    During a very messed up period in my life, I decided to quit alcohol, nicotine, drugs and masturbation for 90 days, all at once, cold turkey.
    I still cannot explain how, but it was the most energetic and uplifting period I had ever lived. All I would do was to go to the gym and work. I somehow ended up waking up at 6am, no alarms, hit the gym for 2+ hours, eat healthy, and then work a very stressful and demanding managerial job for 10-12 hours per day. People were noticing something changed in my face, my voice, my posture, my determination by day number 4. I was a machine, determined and happy. I believe it was the dopamine fast along with a newfound hope that I can change my life that gave me all that energy. It was a natural high I haven't experienced ever since.

I'm not a morning person but during those first 40-50 days I remember waking up, walking in the rain, and thinking "what a beautiful day to be alive". Day after day. Plot twist: people in prison are the most mindful people on a planet

    • @bigdumbfatcat2869
      @bigdumbfatcat2869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +140

      Well, they do get food 3 times a day, depending on the prison they will have some access to TV, and they will play cards or something with other prisoners, as well as talk to them, so they aren't really doing the same thing. Still, the amount of such recreation is still very limited, they can't just bombard their brains with social media and porn all day, so their brains probably do readjust for the better. Probably why there are a lot of stories of people turning their life around after prison.

    Alright I did it. Right after watching it two days ago I decided to go for it and fasted yesterday. No food, no smokes, no music, no computer no nuthin. It was actually not that hard, except for the cravings of cigerettes. Felt kinda weak but that was to be expected. I wrote like suggested, but I didnt feel bad or in anyway depressed or anything really. I really tried to see what I was doing wrong but nothing came out in 4 pages of writing. Biggest benefit was time seemed to have slowed down a bit, and I was not being a slave to addictions and external stimuli like ads or other marketing bs.
    This morning however I woke up like a fiddler on the roof, I was singing, laughing my ass of while making pancakes, it was great. I even managed to go from waking up at 10 to 6:30 AM. Not sure if one day is enough but it certainly did something and I will keep doing it more.

      You mean on internet? Then for a few days you can try this: don't touch your phone or your computer for an hour or two hours if you can, starting right as you wake up. Try to instead do some sort of minimal chores or sketch in a notebook, just don't use any device, and if you can abstein from music too for that one or two hours that's great, definitely do it. Do this for say, three days, and then try to do a day when you go on a lot longer. Say until 18:00 you don't use the internet except only and exclusively for _listening_ to music. Then go back to doing it just for two hours in the morning for say, another three days. Then try to go for a full day. From waking up to falling asleep again. There you have it, a full day of internet fasting. Then you can go back to the mornings of fasting, if you found you like how you feel doing them.

      @@kikidean1083 ADHD is a real disorder that gives people visibly different brain scans compared to people without it. Just because some children are probably misdiagnosed with it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. In fact, it’s much more than “not wanting to pay attention in school”. It leads to hyperfixations (such an intense interest on one thing for days/weeks/months at a time where you don’t even sleep or eat and the interest suddenly dies for no apparent reason), executive dysfunction, and a heavy reliance on dopamine because your brain cannot produce enough dopamine and serotonin on its own (which are physical neurotransmitters, wonder if you think those are fake too). People with ADHD also have physically adverse reactions to certain medications and caffeine.

If you sit and observe you would realize what your paradigms are, and understand how you perceive the world. Go on a complete information shut off, so no news, no internet, no books, no social media(make this permanent, social media is only useful if you are a business) no tv, and be aware of what you're thinking, physical sensations, and your mood at ALL times, constantly be aware of only those things. This is to help you understand who you are, which is not the mind, but the one that observes.

    I feel like this can, in a sense, wake someone up to metaphorically smell what's burning or rotting in their life. Simply an increase in awareness to these factors may provoke a person to deliberately make changes to their routine. Which may lead to significant internal and/or external effects.
    I'm a critic of not eating and not talking to anyone. In order to maintain health, at least a small, healthy snack for breakfast and a light dinner shouldn't impact the outcome of this challenge. I also feel that stimulation isn't to be entirely avoided. So talking to someone in person, or on a landline/payphone should be fine.

      Overall this was boring, yet satisfying. lol I feel very refreshed and focused. I'll be honest, I picked a bad day to do this because my family were all home yesterday, so it may not have been as effective had I been alone, but I don't think I needed a total 'reboot' anyway. I just spent most of the day in silence. It was nice. I actually didn't write anything down, because apart from when I'm writing my head is pretty clear like most of the time anyway. I think all I need is a break from it every now and then. I didn't have any big revelation to get my life back on track or whatever. I realized that I actually do stuff like this sometimes, fasting from food and tech already, but on a smaller scale than this. 9/10 would recommend! 😃

      @hgzmatt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I hope you are doing the kind of fasting that is actually a lifestyle change. Because the short term ones will just have you bounce back. You need to make changes to your diet in general and then you won't need fasting or dieting.
      If you get rid of distractions in your life so you won't feel tempted it will make you more productive naturally. I obviously haven't solved this yet but I'm working on it.

    Thought it was a bit ironic to have sponsored product placement encouraging viewers to engage in consumerist behaviours (online shopping can easily contribute to dopamine hits) on a video about curbing dopamine lol. It's totally out of place in this video.

    Ever since school started, I've been doing nothing but dopamine fasts 95% of every day. It's driving me insane and it's making my depression worse, so yay.

    I’ve done this before for retreats. The only difference is that you feel the lack familiar drugs like sugar and Caffeine and days just sort of drag on. I guess you start to appreciate the convenience of things like phones and videos, but it’s nothing especially groundbreaking.
    I suppose that it makes you feel refreshed when you come back to normal habits, which is nice. So, do it if you’ve got an opportunity to do it

      The goal is not to go back to normal habits but start habits you want like studying or exercise etc. it may not be groundbreaking for you but I hope it will be for othersz

    Please teach this to your kids, friends, family, in school! This should be basic knowledge!!

      It used to be basic knowledge when fasting and penance were part of daily life.

    Lad, what a powerful technique you've got there. I'm all about procrastinate and depression. Have got into a literature course and a lot of reading lately this year, cutting off some of the items you said to cut. The effect was absolutely powerful, felt focused and vivid. I totally agree with you. Your method, lad, does work and I'll assume its full form from now on for my routine. Thank you !
