Kendrick says Macklemore went too far + who "i" is for & the state of HipHop
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 พ.ย. 2014
- The Compton rapper opened up about the state of hip hop music on deeper level and explained where it needs to go. He also gave a surprising opinion on the Macklemore and those Grammy text messages but the thing that stood out most was when Kendrick discussed his new Outkast-esque record "i".

“You better make me look amazing with this new record”
Kendrick:
*Drops the best album of the decade*
chill
@@JumbleBeeRescue It undoubtedly is, though. No denying that.
KidIraqi good kid, m.A.A.d city is better
@@classact526 I love good kid, but TPAB is #1 for me
best rap album of all time imo 😶
I think it's hilarious that after hearing "i" people were scared Kendrick was gonna turn pop, and then he dropped TPAB.
He dropped blacker the berry before the album... that’s when he caught the body
what about loyalty kendrick and humble and god kendrick
@@adriangunderson-smith1698 People can create both types of music because everything isn't black and white?
I didnt say they couldnt, this is an argument about whether or not he went pop tho
@@adriangunderson-smith1698 Still applies?? If someone 'goes pop' is that not implying that the majority of their music is going to be pop records? I mean of course that still means they can make 'non-pop' records but it technically still applies since Kendrick Lamar does not have to 'go pop' to make records like humble or loyalty. I just think Kendrick Lamar is rapper period, mainly because he has touched and rapped on so many different types of sounds. It honestly doesn't matter to me though.
note how when kendrick is answering questions even if the question came from the guy on the right he will keep turning his head to make sure both people are included. Kendrick just has so much respect
i know right, he is amazing
Jay Rock also does that. They actually have really similar personalities its cray cray you can see they go way back
+Disphik LOL I was thinking the same thing.
+Josh Shuter this nigga is so damn humble... so chill

+il tizio I would say TPAB is the most important album in mainstream HipHop. In terms of replay ability, the albums you mention have more except for Testuo & Youth, I wasn't really feeling that. GKMC, i feel like is a much more accessible album but in terms of importance, lyrics, story telling, reality, TPAB is up there with "illmatic," The Infamous" Its very incredible album with a unique production that I've never heard of.

I agree with Terrence Cureton 100%. I like Macklemore. He is bringing something new to the table but even he agreed that Kendrick had the best new album this year.
esosj Mac can't even rap. The Heist album should've be named "Ryan Lewis & Musicians" cuz it carried only by pop organic production.
Under Pressure? B4.DA.$$? Cadillactica?
"To Pimp a Butterfly" is a work of art! He has changed the game!
I've played it like 20 times already it's sooo good
his range is incredible, Section 80, GKMC, and TPAB all stand out on their own for different reasons.

There are many reasons but the main reason I love and respect Kendrick as an artist is the fact that he really doesn't care about labels or what others think he is/should be. He's just making the records he wants; no matter how it turns out critically/popularly.
+RPD1175 I don't think he minds 11 nominations either.
That's all artists should be..In the 90s hip hop was about being different and having your own identity.how many new artist today would any of you even watch a documentary or movie on..the list is short to very non existent

What Kendrick says from 27:00 onward is too true. That's the problem with a lot of rap music today. Sure you may find it entertaining, but it's creating a culture, a way of thinking, in black communities that no one will ever hear of or see. I've already seen the influence of it on my peers from high school. How they'd see selling dope and having hoes was what made you cool, and how being in gangs was what you were supposed to do. Dropping out of school, theivery, they thought it all made them better as people. They'd try to imitate the rappers way of life as best they could, but they missed the part where the rapper is getting paid to do all of it while they're paying with their money and their lives possibly. Hearing Kendrick speak about this himself has made me gain even more respect for him than I've already had.
True
True. It's one thing to tell a story -- it's another thing to glamourize being broke, uneducated, and desperate. Rappers lie way too much nowadays. It makes me cringe when ever I hear the radio play such poop.
That's what people don't understand. of course you gonna think like that if you are not in the hood. The hood influence is what got the kids thinking and act like that. What your talking about is dealing with wannabes
MegaMkoi Now don't get me wrong, there are some individuals who were raised in the hood and who've seen what the hood does and expresses that as an obstacle that they've overcome, but if that is all they can talk about -- they shouldn't expect to be relevant and respected for too long.
Getting lift from your hood alone without skill is disrespectful to the art. And that "gangsta by association" shit is what them rap clowns do. Far too many rap clowns out, know what I mean?
Rappers talk about the things they see and experience on the streets only fools who are not from the real streets think is cool to imitate the rappers.
Kendrick comes out with a song with a super positive message and that makes him a sellout? This generation is fucked. And it's not like he hasn't made songs like this in the past. Fuck your ethnicity, heaven and hell, now or never etc...all those songs from his earlier projects had an upbeat positive vibe to it. I don't understand the hate the "I" track has been getting. I really don't.
I think it's because a large group of his so called fans nowadays are just mainstream listeners who bandwagon to what's hot at the moment. They probably never even heard of the tracks you mentioned.
This man is legit explaining his personality. Also how people are critiquing him for appearing mainstream from this song lol. It is crazy how relative this interview is I think you guys should repost these points.
I stopped fuckin wit the Grammys since Puffy won over Wu-Tang..."Puffy is good, but Wu-Tang is for the children." R.I.P. ODB🙌

This is the reason why Kendrick Lamar is going to be around for a very long time. He understands the mission. Regardless of what people say, this dude has had an impact in hip hop for a while now and its because of the music. Of course internet trolls are gonna say dumb shit but that's what they do. Kendrick Lamar is not everyone's cup of tea which is fine but you cant deny the influence.

Kendrick Lamar is 27yrs old and he has some wisdom. He's wise beyond his years. I can tell he's been through some real tough situations. I appreciate that through his music he opens up and speaks from the heart. Real talk with his Good Kid, M.A.A.D. city album it reminded me of Snoop and Dre's The Chronic album. When that album came out I was like what the hell am I listening to? I've never heard anything like that and it had me so hyped. That's how Kendrick's album made me feel. I really dig Kendrick. He's doing something different and that's what's up.

3. J. Cole
4. Joey Bada$$
5. Childish Gambino
*Enjoyment wise. Who's your top 5?
If this list is a list based of lyricism then it's terrible. Childish Gambino does not have good lyrics. His lyrics could've been written by a kid in elementary school. If you're referencing Rugrats and Ariel Pink in your music you're not on top of the game. His punch lines are pathetic and he constantly is bragging about how black he isn't and how he is trying to gain respect for it. Not to mention Donald says he wants to put away with hip hop stereotypes while he talks about how he gets women constantly in all of his music. "Asian girls everywhere, UCLA, You See Me bae"...are you serious???
Ok first off, Donald never said he wasn't black quiet the opposite heard "Hold you down" or "Black faces" off of Royalty. Also him liking Asian girls isn't a problem heard of Jhene Aiko? He also likes white, latino, even BLACK girls yes!!!! He doesn't really speak of it on record but yeah. Anyway Gambino is very good lyrically they're is hidden meaning in a lot of his lines as for muscial taste LaRel's musical preference I actually agree with with the exception of Kendrick at #1 and J.Cole at #3 swap Cole for 1 and Kendrick #2 and that's basically my list. So yeah everyone has different musical proclavities but we shouldn't judge, we're all humans on God's green earth. Peace. Stay Blessed y'all.
And also on a side note:LaRel your channel is Awesome brother keep up the good work!!!!!
Jeremy Diesel that's what I said...I said he is obsessed with talking about being black and how black he isn't to other black people. Not sure how long you took to do your research but this isn't a rebuttal. This is you agreeing with me.
I agree that he talks about about how unblack he is, but he's saying that he doesn't act like the stereotypical black guy, he is in fact black but he has tendencies that are considered white. But has black skin.
"i'm just in the studio, i don't got time to look cute" boom. says it all - kdot cares more about creating dope music then creating a "look". this is Hip Hop not Hip Pop

"people think you goin pop cause of 'i'" ....little did they know that kendrick dropped one of the most critically acclaimed rap album of all time with no mainstream or trendy beats on there.
kendrick has a depth and grace to his voice unlike any I've ever heard and it oozes pure wisdom. he's so grounded and relaxed and his presence just has such an incredible vibe.
kendrick and cole are the only ones really inspiring the people.
krit too, too many people sleep on him.
All lies people find inspiration in all types of music. Music is inspiration in it self. Cole, kendrick & even macklemore or in a position where they don't really have to compromise their music to sell records. But it's a lot of rappers that rap about the same things they do & nobody cares. A lot of rappers do trap, gangsta & party music but still do music with substance. Half of the interview, Ebro tries to act like Uncle Ruckus, Charlemagne. Smh. Kendrick is going to have a career like Nas and Drake is going to have a career like Jay Z. I understand what Kendrick is saying, but how can black people keep supporting rapper who always raps about materialistic things or high ticket prices they can't afford? Rappers who want be on the Grammys, but don't come to the BET Awards, How many of the rappers perform at HBCUs, but you see them donating money to USC Berkley like they don't have enough money already. All l'am saying is this new generation of artists make it hard to be loyal to them cus they never support or give back to the hood once they make it.
Kendrick will have a career like Pac! When you see how much his next album sales, then you will know. He will sale more then Naz over all, because it will be more of a global connection. So Pac when it's said and done bro. You are looking at the next true legend!
James Bond jr how old are you lol
James Bond jr lmao this kid think it's about the sales smh.
The BET awards has become a joke and a coin fest, I don't blame certain black artist's for not attending.
Very unlikely. Jay-Z had classic albums by the time his 4th LP was released. Drake has none. Nas would never have made a record like "I" as well during that period in his career. They're both going to form their own paths.
I'm a fan for life. Kendrick is a real artist. He is in the game to say something. To change lives. He wants his music to RESONATE. He will never do trash music, top 40 shit just to cash in. He is as sincere and honest as it gets and he will be around for many years

Its real artist everywhere and you talkin about studio gangster drake, eminem wannabe logic, and soft ass childish gambino who don't even like being a nigga?? I hate that shit. Real hiphop is what is relevant in the hardknock life with style and charisma. Thats what made the stereos bangin Biggie joints in the streets. Now its SINGING about pushing rock over WEAK beats, and hooks that make up half the fuckin song. These artists above make it a point to kick a ill verse everytime they spit. Lyrics flow messages on point. And while they might be on there mainstream grind for a single or two they only do it to appeal to white people who buy their album on iTunes and concert tickets. they will always always have music the street ride to even if its not poppin on the mainstream radios. Mainstream really do got the game fucked up. Just cus you think you cool listenin to that new drake joint dont mean its good you just don't have that hardknock taste so foh. If it aint hood i don't listen to it. I'll listen to keef drill squad music before I play club joints like 0-100. not tryna be a studio gangsta out here nigga
logic had the most "hood"/hard life out of all these people and he not even white, he is mixed, or according to every other black person he is "BLACK" just like our president. He grew up in and surrounded by every hood stereotype you can think of but because some bullshit you made up in your head he aint good enough huh...gtfoh judge the music bruh
respectively i meant the most hood life out of the guys you listed, that was "...for white boys to feel like they trappin in the suburbs."
don't be ignorant witht that "white boy shit" if you didn't notice hip-hop is white now...I don't like that it is, but open your eyes bruh!! White people are by FAR the biggest supporters of hip-hop. Black people don't go out of their way to go to concerts and buy albums like white people do. I'm mixed so Idc if I come off ignorant, Im stating facts. ALSO you don't have to be hard or come from the streets to be a good lyricist....with that being said I really like your list, but I would put 1. J Cole 2. Kendrick 3. Big K.R.I.T 4. Logic 5. Drake
How is drake not top 5... name 1 song for white boys.... what? He never gun bars... all real shit... gotta respect it
PLEASEE TELL THEM AGAIN!!!
"There's nothing new under the sun." That is so refreshing to hear a musician admit that. Everyone is so quick to act like it's a crime to not be completely original. But it's damned near impossible. It's all been done. You're just putting your own spin on something that came before you. I love it. The more I hear and see from this dude, the more I wanna hear and see.

Artists have a platform. We should make them accountable for the energy they release. Kendrick is socially aware of the lack of connection in modern day mainstream music. It's not all entertainment, and shouldn't be reduces to such. Propaganda is a system of influential symbols, that of which we should make sure we balance out. There is no balance. There should be balance. There must be balance.
Well said.

if you're truly a fan of the artist you would go out and buy the album in stores or on itunes. illegally downloading it doesn't help them at all
oGsmuttz I don't know them niggas personally. The fuck?!?! If being a true fan means buying their shit, I guess I'm not a true fan of anyone then.
Marc G cause you're a heartless piece of shit
FerociousLionsOrg That could be true. But I think I'm more so a broke piece of shit who prefers to spend money wisely.
but if you truly support the artist you would buy it. i buy all of kanye's albums because thats an artist i support fully. i'll be buying this new kendrick record too
why does it always feel irrelevant when non-black people say Eminem is the best rapper of all time? it's like you want to shuffle their hair and say awww like they're child
I feel like white people would often say there fav rapper is eminem and drake
Cause they are part of the illuminati lol
Lmao I thought I was the only one.
Lol ikr? When I see white people say Eminem is the best i'm like "because you don't listen to rap often..."
So fucking true, usually people who know nothing about hip hop say Eminem is the best
I thought he'd call Alli to turn up the headphobes
Jaqueal Buchanan LMAO
he was mixin wit Dre....;
mrsrjones60 you shleep
Lmao
Shit😂😂
"i'm just in the studio, i ain't got time to look cute" xD 22:14
I love how he actually goes back and forth with eye contact in conversation. You can tell he is actually passionate about what he has to say
kendrick is the best rapper of all time
L he is top 10 but he's not the best rapper of all time you both wildin
Sunbro Sharm the fact you're even remotely comparing K Dot to MJ proves your knowledge on music is severely lacking..
all of y'all are childish. it's an opinion. they can say whatever the fuck they want. even if it sounds like bullshit to the rest of us, it's their opinion
lol, are you 10? @mike
***** no you're 10
People saying “i” was pop and industry didnt actually listen to the song.. its fantastic
From a philosophical perspective this interview has aged very well, when considering Kdot vs Drake
His words here are such a backbone to all the bars during the beef
Love Kendrick man. A true legend in the making🙏
I remember hearing “I” and it felt soulful to me and it felt like something I needed to hear. It was right on time. “I love myself!”
THEY NOT LIKE US
who is here after 6:16
I love genuine people like this. No matter what the world might say about his craft, they don't know what's going on in the mind of Kendrick. Sampling music from the Isley Brothers etc. Is what this industry needs, not to have different flavor, but to praise legends, and for people to realize the origins of hip hop. As he said it's easy to diss someone and to talk about your wealth, but really why do you rap? Music is the rhythmic poetry of life and rappers who have that luxury should consider writing about something genuine, not generic
So Ebro says 'i' has a sound that hasn't been heard since OutKast...yet Crooked Smile was made just last year. OK. I see you.
That was straight up pop my dude.
MrThekikster you saying sampling Jennifer Hudson was pop or the message was pop? Either way, I disagree man.
Trevor Katende TLC was a pop music group that he sampled but Jennifer Hudson did sing it. Jennifer Hudson is RnB but the song that was sampled was definitely pop.
MrThekikster i sounds more pop than crooked smile.
Quinton Porter Not really, the female vocals really give it a pop feel. i definitely sounds a lot like funk which the sample comes from.
This dudes honesty and mindset is beyond amazing. I love this guy and what he stands for.

This is my favorite Kendrick interview, I watch this interview almost every month and I watch it all😭🔥... There's so powerful words or message on this interviee.
Top 5 current era of hip hop artist: (body of work, potential longevity, talent, commercial success, impact, storytelling, songwriting, hit making, live shows, rhyme skills)
1. Drake - overall the hottest mc in the game right now without question. Period, hate it or love it look at his criteria and show me a rapper hotter than drake right now from this era. Very versatile, has a plethora of flows, and when drake raps he's undeniably one of the best in the game. Just watch some of the interviews of the greats( jayz, nas, Raekwon etc) they all know it. I'm sorry you can not, not put drake at number one. forget the hate. Show me, prove to me that overall he's not the best in the game right now, just look at the stats they don't lie.
2. Kendrick Lamar- again without question has had the biggest impact on the culture in this era arguably ever, with just his first album. However he only has one album. needs to put more consistent work out to push for number one in my opinion. But the sky is the limit for him. Could change after his sophomore album for better or worse.
3. J.Cole- out sold kanye west in album sales when they went head to head. Consistent in making hits very lyrical arguably more skilled than kendrick and drake depending on the listener has potential to be number one. However thus far has lacked the impact that kendrick and drake have put on the game thus far. High potential but needs to be more active.
Wale - very intelligent rapper, very savvy, and clever. Good song maker and very passionate about rapping. I don't think wale gets the credit he deserves has been very consistent throughout the years speaks on important topics and always brings a great prospective. Wale is very unique and maybe has the best work ethic of all the rappers mentioned.
5. Big Krit- talent wise he'd be number two on this list. Maybe the most underrated mc in the game. What can't krit do. With better marketing krit would be much more recognized than he is. Can produce a song from scratch top to bottom with great quality and sound. There's nothing krit can't do as a rapper and could very well end up at least top three when this era is over.
I'm a huge hip hop fan been listening to hip hop literally forever. I built this list off stats and facts as well as my own ear for hip hop and some personal opinions
Please comment;
Best post in the comment section so far. TOO ACCURATE. These nygas are the real leaders of the new school. Vic Mensa, Vince Staples, Logic, Chance the Rapper are like the new school B squad. There fucking amazing too tho lol. I think A$ap Rocky, Meek Mill, Gambino, Mac Miller etc deserve to be on that list too (if it were 10 rappers)
Why do you think Wale, Krit and even Cole to some degree are "slept on"?? Do they lack some type of mainstream appeal? Is it their records? Not enough controversy surrounding their names? Its certainly not their skill or talent lol...
Actually Section 80 was his first album
^^This that real shit^^
Finally. An unbiased comment.
Best/ most successful+alive in order Most potential
1. Eminem-all around 1. Logic-needs hits
2. J Cole-skill and message 2. Kendrick- needs more hits
3. Kendrick-skill and message 3. J Cole- needs more hits
4. Drake-his music just sounds good 4. Mac Miller-needs hits and stay off drugs
5. Jay Z-he doesn't write apparently 5. A shit ton of upcoming rappers
forgot nas
You lost your credibility when you put Eminem at #1.
Ludacris?
rangersbaseball2
haha yea i'm a little bias toward em, I shoulda put nas up there but ludicrous hmm..
LOL Eminem is not better then Nas hes just more Mainstream this list not accurate.
Got me dropping tears right now. His insight is just so inspiring and deep. I'd really love to meet this dude one day. Such a beautiful human being in every single way I'm sure.
Going into Kendrick archives
I love Kendricks attitude! every interview people try to get him to diss others. But he stays humble to himself and others. That's pretty dope to see nowadays. When so many rappers gotta start beefs with other rappers.
"how do you stay the same when everything around you is changing so fast?" "i keep genuine people around me" what a great answer by kendrick, man
What an awesome, genuine artist. A man that truly thinks deeply and deserves every ounce of success he has achieved. Love the Thundercat shoutouts too.

Bhunk Dirty 😂😂😂😂
I think the thing I really love about Kendrick is that he's so humble man.. He just cares about music. I'm pretty sure he doesn't smoke and drink cause he wants a clear mind when he records. Kendrick looks real focused right now. I think Kendrick Lamar understands how rare it is in mainstream hip-hop these to be as big as he is and as lyrical and conscious he is. He's using this plateau to actually have a positive impact on culture. It's pretty awesome.
This had aged beautifully in 2024
This is my first time commenting on Hot 97 but this interview made me clap so many times thinking "yes" so many times. Great job Kendrick and you guys touched the best topics keep it up!
