Just seen this tutorial. I put "var /.4" (without the quotes) in the "Expression" field as the diameter of my wheels is 0.4m and that worked fine. I also changed "World Space" to "Local Space" in the bit at the bottom and now when I constrain the empty to follow a path the wheels point in the right direction all the time. Until I saw this tutorial I was having loads of trouble because I was trying to do this without drivers (you don't actually need them if the vehicle only travels in one direction) so many thanks Olav.
Dear MattVG, think in this way. Use another empty, add in Y-axis rotation set the driver, edit driver, set the object as that empty. Then add constraint to the wheel that the rotation Z should be min -20degree and max 20degree for example. In short: add another empty to do the driver. And set constraint to wheel Z rotation
I'm gonna make it short, I'm currently preparing a huge project for my future which is actually an animated short film about a robot, and I clearly needed this kind of tutorial that will save me a huge amount of time because instead of animating the body, then the wheels, I will be able to simply move the body and then the wheels will follow. So I can't thank you enough.
instead guessing multiplying by 2, you can calculate: rotation = x_coordinate / (wheel_radius). The wheel diameter can be measured with the measurement tool for example. (Radius = diameter / 2)
Thank you very much. Brilliant tutorial. So may tutorials of same kind with such complexity, enough to get frustrated!! Then a tutorial like this comes on the way, makes life so easy. Thank you so much. Cheers.
I always wondered how they animated the wheels, seems so much work to manually animate it, your guide answered that question, thanks.. i guess next is suspensions...
This is an EXCELLENT video!!! I used this to animate a jet taxiing on the jetway.....butI have a question... How do I make the wheels stop rotating at a certain point on the timeline? do I have to change the drivers, then keyframe until a complete stop?
Amazing! 💓 "Please make a tutorial on Animation Nodes & Motion Graphics please...."

Olav, your video is excelent, easy and short, but in car.blend, you must save using File>External Data>Automatically Pack into .blend Some images like pirelli image, isn't come with blend file
Wow, I actually did not know that was possible, that’s why I linked to the source with the images, thanks. :) This is a rigging tutorial though, so rendering was not really the point.
Thank you soo much for this tutorial! Helped me so much! I made a butt plug in this "wheel" rig rolling round a parented sphere and it looks awesome :D:D
Sylwester Mielniczuk haha you don’t say? 🤣 i’m still pretty beginner so i haven’t modeled a lot and i don’t understand half the things i’ve done now but i’m getting there, do you genuinely know how to separate wheels from a previous existing model or no?
3rd tutorial I have watched on this subject. ( over and over) Followed each to the letter and cant get my wheels to turn. Must be 2.93 version or my computer.
@@Olav3D actually can you make one tutorial like how to rig a car completely like even turning the wheels left and right. Then adding roads with awesome real looking textures ..And an small animation... It will help me like a lot and please try to do it in blender 2.8 or above
What would the advantages be in using drivers instead of constraints and motor constraints? I can only assume in non-physics based scenes it would be less complicated to use the drivers.
Help, I had to change the type location of the driver to Y Location, as when it was on the X Location, my wheel rotation value keeps snapping back to the zero value and u cant see the rotation of the wheel. So now that I changed it to Y Location, the wheel is turning and rotating but no the problem is that it's turning backwards instead of forward. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I don't know if you worked it out but you would need to place the driver on the wheel's Y-rotation value instead of X. Unless you meant getting the value FROM the movement on the Y-axis, in which case you'd need to choose Y location in the driver attributes.
55+ vehicles for Blender add-on:
bit.ly/3cuWF8N
for the rotation of wheel you can compute the rotation speed vs speed v=R*w v(m/s) R(m) et w(rad/s) but good tutorial as usual
Can you give an example of how you would do that?

wut how ??

I would love to see your solution for a rig that handles turning and moving in different directions.
Use rig-a-car add-on it even has dynamic suspension and it's free

To add driver to other wheels, we can use CTRL+L > Animation Data.

I can't do this much maths :'(((
Idk how u guys do....
Thanks for this, you helped me get a precise wheel movement!
Man ur videos are just what they need to be simple and understandable
Keep it up!
Awesome! this is what I need currently in my personal project.

Thank you for this amazing tutorial! when I did the wheels on the opposite side I had to make sure to put a - infront of my value so it worked
This is really easy this the best totorial for beginners very much appreciated better and easier than understanding rigging animation

lovely tutorial sir
I knew it! I was looking for a way to do this with helpers. Thanks!
Sir you are awesome and please keep uploading videos I started learning now....
you are the best friend, new subscriber

Good Olav3D 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for Blend Files
Great video. Simple and works great. Thank you so much!
Perfect as always
Cool, thanxs for the tutorial, but how about physical wheel movement? With a joint or such... thanxs
So good and so simple. Thanks a lot Olav
very very useful tutorial many many thanks, ( also good for text caption ) description
beautiful
nice tutorial helped alot
Nice & functioning tutorial! Keep going 👍
can you make a tutorial on how to make the steering wheel steer with the same car rig?
So cool! Thank you so much!
Awesome! Thank You!
thank you so much brother, god bless you !!
my wheels aren't working for the drivers.
Thank you so much!!!
thank you man
thanks for this video it helped me
Great tutorial! thanks!
Thanks
Thanks you So simply done this
Thank you
Good work

Please make a car tutorial
Is that an AC cobra? Love it.
Thanks !! Very nice !!!!
This one is great
Great Sir G
super
Thanks, very helpful.
very helpful
Thank you 🙂
When I rotate it it doesn´t rotate in its own axis like a wheel, instead it moves all the wheel doing a giant circle
Select the wheel, go to Object > Set Origin > Origin to center of mass (Surface)
Olliwer thank you very much🙏🏼
Thanks
Click the wheels go to object>apply>rotation
@@Olliwer ty so much man.i was stuck at this for hours
Great tutorial, thanks.
And where did you get the car model? it's really nice
Please give a tutorial on how to model this car. And make it long:)
Thanx!!!
awesome! thank you :)
that's only 1 direction. what if you're on a curvy path
When I animate last two tyres it rotates in opposite direction what can I do plzz tell??
Make a video on how did you made the lightining effect of this car black background and car is really awesome kindly make a video how did u made this

Wheel rotating on the wrong axis.. can't figure it out
thanks !!
that only goes forward what if you make it turn
ever figure out what to do?

Hey Olav, thanks for this tutorial!
Did you already start on the more complex car rig tutorial?
thanks mate it really helped
if you want to use a model but the wheels aren’t separated from the body, how would we set it up to rig it?

Select all your wheels in edit mode and hit p - seperate by selection
If you set it to use the local X instead of the world you can turn the car and the wheels will still work
Seriously? Is this confirmed?? I can't try it just now but I'm hoping it works
confirmed, it worked. thanks bro!
How did you make the black background void ???
why does my wheel rotate backwards
I have the exact same problem.
@Lil Kabob thank you! it worked

Amazing, but how was it rendered ? what kind of render did you use to make it so nice ? Thanks
Its ASMR
Why does the wheel rotate on y axis? Mine rotates on x axis instead. I’m confused.
maybe you added the driver on the wrong axis?
ur car maybe facing in y axis...so set drivers at x asis...his one was facing x axis and so he set drivers to y axis
May I use your models for a youtube video
when I move the car on the X axis, the wheels rotate. OK. but how can i do the same when i move the car on the Y axis?
i used the rigacar addon to rig this car
Yes thank's you
What's the diff between track to constraint and parent?
what about the suspensions and the power output to the wheel?
It is not happening
i want fully tutorial in very slowly
v good..+1
Can you export the animation to other rendering softwares
my wheel dont rotate

is it possible to use "rigacar" for rigging a 6-wheel vehicle? it's a mars rover. Please tell me
my wheels are rotating in opposite directions plz help
Why does it seem that whatever problem I have , Olav has the solution to it
Because I make tutorials for things people actually search for and need haha ;)
