WrathofHiei I seem to recall Mouser being featured often enough in the first DiC Super Mario Bros. cartoon. He was King Koopa's second in command (that version being a blend of Bower and Wart). I got the impression that at the time he was reasonably popular; if he had been worked into a later game he'd probably be reasonably well known. Then again I (overall) liked the enemy designs in this game and perhaps because I'm not as good of a player, I found them threatening enough.
The only reason I remember Mouser was because of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. I remember in the mid 2000s we had Netflix and I watched it on there since my dad remembered it and he remembered liking it.
That is if you defeat 5 enemies in a single throw, or with the Superstar, but in the GBA version you only need to defeat 2 enemies in a throw to get a heart or use a shell to knock 1 enemy, or at least a big enemy
Technically, according to the story, the Dream Machine doesn't belong to Wart. He stole it from... I forget who, but it doesnt wanna work for him, therefore it's working against him Lol
It’s my favorite of the NES Mario’s. I could never get behind the flow of SMB3 to like it enough (World on the other hand, heck yeah). Not that I don’t appreciate SMB3 for the huge amount of stuff it added after SMB1!
Doki Doki Panic was originally going to be a Mario game.Nintendo made a deal with Fuji television and changed the characters to mascots of the tv event. Shigeru miyamoto worked more on this game than the original smb 2 "the lost levels". Then Doki Doki Panic was changed back to a Mario game and it became what it was originally supposed to be.
I always wanted them to bring Mouser back. He played a big role in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and if they can keep reusing characters like Birdo then there's no reason why he couldn't make an appearance now and then.
I heard Super Mario Bros. 2 just being a sprite swap is just half the story. Someone told me it was orignally supposed to be a Mario game, but because it was not Mario enough, the sprites got swapped to the new Doki Doki Panic sprites. Sounds weird, but Super Mario Bros. was very different from Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong too. The same goes for the first 2 Zelda games.
A lot of sequels were very different from the originals back then, unlike today where most of them are pretty much the same thing sadly. Mario 1 and Mario 2 (Seeing how the original one was transformed into Doki Doki panic, just to be again Mario in the end) Zelda 1 and Zelda 2, (From Adventure to an Action-Platformer) Castlevania 1 and 2 (From Platformer to what's known as Metroidvania) Final Fantasy I and II (Still RPG, but a very different one) Don Doko Don 1 and 2 (From Arcade to Platformer) Donkey Kong 1 and Jr and 3 (Each one is totally different) ToeJam & Earl 1 and Panic in Funkotron (From somewhat Roguelike to Platformer) And many, many more.
According to DYKG, they wanted to expand the horizontal scrolling from SMB into vertical, so a tech demo was made. At that time, SMBLL was released in Japan and N had a deal with Fuji TV, then the demo turned from a Mario project into DDP. This adds up to the well known story of Lost levels being too hard and all that. Supposedly, the game was meant to be entirely vertical, but Miyamoto said this wouldn't offer very much gameplay-wise, therefore it should have horizontal sections as well. This game's legacy in SM3DW and Captain Toad is obvious, a reason to add more love for the game.
you know i think its about time for Wart to come back as a major boss for the next mario luigi rpg. maybe a story like professor E. Gadd builds a dream machine after the events from Dream Team. he uses mario as a test subject for his machine. things start off smoothly, but some malfunctions start happening and BAM!! BOOM!! CRASH!! the machine gets damaged but something came through from marios dreams. ENTER WART!! the bosses you fight are the ones from this game as well as the baddies.
My favorite Mario game on the NES. Throwing dudes into dudes is infinitely more satisfying to me than just landing on them. I also like Yoshi's Island more than Mario World, so maybe I'm a maniac who enjoys launching objects at shy guys, who knows
Though I like the GBA Remake more to be honest, I'd have to agree. I just don't get why this game is the Black Sheep of the Mario series, especially since Nintendo has referenced this game in some way or another ever since then. I guess it's because some Mario fans feel...Cheated?...By the (now-ubiquitous) fact that the game is a rom hack of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. But guess what? That game was originally a "Mario-y" game to begin with, so, when NOA localized it into Super Mario Bros. 2, they more-or-less brought it back to the original state! Through Super Mario Advance 2 (Super Mario World) has a special place in my heart, I do have to say, compared to Yoshi's Island, it does feel a tad...Bare...
Power B yeah, its weird, all these games have shy guys and what not but no one really talks about this game like the other ones. But hey, were talkin about, so thats somethin
the gba version of this game was one of my first videogames and i still hold it dear. I really love this game, although i play a lot with luigi (he became since my favourite character of the series)
Also, the floor he could stomp through, the mechakoopas that can be thrown at him, the bombs that he can be thrown at, targets that destroy his hot tub, large glowing switches that act like the axe, _glass panels_ he could stomp through, giant POW blocks, a hat the can be commandeered to beat him up, leaving behind a machine that can be used to undo his thefts across time, a down special that leaves him open for punishment, a horribly imbalanced approach at golf that screws him over the moment he doesn't hit the ball dead-on...
Like a typical villain, Wart was overconfident. He didn't think anyone could challenge him, so he kept the Dream Machine in his throne room for easy access and ordering around. He also likely thought he had the Dream Machine under his complete control and didn't anticipate it helping Mario while Wart was right there.
@MalamiteLtd I noticed I missed to mention the Clock power-up and the Super Jump during the middle of editing, but I was too far along to alter anything. This is what happens when I try to do so many things at once.
I used to dislike the game because it was different but now that I’m older and can put gaming prejudices aside I think it's really cool. It's a lot of fun and very addicting, with very creative level and enemy design.
actually this is my favourite mario game. I grew up with the gameboy advance re-release and it was so cool, i discovered many secrets and had so much fun.
I remember having a blast with peach playing this game on gba. And at 7:00, Peach can be used to hover over entire obstacles, but i think on the level with fry guy, you can use peach to skip 2/3 of the lvl. It was really fun to experiment with characters in this game
This is the game I have to most memories with. I've played this one the most out of the classic Mario series. But again I've never beat it but this is a big change in game game play style. (Sorta) but it's not a bad thing. It can keep you interested for a long time if you want to marathon it.
1 of the best games, not just on the nes but in the history of gaming... without doubt my fav game of all time... as a kid it was just amazing and epic... brilliant memories
I find this game to be under-appreciated. I remember having a lot of fun with it as a kid (I had the All-Stars version). It was certainly a crap-ton more fun than The Lost Levels, which was just brutal
I'm a long time fan of the somecallmejohnny. He's a great youtuber and also a great reviewer. I love how he goes through the perfect details in games and understand what is awesome about it or bad about it.
I find this game so underrated. Maybe it's the nostalgia factor since I played this game so much when it came on the GBA but it's got so much charm. Sure, it's got it's problems but it can be quite addicting.
I think I actually beat this game before. Wasn't this re-released on the Gameboy Advanced call Super Mario Advanced? I remember buying the guidebook to this game to find every nook and cranny.
World 5's boss is indeed named Clawgrip. When this game was being made, someone made a typo while typing out the name. One which was corrected when this game was remade for the GBA.
I have lots of nostalgia for this game, as the Super Mario Advance port was the first 2d Mario game I played any significant amount of. Yeah, it's not perfect by any means, but I'd like to see how well an updated sequel would do.
One of the levels in this game has only one mushroom, which really pisses me off. Can't tell how many times I blew through lives trying to find a second mushroom, only to find out on GameFaqs several years later that there was only one.
"I agree that game is hard but that's no reason not to release it somewhere else." The rationale was probably if the game is too hard, it won't sell enough here to justify releasing it. It's not the only game to be Japanese-exclusive due to its extreme difficulty.
+Rebel HD Trust me, It's the best one of them all. save by levels infinite continues Completion Bonus and it's easier with again infinite continues and you get hearts by killing 2 enemies in a row. Not 8 (Yes, it's still hard as s**t)
Actually liked this one a lot, probably more than 1 and 3. It's obviously a lot different than the other Mario games but the gameplay, art style, and music all made it great. The character sprites were all good and this was made still back in the earlier days of the NES. Also, this was apparently supposed to be the original SMB2 in Japan as well but they decided against it for whatever reason (too different?) and then it became Doki Doki Panic there. It's not really that it was an entirely different random game they swapped sprites on as many people think.
I'm sure Johnny is not going to read this (2011, lol) but I will write it anyways, maybe someone wants to read it, lol. This game is not a dream of Mario, and actually happened, Subcon is a kingdom that somehow exists in a world made of dreams and can be entered while dreaming. It was explained in a pseudo-sequel called BS Super Mario USA which expands the story and world of Subcon. There's even a King and a very pimp Buttler that uses the powers of the Stars to ask Mario and friends for help . Wart comes back for this one (And overthrows the King for plot convenience), so he appeared in 2 games besides Link's Awakening. The game even would stream an Audio Drama that narrated the story while playing, or even talk about secrets or power ups.
Doki Doki Panic is still a true Mario sequel because it started development as ideas for a mario game, but was rethemed after Nintendo got the TV license.
"If choosing a girl in a pink dress isn't your way of skipping levels" Think for a sec, and count how long it took for you to realize Maria Maria is Princess Peach
This Maro 2 can actually be pretty hard if you don't do certain things in the way you play. This success of this game SIGNIFICANTLY depends on getting lives on the bonus levels since 1ups are very scarce unlike most other mario games including Lost Levels. Another factor that can make this game hard is the pace you chopse to go through on each level. With Most Mario games, you can go fast and have almost just as much chance of dying as if you go slow but not in this game. The success of this game is designed so you HAVE to go slow and take your time through the levels. The way the obstacles and types of enemies are placed require a strategy of taking your time to really go slow, be patient, and really asses everything before proceeding. There is no time limit not to mention. Many good gamers on the other platforms are often tempted to go fast but with this game, that's where this game can get you!
I always liked this game,it still felt like a Mario game despite being completely different,in fact I remember liking this game more than the first Mario for awhile because it was so vibrant and I liked being able to choose different characters. Also it made Mario 3s return to the original style much more appealing.
Super Mario Bros. 2 is probably one of my most favorite Mario games ever with Super Mario World right behind it. However, my favorite video game ever is Doki Doki Panic, but I think because it's just not a Mario game and completely original for it's time.
Adam Anouer Ganon's a classic Legend of Zelda villain. Plus Johnny's got a point. Most weapons generally have no effect on Ganon. The Master Sword is the most potent for dealing with him. Hence the comparison.
5:28 An easy way to kill the fire boss is to stack the shrooms up high enough so that the small fire dudes can't jump across it, make them all clump up at the base of the shroom tower and then end them in one swell swoop.
Many nostalgic memories of this game. Not this version, but as a launch game on the Game Boy Advance back in 2001. Man I loved that system and that game.
I'm rewatching the majority of Johnny Vs. and... Oh god, I ADORE that outro music. Jazz + Nintendo music? Yes please! Anyone still here have a source to it?
+somecallmeJohnny Mouser came back in Mario Party 8 on the Shy Guy Express Board and if you land on a certain space you will have to guess which train car he is in from memory of when you were in the train.
I'm not sure if someone already posted this but the hearts are not at random. They float up the screen when you kill a certain # of enemies. I believe 5 or 10.
Plus... Clocks could also be pulled from the ground, which temporarily freeze enemies in place. You find a clock when you pull five big vegetables from the ground. The game also featured a charge jump. If your character crouched for a while, they would begin to brightly flash. Immediately jumping gave you a higher jump. Handy for Luigi. Oddly, throwing Mushroom Blocks at a Key many times (10-15?) kills its Phanto curse. (All-Stars made the key flash when it worked.) Try it in World 1-3.
so, Johnny, have you gotten a Famicom + Disc System + Doki Doki Panic already? and how long will it take you to start the next Zelda Marathon? you announced it in December, and you still are stuck with other, lesser games (though I really like Shovel Knight and Shantae)
TheMole2005 He will get to them, just be patient, i'm still waiting for that damn Metal Gear Solid Marathon he's doing this year but the Zelda Marathon will be enjoyable since he did say that he has never beaten Skyward Sword
I am, it's just this: Skyward sword is the most polarising Zelda game out there, even more than Zelda 2, so I'm really excited to see his opinion I'm glad though, that Shantae will be next (I love that series, it's amazing)
well, it was good, but lacked in so many points Fi for example sucks, I hate her the Imprisoned is a horrid boss the Soundtrack is pretty much forgetable and the flying was just unnecessary now for the positives: the story was interesting, the Overworld was pretty and well designed, the dungeons were pathetic, yet beautiful and I really liked the combat as well as items Skyward Sword is a mixed bag to me
TheMole2005 yet the first 2 things you mentioned lacked in your view are in Hyrule Warriors, but i agree with you on the negatives but with the positives i also agree on, lets hope Legend of Zelda Wii U is a great game
"over 25 years later who the hell remembers Mouser?"
*raises hand*
WrathofHiei I seem to recall Mouser being featured often enough in the first DiC Super Mario Bros. cartoon. He was King Koopa's second in command (that version being a blend of Bower and Wart). Then again I (overall) liked the enemy designs in this game and perhaps because I'm not as good of a player, I found them threatening enough.
WrathofHiei Mouser really needs to reappear as a boss in future Mario games. He was so badass and cool!
WrathofHiei 3434343 2424 ok
WrathofHiei *nearly 30
The only reason I remember Mouser was because of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. I remember in the mid 2000s we had Netflix and I watched it on there since my dad remembered it and he remembered liking it.
"Its like Ganon giving you the Master Sword before Duking it out" Or Majora handing you the Fierce Deities Mask.
Yeah but majora did it for fun
Or porky minch handing out the new years eve before battle
Or like Dr. Wily begging for mercy from Mega Man.............. Wait 🤔....
OR a Meta Knight giving a Kirby a SWORD before an opening battle.😉 How STUPID, right? 😆
a major boss healing you to max before fighting
The hearts aren't random. For every five enemies you kill in the same stage, a heart will appear.
That is if you defeat 5 enemies in a single throw, or with the Superstar, but in the GBA version you only need to defeat 2 enemies in a throw to get a heart or use a shell to knock 1 enemy, or at least a big enemy
So THIS game is why Peach can hover in Super Smash Bros.
Not just that. It's also the source material for the "Vegetable Pull" special moves she's had since Melee.
Found the 10 year old
She can in Super Princess Peach for DS as well, once you get the Floatbrella.
Technically, according to the story, the Dream Machine doesn't belong to Wart. He stole it from... I forget who, but it doesnt wanna work for him, therefore it's working against him
Lol
I actually really like this game...
Agree makes me happy and not sleep.
Joseph Ed Reed He never said it was bad, though?
It’s my favorite of the NES Mario’s. I could never get behind the flow of SMB3 to like it enough (World on the other hand, heck yeah).
Not that I don’t appreciate SMB3 for the huge amount of stuff it added after SMB1!
I like this game too, but I forgot how hard it can be

Shigeru miyamoto worked more on this game than the original smb 2 "the lost levels". Then Doki Doki Panic was changed back to a Mario game and it became what it was originally supposed to be.
Fun fact: Doki Doki Panic was originally meant to be Mario 2, but was changed earlier in development due to an agreement with Fuji TV (Gods of Anime).
6:14
More like Ganon giving Link a quiver of Silver Arrows
2:15, I just love it when he screams like that.
***** Ah yes. The scene where he picked up that Bob-omb.
+Heath Wilson (Sir Ike, Hero of Crimea) He does scream though?
SquidofBaconator
I'd say it's more of a squeal.
4:52 It happen again.
I always wanted them to bring Mouser back. He played a big role in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and if they can keep reusing characters like Birdo then there's no reason why he couldn't make an appearance now and then.
I always liked fry guy too. Characters with shades still cool!
if anyone is curious about the hearts that refill you health meter, if you kill 5 enemies one appears. if you get 5 cherries a star appears for you.
I heard Super Mario Bros. 2 just being a sprite swap is just half the story.
Someone told me it was orignally supposed to be a Mario game, but because it was not Mario enough, the sprites got swapped to the new Doki Doki Panic sprites.

Don Doko Don 1 and 2 (From Arcade to Platformer)
Donkey Kong 1 and Jr and 3 (Each one is totally different)
ToeJam & Earl 1 and Panic in Funkotron (From somewhat Roguelike to Platformer)
And many, many more.
***** I forgot where I heard it.
25 years later, Super Mario 3D World brings back the charm Super Mario Bros. 2 gave us, and added cat suits!
If that game had so much charm, then why did I sell my copy to a pawn shop?
From what I played of Japan's mario USA, it's an upgrade of the mario 2 we got. They upgraded our upgraded version
you know i think its about time for Wart to come back as a major boss for the next mario luigi rpg. maybe a story like professor E.
RIP AlphaDream.
SUPER MARIO BROS 2 BAYBEE!!! THE KING IS BACK ! IT IS DA BEST!!!!!
The hearts aren't actually random. They spawn whenever a certain amount of enemies are killed.
8 enemies to be exact 😊

I believe it's 5 in the Mario All Stars version.
My favorite Mario game on the NES. Throwing dudes into dudes is infinitely more satisfying to me than just landing on them. I also like Yoshi's Island more than Mario World, so maybe I'm a maniac who enjoys launching objects at shy guys, who knows

Power B well to be fair, Mario 2 is a Mario game where jumping on enemies doesn't kill them. I'd say the black sheep thing is a little warrented.
SolidSnake684 Good point. But still, Isn't it funny that SMB2 has been more-or-less forgotten about by all but it's creator?
Power B yeah, its weird, all these games have shy guys and what not but no one really talks about this game like the other ones. But hey, were talkin about, so thats somethin
I don't blame u. Yoshi's Island is a _damn_ good game. Too bad it's by far the BEST on in the _entire_ series
the gba version of this game was one of my first videogames and i still hold it dear.
I really love this game, although i play a lot with luigi (he became since my favourite character of the series)
I grew up with the NES version, and I had a lot of fun with Luigi, myself. despite what Johnny says, that flutter jump is actually quite useful
You know Bowser does have an axe on his bridge and take it he dies so Wort is not the only one.

I have the All Stars port on the SNES

"HOLY SHIT,THESE ENEMIES ARE BORING"-Super mario bros 2 in a nutshell.
+nintendogamer2015 i disagree (maybe I'm just shit this game though)
+Theo Dias ahem you mean super Mario bros 2 USA in a nutshell
Theo Dias the game is far from boring, best mario game ever
windextor345
How would your skill at the game affect your opinion on the design of the enemies?
Theo Dias Mario 1 had boring enemies, Mario 2 was better in every way
1 of the best games, not just on the nes but in the history of gaming... without doubt my fav game of all time... as a kid it was just amazing and epic... brilliant memories
the ROCKET! at the end made me die XD
I have found as I have grown older I have begun to love this game more and more. Its probably my second favorite Mario game behind Super Mario World.
0:15 that is a south park reference Johnny?

The main caracter sprites in supermariobros 2 are the best looking sprites of any mario game on the nes, even better then mario 3.
I agree. I never understood why marios overalls are black in that game. It should be dark blue like in this game.
6:13 Its also comparable to Bowser just pulling the axe down and jumping into the lava.
I find this game so underrated. Maybe it's the nostalgia factor since I played this game so much when it came on the GBA but it's got so much charm. Sure, it's got it's problems but it can be quite addicting.

Anyone remember this game was ported onto the GBA?
+Rebel HD Trust me, It's the best one of them all.
save by levels
infinite continues
Completion Bonus
and it's easier with again infinite continues and you get hearts by killing 2 enemies in a row. Not 8 (Yes, it's still hard as s**t)
There's also the Yoshi Challenge.
Joniden that's the 1st Mario game I've played tbh
My first Nintendo game, ever. I love it so much!

SUPER MARIO BROS 2 BABEEE
Doki Doki Panic is still a true Mario sequel because it started development as ideas for a mario game, but was rethemed after Nintendo got the TV license.
I remember mowser from the Mario cartoon.
Didn't he have a Cajun accent too?
i think so
I don't. Haven't seen that show since the early 90s
That's one of the reasons playing this was so much fun after watching the cartoon.
true
"If choosing a girl in a pink dress isn't your way of skipping levels"
Think for a sec, and count how long it took for you to realize Maria
Maria is Princess Peach
who's Maria?
Maria Renard from Castlevania
***** It's a joke, and besides,
You're a Damsel in distress
***** yep
I remember Mouser
super mario 3d world is the spiritual successor to this game
No its not it has littel to do with this game the only reference is the charcters difrent abilitys and the slot machine
Why do you say ba-bomb? Isnt it bom-om?
In actuality, the correct name is Bob-Omb.
Brian Stell That's funny, because the enemy's name is Bob-Omb... idiot...
ActiveReplay AR Well, that's not very nice...
3:30 Fun fact: birdo is cannonicly trans
Ok, but what kind of creature is it?
Birdo. She's like Yoshi
@@jjb1908she is the trans kami
Fun fact that video is 13 years old (2011)
8:56...three head-ache/eye sore inducing words... bubble man's stage
5:51 FUCKING BUBBLES!!!
I always liked this game,it still felt like a Mario game despite being completely different,in fact I remember liking this game more than the first Mario for awhile because it was so vibrant and I liked being able to choose different characters. Also it made Mario 3s return to the original style much more appealing.
I get it
Super Mario Bros. 2 is probably one of my most favorite Mario games ever with Super Mario World right behind it.
However, my favorite video game ever is Doki Doki Panic, but I think because it's just not a Mario game and completely original for it's time.
5:19 forward you sounded like Popeye! hehe
12 years later and he still doesn't have that famicom hahahah
You're right Wort is stupid. That'd be like Majora giving Link the fierce deity mask befo-...oh wait a minute. Uh, never mind.
Adam Anouer Ganon's a classic Legend of Zelda villain. Plus Johnny's got a point. Most weapons generally have no effect on Ganon. The Master Sword is the most potent for dealing with him. Hence the comparison.
+Soren Daein To be fair Majora gave Link the Fierce Deity Mask and that didn't break the game in half...oh wait yes it did. Don't mind me ^_^
if you look for 0:51 on the video slider thing, it shows Legend of Zelda Links Awakening for some reason, easter egg?
Unpopular opinion: I think this is better than super maro 3
Matthew Clerkin Me too!
wait, didn't that mouse boss appear in that train level in mario party 8? he was a bandit on the train (been awhile so i don't know if it was him).
7:00 feminists triggered
5:28 An easy way to kill the fire boss is to stack the shrooms up high enough so that the small fire dudes can't jump across it, make them all clump up at the base of the shroom tower and then end them in one swell swoop.
Many nostalgic memories of this game. Not this version, but as a launch game on the Game Boy Advance back in 2001. Man I loved that system and that game.
That moment when you realize Shy Guys and Birdo are only Mario series icons because of a fake Mario game.....
Hey you reveiwed this game on my birth day last year. I should have seen this a year ago.
It's funny to think how The Super Mario Bros Super Show was based on this game
Did anyone realize you could make the logs and shells fly in the air when you stand in them if you use a pow block when you stand on a log or shell
As someone said below, hearts are not random. They appear after killing a certain number of enemies....
Sonic Colors has made me love this game oh so much more thanks to your SMB 2 USA LP and the ending of this review ^_^
@zeoLightning I hear it's around 10-15. Either way, you have to kill enemies to make them appear.
Johnny, master of adding Awesome and HIlarity to his reviews.
I am, it's just this: Skyward sword is the most polarising Zelda game out there, even more than Zelda 2, so I'm really excited to see his opinion
I'm glad though, that Shantae will be next (I love that series, it's amazing)
TheMole2005
I can agree with that, that game took forever for me to beat but it was well worth it
well, it was good, but lacked in so many points
Fi for example sucks, I hate her
the Imprisoned is a horrid boss
the Soundtrack is pretty much forgetable
and the flying was just unnecessary
now for the positives: the story was interesting, the Overworld was pretty and well designed, the dungeons were pathetic, yet beautiful and I really liked the combat as well as items
Skyward Sword is a mixed bag to me
TheMole2005
yet the first 2 things you mentioned lacked in your view are in Hyrule Warriors, but i agree with you on the negatives but with the positives i also agree on, lets hope Legend of Zelda Wii U is a great game
5:45 Johnny: Who the hell remembers Mouser?! The Mario cartoon (based on this game) apparently.
