I think it’s funny how some fans refuse to call Eggman “Eggman” and only refer to him as his “true” name “Ivo Robotnik” even though his creators called him Eggman from the beginning
In case nobody has ever tried this, if you type "Dr. Robotnik" in Google Translate and translate it from English to Japanese, you can see that it translates directly to:「ドクターエッグマン」or Dr. Eggman if you will.
Because apparently "Dr. Ivo Robotnik" sounds more "evil" and "edgier". It's funny because they totally missed the whole point of Dr. Eggman. He is an evil scientist who captures Sonic's animal friends to make his own troops, effectively (or not) turning them against Sonic, and is apparently not as edgy as they all think. In all honesty, you can blame SEGA of America for burning the name to some of their faithful followers.
I refuse to use the name Eggman because Robotnik it the only name I knew for him and I grew up with Sonic games in this era as it was only japan who had the name Eggman at the time and to be honest the name Eggman sounds silly. I only found out the name Eggman from Sonic Adventure. Also I always wondered what that EG text on Wing Fortress meant for years and sonic Adventure explained what it was and why Robotnik is called Eggman being egg shaped and all.
I just replayed Sonic Adventure and noticed something. In this game, Sonic and his friends use the name Eggman a lot as a joke, but the man himself insists his name is Dr. Robotnik. It is very funny and I wish they had kept that.
It's interesting how the Adventures tried to smooth out the transition from Robotnik to Eggman. First time he's called "Eggman" he appears to be upset by that, and still calls himself Robotnik, but freely calls his creations Egg-somethings. On Adventure 2 he is now full-Eggman but then it slams the shit out of you by naming his grandfather "Gerald Robotnik", thus making the Robotnik name officially part of the Japanese canon.
Yeah I always love how they did it. Things were called Egg Something even before he got the name, so you could say part of the reason Sonic calls him that is his apparent love of the things, that might be why he kept the name too. Also I saw someone else point out how his name also then becomes a parallel to Tails. @@nanight2353 bad future, that means its supposed to be bad, while others songs like palmtree panic (present) is pretty good, while you can put the entire american ost on a sonic.exe fan game and you wont even notice
The one thing that Cybershell failed to point out in this video were the lore inconsistencies between the JP Sonic lore and the U.S. Sonic lore. The games followed the Japanese lore, which you can read in the manuals of the games. To make things short, the JP lore had a mythological feel to it, mentioning gods pulling the strings, ancient events causing the events of the games, a Shonen vibe to the series, and the games taking place on an alternate reality of Earth. Meanwhile, America had its own version of the lore, focusing on freeing a world from Dr. Robotnik, with it being inspired by American cartoons, and the setting was another planet called Mobius. By _Sonic Adventure,_ SEGA decided to make the Japanese lore canon, yet they didn't tell Americans what the lore was about! It felt jarring for American Sonic fans to see attributes that were only seen in the Japanese lore, such as Sonic having a more laidback personality, (and he wasn't eating chili dogs until _Sonic Advance 3,_ as stated in the manual,) Tails being the mechanic, replacing Rotor Walrus, and the fact that Sally was nowhere to be seen in the games. Honestly, I'll blame poor communication between two branches that were separated by sea. The thing I like about _Freedom Planet_ is that Galaxytrail was smart enough to keep their brains in one spot, allowing for the lore to be consistent across any region.
Poor communication WILDLY understates the situation inside Sega at the time. Part of Sega Japan had basically declared war on Sega America and was doing everything in their power to sabotage them because they were worried Sega America would become the main branch due to the wild success of the Genesis in America vs the faceplant of a release it had in Japan.
Here’s one thing I never got, Japanese Classic Sonic’s different more turquoise shade (and is used for the Classic Sonic in generations and forces) while American Classic Sonic was the same shade of blue used for Modern Sonic today
4:00 186000 miles per second is actually 99.8% the speed of light, for reference. I know that they probably did that on accident, but it's nice to know that they're following cosmic speed limits with this fictional hedgehog
seeing the European covers being brought up was so nostalgic, as a kid I always liked Sonic one for being cute and cartoony, but Sonic 2 for being "cool" but was a little confused with the giant Robotnik and 2, never had Sonic 3 but had Sonic and Knuckles which used the black US one as a base went on for years thinking Sonic and Knuckles was Sonic 3 itself, and that they were so cool to add the ability to have Knuckles in Sonic 2!
Fun fact: The in-game model for Classic Sonic in Sonic Generations and Forces is different from the one in the promotional renders, staying completely true to the Japanese design
me too, i think the american design has a lot more personality shown through it. plus it’s what i grew up with lol so nostalgia obv. always loved how much attitude was put into it
Japan's rather odd with motivational methods like that, I remember the old Dragon Quest games had the goddess or God of that game talking to you the player, not the character in the game about what motivates you and how you view the world, and tells you to try to be positive and not blame others for your own insistence that everything is negative.. I mean jesus 30 something year old game.

NiGHTS is an unfolding stage, a breathtaking adventure through fantastic but dangerous places. Courage and skill determine the outcome of your incredible dream."

Absolutely! I'm so happy people other than me still care about him dearly cause everyone around me just despises him for no reason. Love the spikey blue boy
it warms your heart that a series that practically kept sega afloat for like 30 years is still popular? thats like saying its incredible that Mario games still come out to this day.
In general I really disliked the American story and designs for Sonic. The whole “planet Mobius, Conehead Robotnik, Mohawk sonic, etc” I’m really glad that Sega ditched a lot of that stuff as the series went on
Same, even worse with Mobius and the fact that it came from a mistranslation when Sonic 2 came out, it always felt so off to me and i grew with American Sonic, i just always preferred Japanese one since it wasn't so extremely tryhard or cringy, i mean "Christmas Island"? Sonic being from Nebraska? Mobius? Ivo Kintobor and so on? It felt so boring and souless to me, almost as if they thought i was so stupid i would be happy with anything regardless the quality or logic, meanwhile Japanese lore of Sonic was more consistente and interesting (too bad that's barely the case nowdays) but yeah, Japanese lore it's just infinitely better to me
Sonic Team ditched the Japanese backstory of Sonic, because none of them read the manuals. *Sonic Adventure does not even take place in the Genesis continuity, according to Iizuka.*
@@etherealhatred The Japanese lore is less consistent. Sonic Team never read the genesis manuals. They always hired writers that never played the games since the 1990s.
I loooove the original Japanese design of Sonic. The way they brought it back with a couple minor tweaks for Generations was great though. I hope they make future games with that design.
I've never understood why they changed Sonic's design on the box art in America. His original design already looks American as hell, with how it reminds of old American cartoons like Felix the Cat, yet they felt the need to change it????? Plus I think his American design looks worse. Also, I did notice the bigger eyebrows and the brow furrow of Classic Sonic in Generations! Though the brow furrow seems to only appear when he does certain expressions.
Natok the Watok I know Spyro was forced to have a redesign to be cuter for Japanese box art, because Insomniac made him too edgy looking for the target demographic/Culture. I think Japan did the same thing for America, making Sonic’s design more grittier and suitable for American culture at the time.
It just kept cycling between a few Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog tracks. There was also that part where Sonic himself answered questions people had been asking about him. Meanwhile, Fang the Sniper was listed as a major character and one of Sonic's arch enemies, alongside Shadow.
2:57 It’s probably just me but I feel more creeped out by Japanese Dr.Robotnik than the US version It’s his grin and overall charming appearance that makes me think of characters such as the millennium Earl from D. Gray man But I see eyeless robotnik and think “yo dude you ok? Did you lose your cane and wander from the retirement home? I can walk you back if you want.”
You know, for the longest time before I really got into Sonic, I always thought of Eggman as a joke villain and completely unintimidating. Like, at least Bowser is some giant turtle demon... thing. Then I played Sonic CD. Oh boy, the Bad Future levels really showed me how Eggman actually seems quite competent at turning the world into a hazardous polluted shithole if Sonic isn't around to stop him. EDIT: I actually appreciate this a lot. I like how Eggman outwardly gives off this goofy appearance and demeanor, but is still a genuine threat to the world.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Not to mention, the goofy look is easier to fall for than the demon look. It's easy to understand why Knuckles was tricked by Eggman, but stupid to believe King Acorn would trust Julian Kintobor due to the fact that he looks like an evil mustached version of Heavy Weapons Guy, who already looks intimidating. Also, Julian Robotnik's black & red glowing eyes and angry scowl? Not scary.

@@HumeAnn the people that hate sonic hate how lazy and terrible Sega is at making sonic games. you've got it all wrong lmao.
In general I really disliked the American story and designs for Sonic. The whole “planet Mobius, Conehead Robotnik, Mohawk sonic, etc”
I’m really glad that Sega ditched a lot of that stuff as the series went on
Was there any of it you liked?
I liked the name Mobius. I liked Robotnik being intimidating. Beyond that I agree.

I think that while the Japanese design looked Western, it didn't look _90s_ Western.

It’s his grin and overall charming appearance that makes me think of characters such as the millennium Earl from D. Gray man
But I see eyeless robotnik and think “yo dude you ok?
Not scary. I adore the Aosth Robotnik. Unironically as well as ironically, he is the funniest portrayal of the mad doctor.
He has this very very skewed views on morality. Claiming openly to do bad things, and that he's the villain, and he expects the world to love and respect him.
He's absolutely hilarious as a result. Long John Baldry did such a fantastic job making a cartoonishly evil villain.
also. i'd like to think even in america robotnik is wearing goggles or sunglasses.
Honestly, I like Sonic Mania Adventures' portrayal of Eggman better. He's funny and somewhat clumsy, with the looks to back him up.
Unlike that only scene in the one episode of Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog, Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik actually said Pingas as he said to Scratch and Grounder “SnooPINGAS usual I see”
