It was a shameful example of greed an racism over peoples wellbeing and rights.
But on the other hand nobody died. Although there have been several suspicious disappearances and unsolved deaths.
But given americas history with brutal massacres in the thousands like Tulsa Oklahoma, the "indian wars", the mormon execution laws ect, it was rather mild in the severity of the violence.
Horrible, yes, but america has had very many very much worse exampes in its history.

Those of us who aren't U.S citizens have been saying all these things for many years.
I grew up hearing about "the old country." My grandfather came to the USA as a refugee from pogroms and genocide in Eastern Europe. He was raised in a tiny sect of ultra-orthodox Judaism, but after his (traditionally arranged) marriage to my grandmother they both chose to buck centuries of tradition, and transition to a more secular life. Both of them lived through the murder of every single member of their families in Europe during WWII, and through decades of blatant discrimination and bigotry here in the USA. Even so, as long as they were able to do so they faithfully devoted a portion of their (very limited) financial resources to organizations supporting civil rights for African-Americans and other minorities; they never wanted to take the relative privilege afforded to them as Americans for granted, nor to forget just how helpless they had felt when the world had largely ignored their own persecution. Both my grandparents were devout socialists, while somehow still also being equally devoted to almost unlimited freedom.
Yet still, the only request my grandfather made for his own funeral was that "God Bless America" be played during the service. Not because he believed that America was anything close to a perfect nation...but because he believed that this nation, unlike his native country, at least had the potential for something greater and more noble. And, as conflicted as I feel about it, I still find that I share his hope...it waxes and wanes, but somehow I can't ever manage to convince myself that the arc of history will NOT, eventually, bend inexorably towards justice. That was his American Dream, and dammit...I want it to be mine and my children's!
My parents remember, vividly, being forced to make the choice between participating in mandated Christian school prayer...or being the only students to stand isolated in the hallway while their fellow students prayed. In college, my father was housed in a segregated dorm, and my mother watched one night as a cross was burned in front of hers. And I remember repeatedly waking up as a child to find swastikas spray painted on the front of our house, and of answering the phone to hear angry strangers promise that "you Jews will get what's coming to you."
Today, my internal conflict has risen to levels that are, at times, nearly intolerable. I try never to forget to recognize my privilege, and to feel profoundly grateful for it. I try so hard to keep alive the same passionately fervent hope that my grandparents felt, even (or perhaps especially) in the absence of the privilege that I now enjoy. I want so, so very badly to believe that this nation, and its people, STILL have the potential for unprecedented greatness. I want to believe that my children will grow up in a nation which recognizes MORE of their rights and freedoms than it did in my lifetime. But recently, it feels like preserving that hope gets harder every day. I want so badly to keep the luxury of maintaining my moderate, centrist ideology. Like you and my grandfather, I do know about other places...and I want that knowledge not to threaten but to enrich my dreams. I want to hold onto those dreams, however irrationally optimistic they might be.

Thank you, for your words and your passion. Thank you for reminding me that belief in a deity isn't required to have or to express such passion and idealism.
Hope and optimism might indeed be irrational and illogical...but, like opinions, we're all entitled to it. However, I now understand that hope is the easy part. Action is what's needed. But sir, it's words like yours that give people like me hope; the kind of hope required for me, and those like me, to take the actions necessary to enact change.
Because, really- what else do we have left, if not hope (and even, I daresay, faith?) in our noble ideals, and the optimism needed to act?
The dream is over. The citizens of the US are mostly short-sighted and self-centered, ignorant and insulated, heavily indebted and religious cowards who care much more about getting sugary treats and toys than they do about morality, the environment, or anything else. This situation is not going to improve, and in fact it is going to get worse as the Trump judges continue to erode personal rights in favor of corporate profits, as corporations take money out of the economy, and as education is defunded and devalued. The facts do not support your view. When the US government taxed progressively from 1930s through the 1970s, the middle class exploded. The US was the leader in technology, education, and infrastructure. Today we are not even close.

I love the idea of a balance between capitalism and socialism, where we can work, run our businesses, and make our money, but still have a social infrastructure we can fall back on in hard times. After all, a hockey game needs refs and linesmen to enforce the rules. Otherwise, it's just the big strong guys beating the shit out of the weaker guys and bowling over the goalies to get the puck in the net.

We need more minds like yours. So many who become indoctrinated have the side affects of indoctrination which is ignorance, both willful or not, and a closed mind or even fear of opening he mind to other knowledge. Mainly because a book tells them not to read any other book. My main contempt for extreme religion is the indoctrination of young minds or even children. A child’s innocent imagination should never be forced into fearing it. That’s what the concept of a hell does. Makes a child carry a fear of their own imagination and as the indoctrination would hope, for the entire life of that being. It’s sad and unfair for this. Children should learn about religion when they do choose. And any one they want, not forced by their parents who selfishly put that same reciprocated fear into the next generations. We need to break his chain. It’s mentally unhealthy and no mystery why we see some preachers flat out demanding money for new jets and mansions while Jesus supposedly helped the poor, they blatantly do the opposite. Go figure. Remembers we fought that good war with a racially segregated military.My grandfather and my great uncles fought in World War II and some of them fight in Korea. And they told me the military put black military personnel through hell during those so-called good wars.
The greatest generation then came home and didn't do anything to rectify the injustices within America's own borders-- the Jim Crow, the redlining, etc... They left that to their children's generation to attempt to rectify.
By comparison, America certainly was the good guy in WWII... but we weren't complete and unqualified good guys by any stretch of the imagination. German women had a saying that went something like, "Better a Russian soldier on your belly then an American bomb on your head."
And who were those who came to this land and took it?? Christians!
Re: The Second Amendment.
If we look at section 13 of the Virginian Declaration of Rights then we spot something that seems mightily familiar:
"Section 13. That a well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state; that standing armies, in time of peace, should be avoided as dangerous to liberty; and that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power."
And let's check the text of the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America for the comparison:
"A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The Second Amendment is basically a concise rewording of Section 13. But this is useful, as Section 13 is more verbose regarding its reasoning and allows us to better understand where the logic of the Second Amendment actually derives.
The true worry - the real threat - that Section 13 (from which the Second Amendment derives) is concerned about is standing armies. That having standing armies in a time of peace is dangerous to liberty.
The problem being that, to fight off the British, America assembled an army and it won. Now, after 1776, the problem at hand was "now what?". What is to be done with that standing army?
The big worry was that America's newly won liberty could be lost to its own military force. There could be a coup e'tat - the military might try to take over. It might splinter into "warlordism" with military splinter groups taking over areas of the country, and the threat of civil war.
These were perfectly plausible worries to have at the time. There are innumerable examples around the world of countries that have exactly fallen to the threat of their own military. Coup d'etat, military juntas, countries splintering into warlordism or areas lost to the rule of criminal "rebels". This shit, unfortunately, happens all the time and America, a new nation, had every reason to fear that it could go down the same dark path.
That the mere existence of standing armies in a time of peace is, indeed, dangerous to liberty.
But, equally, you don't want to disarm everybody either. What if the British came back? If certain states disarmed, while others didn't, then they could very well be tempted to exercise some "might is right" over their neighbours.
The solution proposed by Section 13 and the Second Amendment is to have many small "well-regulated militias". Break the standing army down into small units. Each unit can defend its own patch. But none is of sufficient size to be any serious wider threat to liberty. If some foreign power did decided to invade, then these militias could all be reformed together to create an American standing army to see them off - then return once again to defence of their free state.
Basically, the same kind of idea that neutral Switzerland employs. Rather than a formal standing army, they have this militia system. Should a foreign power invade, then every citizen would be conscripted into the Swiss Army to repel the invader. But, ordinarily, in keeping with their political neutrality, they have no standing army. No aggressive force.
Section 13 / the Second Amendment basically originally envisioned such a system for America too. Many small militias defending their own patch. Potentially from one another - as all these militias would keep an eye on each other that none of them would grow out of control. No formal standing army. But if an army was required - as a foreign power threatens - then all these militias could be formed together into an American army.
That was the envisioned model. And, yes, it's somewhat a nonsense now, as America eventually just went whole hog on the standing army, and now ploughs ridiculous sums of money into its "industrial military complex" (and it could be argued that this has gotten out of control, proving the original wisdom of Section 13 / the Second Amendment).
But, certainly, Section 13 / the Second Amendment was absolutely not about "protecting myself from the government", as Second Amendment advocates often say, as you can see in Section 13 that it insists " that in all cases the military should be under strict subordination to, and governed by, the civil power". And the civil power is, of course, the government. Of the people, for the people.
It was NOT defence from the government. Quite the opposite. It was defence OF the government from military takeover. Defence of the Republic from coup d'etat, military thugs, standing armies, and others trying to take away American liberty by the barrel of a gun.

That's why border security is so expensive. You cannot build a wall that cannot be breached - it could be a fifty-meter high, ten-meter-thick wall of reenforced concrete and it'd still give way to a few drilled holes packed with explosive. A wall does not stop people crossing, it only slows them down long enough for border security to catch them - which means every part of that wall needs to be constantly monitored, around the clock, and guards must be stationed along it at intervals close enough that they can reach any point on the wall in less time than it takes to breach that point. That's a lot of guards, a lot of tech, and a lot of infrastructure to maintain - which all adds up to a whole lot of money, both in the initial construction costs and in the annual upkeep.

I'm English and in my junior school in the 80s we had to pray every morning in assembly and sing songs from books called songs of praise, this was mandatory and a mainstream school. It was the most tedious thing to do every day when we could have been learning interesting things.

EU viewpoint here, if anything Aron softened the blow and understated the situation. I've turned down job opportunities in the US because of how backwards basic stuff like health coverage is in your country. I got friends that instead took the opportunity and now want to come back as soon as it's reasonable career-wise, risking a medical bankruptcy in the meantime and gambling on their good health. From my PoV i'd also not hesitate to call the US a police state given that police just has no checks and balances.
Last but not least, I've been around in all central european states, I've never seen so many homeless people as in San Francisco. US isn't a rich nation, is a nation of poor people with some very rich exceptions that skew the average.

I once had a conversation with an American about politics. I presented figures like overall happiness, social mobility, health (mental and physical) and the degree of control on ones lofe as good indicators of a working system and that the Fennoscandinavian way was better at providing these things. He said no, it was invalid because the system is socialism (even though technically it isn't) and socialism of bad. Only capitalism sets individuals free. The argument boiled down to the idea that no matter how much good a system produces, being anything resembling socialism is in itself so bad that it can never be a good system.

An honest socialist realises you make a total commitment to such a society or it will not work. Socialism does not equal free shit. Dedication, work and sacrifice, especially sacrifice, and the results should be worth it. But you have to share the values and incorporate the vision into your culture and identity. Americans aren't existentially constituted this way and don't want to do this. Like it or lump it.........
