Even in the All-Stars version, shit can get frustrating.
This review actually makes me really curious to try out Super Mario Bros. 2 The Lost Levels, it really seems like a challenge! Your vids are awesome, Johnny
Fun fact: Hammer Bros. chasing you was a thing in SMB1 as well. You had to wait for a bit to have them do so, but they did. To counter it, stay on the left side of the screen and jump to kill them. For some reason, Mario/Luigi is invincible there.
This was the video that made me love this channel. I thank my brother for showing this to me. Included those moments where everynow and then i die from laughter.
To think, the info at the beginning was what a lot of people thought before the true story was released. Mario 2 is indeed the true sequel, which was changed to Doki Doki, because the Japanese thought it was too different, which America thought Lost Levels was too hard, that lead to Mario 2 going back to what it was, which not only did better but also got a Japanese release later.
This game WAS hard but you know what? For some reason, I kept on playing it and that's what actually made it enjoyable for me and now I can actually beat it without getting a game over. And I can beat Worlds A-D as well.
Going through some of the first Johnny vids I ever watched. Its crazy how far youve come. You might not read this, but keep up the great work. Your vids are awesome From, A long time fan
At the time, Nintendo was planning on making a VERTICAL SCROLLING Mario game, but it was scrapped because Miyamoto said it was a stupid idea, and way too linear for his ideals. The vertical Mario game was eventually used to make Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, which in turn became Super Mario Bros. USA. In a sense, America really did get the true sequel, leaving Japan with a piss-poor port. Don't be so shocked; it happens all the time with Dragon Quest.
Once you get used to Luigi's messed up physics it actually makes the game significantly easier IMO. His improved jumping ability allows you to clear a lot more obstacles and jumps with ease, making the game much more playable. Mario requires a lot more precision, and sometimes too much so.
The first time I ever played this game I picked Luigi because he's my favorite. I had no idea he had altered properties and I thought that was just how the game played. I finished the game after a very frustrating run. Talk about diving straight in, huh?
Lost Levels is them getting carried away with what they can do and losing sight of what they should do. A but like how in Mario Maker it’s easy to make really difficult levels with all the tools you have, and getting the balance right is much trickier
And people still say Americans didn't get this game because we were pussies. Why is it that 80% of insults towards the US I see are either ironic or ignorant?
GreenNinjaTea You do realize that Nintendo Of America were the ones who refused to localize this game, right? Japan wanted to, but they couldn't. Do your research before complaining.
Omar Elmosrati Yeah and Nintendo of America knew that it was too hard and could scare away fans with it's extreme difficulty in a sequel. I did do my research.
+GreenNinjaTea Personally, I could see a huge marketing idea out of it. You just need to promote it to those who are good at the original SMB and/or thought it was too easy.
They haven't been the Super Gaming Bros. for years, since 2010 I think, although I think there's a SGB channel that's linked on his channel's "about" section.

your reviews are great but the sound is harsh and prob clipping, watch out for clipping when you record your voice put on a limiter, it will work wonders for your audio quality
The reason for that fire bar to either be there or NOT be there is because of sprite limitations. If you passed or killed enough enemies, then the fire bar will spawn, but if to many sprites are in the screen, it won't. It's an NES limitation, actually
I enjoy most of your videos but I hate it when people censor words. Everybody knows what people are saying even with the beep. Just means now I got to hear an annoying beep.
Strangely, i found this game insanely easier with Luigi. Once you get used to the traction, his higher jump and weird physics makes his landing placement different than what the developers intended with Mario. So bullshit enemy attacks tend to miss Luigi.
I actually enjoyed the challenge of this game. Yes, it was hard, but it was a lot more reasonable than many of the fan hacks I played which were just plain frustrating. This one was able to be completed with practice and I felt rewarded when I beat it. If you want to see something frustrating, try the Kaizo Mario World fan hack for SMW.
Games like this, is the reason I love emulation and Reproductions. Being able to play games that I would otherwise never get a chance to play. Also, am I the only one that doesn't think this game is THAT hard. Ok sure, having to beat the game..what..8?10? times in order to get the extra worlds..and having to beat world 9 on 1 life. That's a bit ridiculous. But the main 8 worlds aren't all that hard. Especially if you know to avoid the backwards warps. I dunno, maybe I play too much Mario. Because for some reason people seem to think the original Super Mario Bros is hard too, and I can run through that in no time at all. Of course this game's harder. My guess, is that they expected you to play it after already beating the first game. So this game would come after World 8. Think of it as Super Mario Bros. PART 2. Not a sequel, but instead, a second part to the same game. Instead of worlds 1-9, think of them as 9-17. Also those disappearing and reappearing firebars, you can't blame on this game. It did that in the original Super Mario Bros. also.
TXF The worst part of it all is that Nintendo banned emulators because they think for some reason they'll get more money if someone can't play a classic online. They're not selling NES consoles or games, but they still hate it when someone wants to help others experience retro games. They gain nothing! And they still banned emulators!
Peggle Lover Well, to be fair, they DO have the virtual console, which has NES games. They could technically lose some potential money if someone that was going to buy a game on virtual console, learns that they can just play it for free on their computer.
TXF It's still bullshit. Half the world has a physical cartridge, and another third has the virtual console. You'd think they have enough money to not care, but no. They have to milk 25 year-old games for every last penny.
Peggle Lover They're not milking. They own the right to the games. It's no different than modern companies having issues with people illegally downloading their game. The only difference is that the games we're talking about, are old. If you ran a company that made games, and people were illegally downloading your games, a lot of which you're still actively trying to sell, you wouldn't be happy either.
I have been trying to get past level 1 on this game on the 3DS. Mario Bro's on the NES is a really easy game. I agree this game is just impossible at some points.
I swear the piece at 2:52 sounds like a piano rendition of the opening notes of 'Anna ni Issho Datta no ni' from Gundam SEED... and it bugs the crap outta me.
Certainly you can't be the only one that likes what your profile pic displays. BTW, no. I may not like Lost Levels, but there still exist those who do.
Nope. its hard but at least enjoyable. Besides i think Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts n Goblins is harder even thoo Lost Levels is what I consider "the Ninja Ghosts n Golblins of Mario".
The Last Of Us grounded mode is the most unfair piece of shit I have ever played. I beat Dark Souls. I finished Super Mario Bros 2 The lost levels. But that mode always kicks my fucking ass.
6:39 There is a continue cheat on the first game, (To activate it, on the game over screen, hold A & keep doing it on the title screen while pressing start.) but it takes you to the 1st level of the world.

Strangely, i found this game insanely easier with Luigi. Once you get used to the traction, his higher jump and weird physics makes his landing placement different than what the developers intended with Mario. So bullshit enemy attacks tend to miss Luigi.
2:41 Top 10 Saddest Anime Betrayals
It did that in the original Super Mario Bros. also.
TXF Someone that likes emulation on TH-cam? I thought I was the only one...
They have to milk
25 year-old games for every last penny.
Unfortunately for Johnny at 5:22, the suicide button only exist in the All Stars port of Super Mario Bros 2 USA.
"So let's make the same game, but really fkn hard." -Nintendy
I am SO glad that I'm not alone here. Also, I had no idea that playing Luigi would make it even more difficult
It totally is.
it sounds like a melancholy version of The Musashi Legend to me.
That's because it is.
it's actually Kimi wa boku ni niteiru
Ah, even worse.
4:33 is this a prototype homing attack
No
This is one of the funniest reviews on the channel xD
Man....this game was just wow....I played the All Stars version and even still I find myself having a hard time beating these levels.
Name of song at 3:46 ?
Solaire of Astora I just ask the same thing and you didn't get a reply in 4 years. Man i hope I don't have wait that long.
@@mikemike-lu1so Reason. It's from Gundam.
@@ordinaryaki2105 Thank you! I only had to wait 4 months. Although I totally forgot I made this comment.
Ahh dusting off an old classic video
Because he said that this game was for super gamers and he couldn't beat cuz of the difficulty that's why he couldn't call him self that anymore
actually he beat the game on SGBLikestoplay.
Oh ok. I havent watched any SGBlikestoplay i should like at it.
Mario Player It's without a doubt their most vulgar commentary.
Yeah
yes indeed.
This is the very first video I've seen in your channel tbh
Well done for including gundam seed music at 2:55
Made my day ^_^
This was the inspiration for Hard levels in Mario maker
SBGaming174. The original unfair mario
@@75JUNAKI Agreed. In fact I didn't think Luigi was that slippery.
Am i the only one who enjoys this game?
Yes
No but you don't speak for everyone
Certainly you can't be the only one that likes what your profile pic displays.
BTW, no. I may not like Lost Levels, but there still exist those who do.
Nope. its hard but at least enjoyable. Besides i think Ninja Gaiden and Ghosts n Goblins is harder even thoo Lost Levels is what I consider "the Ninja Ghosts n Golblins of Mario".
Garnet Bezanson Yes u fucking weirdo
Johnny Vs Dark Souls...?
***** The only thing he would have said is "fuck" :/
***** I cracked up when I saw your username haha
My older brother said he threw his PS3 controller in a rage from dying so many times when he was playing.
Grady Childs I had my fair share of controller slams thanks to fucking Duke's Archive.
The Last Of Us grounded mode is the most unfair piece of shit I have ever played. I beat Dark Souls. I finished Super Mario Bros 2 The lost levels. But that mode always kicks my fucking ass.
This video was uploaded a day before my birthday a great video for a great early birthday present!
6:39 There is a continue cheat on the first game, (To activate it, on the game over screen, hold A & keep doing it on the title screen while pressing start.) but it takes you to the 1st level of the world.
