    I think Rhett and Link are a good example of an adult friendship. They were super close growing up and are still friends to this day. However, outside of work they don’t spend a lot of time together. Not because they’re not friends anymore but because life is busy with wives and kids etc. It doesn’t mean they aren’t friends anymore it has just transformed as their lives have transformed. Mutual respect is so important in this type of relationship. They exemplify this.

      Outside of the internet, I can think of Adam and Jamie from Myrthbusters or Penn and Teller. Adam and Jamie aren't close in real life, and pretty much have had enough of each other after working together for so many years. But hey respect each other and that's what made the working environment so good. When you spend that much time with somebody else, you have to disengage and have a private life. Same with Penn and teller, Penn says that Teller's meticulousness would drive him mad if they spend every waking moment together.

      they've also talked very openly about how they handle potential bad vibes. Link has talked on several podcasts about how he felt a little worried and left out at first when Rhett started making music, but instead of making some needless dramatic online beef they just talked through their feelings off camera. I really respect how level headed they approach everything in their career/friendship.

    I thought everyone knew Ethan and Trisha weren’t friends. They may have said they felt like friends, but I don’t feel they respected each other as people as much as they should’ve. Though they are funny together, they are always at odds. And not just in a surface level. They were always jabbing at each other and they dislike lots of the things the other has to say or believes. And the family stuff is a little messy and I feel put a wedge between them too.

      Honestly as someone who's watched every episode, I believe that despite all their disagreements, and although it started out as them being like "amicable enemies" I did get the idea that Ethan did truly come to see Trisha as a friend, idk about the other way around. But I think that that friendship *becoming* real is what led to the podcast's downfall because the jabs start feeling more personal once you actually become a bigger part of each others lives and it's not just content beefing. The family stuff obviously making it significantly worse.

    • @LibertyIndiaRose
      @LibertyIndiaRose 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@RubenDelight I agree, i've been watching the h3 podcast since maybe a month before frenemies and i think the antagonistic nature of the show stopped them from being genuine friends, because Trisha never felt safe with Ethan constantly poking at her, and Ethan felt he couldn't confide in her because of her tendency of spilling things she's been told. They didn't establish boundaries properly before starting the show. I was someone who watched that first episode when they were talking about money and Trisha didn't really understand how things were going to be divided up and i said to myself "That's going to be an issue if they don't make sure she understands what's going on from the get go" so i was not surprised at the 5% blow up sadly. I have things to say about how both of their personality types play into this, but people generally arent interested in that lol

    I feel like this phenomenon traces back to the peak of mtv and their interviews with bands. These interviews often depicted the band as a tight knit crew that were inseparable, which explains why the members’ solo endeavors were far less successful. Often these inseparable groups initially had that respect for each other but grew apart as their income/yes men/drug habits fed their egos. With TH-camrs and podcasters there are usually less drugs involved, but the hubris appears nonetheless

    • @rainbomg
      @rainbomg 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s odd because whether or not we are friends, we need other humans to survive. It’s almost like friendship evolved to help us stay around people bc we can’t always be the best predictors of when we are going to need people. I think bonds can be so tenuous when encountering stressors because most relationships would need to have a pure, unbiased foundation to rely on as a base to keep them solid and in tact before encountering any incentives or pressures that survival implies, and that’s just nearly impossible to find.
      Like, to have a pure, rock solid friendship you’d have to have chosen each other from a ton of other options, none better than the other, and then choose your friend based on their personality alone. _Then_ you’d have to spend years nurturing that friendship and building trust _and_ history before you could ever challenge it. Then the first few times it was challenged, both parties would have to make the right move out of a vast array of options, the best one for the friend to solidify trust in them. This relies heavily on the perception, empathy, integrity and similarity in values of both parties and the value to which they hold that relationship and in part, luck. Very unique and rare conditions to forging an incorruptible bond.
      More commonly, it’s a lot “safer” and definitely easier to find ones where we just let our own self interest and the mutually assured self interest of others work as a building block. So if, like jenga, if enough of those blocks exist as a _foundational_ structure and enough of them are pulled out (removed as features) the whole thing topples. If they come later and are lost, it’s more likely to stand. It’s why you can reconcile after some fights and not others, has the relationship suffered a loss of a fundamental feature? If a bandmate becomes more of a liability than a benefit, these losses are too foundational and their drug problems negate them entirely, unless you need them more than they need you (or you think you do). If the reward is less than the cost, people rarely are so bonded that they will endure personal cost at another’s expense (again, unless they have high insecurity or high risk/fear of consequences)
      It’s how more insecure people are easier to take advantage of, because they have a lower threshold to reach personal “gains” from relationships. It’s also why most hetero (and many non-hetero) women born before 1970 (and some after) were probably low key prisoners in their marriages, and at the very least forced to contribute more energy and effort into enriching the husband’s life than he had to put into enriching hers. Even now, women do more domestic labor and carry the majority of the emotional burden in hetero relationships, they spend more time and energy being concerned with the man’s day to day experiences and level of satisfaction than her own (am I pretty enough? don’t be a nag. he’s got a work trip next month, so I’ll make sure we know where the suitcases are, etc) keeping women powerless in society keeps them “agreeable” at home.
      rug roh my feminism barged in again

    I personally think that since none of the Red Letter Media crew see themselves as influencers or even celebrities in general, their interactions feel a lot more genuine. Chemistry is just having really good time interacting with each other. But then this made me think that perhaps I prefer finding people who I have chemistry with, much more than actual friends lmao? Some of my most memorable memories are unexpected times where I just had a blast, the time of my life, spending time with some people I knew. Do others get what I mean? If anything dead friendships, where over time it becomes increasingly clear that my friends and I have grown into very different people, are what I dislike the most. So maybe hanging out with people you have mutual chemistry with is what we're supposed to be doing?

I'm just speaking on what I know and what I know to be true is other moms and women my age complain about having no friends, but then actively behave in ways that won't make them friends. I can't tell you how many women/moms I've tried to meet up with or hang out with and they just don't want to. I would say it's me but they don't even give you the chance. It's really hard making friends. I blame social media for a lot of why people are the way they are.

    And finally, Donna, we get to the point of the video. JOHN CENA FOLLOWS YOU ON TWITTER?!
    I’d like to hear your thoughts on things like: Rhetoric, specific fallacies/arguments like tu quoque or conservative bias (as in, beliefs being further solidified when ppl are confronted with irrefutable evidence to the contrary, I read this wasn’t replicable, what’s up with that?), what’s the deal with that Colleen thing, what do people want from her? Is the best way to interact with minors (ha, Minor is also my last name tho) to completely avoid them? I don’t really know much about the TH-camr drama stuff, that’s honestly one of the top 3 reasons I watch your channel is to learn about who the heck these people are and what ppl watch them for and how public opinion can change so sharply, and why. I’m so much more informed bc of you.
    Love the channel, Donna!

    There's an interesting thing happening between tiktok friends also, it's even more fake than anything on TH-cam. TH-camrs at least discuss their videos and in fact communicate during filming and transferring (travel blog for example) a lot.
    Los Angeles TikTokers (fighting for being booked in acting industry) seem to be doing as much collaboration as possible with each other while their dance is just flip flop clapp jump run then caption it as "with me bestie @" That's hilarious.

    I think there's definitely a level of friendships. I did feel like I had somewhat close relationships with friends that I don't talk to anymore. A lot of them was just people I met through work or group events I went to. But then I have a friend from high school that I maybe talk to a couple times I year because she lives in a different state..but when we do eventually get together, we act like we used to when we were teenagers. But then I have friends that don't live in the same city as me now but I could technically still see if we wanted to, but neither of us really reach out to get together. But if we do eventually...we are still mostly friends, but there is that level of "distance" that we feel and it ends up with us just "catching up" and then separating again...but are they still my "friend?" Yeah kinda...
    I guess sometimes friendships are just surface level, but that doesn't necessarily mean you are besties.

    Ethan and Trisha were friends. I don’t think the definition of a friend needs to be so strict that it’s only real if it lasts forever. Friends come and go and a lot of times what makes you friends has to do with a moment in time and circumstance. Some may think that’s hollow but that’s just life. It ain’t all gotta be that deep

    • @omu6740
      @omu6740 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i actually agree with this. the older i become, the more i realize that things don't always have to be too deep. i have best friends, i have a partner, but i also have friends that i talk to every now and then and then go our separate ways and catch up once or twice a year. even so, i still consider them a friend.

    Ethan and Trisha are actually in laws which makes the fact that frenemies even happen is so bizzare, they also arent talking right now due to their spouses not being cool with each other. George, Logan and Mark Dohner friendship died when they mixed business into the mix same with team 10 most of the members were Jake's friends from Ohio but the house dynamic was toxic. Rhett and Link and Ian and Anthony are the only friends I knew were actually besties and would stay that way for life.

    I can't say I'm really into group content. In any group, I'll like max 2 people and the others are either annoying or I outright hate them. I do enjoy when 2 creators I like individually collab
    I loved Frenemies. I find Ethan and Trisha's content individually unenjoyable, but somehow as a unit they were great.
    Being different doesn't mean you will have conflict and being similar doesn't mean you won't have conflict. People have great relationships with siblings, parents, friends, lovers when they're very different. You just have to love each other and be willing to agree to disagree. Some people cannot coexist, but just being different doesn't mean that applies to you
