and still make one of the best songs ever. He's done this multiple times, including this song. I mean look at Times They Are A Changin', Like a Rolling Stone, Blowin' in the Wind, Tangled Up in Blue & A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. I'm positive there are more examples, but these are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head.

Everything is so perfect here. A moment thankfully captured on film. This is history. Also it shows what a great rhythm section can do to make a minimal ensemble sound huge without overpowering the singer. Howie Wyeth's snare just snaps and crackles with authority.

He used to come out in the Summers and go on cruises with friends. I didn't get up the nerve, because he was so well known, and I figured just being a harbor rat, they wouldn't want me annoying them. I think I was wrong though, as actually he was a nice guy.

As for his stage voice and delivery, my absolute favorite of all HAS to be the whole of Side 5 from The Concert For Bangladesh! Give them 5 or 6(?) songs a listen asap. Such a powerful performance. Dylan was such a genius. This song always gave me goosebumps. I remember hearing this song for the first time in high school and immediately bought the Desire album. He is one of our great storytellers made only stronger and more impactful in the form of song.
