My own recordings of this speech were accidentally lost or deleted during our tour of the South Pacific. Fortunately, the New Zealand Association of Humanists and Rationalists had five cameras of their own and allowed me to mirror their edition. This was at the University of Auckland New Zealand on the 10th of March 2015, while en route to Australia for the Unholy Trinity Down Under tour.
These discussions do convince Christians and Creationists to let go of delusion and grasp onto reality. Myself, my husband, and my children all now understand evolution and how religion has it very very wrong. I was a firm believer for over 32 years. But I was able to walk away. Ashamed of believing? Yes. But so very relieved that I had the confidence to let it go and see reality for the first time in my life.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The majority of Creationist vs. Atheist debates can be summarized as:

To be fair, I think atheists have objections of various levels of quality. To summarise mine: the case for any particular god I've considered is refuted by having done a whole lot of things that never could have happened and supported by absolutely nothing whatsoever; the case for any god at all is neither necessary nor sufficient for anything of any real value; and the entailed consequences of belief range from the morally repugnant to brutal authoritarianism and mass terror. Creationists' responses I have seen or received have amounted to anything from "I'm the victim of you not having the same thoughts as me, you're bullying me, I'm the victim", through "Poop to you, you're a poopoohead" to "I want to kill you now".
Also they tend to just quote bullshit bible verses when they know they have lost a debate

I know it was something of a throwaway line, but "when you're determined to reject something, you'll use any excuse that works" is such an excellent phrase.
"Believing what ain't so" should be considered a mental problem. Sure sounds like a detachment from reality to me.
Believing what ain't so? Does that include premises or theories? Does it include children ? How many theories were proven false...how many of those who wrote it were medicated for believing what wasn't so?

So unless you slander me further through groundless accusations, Dawkins was referring to the following, "... life was most likely carried here in some form, probably by a celestial body from outside our solar system..."

Only half of Americans will even consider voting for an atheist, and even then, most of those who are willing to vote for an atheist are not more willing to vote for an atheist, so at best, only 25% would vote for him. Besides, he would likely run as a Democrat, and Democrats are less likely to vote based on party while Republicans typically vote based on party, which is why despite there being more Democrats, Republicans can still win elections without any issues.

New Zealand didn't send us Ray Comfort (I know, it was a joke). Ray, had he really cared about "saving souls", would have stayed in the far less Christian New Zealand, but he instead chose to come to the far more lucrative USA. It's all about the almighty dollar.

A Christian tried to claim to me that because the word Hades is in the bible, then the Greek god Hades is real and so are all the other ones. I never facepalmed so much in my fucking life.

However, Jesus, and God declared that the gods of this world are in fact real. They will be called upon to defend their followers, and will in fact condemn them to their faces. I watch your videos, and listen to Mat Dillahunty and the Atheist Experience when I can and think, "I am not alone". Thank you for what you do. Keep fighting the good fight.

@Jesus Christ Glorified Orthodox does not mean original, it means normal or usual. The othodox church is not the orriginal church, and would have horrified the first christians. My point is that all of those people have the same claim to the accuracy of their beliefs. None. That the church had been around so long before, but now most christians have adopted the views of Martin Luther or the reformed catholic church, further proves my point.

If i'm allowed to leave a tip i would like to propose a speech on "danger"; in these modern times i think it's important to not only talk about how factually wrong religion is, but also how dangerous religion can be (and has, in fact, become, lately). I live in Europe and islamic violence is on the rise like a storm here. I really think it's very important that people such as yourself, who are in a position to be heard, spread that message! I think the question should be addressed to religious people of all creeds "would you even mention god or Heaven to your child if you could foresee him grow to become an extremist? Or would you still indoctrinate him at the expenses of future innocent blood?". This is a question that demands courage and it's what they must answer to us, so we can really evaluate how much religion itself is to be blamed for extremism.

A Christian classmate told me that my way of thinking about life, the universe and everything (see what I did there =P ) scared the living crap out of him. It is quite possible that he chose to believe in his fairytale because the alternative was too scary for him to handle, unlike another classmate who was really a creationist (yes, we actually have a few of them here in 85-90 % non-believing Sweden). During a course at university, out of a class of sixteen people, four were some form of Christians and that is the largest group of Christians I've ever met outside of church.

I relate to this guy a lot. When growing up I believed in all of the "ghostbuster" requirements. As I grew up and started to think about things critically I shifted from a blind believer to an agnostic. I do not dismiss the possibility, but the more I listen to atheist speeches the more absurd the religious reasoning seems.
I have tried rationalizing religious beliefs through science. I have dived into some of the most extreme beliefs using this train of thought and found that the more I question it the more I realize religious people are asking the wrong questions. Most hardcore religious people are vehemently insistent that we must believe God exists. I can jump straight past this argument by saying it is possible for God to exist and that I will neither confirm or deny his existence. Just throw them a bone and say for this debate we will assume that God does exist. Getting past this debate allows for the really interesting questions to emerge. If God created everything why did he do it? Why is God obsessed with mankind "worshipping" him? Certainly any being powerful enough to create an entire universe would not think twice about anything us mere mortals cared or believed in. Was God a 13 year old kid who created us in chemistry class as a science fair project? Why does God need Jesus to die a horrific death in order to forgive our sins? This line of questioning can go on and on. As you dive deeper and deeper into this line of thought it seems more and more that God is not the benevolent and loving deity that we are taught about as children, but rather a petty and tyrannical power-hungry overlord. Such a powerful being would not need to destroy mankind to get people to follow him... ...so why all of the bloodshed? When you ask yourself what good and evil really are and then hold God to those standards the character you find is not the character we were all taught about.
I do not deny that there are things in this world beyond our comprehension. If there is a God, a Devil, aliens, demons, angels, etc. I can not claim to know who they are, what their intentions are, etc. Thus being the case, why on earth would I worship such things? To me, that is the utter stupidity of it all.

I would suggest that the rise of creationism in the US is greatly attributed to the ever widening income gap between the rich and poor. People are more in fear today and thus turn to pretty thoughts - i.e. faith - to subdue or quell such fearful thinking. I, too, once felt a "need" to have faith in something I wasn't sure about. But, as time goes on, I am repelled more and more by wishful thinking. Because I know that nothing changes in my life unless I take action to change it. It's that simple.
It was in part because of my stint as a poorer person that i stopped believing. My family and i were always Christians untill my mom divorced my dad and he fell into poverty and i realized a perfectly good god wouldn't do this and i actually read the bible and realized this is bull crap

It's funny because I had a long back-and-forth argument with a christian a couple of weeks ago about the topic of Chinese characters and the book of Genesis. There is a notorious book out there which makes the completely false claim that the ancient Chinese characters were deliberately designed as pictographic representations of the stories in Genesis. I happen to know a lot about the etymology of Chinese from a Master's degree in classical Chinese. I submitted a lengthy exposition in comments to a video made by a christian disseminating these same falsehoods to anyone who will listen, describing in great detail the kinds of "errors" of interpretation made in the book. I put "errors" in double quotes because these "errors" were obviously deliberate or at least committed without even slightly caring about what was actually true. There is a crippling problem operating here: christians are desperate to find any "evidence" they can to support their cherished beliefs. In the book in question, they think they have found a very juicy, comforting such piece of evidence. Like a dog with a bone, they don't want to give it up. If they actually CARED about The Truth, they would and could check my information and would quickly discover that it is accurate. However, most if not all of them, already demonstrating they are willing to cling to several other similar fantasies to make them feel good about their world, do NOT care if what they believe is false EVEN IF IT CAN BE PROVEN TO BE FALSE. They don't want to hear about it! This is SO SIMILAR to what Aron Ra is talking about in this video here. What I received in answer from the christian (Jack Flaws) was this response: "Thanks for taking the time for that long comment. But I'll have to set it aside because it takes God out of the picture." He, and the other christians here, will and do clearly demonstrate to one and all that they don't care if what they believe is UNTRUE as long as it makes them feel good. They are on a mission to purposefully delude themselves (and anyone else they can succeed in brainwashing) and languish in their own made-up fantasy universe. And theists like them don't stop at merely deceiving themselves--they allow their irrationality, their deliberate self-deception, and their fantasies to harm the rest of us, sometimes in small ways, sometimes in much worse ways. This kind of foolishness needs to stop. We see the fruits of this same sort of insanity on the evening news more and more these days.........

I find it highly unlikely that there was a "someone" who "created" the entire universe, and I need at least a plausible reason to even entertain that idea. If you want to sell me on your religion, you first have to get me past that point first. Literally millions have tried, all have failed.
Now, if you want to skip over that point and try to get me to believe there is a supernatural, omniscient, omnipresent, omnibenevolent being that cares for me and it is somehow important to him what I think, do, believe, care about, sleep with or give money to, this is not a shortcut for you, but makes your sales pitch even harder for me to buy.
Finally, the last gasp of this con-job is to try to convince me that I have to die to fully understand the fate this “someone” who “created” the universe has in store for me as punishment for my incredulity. This supernatural creator of the entire universe apparently has also created two options for my consciousness which will somehow survive my death. One option is eternal bliss if I but buy into this con-job, and the other is eternal torture if I don’t, but I have to die first to know whether this is all a lie, and I can never know if it is a lie as long as I am still above room temperature.
The fact that anyone ever fell for this really stupid con-job blows my mind and makes me wonder who ever started the rumor that humans are an intelligent species of animal, probably the same people who made up this god bullshit.

djangoliscious101 I agree, your consciousness would be spread so thin across an infinite number of experiences that nothing would have any meaning.
Infinite life only sounds great to people who are scared of death. Living for eternity would be a nightmare that *LITERALLY* never ends. It is possible for infinite life. We for example may exist across infinite versions of all possible realities each time we die we go wake up in another version of our existence but at least if we die and start over on another version of said reality (this is just "for sake of argument") at least we forget our lives when we die and start over.
That's what I hypothesise happens, I think of our life being the first and only life as an illusion brought about by our desire to keep living. We're still made of subatomic particles and are thus subject to quantum mechanics even on a macro scale so maybe on a micro scale too. It's possible we live once out of all possible lives we can exist in or maybe live across them all. It doesn't really matter because these are unanswerable questions that can literally drive you mad. I'm not even kidding I spend WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too much time trying to digest unsolvable existential crisis' like this all the time and it can be a strain on the mind that's very exhausting.
All I know is that the idea of eternal life is wishful thinking. I've provided a hypothetical way it can be done but even then it's not certain and even then it'd be a "each time is the first time" kind of deal that would be infinitely better than well, living infinitely without it ending. The kind of deal in the bible would be horrible. Eternity kissing the arse of a despotic cosmic horror that pretends to be an all knowing just uber being. I'd rather just die permanently when I die. Or go to hell then spend an eternity in a church service.

When I was about 8 or 9 and understood the concept of eternity somebody pointed to me that that is a very long time in heaven. I realized that about halfway through you would have done everything and you would get bored. And you had eternity in front of you. It did not like it. At twelve I discarded the concept of a god and at about 18 I had the epiphany that there is no supernatural at all. I thought that reason would do that to everybody. Until I met the American way of thinking.

I have a neighbor who's a nice guy but him and his family torment me by trying to save me, I've tried every way to be polite and tell him to leave me in peace. He drags me into debate about God yet he won't hear my words when I talk. It's got to the point I look out the window before I go out to see if he's around. I have a bad temper and I fear lose in it with him. Damn it's crazy a man can be tormented like this, I should be able to call the police shouldn't I? Now if someone trys handing me a religious paper I hiss PISS OFF. Crazy world crazy rules.
It's a form of control not just theist but some of these politicians, believe what I say or I'll make it miserable that you'll eventually say I'm correct whether you believe it or not just so you can go about your day. They get that dopamine high in someone affirming their knowledge.
There is no adherent apologist who will ever be honest or truthful.
The end reminds me of an old joke of a guy running into a church yelling "On the right, you only have con-men. And on the left, you only have their marks!"

The question about whether theists believe things in the same way as atheists is spot on. They often talk about "choosing" to believe. That's such a foreign concept to me that it took me years to realize they mean it...they actually *choose* what to believe!

I wasn't quite sure what to think of Aron. I have never watched any of his videos in detail until this one. Sometimes you see what I like to call the "angry atheist" who likes to dole out obviously intended insults. I am glad to see that he can clearly articulate and argue a very well thought out point. He is deserving of recognition in my eyes. He reminds me of Sam Harris in a sense that they both share the gift of eloquent description.
You know, I'm an atheist and what not but i could never get enough of any of these talks. Sometimes I feel like I'm a sit at home church goer just out for a laugh. But I truly want to understand why christians remain christians because ever since I was little (wether or not I knew anything aboutanything) I was able to catch on to the fact that believers don't believe becuase it makes sense, they only believe because it feels good. What I want to know is why, why why. Why do they do this? Doesn't everyone want to know the truth about anything? I mean seriously, doesn't everyone hate a batshit Liar.
I want to know that answer bad but I will probably be too busy with the rest of my life in the realm of physics becoming a full fledged geek. (Were I will probably be sacrificing my life in the same way monks and preists and nuns do, for the pursuit of greater knowledge)

This entire video is absolute gold. I've confronted many theists using these exact same points. It blows my mind that they won't even consider anything that contradicts their predisposed religious beliefs. That they would reject facts and reality and instead choose to live in a make believe fantasy world.

@thehowlingjoker I can easily justify why the Christian worldview is the only true worldview, if you'd like. The justification also demonstrates why any non-theistic worldview is definitely false, at the same time.
It starts with a disjunctive syllogism put into a logical conjunct.
Disjunctive syllogism:
Either P is true or Q is true.
P = Christian worldview (as a complete system of starting presuppositions)
Q = any non-Christian worldview (any other complete system of starting presuppositions)
The systemic-level argument is P vs Q, where I'm arguing only P entails X is possible.
(X = Knowledge, rational thought, intelligibility, science, etc)
My interlocutor must *necessarily* argue that Q entails X is possible instead.
(There is no position of neutrality or withholding judgment when it comes to worldviews, as they are non-contingent claims. So there is no position of neutrality or withholding judgment to appeal to in order to evade arguing for any worldview at all, as affirming a worldview is required just to engage in debate in the first place, write posts, or assert anything at all. Affirming a worldview is required just to have intelligibility, so neutrality is not an option that logically exists)
So, my interlocutor and I are both making conflicting positive claims.
Me: That only P entails X is possible.
Interlocutor: That Q entails X is possible instead.
The only way to resolve these conflicting positive claims is through a comparison of competing systems, where we are both allowed to do internal analysises of each other's worldviews in an attempt to justify our claims.
So, which non-Christian worldview are you putting forth for the comparison of competing systems? Whichever non-Christian worldview you choose, I can do an internal analysis to demonstrate why it entails X is NOT possible (and therefore is contradictory, meaning false).
Once I've done this for my interlocutor's worldview, I do the same for the other 7 possible starting points for non-Christian worldviews.
Once I've done all 8 starting points, that's equivalent with refuting all non-Christian worldviews (since the possible variation among the normative-level beliefs won't matter as they'll all be contingent upon 1 of the 8 possible starting points)
And since, at that point, I will have refuted all non-Christian worldviews that means I'm justified that Q is false in the disjunctive syllogism which justifies that P is true.
P = Christian worldview.
Done.
@thehowlingjoker You will never see Aron, or any other atheists activist / Apologist, even attempting to give justification for why any non-theistic worldview is true like I just did for why the Christian worldview is true.
Instead, they arbitrarily begin with the premise that their particular non-theistic worldview is "the default" so they therefore don't need justification. This is false, as there is no such thing as a "default" worldview unless it can be justified as such.
A "default position" or "null hypothesis" is something that exists only in scientific debates about normative-level claims. So it's a category error fallacy deriving from Scientism which causes them to approach all debates like they're scientific debates, even when they're specifically about topics beyond the limitations of what science can deal with.
They simply do not understand Philosophy. Aron, for example, has been engaging in the theism vs atheism debate for 25+ years and still isn't even aware he's debating in the domain of Philosophy (metaphysics, specifically). That's patently absurd.
If he doesn't even know which domain he's debating in, even after than long, it tells you a lot.

Owning guns is in our cultural and heritage.
Its about freedom and self-defense. Defending your loved ones and property from anyone who threatens those things.

Of course there are bad people who own guns. That's true in any group.
I might agree with you that it is in our culture and heritage but it is demonstrably true that owning a gun puts in in greater danger than not owning one. It is one thing to say, I own a gun because I enjoy them and the sport of shooting. Technically ownership of any property is protected by the Constitution, but it is quite another story to have an irrational belief that it is for self protection. Belief that it will some how protect you is the very definition of paranoia and is completely irrational.
RDLONG30 I wonder if you did the research. It is a simple fact that owning a gun puts you at a greater risk than not owning a gun.
Think about it, if a criminal intends to harm you, they have the upper hand. Having a gun means nothing in that case and it might make you take a risk that you'd be stupid to make and get killed in the process. Don't forget the accidental shootings as we'll.
Now if you want to talk about training requirements and psychological examinations, background checks, etc.. In order to own a gun. I would have no problem with that at all. If you have to meet or exceed police requirements, awesome I will back that 100%. My guess is you don't.

In the USA, lawful gun ownership is a fairly low standard considering that many who commit gun crimes in this country are those who a simple background check would have prevented them from ever getting such easy access to firearms.
Though generally speaking I do think that guns should be legal, that is more because I believe in personal liberty - not because I feel that people ever have any reasonable need to own guns in a democratic society where guns will be 100% useless in any kind of "revolution", and also are fairly ineffective in self-defense.

This is getting a bit nitpicky, but I just got to the school grounds example and he didn't hit gun owners _too_ hard (or, I'm sure not as hard as he wanted to).
I don't know Texas's school ground rules, but I think Texas is one of those weird places that bans most types of open carry so that even people with CCW can actually be charged with a crime if anyone actually sees their gun. Hopefully there is some leeway, but it really sets a trap for people who want to carry.
And, IIRC, they are also a state where your car is "your home", meaning that without a permit, you can carry in your car, but not on your person. Great for stopping car jackings, but now you have to worry about your gun getting stolen from your parked car.
Anyway, I guess the point is Texas isn't the gun "free for all" Aron thinks it is. I know I saw lots of business posted "No Carry Allowed", whereas where I live, we have CCW, and almost NO businesses ban carry on their property. The few that did, allowed it after enough people told them they would no longer do business with them if they stayed posted.
echomjp The primary reason why the chances of my using a gun in self defense are remote is because so many good people carry them in the first place. With nary a shot being fired. The deterrent effect upon potential evil doers is enormous. Never rely on mere "body counts" to determine the relevance of deterence. That's a mistake. Most armed conflicts are resolved without a shot being fired or a police report manifested.

Well, there really aren't background checks of any reasonable standard in the vast majority of the USA, so here they are legal gun owners regardless of mental capacity.
Texas is certainly a place where gun regulations are lax by most standards, and not being allowed to use open carry in certain places such as schools is a moot point.
Many people feel that if someone is holding a gun out that they might use it on them or on someone else, and that is why it is typically seen as better to have a concealed firearm rather than to brazenly walk around with it in the open.
Also, the fact that you can even get a permit to carry a gun outside of your car makes me think that the example you cited is a bit odd, unless getting said permit is exceptionally difficult.
Edit: I live in Alaska by the way, where gun laws are also quite lax - open carry being something you can do without a permit, though guns cannot be brought into schools or legal institution buildings (courts and jails and such). They also cannot be brought into bars that serve alcohol, and it is illegal to drink at restaurants while carrying. All in all, that's about it.
