This was released in 1969. Back door man meant something totally different in the UK back then. He would be the man who sneaked out of the back door when the husband came home.

@Tina Gilbert No doubt. The band probably wanted to clarify the meaning, but "I wanna be then have to be your back door man" would have just ruined the flow of the song😅😅😅😅
There is no replacement for real talent, playing real musical instrument, without the help of digital processing or auto tuning. This came out in 1969. The older music is more warm and emotional because it was recorded on analogue equipment, whereas most of today's music has "colder" feel to it because of the digital production.
The rock back in the day singers had to know how to sing, no auto tune to try to correct a musicians voice like today. I find today that singers can't sing a tune in a bucket without auto tune. We had the real deal growing up. Raw talent. Many played several instruments and wrote there own music. It was a much cooler time for teen agers. We had crowds the size of football fields, 50-60thousand people and didn't have big problems. We were all there ti have a good time, we were busy dancing, singing, rockin, maybe a little smoke and we definitely snuck in alcohol. It was a different America back then and I'm so happy that I was a part of it. Great memories. Day on the Green. Glad you enjoyed!
omg! I'm laughing so hard.. I needed to laugh a little today, it was an intense day, so thank you!! I can't believe you didn't know about this classic! Please do more of these reactions to gems. Two songs to start, "Stairway to Heaven" off of Led Zeppelin IV, and "Since I've Been Loving You" off of Led Zeppelin III. Please react to the studio versions of these songs, NOT the live versions. The live versions were improvisational and unpredictable. The studio versions will give you a better appreciation for the magical genius within the songs, as well as the awesome production skills of perhaps the greatest music producer of all time, Jimmy Page (who is also Led Zeppelin's founder and guitarist). I'm really looking forward to seeing you react to these two masterpieces! Peace
Greatest rabbit hole ever created you've done two songs you only have a hundred and six more to go! trust me you want to follow this track! Google how many times led Zeppelin tracks have been sampled by the hip-hop community
I was 2nd row center at the Honolulu International Center for Zed Zeppelin, and the bass notes from "Whole Lotta Love" would actually move your hair and clothing. Seeing them live from 20 feet away for a 3 hour concert was completely incredible. That was 1969, and we saw Janis Joplin, Hendrix, The Doors, Santana, Quicksilver, Jethro Tull, Linda Ronstadt, and a dozen more classic rock bands live. What a time to be alive!
Ok - here it is: Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks. Monster song, at their very heaviest Blues Rock/Hard Rock best. Prepare to be carried away on the onslaught. Not metal , or speed metal, but HARD BLUES ROCK with the best driving beat, soaring harmonica and guitar, thunderous bass that REALY kicks in at the end, even higher level that the first part of the song. Drum licks have been sampled widely in hip hop over the years but THIS is the origin!
Also, one movie that I can think of off the top of my head that has a great 70's soundtrack is "Dazed and Confused". Have you ever seen that movie, Cliff?
I'm 70 years old. I saw Zep in 1969 when this song and album were released. I can confirm that we had the best music and bands back then. I love it when younger people discover the greatest rock band ever, Led Zep. You didn't mention how Bonzo kicked ass in this song. He was the greatest rock drummer of all time! BTW, in the movie Blow, when Johnny Depp walks through that airport to Black Betty, it makes the whole movie! I love it!
every member of that band was top 3 EVER at what they did!, they had nbo stand out member, they were ALL that good!!! no other band got close to that consistent talent! they had unmatched chemistry together too
I was born in 1963 and Led Zeppelin was so popular when I was in High School. They are still touring. Love Robert Plant's voice!!! All of the musicians in that band are top notch!
The stereo music of the 60's and 70's really used production creatively, the positioning of instruments and vocals was as much a part of the arrangement and total experience. In the very early days most released stuff was a mono mix, because the public only had mono radios and TVs, stereo was the preserve of classical and jazz albums, and even considered as very niche and a gimmick that might fade. As the pop and rock eras developed and stereo record players became affordable for most folks, the artists and the studios responded. So much of contemporary music has been so centrally mixed it may as well be mono, you just don't get much of that panoramic widescreen production. Another thing about those early decades is the experimentation and individuality of artists, and the variety within their music, never wanting to repeat any formula and constantly progressing their skills and influences. For bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or The Beatles for example, you need to hear dozens of their tracks to even get a glimpse of the mix of styles they could produce.
"Back Door Man" ... many old blues references - such as the song by Willie Dixon, 1960, recorded by Howlin' Wolf -- lover sneaking out the back door so as not to be caught by the husband Or, this variant: Allman Bros., One Way Out - slipping out the window because the other man is at the door.
You appreciate Zeppelin......I return the favor and subscribe. The music I grew up with was epic. Did not even know how much to appreciate it back then.......and its only gotten better with age. Timless.
You need to go down the Led Zeppelin rabbit hole. Start with the Led Zeppelin One album and go on a journey. There are hordes of people who come from hip-hop who end up being LZ's biggest fans!
"Back Door Man" was a lyric common in old blues songs, meaning the guy who sneaks in the back door to see your woman when you're not home. Singer Robert Plant threw blues phrases in a lot of early Zeppelin.
In Southern culture, the phrase "back-door man" refers to a man having an affair with a married woman, using the back door as an exit before the husband comes home. Dixon's lyrics include: When everybody trying to sleep. I'm somewhere making my midnight creep.
So back in THOSE DAYS the future of super groups emerging was so diverse imagine hearing Led Zeppelin , Pink Floyd , Queen , Rush , Fleetwood Mac , Bee Gees , Journey , all these yet all so different sounding and not like the Beatles or Rolling stones. We old guys and gals were having the best of times . So many other groups to mention but I'll let the comments take it from here.
About 20 years ago, it dawned on me that the instrumentation, the music part, perfectly depicts the various stages my big anxiety attacks go through. I don't get them like that anymore👍
It is so funny that so many people know nothing about Led Zeppelin and they were the biggest selling group in the 70's and considered the second most influential band of all time after the Beatles. The broke up in 1980 when the drummer drank 40 shots of Vodka at Jimmy Page's house, threw up and suffocated on his vomit. Now thats a rock star. LOL. They broke all of the Beatles attendance records as well. They are one of the top selling rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin is the group that forced the record companies to stop taking almost all of the money from the groups and give the groups a much bigger share of the pie. Zeppelin is also the group almost every future group copied their rock style from. From the way they dressed, played and the wild stuff they did while on tour, almost every band tried to copy them in someway. Even some rap music and other genres sample their music for their songs. Especially their drums. Jimmy Page the guitarists was a top 3 player of all time but he was a genius in the studio as he did most of the engineering for Zeppelin's music. Not many Zeppelin songs were in movies or commercials until the late 90's early 2000's. Jimmy Page blocked them from using them. He even wouldn't let Guitar Hero and Rock Band use the songs either. He felt that the kids playing the game should pick up a real guitar instead. But The Immigrant Song was used in Shrek 3, One of the Thor's and The School of Rock. Other songs pop up here and there and Kashmir, was redone over by P Diddy (come with me) for the Godzilla Sound Track with Page cameoing on it. Oh, "That 70's Show" named every episode of I think the 5th season after a Zeppelin song. Another show did the same thing too about 10 years after that. The other show was a end of the world survival type show I think on NBC. It wasn't bad but only ran about two seasons. Dam, forgot the name of it. Whats really weird to me though is that growing up in the 70's, we considered music from the 50's as oldies. And that was only 15- 20 years earlier. But this song is over 50 years old now. And by the way, Iron Maiden was one of those groups influenced by Zeppelin.
These guys were in the stone age of recording technology inventing techniques as they went along . It is historically important for young artists to know that this band is responsible for artists making the money they were due , They had an honest behemoth of a manager named peter grant (very imposing man) and turned the tables on the promoters that used to make all the money and giving crumbs to the acts . These guys changed all of that .
Led Zeppelin and Ren are my two favorite artists. Check out "Achille' Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin. I used to work with a rapper who'd rap over that song and every song from the album it's from. RIP Demarco Traynum.
Many, many rap songs have sampled rock sings, and many have used Led Zeppelin specifically. Google just the Led Zeppelin ones, it'll blow your mind, but there are endless rock samples for rap's biggest artists. So yes, it benefits you to listen to rock music for sure.
More LED Zeppelin! Next song(s) Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You, When The Levee Breaks, Kashmir, The Rain Song, House of the Holy, actually, Go to Led Zeppelin 1, first song, Good Times Bad Times, recorded in 1968, released January 1969, and keep going. There are 8 studio albums. LedHeds are extremely loyal and you will get a ton of new subscribers. You will love Led Zeppelin.
"Backdoor man" back then didn't have the same connotation that it does today. Back then it referred to an affair. The person would sneak in the backdoor so no one would see them.
Being from the south side of Chicago You may wanna check out music from Raymond Daniel Manczarek Jr. as also born and raised on the SOUTH Side of Chicago, graduating from St. Rita High School and at DePaul University and CO Founder of THE DOORS!............
LOL! Okay, listen ... Led Zeppelin were heavy into American Blues. Being a 'back door man' means going out of the back door of the house when the woman's husband, boyfriend walked in the front door, usually from working 10 - 12 hours a day to keep the woman in material things. It means being in a relationship and having another man on the side. In their song "Since I've Been Loving You", there is a line where Robert sings, "I open my front door, hear my backdoor slam." I do realize that there is another meaning for that phrase, but that's not how they mean it in their songs. :)
“Back door man” means a wife’s lover! Yes you should check out more rock music. I would highly recommend you listen to Led Zeppelin’s first album and check out the blues mixed in with that rude guitar Page lays. Prince also did a version of this song and it’s great! Thank you!
You might be suprised by LZ's range if you listened to Going To California Live at Earl's Court. Then check out their concert version of Kashmir from Celebration Day. Thanks for being open to this music - i'll subscribe right now. But please check out these two songs and then maybe we could get into a bit of Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood Live from the El Mocambo a little later on. Peace -
Cliff, you're doing a service by keeping this amazing music alive. People your age are woefully undereducated on the classic rock from the 60's and 70's and videos like this help the younger viewers interested. You have my subscription now, please keep doing these types of reactions. Suggestion would be to start simple with a straight rocker like Rock and Roll (yes, that's the name of the song. Pretty gutsy, huh?) Then try an early bluesy song like When the Levee Breaks. Then hit my favorite, In My Time of Dying.
Led Zeppelin were together and had albums from 1969 to 1980 when their drummer died. They thought is was best to dissolve the band when John Bonham died. They felt no one could replace him. Us fans agree. The only drummer that could is his son Jason. If you ever react to Stairway to Heaven, make sure to also react to Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors. It is sung by the girls from the rock band heart (Ann Wilson - singer and Nancy Wilson - guitar) The guys in the band didn't know John's son Jason is playing the drums on this performance. Jason and the choir are wearing Bowler hats because that was John's trademark hat. When the camera zooms in on Jason toward the end and looks up, he's looking at his father John in Heaven.
Love you brother. Thanks for what you do. I struggle with addiction. Obviously Cliff... You're loved and you're 1 of The Good Lords Warriors. God is great and God is good... Amen
There was a lot more heart & soul in music in those days. Even though there was a lot of drugs during that time, people put in much more of their soul when they recorded & performed. We so had the best music in those days.
That's nothing compared to seeing the live performances, You have never seen a band gel so well, Dazed & confused live from MSG is a total masterpiece IMO & Jimmy Page's guitar solo has to be seen to be believed.

Check out he song Dazed and Confused .I can't quit you baby is a classic as well.
I’m glad to see a younger southsider finding Led Zeppelin.
"Backdoor man" back then didn't have the same connotation that it does today. Back then it referred to an affair. The person would sneak in the backdoor so no one would see them.
Trampled under Foot by Zeppelin is great as are most of them.
It was also the theme tune for the old top of the pops when they did the countdown
Most Excellent reaction young Man.
Thank you!
The changes and creativity they brought to music helped inspire and move music forward into the HIP HOP music you love.
You might be suprised by LZ's range if you listened to Going To California Live at Earl's Court.
Then check out their concert version of
Kashmir from Celebration Day.
Thanks for being open to this music -
i'll subscribe right now.
Best Band Ever
The more music u love the better it's free
I never get tired of this classic....
Since I"ve Been Loving You studio version is an awesome song
I
I was 8 but had 5 brothers
Grew up on the best rock and roll
You're loved and you're 1 of
The Good Lords Warriors.
God is great and God is good...
Amen
There was a lot more heart & soul in music in those days. Even though there was a lot of drugs during that time, people put in much more of their soul when they recorded & performed. We so had the best music in those days.
Robert Plant is still singing and planning a tour with Alison Krauss in 2023. (27 Grammys)
Try their Gone, Gone, Gone.
That's nothing compared to seeing the live performances, You have never seen a band gel so well, Dazed & confused live from MSG is a total masterpiece IMO & Jimmy Page's guitar solo has to be seen to be believed.
