I have a really hard time reading people’s emotions and underlying thoughts, and this has been incredibly helpful. I have severe social anxiety and almost every time an action was brought up that showed nervousness or anything like that, I found that nearly all of them I do to an extent. Something else interesting was that standing with the arms behind the back, which is another thing I do which I didn’t even realize made me seem even less approachable, I always just did that because whenever I’m nervous I like to keep my hands occupied to help distract from how nervous I really am, and doing that keeps them occupied while not being distracting to someone else.

Guys, MANY of the repetitive motions listed here are often just "pacifying" or done out of boredom/habit. they could also be a form of stimming. Many less-than-self-aware people such as myself tend to do this especially if they have autism/ADHD. their actions could mean nothing, especially if your interaction is going well.

    So, to summarize...
Being closer or turning towards someone is a sign of comfort or confidence, and vice versa.
Making yourself smaller is a sign of discomfort or insecurity, and vice versa.
"Gravity-defying movements" are a sign of positive emotion, and vice versa.
Fiddling with things is a pacifying movement either to cure boredom or anxiety. Sitting still is a sign of investment.

It's more of "Hey, people tend to do this so pay attention sometimes"

Summary: if the person moves towards something, they ‘desire’ it, it can be the desire to leave, or the desire for you. If the person has broad body position (like far apart shoulders or far apart legs), they feel confident, and so is for the opposite (closer apart legs mean less confidence). If the person starts massaging themselves, they feel uncomfortable. If the person has abnormal breathing, they feel more nervous (if they didn’t do a lot of exercise, if so then that’s normal).

Am I the only one watching this to understand how to show people I'm feeling negative emotions?
For some reason, I always struggled with this, I never felt comfortable expressing negative emotions infront of my parents and I never realised that it was problematic and damaging till I got into a relationship and actually started wanting to be heard by someone, even on my bad days.
I started to realise that I'm struggling heavily with showing negative emotions and with calming myself down efficiently.
Even when I do let my emotions out, it feels like I'm acting instead of being real. It's like I have no clue nor confidence in my own feelings and I usually end up either exaggerating the feeling - pushing by that people away and confusing them, or the complete opposite - downgrading the feeling which leads to me feeling unheard and misunderstood almost right after..
And yeah, I do plan on doing some therapy sessions in the future regarding that and some other things that are bothering me, but I'll be able to do so, sadly- only in about 3 to 4 years... :)
So.. i guess, I gotta survive somehow till then.
So if, by any chance, there's a therapist in here with some advice on how to deal with this problem and, if there are, any other reasons I struggle with that except the reasoning I gave, I would gladly appreciate it❤😢

I read allat, and i just want to say that im sorry for my past rudeness. Also, i think that its fine to feel weird when doing physical or body movements. If you havent done it before, or just starting to go back into movements to show that you are uncomfortable, its fine to feel weird. Its just like riding a skateboard. Its really hard once you start skating, but overtime you will get a lot better i swear. If you still need the therapist after a while, dont worry about it. Nobody will judge you. I guess my advice is, do what you want, as long as your comfortable doing it.

Does body language differ between cultures? and if it does, how big the difference? i live in southeast asia, i dont know how big the differences are there between eastern and western culture in term of body language. Even between neighboring countries have culture differences. Not just country, even family can have culture differences. The big question is, which information that valid and can relate to my social dynamic?
