Ahh, the Rock And Roll Circus! The Stones put this together but Mick hated their performance. Brian Jones last time performing live with the band. The whole concert is interesting to watch, especially Jethro Tull performing with Tony Iommi on guitar, not long before he left to join Black Sabbath. Taj Mahal's set is great in this show.
Jethro Tull’s performance is 100% mimed. Mahal’s group was the tightest, and the Who were already honed as an incredible live act and fresh off their lengthy North American Tour. The Stones were just barely getting back into live music here and were nearly on a two-year touring hiatus. Plus, they’re dealing with Brian’s increasing futility and having to stay up for almost two days producing and coordinating the RNR concert. They didn’t even get to perform until 2 am.
Songs that drift slightly in time and tune lead one to relisten to the song because there is always a newness for your ears to the track. Imperfection is human.
They were influenced by American Blues masters and by early Rock 'n' Roll which was itself heavily Blues-influenced. And they played with Long John Baldry, who was very Rock 'n' Roll but also basically brought Blues to Britain and for a while was front man for a band led by a piano player named Reg Dwight. So that's where the bluesiness comes from.
The Stones were about to get Mick Taylor in on Lead Guitar. He wanted them to rehearse much more because they hadn’t done that much live stuff compared to The Who who featured here as guests. The next few years would be the greatest rock & roll band in the world.
They had barely played live leading up to RNR Circus. Internal factors (especially Brian’s deterioration), as well as external factors (legal issues and harassment from the British authorities), really prevented them from honing their live act. They were nearly on a two-year touring hiatus when this was made, and the Who were literally fresh off a lengthy North American Tour. As you stated, they didn't perfect their live prowess as a cohesive band until Taylor joined and prepared for the 1969 North American Tour. By the 1973 European Tour, they had become a war horse and were incapable of an “off” night.
The only thing cooler than Mick n Keith- is meeting Mick n Keith! The fact that they're still alive n kicking, the sympathy seems returned. *Bongos are small(mini) ones, these are congas- more specific 'tumbas'.
Yes, yes it is. And you're the first big reactor to react to the best live recording of it ever done. (by the way, this was the Rock and Roll Circus BBC broadcast. John Lennon does a performance of "Yer Blues" on the same special broadcast that is utterly transcendent, you may want to see if you can find it)
NOW you need to watch a more recent and polished version than this early one! Songs you MUST listen to: GIMME SHELTER SATISFACTION CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT MIDNIGHT RAMBLER and so many more!❤
Jagger was really high on amphetamines because he was essentially the producer/coordinator/director of RNR Circus. He was up for 48 hours before performing, and the Stones didn't even get a chance to play until 2 am.
I'm gonna keep saying this in every video if necessary, but you have to react to Kawaki no Ameku by Minami, amazing song, gives me goosebumps every time I hear her scream.
This Stones video looks like it was recorded within a few years of the infamous December 1969 concert at the Altamonte Motor Speedway that was featured in the documentary film "Gimme Shelter"! The way Mick sings the song AND the way he is dancing is pretty much exactly like he was doing it at that performance in Altamonte!! Thankfully the song did not conjure up an act of murder as it DID at that concert!!!😮😢
The Rolling Stones rock'n'roll circus was recorded 'live' to broadcast as a TV special, don't think it quite got broadcast as when reviewing the film, The Stones noticed that one of the support acts (The Who) effectively stole the show (according to one rumor). So, this is not a studio take where even then they would do several takes, maybe even stitch them together. but a live performance. Keith Richards look young there! Also the very last appearance of Brian Jones with the band... The Audience is a Who's who of the era. John and Yoko, Eric Clapton, Ian Anderson, and stepping in that week as a stand in guitarist for Jethro Tull, a certain Tomi Iommi
Thanks for the explanation. This is probably the first time in 60-odd years I can actually appreciate Mick Jagger's big mouth. 😮😊😅. Oh..and my favorites: Miss You and Honky-tonk Woman and another one I forgot the name..Tumbling Dice?
I do love this song, but I'm not sure it's their best. My personal opinion, "Gimme Shelter" is on another level above this. Merry Clayton's voice-crack gets me every time.
A complete, accurate history lesson accompanied by the eternal question ....... If Satan simply suggested these acts and man followed through with that suggestion, is Satan to blame for suggesting it or is man guilty for acting on the suggestion?
Loved this reaction. Thanks for doing it. And thanks for acknowledging the mistake of calling congas, bongos. But to be fair to you, I’d say almost every YT reactor makes the same error. Eventually, as with so many examples of usage, someday, the big drums will probably also be called “bongos”. Maybe they will be called “big bongos”.
Yeah my bad! There is something about the similarity in the words that just intertwine them in my brain. However I think this video has fully unhooked that connection!!
@ 😎 if this should be our worst problem, we are blessed! Great reaction. And you could not have done most of this analysis without it being a recording of a live performance. But someday, so yourself a favor and try and listen to the original studio recording which is a masterpiece. And the percussion even pops more on that one. And they may also be bongos! Because there’s even more percussion on that.
Interesting comment about auto tune in the 90s. Funny thing about the rise of auto tune, as it's use increased, concerts went from being about music to being about choreography. Sad.
I don’t believe I’ve heard any other band use “politesse” in its lyrics, just like Queensryche is the only band I know of with “raison d’etre” in its song lyrics.
Lucifer walks among us all by many names including Lucifer and Bealzebub and Moloch and Mephistopheles and so on... He is the mirror of our evil souls. He demands your Sympathy and Taste in this song. Matching the Holy and Unholy as a Mirror to confuse mankind to choose evil over good. I think The Stones got it right when no one else did it 1966. How do have Sympathy for Evil? Fear! Truth is Scary. Lies are death. Overall, it's a great song that makes you think. Savage and ferocious! ❤
Here's a collection of great songs to react to. (One I think You may have already done).😊 It's the video of the band *TRIUMPHs* whole set, at the "US Festival 83". (That's us, not u.s. 😁) th-cam.com/video/kHVGKivnFZg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9Cme7qB75IKIayIN
The Stones had and unusual ability to blend really serious dark lyrics, with really peppy music. This is a good version, but you need the studio release to get the full effect. But best song? Nope. You Really need to hear the studio version of Gimme Shelter. The female singer performing with them (who got dragged out of bed the wee hours to record a few lines) laid down one the most impressive vocal tracks in rock history. Plus, there's a bit of a message to it.
ok SINCE YOU DID THIS SONG...you really really need to now follow it up with THE BEST SONG from that same show, and that's The Who doing "A Quick One (While He's Away)." THEE performance that made The Rolling Stones shelve this WHOLE made-for-tv show for over 30 years cause they thought they sucked and The Who blew them away...INTRIGUED??? you should be. also you should recognize the song from the awesome Rushmore movie with it's amazing soundtrack...assuming you are well steeped in 90's pop culture that is. (I personally put Rushmore along with Trainspotting right behind Pulp Fiction as the best 90's movies.)
(8:15) "You can find that sound by pretending to be a sassy cat. Rrrrawow..." Or if you know the song, you can just sing it the way he sings it to make that sound... which is much less gay, for a man, than trying to be a... sassy cat 🤣😂🤣
My favorite Stones song is "Mother's Little Helper" or "Paint It Black". My favorite album is "Some Girls". He may be out of tune on this recording, but is the studio recording out of tune? I never noticed.
I think, Beth, if you had watched the studio lyric version of this tune your whole demeanor through it would have been totally different, as you would have been forced to listen to the words rather than watching Jagger prance around.
With you're little hood and cape deal... You looked ever so slightly like "The Queen" from the cover of The Warning's "Queen Of The Murder Scene" album. The studio version of Sympathy for the Devil is one of their best songs, this is from the Rock 'n' Roll Circus, which the Stones didn't release for many decades because their performances were so terrible.
I really like your work here on TH-cam, you were talking about how the size of the mouth influences a singer's voice, take a look at this video if you can: th-cam.com/video/lkRe-6evscY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9fq8yksebaj4vRZm Two very important artists from here in Brazil.
