Because it's relatable...there's a sense of belonging for some through the feeling of sadness. It concretes those who can't clearly feel other emotions to our reality. Sort of why Shinji chose to stay. He'd rather live in his own true reality than be "happy" in the instrumentality

This is one of the best covers I’ve seen
The way this song mixes emotions is mindblowing. The contrast between the lyrics and the music represents perfectly the feeling of existing in a dying world and not being able to do anything about it, while still wanting to exist and do your best to stay alive every day, even with suicidal thoughs. Evangelion fans are weird but damn this show has some of the best music i've had the pleasure of listening to.
