I've beaten hell difficulty using Athena's Wrath with a bear druid, pretty standard build, no fire claws, used maul and HoW basically. It's quite a good weapon, on the druid it has very fast attack speed, add the IAS in the weapon and you're really fast, it was +3 to drd skills. Is it the best weapon? No.. but hey.. I was in single player, it dropped and it was awesome. No complaints at all.
Okay, I have decided to post this. I think you are sleeping on Woestave, which I believe should be high S tier. It isn't as powerful as multiple runewords or Tomb Reaver/Reaper's Toll, but this unique when combined with a budget merc setup (treachery and a vgaze with a plain ias jewel in it, for example) and a shael rune in it completely trivializes Diablo Clone for any build in the game. You have the 50% slow which is DClone's slow cap, you have high open wounds to kill his regen, and you have 2.5 hits per second (5 with jab) with budget gear. Against dclone, this combination is absolutely insane and can't be found on any other weapon in the game. DClone struggles to fully cast things consistently and moves much less slowly, making him easy for your character to dps down while your merc tanks him and stops him from regenerating health. You may have to revive your merc a few times depending on the situation, but I have had a level 80 merc with this setup tank the entire fight without dying. This method is tedius and slow going, but any build in the game can utilize it and fight dclone themselves rather than finding a service to do it for them. To get this combo from another polearm, you would need to put an um rune in a kelpie snare, which would have a slower attack speed and only 25% open wounds chance, not to mention kelpie's 75% slow would be only capped at 50%. There are harder hitting polearms or better overall polearms for dclone, however Woestave is comparably pathetically easy to find. For how early on you can get it in a ladder, the polearm is broken. It is a unique I recommend every player that doesn't have their main character built to take on dclone carry one of these in their stash. Insane item for the value.
I was using an upgraded Woestave on my zookeeper's merc. This was a bad combination with an upgraded Rattlecage: he kept freezing and shattering the monsters when not making them flee. Now he uses a big Honor and some big set armor, breaking out the Rattlecage as his boss-killing suit (CB).
No.... It just basically out class all other runewords for 2 handed weapon for fury druids. For fury druid its BIS weapon. Not even a single runeword weapon( not even BoTD +60%ias or Griefs PB can do it) can ever reach 4 frame fury which id massive on its own. Then, you look at all other stats on it, it's just one of the godliest melee weapon in the game. Without CB seems a problem, but who needs it with such insame dmg on it. Some mad scientists do some calculation for theoretical clear time for ubers run with fury druid, it beat every weapon except perfectly rolled rare giant threshers. We are talking about 3os eth, of course. Btw, TR is s-tier(only s- tho) in the video, dun gonna to complain too much.
Severely underrated the Hone Sundan. Eth Hone Sundan, cube upgrade, socket with 3x Shael, put it on a merc with GFace and Fortitude, and watch him OBLITERATE magic immunes, bosses, ubers. Absolutely amazing for a Hammerdin, Auradin, Bone Necro, or melee--anything that doesn't need Infinity to function.
Hey MrLlamaSC, a little suggestion for one of your next vids: bugged skills and chances/indications that they'll be fixed in d2r or not. Exemples: - Channeling skills doing only 1/3 of listed dmg: arctic blast, inferno, inferno trap. - "Sequence hit" skills that will miss all attacks in certain conditions: zeal (pala), fury (druid), fend (zon), strafe (zon) - avoidance skills: dodge, avoid, evade can cause the problems above and even the animation lock can make them detrimental. Some mods "fixed it" by removing the animation. etc etc etc Anyway, love your content MrLlamaSC!
I always wondered that too I always assumed it freezes only partially compared to freezes target or it freezes targets +3 more than a normal freeze? Not sure either tho
I like the resistances on Stoneraven as they are always a problem for spearazon's, its cheap too on ladder. I usually socket it with a 20/40 and wear some 20 IAS gloves for a decent Fend cycle. I also like the higher minimum damage for a better damage output. Upped Lycanders is better though, and cheap too.

Athena’s Wrath is frickin awesome weapon to transition to NM with a Werebear/Wolf build, the damage and speed are excellent cause of the fast base and the stats are incredible. This will honestly get you to mid Hell with ease till you get end game weapon, S- weapon you’re actually trolling or don’t know Shapers.
Having run a Fury Druid who luckily got my hands on this weapon, I can wholeheartedly say it's definitely a solid weapon. It does fall short towards middle of hell difficulty in terms of damage, but I'd say that's universally true for most non-elite weapons. ...hmm, I wonder how well Athene's Wrath would work if I upgraded it to it's Elite Base with the cube recipe... Anyone with experience who can share?
About Athena's Wrath, its actually honestly pretty darn great! Having tested playing around with various polearms, I can confidentally say that Athena's wrath is solid on a Fury Druid. Sure, it is lacking something extra to make it top tier, but what it got is still great. What truly makes it shine, other than +3 to druid skills If you're Lucky, is how fast it is! Druids are extra fast with polearms, and scythes are among the faster polearms, and with 30% IAS, Its a truly speedy weapon, similar to the ever popular Ribcracker. Its just reliable, super responsive and honestly puts in work. For a Fury druid build, Athena's wrath can sit among top 5 weapons of choice. Seriously give it a try before placing it in mid C tier below inferior polearms and spears.
I'm glad I watched some of your tutorial videos. I now have a much better knowledge base about some of the really important mechanics, especially MF! It's funny because I keep calling very similar rankings just based on my knowledge and it seems like I'm pretty close to the mark(with some exceptions of course). Keep up the great work, Mr Llama!
I found a Bonehew for my poor struggling offline WW barb while he was halfway through nightmare, just wow. Never had a functional Barb as a kid. Went from needing 4-5 passes through enemies, to them just exploding the second the tip of my bardiche grazed them. Truly a beauty, still pulling its weight in Hell. If I ever retire it for a lucky rune find, it will go to my Merc and be even more deadly.
Hone Sundan is an easy S in my humble opinion! I eventually upgraded mine to a ghost spear. Three shael's or two shael's and an amn and your merc is doing crazy damage.
would've put hone sundan at a low s tier since you got 3 os 45 cb and upped it's a ghost spear. so it could serve as an early ww weapon with decent dmg, the highest ww bp with 3 shaels and max range.
It just has a REALLY HIGH Dexterity requirements, only problem. But likevu said, 3 sdockets so its an easy fix. Rare damage jewel with -15 requirements on it
@@nightowl8363 like i said, i prefer 3 shaels since the highest ww breakpoint is way more important than some extra life. but i'd probably construct obedience in a thresher anyway before finding this thing. only the third highest ww breakpoint with obedience, but way less requirements and cheap and easy to make since a thresher gets 5 sox from larzuk.
it's a great early boss killing weapon for WW barb, the CB can proc several times per second... honestly, even for better geared WW barb, having one unupped on swap just for the first half of boss fight might be good strategy
Tomb reaver eth 3 sockets = tier S Tomb reaver 3 sockets = tier A Tomb reaver 1-2 socket Tier B The Grim reaper eth on a merc is awesome for the lvl requirement. Don't forget it's a fast ias weapon. The merc will kill anything on players 8. Eth version could be tier A or high B.
How successful could I expect to be with a 2H Zealot using a polearm or spear? I love the RP of using a spear and try to in all games. I don't really care about being super optimized but would like to be able to plug through all content. Seems like there are a few of these that could fit the build but curious if people with more experience in the community some useful insight. Thinking of going Zeal and Fanaticism and using points that wouldn't be going into HolyShield for Charge for nice thematic engage. Curious what suggestions people who see this might be willing to offer.
You should really incorporate attack speed in the tier list. Example: Spire of Honor gets A- because its damage is so nice, but The Impaler does over 30% more DPS not including other gear, if you include other things the higher attack speed will only make it better (gets more out of min/max damage, more use out Crushing Blow). But even worse the Grim's Burning Dead deal over 30% more as well and is D Tier, 3 tiers lower (and this is not just the fire damage, physical damage alone it outruns the Spire). And this is all taking a high level merc into account (98) if you drop to say 45 Grim is almost double the damage of Spire since Spire gets bonus damage per level (and 98 is not what you should rate them at as by that time it is crap even when upgraded, which is not worth the runes imo anyway). Ofcourse situational it could be better, but allround I think you rate the high base damage weapons to high by not including the very slow attack speed.
Glad woestave and kelpie got rankings they deserve. Woestave in particular is a near perfect budget antiboss merc weapon with the huge slow open wounds and prevent monster heal. I actually did a day 2 ladder diablo clone kill on hardcore using a wolf druid once with basically no gear because I found one for my merc and crafted blood gloves and had a weapon with some % crushing blow (forget if it was crushflange or black runeword). My merc died twice before I could get him in but once he landed a hit on dclone the slow let me slowly crushing blow him down relatively safely.
I have been picking up pole arms including reapers toll in free item drop games for the act 2 merc but since the act 5 merc has been working so well I dont know if I need them anymore
i’m playing on single player, so perfect bases are hard to come by. Should i just make my infinity in a non-eth thresher or should i hold off and make it in an eth thresher?
I did indeed walk the game with that Lycanders Flank on a spearzon. She made it easy too. Toward the end though I converted over to java because... well, of course spear just couldn't hold a candle to light fury.
Too bad none of the pole arms count for players, only the spears work with spear skills. It is kinda odd that the mercs can use pole arms as spears. Personally I think games under rep spears in general- they were the most popular battlefield weapon for a reason, yet games always make them clunky as hell. Kinda sad
Noooo, you are vrazy? Don't do it. Wanna play with spear? WW Barbarian (Hone Sudan with 3 shaels). Max WW, Spear Master and use two Angelic rings and the amulet). The rest is up to you.
I really didn't like how the tier list was already created and spoiled at the start of the video . This is far superior while also getting to see each item and the thought process behind the decisions.

3oa eth TR is just a BIS godliest weapon for shape-shifter. Even for merc its insanely good. Put a ber or two on it...CB would not be a problem anymore. Yes,it's expensive but its just showed how high of potential this weapon can get and how it can still be use in late late game.
The problem with two-handed weapons in this game for me is that they just don't worth it. It's almost always more profitable to wear a weapon and a shield with powerful effects, or even two weapons in certain cases. But at least your merc can benefit from them greatly.
I can't comment on hell, but all I can say is I started a spearazon with range 5 spears/pikes as a meme and it somehow worked with no trouble until mid nightmare which is as far as I played it. Polearms I think are mostly a lost cause however? I have heard they are used on some shapeshifting druid builds but that's about it.
Level 81 does hurt it. I sooo badly wanted to use it on my WW spear barb, I found a 4 skill ethereal Arioc's that was 5% off perfect ED. But BotD was so much simpler to use.
These tier lists are getting me more hyped for D2R than any of the trailers or build guides. Haha. I forget so many of these items exist. For the last 15 years I've either been rushing to endgame on NL or waiting for my rich jsp friends to get started on a new ladder season then still get rushed to endgame and fed some starter items. Lol. I'm excited to go through the game with what I find and actually use some items that aren't BIS for once. :)
Just found the meat scraper yesterday morning (last night for me) and did exactly that- threw it on my mercenary. Boy howdy does it help keep him alive. Edit: every time you said “high C” it just made me want to drink some ecto-cooler😅
Not trying to be an asshole but thought you might like to know it's 'hoh neigh soon-dan' rather than 'hone sun dan' - translates to something like 'Bone Rip & Tearer'
If the necro had any skill to use a polearm then grims would make sense, but not like this. Maybe the Devs scrapped a necro skill that was general melee?
The most disappointing thing about upcoming D2R is that devs decided not to change that existing items and skills system, there are SO MANY garbage items and skills which beg for rework...
In my opinion its great. So many games, like D3, are overloaded with great items. Which is why you have these silly green/red +1.03 systems. In D2 you get excited when that one good weapon drop.
I actually think that is a good thing, while upgrading crap gear is not a bad thing, Blizzard doesn't seem able to balance things anymore and upgrading is often making it OP. The team that makes D2r is there for the Visuals and minor changes (bug fixxes and a few simple QoL changes), I don't think they have the time to try and balance everything out. Changing the whole system, not tweaking a few stats, would A take a lot longer and B ruin the power of this game, but most items and skills don't need a rework, tweaking is good enough.

No reason to play a game where you can learn best builds just by clicking on the first link in google search page. @@heybuddy7772 None of the items or builds are "unplayable", theres just things we've learnt to make use of much more efficiently so that in comparison its bad. I have personally soloed all content in the game with an IK barb. Including uber trist and DC. But its "trash" compared to a barb decked out in runewords. Your mentality is literally the same mentality that lead to people sticking with older games, because newer games did apply the changes you want. Which wasnt well received. When every item is good, you simply stop caring about what items etc you have instead. They're all the same and part of the games charm goes away.
Kelpie better be an S, because for a Merc it is the supreme boss killer. Tomb Reaver is my Whirly Barb end game weapon because you can up the MF on it and get good damage as well
Grim's Burning Dead would be kinda fun if Poison Dagger was Poisoned Weapon or something like that and could be used on any weapons. Poison Dagger is simply a bad skill with how it was designed.
S tier was correct, everything else should have been 1 notch lower. Like if every other one of those rectangles was a paragraph, you forgot to hit spacebar.
There are really only 2 tiers: F tier - worse than insight S tier - better than insight Anything not in S tier is in F tier. Wish they would reset to patch 1.09 or nerf all runewords.
Looking back I think they were a bit lazy with class weapon uniques. They should have made at least one of each weapon type and rarity so 3 amazon spear and 3 amazon pikes

It's a niche weapon, but it get the job done. Sadly, only a Metamorph druid really benefit from it
I found an eth Hone Sundan once. Upgraded it, put a couple of Shaels and an Amn in it, and gave it to my merc. It was pretty godly.
The fact that Hone Sundan can roll Ethereal makes it an S tier for me. That thing is so good

athena's wrath is actaully VERY nice as a fury druid weapon for leveling in nightmare and early hell
Question: The affix "Freezes Target" I understand, but what about "Freezes Target +3"? What does the +3 mean?

it's a great early boss killing weapon for WW barb, the CB can proc several times per second... honestly, even for better geared WW barb, having one unupped on swap just for the first half of boss fight might be good strategy

Tomb reaver eth 3 sockets = tier S
Tomb reaver 3 sockets = tier A
Tomb reaver 1-2 socket Tier B
The Grim reaper eth on a merc is awesome for the lvl requirement. Don't forget it's a fast ias weapon. The merc will kill anything on players 8. Eth version could be tier A or high B.
How successful could I expect to be with a 2H Zealot using a polearm or spear? I love the RP of using a spear and try to in all games. I don't really care about being super optimized but would like to be able to plug through all content. Seems like there are a few of these that could fit the build but curious if people with more experience in the community some useful insight. Thinking of going Zeal and Fanaticism and using points that wouldn't be going into HolyShield for Charge for nice thematic engage. Curious what suggestions people who see this might be willing to offer.
You should really incorporate attack speed in the tier list.
Example: Spire of Honor gets A- because its damage is so nice, but The Impaler does over 30% more DPS not including other gear, if you include other things the higher attack speed will only make it better (gets more out of min/max damage, more use out Crushing Blow).
But even worse the Grim's Burning Dead deal over 30% more as well and is D Tier, 3 tiers lower (and this is not just the fire damage, physical damage alone it outruns the Spire).
And this is all taking a high level merc into account (98) if you drop to say 45 Grim is almost double the damage of Spire since Spire gets bonus damage per level (and 98 is not what you should rate them at as by that time it is crap even when upgraded, which is not worth the runes imo anyway).
Ofcourse situational it could be better, but allround I think you rate the high base damage weapons to high by not including the very slow attack speed.
Glad woestave and kelpie got rankings they deserve. Woestave in particular is a near perfect budget antiboss merc weapon with the huge slow open wounds and prevent monster heal. I actually did a day 2 ladder diablo clone kill on hardcore using a wolf druid once with basically no gear because I found one for my merc and crafted blood gloves and had a weapon with some % crushing blow (forget if it was crushflange or black runeword). My merc died twice before I could get him in but once he landed a hit on dclone the slow let me slowly crushing blow him down relatively safely.

I have been picking up pole arms including reapers toll in free item drop games for the act 2 merc but since the act 5 merc has been working so well I dont know if I need them anymore

Good eth Honesundan is S tier special u can upgrade it. You can put 2 shaels and amn and you got addicional life steal.

i’m playing on single player, so perfect bases are hard to come by. Should i just make my infinity in a non-eth thresher or should i hold off and make it in an eth thresher?
I did indeed walk the game with that Lycanders Flank on a spearzon. She made it easy too. Toward the end though I converted over to java because... well, of course spear just couldn't hold a candle to light fury.
This makes me really want to watch a Spearazon guided playthrough.
Too bad none of the pole arms count for players, only the spears work with spear skills. It is kinda odd that the mercs can use pole arms as spears.
Personally I think games under rep spears in general- they were the most popular battlefield weapon for a reason, yet games always make them clunky as hell. Kinda sad

I really didn't like how the tier list was already created and spoiled at the start of the video . This is far superior while also getting to see each item and the thought process behind the decisions.

Yes,it's expensive but its just showed how high of potential this weapon can get and how it can still be use in late late game.

The problem with two-handed weapons in this game for me is that they just don't worth it. It's almost always more profitable to wear a weapon and a shield with powerful effects, or even two weapons in certain cases. But at least your merc can benefit from them greatly.
I can't comment on hell, but all I can say is I started a spearazon with range 5 spears/pikes as a meme and it somehow worked with no trouble until mid nightmare which is as far as I played it. Polearms I think are mostly a lost cause however? I have heard they are used on some shapeshifting druid builds but that's about it.
With damage reduction gear they can be good as you can wade into packs and do a lot of damage especially spears on the Amazon with fend.

Level 81 does hurt it. I sooo badly wanted to use it on my WW spear barb, I found a 4 skill ethereal Arioc's that was 5% off perfect ED. But BotD was so much simpler to use.

Literally never got StormSpire as a drop in 1.08, 1.09, or 1.10. Ever. It was impossible back then to find one. Even for trade.
These tier lists are getting me more hyped for D2R than any of the trailers or build guides. Haha. I forget so many of these items exist. For the last 15 years I've either been rushing to endgame on NL or waiting for my rich jsp friends to get started on a new ladder season then still get rushed to endgame and fed some starter items. Lol.
I'm excited to go through the game with what I find and actually use some items that aren't BIS for once. :)

Just found the meat scraper yesterday morning (last night for me) and did exactly that- threw it on my mercenary. Boy howdy does it help keep him alive.

Upped eth Hone is possibly the best mercenary weapon, excluding runewords. 1 Ahm rune and two 15/40 and He can get trough the game by himself.
Compared to decrep from Reaper's Toll though, it's not worth much. Eth Bonehew with Shael/Amn is also bonkers.

The most disappointing thing about upcoming D2R is that devs decided not to change that existing items and skills system, there are SO MANY garbage items and skills which beg for rework...
In my opinion its great. So many games, like D3, are overloaded with great items. Which is why you have these silly green/red +1.03 systems.
In D2 you get excited when that one good weapon drop.
I actually think that is a good thing, while upgrading crap gear is not a bad thing, Blizzard doesn't seem able to balance things anymore and upgrading is often making it OP.
The team that makes D2r is there for the Visuals and minor changes (bug fixxes and a few simple QoL changes), I don't think they have the time to try and balance everything out.
Changing the whole system, not tweaking a few stats, would A take a lot longer and B ruin the power of this game, but most items and skills don't need a rework, tweaking is good enough.

No reason to play a game where you can learn best builds just by clicking on the first link in google search page. I have personally soloed all content in the game with an IK barb. Including uber trist and DC. But its "trash" compared to a barb decked out in runewords.
Your mentality is literally the same mentality that lead to people sticking with older games, because newer games did apply the changes you want. Which wasnt well received. When every item is good, you simply stop caring about what items etc you have instead. They're all the same and part of the games charm goes away.

Grim's Burning Dead would be kinda fun if Poison Dagger was Poisoned Weapon or something like that and could be used on any weapons. Poison Dagger is simply a bad skill with how it was designed.

It seems You never played poison characters as You always downgrade poison damage on the items. Its actually quite fun to play poisoners

There are really only 2 tiers:
F tier - worse than insight
S tier - better than insight
Anything not in S tier is in F tier.

Battlebranch does nothing special for 30-65 dmg two handed at lvl 25 req, it's trash tier. You can shop or gem a better grey weapon before that
Looking back I think they were a bit lazy with class weapon uniques. They should have made at least one of each weapon type and rarity so 3 amazon spear and 3 amazon pikes
