  • English story about becoming fluent faster! In this story I tell you about the time a student did something I had never seen before. This one thing increased her fluency faster than I had seen in a student in all my years of teaching.

    REMEMBER if any of the conversation is difficult to understand you can turn on the subtitles with the "CC" button just below the screen. And, you can SLOW DOWN the speed of the video by clicking the "HD" button and choosing the playback speed. I recommend trying 0.75 or 0.5 and seeing what works best for you!

    Dear Tanya,
    I’m a workaholic. And even though many people tell me I have great English, I can never quite shake the feeling that my accent, mistakes, and vocabulary aren’t good enough. No one can be perfect, but we should strive for excellence. I strive for excellence, even though I still see a lot of things I don’t like about my English. I don’t want to settle and I want to keep striving for perfection, which is hard work. I’ll keep working at it. This is just my opinion, my self-reflection, and my way of life.

    I also admire your effort to speak Spanish and I'd like to give you a tip. The word you said sounds to me like "estadonadense" and you should say it a litle diferent, something like this "estado unidense".

    Dear Tanya,
    I also watch TV shows, but I only watch ones that are intellectually stimulating. There are some shows where each episode is completely independent. A new episode means a new story and new characters. For instance, the old black and white series “One Step Beyond” is like that. However, I’m a little worried that the characters don’t always use perfect English. For example, they might say things like “awful lot,” “barrel of laughs,” “lousy idea,” or “whole lot of stuff,” and many other similar expressions. I’m not sure if it’s okay to use these in everyday conversation in a sophisticated setting. What’s your opinion, as a language coach and native speaker?

    • @EnglishCoach3Ts
      @EnglishCoach3Ts  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It depends on what you mean by "in a sophisticated setting". In the USA, we are pretty casual in a lot of settings. I would even say most settings.

      @@EnglishCoach3Ts Tanya, I am not a native speaker and sometimes it is difficult for me to decide what I can say from what I heard in films and what I can’t if I am talking to a professor from California and his family. Many years ago, when I was a graduate student, I met an American professor and his wife. And one day, instead of the literary “batteries are low”, I said to his wife a phrase from one film: “batteries are dead”. She didn’t like it. She didn’t show it, but I understood it from the slight facial expression on her face. And there are many such expressions in films.

    • @EnglishCoach3Ts
      @EnglishCoach3Ts  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmm. That's interesting because batteries are low would mean that they are still working but almost dead where as batteries are dead would simply mean they aren't working anymore.

    Hey Teacher Tania, i have a question... i dont know how is the different or use correctly the phrase "Such us" or only "such", you can help me explain that? Thanks a lot.

    • @EnglishCoach3Ts
      @EnglishCoach3Ts  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      We use "Such as" when we are going to give an example. I like books, such as historical novels. We use the word "such" when we want to emphasize or say a lot or very. For example, He is such a kind person.
