I don't see how people hate on Kendrick. He's been grinding for 11 years (14 if you count when he wasn't signed), always pays homage to the Legends, & just says he wants to be the best. Do y'all wake up wanting to be 2nd best?
Fresh off the Drake and Kendrick beef I just wanna say even though I was team Drake and things got heated I have respect for who Kendrick is as a person. Dude is solid.
Whenever Kendrick is asked a question notice how he looks at every single person in the room while he is voicing his opinion. He is including everyone and that is so respectful. Great man, great music, great path he's taken.

I think TPAB is ONE of the greatest albums I've ever heard. I can't get into the specifics of why because it would be a long essay. lol but it really touched my soul. Even my little 13 yr old brother loved it & understood the message.
I’m here after the battle. Kendrick is that guy! When he said he initially makes music for people in prison- that was pivotal for me. That he thinks there, and is so intentional about making people think and come back to LOVE, you can’t help but grow. Hopefully, that positive energy will recycle from one to another. Awesome mission in his art.
Kendrick Lamar is too real, he's so ahead of his young age , he's only 27 but has the mind and soul of a 1000 year old guru, Best Artist of His Time Hands Down
I think both albums shouldnt be compared. Youll see after he drops a few more albums how everything will come together. All his albums will make a bigger masterpiece.
I say it's his best meaning wise, and cinematically, But GKMC is his best sound wise, and how close it is to him. He took you on a Journey through his life, from the time he was a little child runnin wild, to when he got signed
There's a distinct difference in how Kendrick talks now - he sounds much older than his years. He's still only 27, but some of what he says sounds like a 10+ years artist,or even, an older guy who's been through some things. Comparing this to previous interviews, even the Nardwuar interview, you can see the maturity. This is what will stand the test of time ultimately. The biggest artists in hip hop were always lyrical back in the 90s. I swear Rosenberg gets on my nerves with his dumb comments.
@Jojo Aquilla you're right and wrong if that makes any sense. Hip hop in the early days was about having fun but to say it wasn't lyrical is just not true. Love that they've mentioned J. Cole in this interview. When you think of the best of this generation, most of the time they like to say Drake and Kendrick all the time without realizing that Cole is on that level as well. Overall, nobody from this generation is doing what those three are doing and this is very special. We should all appreciate it and live in the moment, cause this will be rare years from now. As for Rosenberg, I think Jay-Z & DMX was the last time we've seen two rappers who were "that lyrical and that dedicated to Hip-Hop." You can even argue Lupe Fiasco when he had the popularity and Lil Wayne from that '05-'08 era when he was in such a zone as well.

After watching this interview i gain way more respect for Kendrick especially talking about depression. It was like i'm one of those people he is talking about most definitely going to buy the album salute my brother one love.
He's a beast on the mic and plus he raps about things that matter to everyday life too, i never heard this dude raps about having lot of cars, girls, jewels or lot of mansions, he raps about things that most of us can related too, big up to K Dot man
Kendrick, J Cole and Drake are at the forefront of the Culture for the new generation, and these guys are hungry. We may be coming amongst another "Golden Era" of hip-hop..
Micah Loggins And once again, there is no such thing as an instant classic. In order for an album to be classic, universal acclaim from critics and fans isn't the only thing required. What matters even more is its influence after many years. It needs to drop at the perfect time, and it needs to be influental to many artists. So no, it's not a classic. Look at Illmatic for example, people still buy it, and people still list it as an album that influenced them a lot.
P14Media that's all well and good, but the OPs sentiment is 100% correct. Azelia Tanks cited Kendrick's billboard interview and said it was the stupidest thing a black man has ever said. That, coupled with all the other ignorant shit that bottom feeder says... Kendrick might forgive you bitch, but I don't
jlebomb azealia actually makes good points even on kendrick because he didn't answer the question he was asked in the interview, he swerved and started talking about black issues. People just don't listen to azealia because they don't like how she makes her points so they disregard what she has to say.
MYSTERIOUSasLOVE Yeah I generally agree with Azealia, except when she starts TOO much shit. She's like a more brash version of old Kanye (I think you may have responded to the wrong person)
Great interview! Added respect for this guy each time I see him speak or perform. I don't believe in instant classics either, but TPAB is beyond a first listen judgement - It's an album that you unfold further with each listen. That's why it's easier to hate on, too complex for some to understand. Reminds me of Section 80, I love the vibe! Australia is ready to see you for the third time, King K.Dot!!
"You fear what you don't understand or what you don't want to understand. Period." Yo Kendrick is dropping gems in this interview. One of my favorite artists and people. I hope this journey of his continues to go positive and just have an upward trajectory.
Someone should make vines of the times where he talked about people getting twisting his words. It's funny how Chief Keef said he was going to raise the murder rate with his album & Young Thug said "I'm too iced out to care about black people dying" & nobody criticized them heavily.
He says how important shows are, but it’s almost been a year since TPaB dropped and he hasnt been on a world tour... I am really mad at him for that. He needs to come to Europe man. Please Kendrick...
14:57 is the moment you see all faces locked in on Kendrick Lamar!!!! Look at Ebro and Peter. They looking like they're astonished by Kendrick Lamar, his music and his message!! Kendrick is HIP HOP!!! It's not ONE dude who's doing HIP HOP, big, that's fucking with Kendrick, NOT ONE!!! Dude is AMAZING.
Why the fuck nobody asked about the untitled's Colbert report song? That song was dope as fuck, would be perfect see that in the To Pimp a Butterfly Deluxe Album
Did Rosenberg just say he doesn't think there's been a time where the two biggest artists were as lyrical as Kendrick and Cole I'm sick of this nigga on everything
HipHopObsession kendrick doesnt even lyrically impress me really.. Its just his genuine energy .. His emotions... His ability to hit you with so many different styles. I see his potential to be bigger than he his if he wanted to compromise to just have hit records... Cole.. He makes dope songs.. Good lyrics.. But his energy lacks in his records.. You can only listen to Cole for a little while in small spurts... But together... Kendrick/Cole style matches perfectly... From Jig is up ... Or Temptation... Or Shock the World... Or They Ready ft Krit.. Great ass songs
dirt rain Thats because you are slow, and like your rhymes spoon feeds, or dramatic punch lines. When you get wiser or older. Or maybe even look up his lyrics on rap genius. You will see he has the deepest lyricist in rap.
I've been waiting for the joint album since temptation, and when I heard forbidden fruit by J cole ft kendrick I thought it was a sign that it'll be next! Mann I can't wait, please release that fire.
You know what've been cool if he decided to go the GKMC 2 route with this album? In "Wesley's Theory" when Dre called and it made me think what if he did the same concept of GKMC in a way but with his famous peers trying to contact him and we hear the voicemails like in GKMC. Like in "U" he's struggling with depression so what if the whole concept was he was going through depression and his famous peers were calling and whatever they said lead us into the next track. I love what he did with TPAB but this was just an idea I had when I really dissected this album.
+Lunar Orbit Yeah there's no winning, especially if he did a GKMC2 theme. Because they'd think he fell off because he couldn't come up with something new.
This man will be a legend if he keeps this vibe up. His discography already is impressive and he's been interesting enough to keep pace. I respect Kendrick Lamar like crazy

'i' is indeed one of the greatest Hip-Hop songs ever
Awesome interview. The topics were diverse, and his answers were solid. He makes me thoroughly proud as a Comptonite.
He's a beast on the mic and plus he raps about things that matter to everyday life too, i never heard this dude raps about having lot of cars, girls, jewels or lot of mansions, he raps about things that most of us can related too, big up to K Dot man
this beautiful human... Thank GodDess for Kendrick
Kendrick, J Cole and Drake are at the forefront of the Culture for the new generation, and these guys are hungry. We may be coming amongst another "Golden Era" of hip-hop..
lil wayne and rick ross
Nah
Nikki Minaj
GMC idiot
Jacques Robles Drake
shits already a classic bruh
No shit Sherlock Just because you can't recognize it as one, doesn't mean it isn't one. Take your opinionated ass somewhere with that nonsense.
Erik Well that escalated quickly...
Micah Loggins It's possible.
No shit Sherlock Well if it ain't a instant classic, it's most def the dopest album out right now. We'll see if Ye or somebody else can top it.
Kendrick was about to catch a body in that room...lol
talking about some I forgive you....
Azealia Banks you can sit down now...
LBCertified how do you know that?
jlebomb Top dawg sent out a tweet showing a text with kendrick mentioning he was going to have azalea banks singing on complexions
This is by far the realest interview I have seen on Hot 97. Good job guys :)
Thanque K-Dizzle for TPAB. I just went back and bumped GKMC but the new joint bumps even bettah in me cah. Blessed and talented u r.
Australia is ready to see you for the third time, King K.Dot!!
to pimp a butterfly is easily my favorite project in the last 15 years
Damn
@@CASSOBLVCK lol what a coincidence
I am so impressed with Kendrick. I hadn't planned on getting his album but after this interview.... I'm definitely getting it. Great Job K. Dot.
Can they just interview him without all the background noise and instrumentals...
It's funny how Chief Keef said he was going to raise the murder rate with his album & Young Thug said "I'm too iced out to care about black people dying" & nobody criticized them heavily.
the way they’re talking about streaming in this interview is crazy when you take into consideration how that’s the standard for receiving music now.
fuck I adore him
Ayt Bitch
ooo ya wet huh 😉
What...^
And I adore you ma
"Ali you thirsty on Twitter"
I confess I'm a "To Pimp A Butterfly" chronic
Is it just me, but Wesleys Theory is one of the best joints on the album?
u
that and Momma
Yea
Momma complexion how much a dollar cost
was he getting choked up while talking about his comment during the billboard interview? so much soul and wise beyond his years. I adore you K
He says how important shows are, but it’s almost been a year since TPaB dropped and he hasnt been on a world tour... I am really mad at him for that. He needs to come to Europe man. Please Kendrick...
He'll be in several EU countries this summer (Portugal, Spain, ...)
not here where i live though.. (netherlands)
Butterfly is the best Hip Hop album in years...King Kendrick deserves that crown
It's ur kind of music. I'm almost 30 I can't listen to drake kind of shit anymore.
What about joey bada$$s album b 4da$$
+Robert Sharp that shit was a snooze fest
14:57 is the moment you see all faces locked in on Kendrick Lamar!!!! Look at Ebro and Peter. They looking like they're astonished by Kendrick Lamar, his music and his message!! Kendrick is HIP HOP!!! It's not ONE dude who's doing HIP HOP, big, that's fucking with Kendrick, NOT ONE!!! Dude is AMAZING.
this was the best interview ive seen from these guys. much respect
He is very intelligent and takes time to answer questions. He is a deep thinker
I listened to this album for the first time in 2020, it’s a classic
Yep it stood the test of time so far
Why the fuck nobody asked about the untitled's Colbert report song? That song was dope as fuck, would be perfect see that in the To Pimp a Butterfly Deluxe Album
Did Rosenberg just say he doesn't think there's been a time where the two biggest artists were as lyrical as Kendrick and Cole I'm sick of this nigga on everything
Bruh 😭😭😭
Smh
HipHopObsession kendrick doesnt even lyrically impress me really.. Its just his genuine energy .. His emotions... His ability to hit you with so many different styles. I see his potential to be bigger than he his if he wanted to compromise to just have hit records... Cole.. He makes dope songs.. Good lyrics.. But his energy lacks in his records.. You can only listen to Cole for a little while in small spurts... But together... Kendrick/Cole style matches perfectly... From Jig is up ... Or Temptation... Or Shock the World... Or They Ready ft Krit.. Great ass songs
dirt rain people said the same about Pac with the energy, emotion, and hittin on different styles...
dirt rain Thats because you are slow, and like your rhymes spoon feeds, or dramatic punch lines. When you get wiser or older. Or maybe even look up his lyrics on rap genius. You will see he has the deepest lyricist in rap.
Kendrick Lamar is the goat

After Drake
+Lunar Orbit
Yeah there's no winning, especially if he did a GKMC2 theme. Because they'd think he fell off because he couldn't come up with something new.
I remember when I was in 11th grade listening to Section 80 and no one at my school was listening to Kendrick. It's great to see him where he is now.
king kendrick.....
This man will be a legend if he keeps this vibe up. His discography already is impressive and he's been interesting enough to keep pace. I respect Kendrick Lamar like crazy
Kendrick is King of NY. Facts.
i love kendrick's style...!! peace peace
background instrumentals are way too loud. great questions tho, solid interview.
Such a humble man, I love kendrick so much, definitely my inspiration and role model as a musician
Kendrick Lamar is the greatest rapper of all time
Here in New England we are for Kendrick Lamar
What the hell is up with the people just staring at their phones? They do know Kendrick is speaking like right there.
The voice of this generation. I love him.
To Pimp a Butterfly is freaking amazing. Definitley a classic.
First TIME EVER commenting on YT but I dig this brother cuz I like THE WHOLE ALBUM! We have become a single-driven culture! A lot of aural ADHD goin' on and cats (myself included!) really seem to dig the whole album.
