    My dad knew Super Mario World like the back of his hand. As I played it, he would point out all the secrets and clues hidden throughout the game. It really shows how much of an impact these games had on his generation, they were a massive part of many people's childhoods, and I'm lucky they were also part of mine

    Just a perspective of someone who was around in the 80s when the US Super Mario 2 came out. No one really felt like something was off with it. It was just as common for a sequel to have completely different game feel (look at Zelda 2 for example) as it was for a sequel to be a quick level pack/asset flip. So, no it just felt normal really.

      It's also worth noting that, ironically, Doki Doki Panic started its development as Super Mario 2.

    This order makes sense to anyone approaching these games today but back in the NES days after only playing the first game, Super Mario Bros 2 was incredible. Just the fact you had multiple characters, could go in doors and pick things up, levels that scrolled vertically as well as horizontally, the fact it was less linear, the mystery of it all. Everything felt like an expansion on the first game...of course as soon as I played SMB3 it took it to another level but still after all these years I cannot consider SMB2 anything less than a classic. The Lost Levels was more like SMB1 DLC and personally I loved that too.

    Y'know, I think another reason Super Mario Run is extremely low (asides from being a mobile game that many people probably glossed over) is that the full game is only available for people who paid to unlock the other 6 worlds and extra features not available right from the get-go. I feel a lot of people react negatively to having to pay microtransactions in a free-to-download game with it dangling the rest of the content in front of you, but are fine with paying for the app upfront if it means getting the full experience

    • @RickWhitechest
      @RickWhitechest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      I dunno, to me it didn't feel like a microtransaction fest. The game really only asks you to pay once, so the whole thing feels more like a "demo before purchase" instead.

    • @thegreatprimoyt3519
      @thegreatprimoyt3519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah, getting a Mario game for free is really nice plus it being in your phone, since we have it on us most of the time and could help with time killing on a bus, and after getting the game it feels WAY too simple. Mobile games for Mario are hard because using Joysticks for movement on a phone is really bad since it takes up space, and if you just make him move by himself and jumping by tapping the screen, it kind of feel like the player has very little action because even if the game has different mechanics than jumping like backwards jumping, hanging, wall jumping, etc. youre still just tapping the screen. After expiriencing that you get the sad pop-up of you needing to buy the game, so it isnt necesarily bad, but it breaks the news that it was (indirectly) free.

    I can understand the younger generation picking Odyssey and the galaxy games, but when Mario 64 first came out, it was a brand new experience. A lot of younger people still have very fond memories of mario 64 from the DS remake and 3d allstars, and it definitely holds up a lot better today than Mario Sunshine imo. • @yawnberg

    As a person who was in the 80s I can tell you nobody thought there was something off about SMB2 because there was no established Mario feel. There had only been one game. And SMB 1 had been pretty different from the other Mario appearances to that point, such as NES Tennis, Wrecking Crew, or Donkey Kong.

    • @Scarybug

      Yes and similarly Zelda 2 was totally different from Zelda 1, so it felt in step with what Nintendo was doing.

    • @kentmartin9289
      @kentmartin9289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think it's safe to say most people thought it was a weird turn and wished it had been more like SMB 1. I wasn't coming up with a conspiracy theory of it being some other game being reskinned as a Mario game, but when I heard about that it made all kinds of sense to me.
      But you make a fair point. Before Mario 3 came out and was more of a return to a Mario 1 feel, for all we knew each Mario game would be radically different/innovative.

    • @MrMisanthrope84
      @MrMisanthrope84 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yeah SMB2 was just another Mario game. I was there, can confirm. It was only really in the 00's and the internet really shining the light on that game as being a bit 'weird'. In the 80s and 90s it was completely accepted as a legit Mario game. And in my opinion, it still is.
      The whole 'SMB2 not being a proper Mario game' thing is a bit of a revisionist take on history. For us kids, it was Mario. It introduced a heap of mechanics (for instance, Mario holding onto things and throwing them) and brought in multiple new characters into the Mario universe who are now staples of the franchise too (the most notable ones being Shy Guy, Fuzzies and Pokies, as well as the option to select from four hero characters not just Mario). And the music was excellent. SMB2 was awesome.

    • @yawnberg
      @yawnberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@kentmartin9289 Mario 3 was the biggest departure of all... The power ups, the strange worlds with all sorts of new enemies, the inventory, the overworld map, the framing device of the whole thing being a play... that was a weird game.

    • @kentmartin9289
      @kentmartin9289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@yawnberg but SMB 3 felt like a progression from SMB 1. It was still a side scrolling platformer where you play as Mario and break bricks and hit ? cubes for power ups. Collect 100 coins for an extra life, you have small Mario, big Mario, fire power Mario, gumbas, the same main villain, etc. SMB 2 you chose which character to play as and they had different characteristics, you were pulling stuff up from the ground instead of breaking blocks. Isn't there a health system in SMB2 also?
      So there were lots of innovations in SMB3, but it felt like a sequal to SMB1. SMB2 always felt like a huge departure, even before SMB3 came out. At the time I passed it off as bold choices that didn't pay off very well.

      Bowser's Fury was great and enjoyable, and I haven't forgotten about it, but it's far from the most enjoyable to me. Ever since I 100% the game in February of last year, I haven't felt the need to return to it since, and haven't touched it once. The gameplay is fun, but there's not much to see, and barely anything to come back to. I like what it seeks to accomplish, but it could've been accomplished better.
      Also Fury Bowser is great in theory, but falls apart in practice. it just works to add time management to the game. (or waste your time if you have nothing else to do and don't have a bowser Amiibo out.) I'm not complaining about it because I'm too dumb to understand it or anything, it can just get annoying at times and would've been a better, more fun experience without it. (or if it was handled differently.)
      These are all just nitpicks, though. It's still a good experience beginning to end. there's just no reason for me to go back to it. (ME specifically, if this is your single favorite Mario experience of all time, that's valid, I just have no personal reason to return to it.)

    It’s no easy feat to follow up on Galaxy 1 & 2, and everyone was experiencing a bit of Mario fatigue at the time. 3D world was the 6th main-line Mario game in the span of 4 years (2009-2013)

They should be hard because the levels are hard and the controls are there to keep you having fun. Just look at Luigi U, sure the controls might be a bit slippery but the controls feel respinsive, if you want to make a triple jump you can do it on your first try, if you want to turn around you will do that, even if it takes a bit longer than avarage it still consistently takes the same amount of time to do so, but the game is still hard because of the levels and time limit. I don't know about the second question, but you can probably find a pretty comparable number to the amount of responses each game got by looking at the sales number of each game. And the most "meh" game was new super mario bros 2 since it had an average rating of 3.00 and the responses said stuff like it was fun, but forgettable and more of the same.

      Sales numbers wouldn't be very helpful, as the amount of survey responses are inevitably going to be skewed towards the newest games and by the age of the average viewerbase of the channel. I'd wager Sunshine or NSMB DS onwards had more players and thus would have significantly more responses because the folks that grew up with that generation of mario are probably the people drawn in by the channel (assuming the instructions to not respond on games that weren't played were followed)

    I think the reasoning behind Lost Levels' baffling level design was that many of the levels were designed around the difficulty of an arcade game- several of them were designed for Vs. Super Mario Bros (an arcade version of SMB1) then ported over into Lost Levels afterwards since Nintendo wanted you to be able to experience these new levels at home, even though at its core Vs. SMB1 was still SMB1 but with less repeated stages.

I grew up with the Mega Drive and PS1, so interactivity with the environment was limited at best. But I would always try stuff out. "What if I hit this tree with this fire ability?" "What if I jump up onto that high rock?"

That game is really clever and interesting, and I think whatever Mario game we end up with next will take a lot of inspiration from that game (I think it was a bit of a test). It proved that open world Mario works (as opposed to open area Mario like 64, Sunshine, Odyssey, etc.), and there's a lot of potential for a full-scale game of that style.

      To be honest with you. I think you’re biased to Galaxy because it is widely praised.
      Mario Odyssey is a far more enjoyable experience (compared to the gimmick filled Mario Galaxy), because of how seem-less the gameplay is to pick up and just enjoy each nook and cranny. Mario Galaxy will never be my favorite Mario game, in fact, it will never really be able to uphold the status of what a regular Mario game should be.
      Mario Galaxy is a wonderful beast in its own, and that series deserves to stay that way. Fun, but yet an outdated trend from Mario’s past that people still haven’t moved past.
      It will never be horrible or undeserving, in fact it is still quite amazing, but it will surely go down as one of my least favorite entrees whenever people decide to bash Odyssey or 3D World for going back to what made 3D Mario games nearly flawless. Galaxy embodies what Mario needs once in a while, a game separate from the norm.
      It is perfectly executed as a game that should stand off on its own sub series, but people need to stop glorifying it, because it will just create unrealistic and unfair opinions.

      Repent and follow Jesus my friend! Repenting doesn't mean confessing your sins to others, but to stop doing them altogether. Belief in Messiah alone is not enough to get you into heaven - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Contemplate how the Roman empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years to accomplish the religion of the Israelites C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. - Revelation 3:20
      Revelation has been unfolding since Jesus died. The Popes have claimed to be equal to God and set themselves in Jesus' place (antichrist(s)). Vatican City (Which is its own nation BTW) have risen up to fulfill the role of the false prophet
      Regarding the man of lawlessness or antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 says “Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” The restrainer that the Apostle Paul was referring to in 2 Thessalonians was the Western Roman Emperor, who held back the Popes from taking power. Once the last Western Roman Emperor was removed from power in 476 AD, the Pope was given civil and ecclesiastic authority over Rome; healing the deadly head wound of the beast in Revelation 13, as they took the Emperors title of Pontifex Maximus, leader of the church and state.
      “We may according to the fullness of our power, dispose of the law and dispense above the law. Those whom the Pope of Rome doth separate, it is not a man that separates them but God. For the Pope holdeth place on earth, not simply of a man but of the true God.” (Source: “Decretals of Gregory IX,” Book 1, chapter 3.)
      Pope Pius V blasphemed, “The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.” (Source: Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Cities Petrus Bertanous Chapter XXVII: 218.)
      Pope Leo XIII declared, “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.” (Source: Pope Leo XIII Encyclical Letter, June 20, 1894)
      The antichrist sea beast of Revelation points to the office of the papacy, the Popes of Rome, who controlled the Roman beast for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD.
      Daniel 7:25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” The Popes of Rome spoke against Elohim and proclaimed to be God. They reigned for 1,260 years, from 538-1798 AD. during which they caused tens of millions of saints to be killed.
      The Pope’s title is Vicar of Christ, which in Latin is ‘Vicarius Filii Dei’, and equates numerically to the number 666

    • @WhitePaintbrush
      @WhitePaintbrush 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My biggest problem with odyssey is that moons feel worthless. The game rewards you for talking to an NPC, for doing a single ground pound over a specific spot, for carrying a seed across a huge featureless desert, for buying them in a shop, and even for kicking a literal rock. This makes moons not feel like a reward at all. I prefer games like Galaxy where your goal is clear: a shiny golden star, all the way off in the distance, and now it’s up to you to get there, overcoming any and all obstacles on your path. In odyssey, I never feel like I’m working towards something, and as a result I don’t feel any sense of achievement when the game throws me a moon. This isn’t helped by how easy the game is overall, all the little platforming rooms are really short, and outside those rooms the overworld doesn’t integrate platforming into it very much.

      This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
      Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
      Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

    Mario 3D Land is great ! I think it really managed to capture that feeling of exploration that the original games had. So many secret zones to find, so many replayability and references.
    The Zelda reference in the sand dungeon level, the Mario Bros 3 music remixes, the Mario Bros 1 pixel art levels, the 3 crowns (or 1110 lives), the cutscene before the World 8 Bowser Fight, which is a reference to Petey Pirhana's intro in Sunshine.
    And if you want to 100% this game, you have to know what you're doing. You can unlock stars by doing various stuff in the game (like reaching the 1110 lives), but these stars can become shiny stars if you never make the white Tanuki suit appear (lose less than 5 lives per level). If you don't know that, it's easy to make the 100% completion impossible to reach.
    Also I saw you showed the Giana sisters when speaking about Mario Bros ripoffs. The Giana sisters have become their own series, and they have a lot of potential, like giving a more important role to girls than they'll ever have in mainline Mario games. Do they use this potential ? Eh not really, but it's there, and if I could, I'd make a Giana sisters fangame, but nobody cares about me and my ideas anyway so that ain't happening.

    • @mrmacross

      I feel the opposite. 1-5 is too many options for a lot of people. One of the reasons why TH-cam went from a 1-5 star rating to Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down was because too many people defaulted to 1s and 5s while rarely using the intermediate values. That just gets worse when you add more options; like really, what's the difference between a 3 and a 4 on a 1-10 scale? You're already saying it's below average if you consider 5 a median score, or it's really bad if you're using a school-like ABCDF where F is 59 (5.9) and below.

    • @DefinitivNichtSascha
      @DefinitivNichtSascha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1-10 is really just the same as 1-5. Because in our day and age, you'll never see a game rated anything from 1-5 out of 10. You'd thing 5/10 would mean that it's average, but we've come to think of that as "a bad game".

    As someone who grew up with Mario, from Donkey Kong and Mario Bros in the arcades back in the 80s to the most recent Mario Odyssey, I think I can say without a doubt that Mario is the most consistently great series in the history of gaming. You won't be able to find a period where Mario was 2nd best to any other platformer. Also, I agree that Odyssey is the best one, despite being the most recent. I'm about a year younger than that & it was similar for me. It was WAY more enjoyable to play that game,than the other 2,it seemed like. Mostly,because there were SO many more levels & because of all the secret areas/tricks...
      It was also easier than the other 2 Mario games(most didn't count the "Mario Bros." arcade game,even w/ there being a port on NES of it). So,that made it less-frustrating to play. Not too mention,the save-file system encouraged you to play it,even when you didn't have much time for gaming. Also,many games erased your progress once you "lost" & the idea that you could make mistakes & just reset to a save-point,was still VERY special to us,back-then(about the only games w/ save files,were RPGs,back-then)...
      To compare tho,SMB2 was an interesting/unusual game. But,MUCH shorter than SMB3 &,actually,quite a bit harder(I always felt). It was also considered the hardest to play(of the 3 SMB games),by most. Since,you couldn't just jump on enemies & had to pick-up objects,then throw them /just-right/,to hit them. Also,having to find "keys" & unlock doors at the end of a level,meant a steeper learning-curve. So,SMB3 was a refreshing return,in a lot of ways,to what MOST had familiarity,with. As,nearly EVERYONE w/ an NES played it,at some point. Even,those w/o it packed-in w/ their NES would find a way to "check-it-out" somehow(it was literally considered THE must-play game on the NES,until SMB3 became the pack-in title,that replaced it)...
      Anyway,I always had many different games to play,back-then. Thanks,to my parents giving me 1 almost every B-Day & X-Mas. Also,weekend rentals(usually 2 games)& friends w/ their own collections(most would trade,for an agreed-upon time). So,the fact that I can say I played that game a LOT more than anything else,reveals how special it was,to those of us who were able to be there when it 1st released & EVERYONE talked about how it was 1 of the greatest games EVER & THE reason to own an NES...
      I remember ppl being surprised that ANY game could be considered more most-popular/loved than SMB was. It was THAT impressive,at the time...

    I don't know if Mario Odyssey will hold up as number one but I have to say its charm is unique, beyond the creativity of the levels the story is actually a blast. The premise of Bowser wrecking havoc around the world 'cause nothing is too good for his wedding is just hysterical.
