Please do. I had a chance to make a short drive. It was a good feeling overall, nicely balanced car with somehow luxury touch. Mostly pluses, no dealing with plugin electricity charging, that is a plus for me. On minus side was really small rear luggage department, a price for place for battery. I am really waiting for your more detailed review that is always the best available on the net.
Gorazd Leben „really small rear luggage“? Really? Yes, there is a difference compared to the non-hybrid versions but not to much! (i think round about 100 l) 😊
Hands-down, this is the most thorough car review I've ever watched! I can't believe it held my attention for an entire hour. You are a gifted presenter, Thomas.
I own a 2019 CRV Hybrid and can give more specifics for all you looking at this wonderful vehicle. I have watched many test reviews on this car and I can say for sure that they are all reviewed the same way so after watching this video there is no need to view anymore. One mistake they all have made is in regards to the drive modes. Let me just clear this up. There are 3 buttons & 4 drive modes with 1 mode being totally useless and another not so good. The drive modes are ECO, SPORT & EV mode. The ECO button switches the car between ECO & NORM mode when pressed again. I get the best gas mileage in NORM which I will describe below. The ECO mode is in my opinion, for city street traffic only. The EV mode is completely useless. I don’t even know why the CRV has this mode because any decent amount of acceleration and the car jumps out of EV and into NORM even with a fully charge battery. Maybe it's for city streets? Now for the SPORT mode. All reviewers make the same mistake and seem to think that SPORT modes means that when you “gun” the accelerator the car will act like a sports car & practically fly to top speed. They say they don’t notice much of a difference from the NORM mode and don’t care for it because it uses more fuel. I can tell you that they really aren’t using it correctly. And after using SPORT mode myself, I love it, but that’s when I have the opportunity to use it. SPORT mode is designed to be used on twisty, hilly, mountainous roads where extra torque is needed to power up & around bends and get up those steep hills without feeling like you’re in an under-powered hybrid. And believe me it works, and oh what fun! Now the fuel economy. The CRV’s computer always shows that I get better mpg than actuality. So here are real world figures from almost a year of driving. All figures in MPG are in U.S gallons. Mode: NORM: 36.75mpg+ (6.45L/100k) combo freeway & street. The CRV display showed 42mpg (5.6L/100K). Street only I got between 38mpg and my high of 43.07mpg (5.46L/100K). CRV display showed 47.04 (5L/100K). ECO: used with one full tank of fuel & it made the car feel very heavy and under-powered. It also only got 36.75mpg (6.4L/100K). So, it is my belief ECO=City. The lowest gas mileage I got was 35mpg (6.2L/100K) and that was probably because I was playing around with SPORT mode. So there you have it. Real world figures. For those looking at the Toyota RAV4. I have owned Toyota & loved my 2000 4-runner. I have been in the new RAV4 at the auto convention and if you are having trouble deciding between the two vehicles then it should come down to the feel. The RAV4 interior has the feel of lower quality, a bit plasticky, very much truck-like. Siting in the CRV you'll notice many refinements such as the soft upholstery & dash board. The console instrumentation seems less cluttered. Definitely feels like sitting in a sedan and not an SUV.
Once again a very interesting in depth review that covers so much information about this car. The BMW at 49:30 was shifting! This is a big change from a typical hybrid, but I wonder why some of the decisions /compromises have been made. If the battery was closer to say 10KwH capacity the car could do a sensible amount of driving on pure electric power - e.g. in town to remove the localized pollution. Possibly it would need to be PHEV to ensure the battery can be fully charged when needed. Alternatively it would seem like a possible platform for 3 types of drive train - 2KwH battery as currently supplied, PHEV variant with bigger battery and full BEV with say 64KwH battery. I know it's not that simple, and you have to find somewhere to put the batteries, but the concept of this car (ICE charges battery, electric motor drives car) looks like something that could lend itself to flexible configurations.
Great review. I test drove one yesterday and am looking forward to owning one. It will be my first dip into the greener car market and fits my needs perfectly.

Thomas thank you for your review. You help me to take in consideration this car, which finally I ordered.. Probably I' ll get on September 2020. I orders it without leather not-ventilated seats but AWD. It's quitter that's RAV4 (my second choice) and also in RAV4 it was for me difficult to get in and out (my head was hitting the roof, I'm not that tall, only 1,80 m). Yes the absence of the spare tyre is an issue, I hope the spare kit would do the trick. Keep up the good work, because the car journalists really help us choose a car( of course after a test drive of both cars)
Hello Thomas, Thanks for the nice review. I noticed a lot of noice et hi speed and I also noticed that your radio is off. Every Honda CR-V has Active Noise Control. I think for this function the radio must be ON. Is this correct? Have tested this? Please let me know. Thanks and keep up the nice reviews. Grtz
Such a nice update but why have Honda left the small 7” infotainment screen, Honda is underestimating the importance of technology in modern vehicles, a simple 8 to 10” screen update would have opened up a bigger market for this car, just look at what other manufacturers are doing.
Nice video, I like the car. How do you feel the stability of the car at 180 km/h? How do you get the audio system. I read that it produced by Clarion. That means it must be good.
I wish Honda would make the rear 60/40 split seats so that the larger seat was on the right. It would make it easier to put longer and wider items that go all the way past the front seat when it is folded down. That way you can still have a passenger sit behind you.
Awesome review. Do you happen to remember fuel consumption when you were driving at 140-180 km/h? It would be very interesting to compare because at such high speeds with such high wind resistance petrol engines would have rather high fuel consumption.
Honestly, is it hard to say what was real consumption on highway while driving 140? Video is great, but not saying fuel economy figures on highway putting shadow on whole video.. Honesty and truth should be way to go..
I like such approach in hybrids. Hope to switch some day from my Civic. Also waiting for new Honda models soon: HR-V and Civic. Thanks for new Jazz and don't forget Hondas in your reviews :)
Hi Thomas, let me help you out a bit with the engine, Hybrid System and difference to Toyota. The Honda i-MMD System in the CR-V is powered by an 2.0L LFA Atkinson-Cycle engine with i-VTEC and EVTC (electric varialbe timing control). This allows it to freely switch between Atkinson-Cycle and Otto-Cycle. (On side of Toyota the similar technology is called VVT-iW). Fuel injection is done via MPI (multi point injection). The thermal efficiency of the engine is 40% The Honda i-MMD System uses as you said two electric motors. How does it differ from Toyotas HSD System, that also uses two electric motors? The Honda i-MMD System depending on the driving situation switches between 100% serial hybrid mode (engine powers generator and generator powers electric motor for driving) to 100% parallel hybrid mode (engine directly powers the wheel and electric motor supports). The Toyota HSD System is power split system that is fixed roughly about 21% serial and 78% parallel. The hybrid batteries of both systems are pretty similar in capacity, they are intended as hybrid electric vehicle and not Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. As you wondered about the EV-Mode and engine directly mode. Bear in mind that it will change between full serial(EV, Hybrid) and full parallel(Engine) mode. In Parallel mode the electric motor will assist or brake the combustion engine to keep it in optimal operation condition. This is why you also can see EV and recuperation in full engine mode at times.
@@autogefuehl For further details, check out this picture of an Honda Presentation for the Accord Hybrid. In German the word would be "Lastpunktverschiebung" data.motor-talk.de/data/galleries/0/422/7224/73990531/honda-hybrid-strategy-1433066948189164635.jpg
MPI means potentially easy LPG upgrade, nice. Regular car with lpg is already compareable to hybrid in fuel costs, what a nice lpg hybrid it could be :)
Excellent detailed review. What is your assessment of the CR-V Hybrid in snow, mud, or off-road conditions? Do you think the new drive train system will be as responsive as the RAV4 hybrid or a Subaru? Thank you.
Hi Thomas. Great review and yes, very interesting! But is this not technology which outdated before it is launched with those numbers (5l/100)? Compared to a PHEV this is not good. New cars are PHEVs. Or am I wrong? Kr Thomas from Denmark
Hi Thomas, great job as usual! As a suggestion: would be good to do a roller test on the hybrid AWD vehicles. Because most of them are anything but AWD.
Euro-spec looks a lot nicer than what we get in Canada. The extra ‘wood’ trim along the centre console is a nice touch, but the LED fog lights and HUD would be good features to have in our market, not to mention the hybrid drivetrain option.
Another excellent in depth review however I was hoping for your opinion on the infotainment system. It seems to have received a lot of negative criticism so I was looking forward to your view.
Those MPG figures are awesome! It's a shame Honda doesn't have a Hybrid CR-V available in the U.S. This would even beat the Hybrid Toyota RAV4 MPG if it was available.
@Jeff G. Maybe a Volkswagen Atlas is another option with a VR6, or a Mazda or Honda. I couldn't recommend Toyota because they feel so cheap on the inside.
Thanks for a thorough review! I'm hoping this vehicle makes it to the US as a 2020 model as it strikes the right balance of features I'm looking for. Your test drive indicated 47 mpg US which is even better than the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid which is currently available for sale in the US. Our EPA has it rated at 40 mpg. The single fixed gear ratio gearbox is an interesting approach and seems like a good alternative to the CVT found in the RAV4. I drive in a hilly, mountainous area as well as on a generally flat terrain. Do you think this powertrain woud do well on steep hills? I currently drive a car with a V-6 engine which does not strain when climbing. I do hope that Honda updates the Infotainment System with the exact version found in the Honda Accord. I prefer the combination of physical buttons and the touch screen.
I watched this review too, but I was asking you personal opinion as you or your company at least have tested both cars and had opportunity to experience them in person. When we look premium suvs today (even some non premium) and asking prices for hybrid or EV model as ecological vehicles, it is little a bit hypocritical from manufacturers to put so high asking prices in comparison to diesel models because in the end people will mostly buy diesel option as it cheaper. Rav4 and CR-V are still somehow in some normal price range for people with families who put environment in equation when buying a family SUV. I would like to know what Tomas thinks about Rav4 hybrid? I know it is not,, drivers" car, but not every car needs to be BMW or Porsche.
Hm, the CRV has great interior space definitely. However the recent oil dilution issues at Honda made me a little suspicious. The RAV4 seems to be more reliable.

This type of propulsion will be the future of long-range/small battery road-vehicles. The electric drivetrain is by far cheaper than the common ones with gearboxes, clutch etc.. and an ICE that is out of the manual control by the stupidest around (driver) could be much cheaper, more efficient and having a longer lifespan the todays ICEs. The ICE has to have the Power output what is technical necessary (speed weight incline) and hasn't to be three times bigger because of the acceleration necessities to get up a Ramp on the highway, (and of cause for the lack of penis- length) Nissan got these since a few years in their e-Power cars, and we will see this in the future in every model in every size.
no more 2.4l for U.S. at least, only the 1.5T & the 2.0 for the hybrid of course. Great vid of this; & while i like the car & even possibly would consider it over the 1.5T w/ CVT, two things r at issue: one is the durability of the system /parts for the long life/distance that many of us Americans use this type of car for. Two is that at least one tester/reviewer who used it for back/forth over a mere 2000foot, or 600m elevation rise/drop, got a meager mpg of around 26, which is reeeelly horrific frankly, vs the Rav4 hybrid which had no problem in same long loop, with its nearly 40mpg or even slightly higher. Very sad about this because otherwise, i think the CR V is the superior car, in every way. SOooo, would love to see more testing in varied terrains, etc, of both this & the Rav4 hybrid.
Very interesting review. This is not yet available in the US. Hope to be able to buy one in the near future. I own a 2014 CR-V with the 2.4 NA engine and I constantly get low 30 mpg in highway driving (about 7.5l/100km). I look forward to the day I could get 5-6 l fuel consumption with the same vehicle. Well done Thomas!
When giving so much attention to driving modes, would be really nice to see small window in the corner showing instrument cluster as you drive through town and country roads. Is ICE more often audible at motorway speeds compared to regular petrol engine? Main concerns is frequent engine sound changes, would be worrying for asleep passengers:( not even mentioning even calm overtakes.
Very interesting concept, I believe that it has a bright future. No need for looking for available charging stations, no calculating how far will I go, when to charge, at the same time in city it drives on electricity. No brainer as we are used to. By the way, when pushing pedal to the metal, they say that you should remove leg for just a very short time and than push again and car program would understand what you are trying and it would lower revolutions a bit. Maybe you could check it?
@@autogefuehl It was explained to me that it would shift to a program for acceleration adjusting to more efficient ratio for more power (or maybe torque?), maybe like we would shift to another more adequate gear, instead of staying on highest RPMS all the time during the acceleration.
Nice you said about the problems with the 1,5 engine. You getting improved & more informative review for your subscribers. I hope they will solve the gasoline oil-dilution, at next generation. Excess fuel vapors in Honda’s 1.5-liter engine aren’t burning off & diluting the engine’s oil. This raises the oil level, triggers warning lights, creates a terrible smell, and brings into question the prospect of long-term damage caused by the oil’s inability to properly protect the engine. Updates involve transmission & engine software. These changes will allow the engine to warm up quicker, reducing the possibility of unevaporated fuel collecting in the engine oil early in the drive cycle. Ignition timing, CVT control and air-conditioning operations are modified to help the engine warm up and retain heat. Honda is addressing similar problems in vehicles with 1.5L turbo engines in China and Canada. In China, Honda recalled 380.000 vehicles. As i read , owners in WARMER climates may notice normal variations in oil levels that do not necessarily represent a problem. At US ,400.000 CR-Vs & Civics were recalled , for software upgrade. My opinion is the problem will not be fixed by a simple software. This is the cheap way.. Its the design of the fuel injection system which makes it weak. Watch below how explains it , a good honest mechanic th-cam.com/video/VIRBsn3xfoc/w-d-xo.html About 2020 CR-V model, i beleive is not fully hybrid. Its like the system ,german cars use with the 42V battery for regeneration. Comparable with other hybrids : Fuel consumption of Honda, will be higher outside city at the moment combustion engine takes over directly. Isn't only from the higher weight. I would call it a light version of hybrid technology, specialized at regeneration. But its an interesting idea,in general. Will be reliable enough for us? Time will tell. My advise, if you wish to buy Honda with combustion engine : Avoid the 1,5 engine. Also choose one with manual transmission. More reliable & cheap to fix, for long life owning.
today It's called serial-Hybrid a rather old technology first used in 1903 ! for the first ship driven by Diesel Engines en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandal_(tanker) and than of cause for Diesel-Locomotives and other heavy equipment like mining Trucks
Agreed. Also Ferdinand Porsche came up with some designs of an electric motor vehicle powered by batteries, additionally carrying an onboard petrol engine powering a genny to charge the batteries while underway - the 1903 Porsche-Lohner. His designs also used direct-drive hub motors. And the company built pure EV vehicles too, without the onboard petrol engine. Thanks Thomas for the fun ride and interesting demonstration of Honda's series hybrid interpretation using an electric motor drive. Greeting to Holger too!
Honda is vague about it. Good answer would be that it may do that, but NOT all the time. It would defeat the purpose of dynamic switching between the three driving modes.
Pretty well maintenance free. The batteries have at least an 8 year warranty or was it 10. No starter and no transmission, way less parts to go wrong on this hybrid system.
Great, comprehensive review. This is a very clever piece of automotive engineering. A very well designed cabin and boot (important for life!). Honda infotainment not the best. But, the battery is too small to offer significant low speed driving. I think it would be best with diesel as the generator and a 60km e range (10KW+?). But diesel is dead - thanks Wolfsburg. Also, too much thinking about what the car is doing. Cars need to be simpler for non enthusiasts (ie most people).

Radio would disrupt the verbal commentary
Such a nice update but why have Honda left the small 7” infotainment screen, Honda is underestimating the importance of technology in modern vehicles, a simple 8 to 10” screen update would have opened up a bigger market for this car, just look at what other manufacturers are doing.
Do you have any idea why Honda rates the CRV Hybrid at 181 HP and the Accord Hybrid at 212 even though they use the same system?
Nice video, I like the car. How do you feel the stability of the car at 180 km/h? How do you get the audio system. I read that it produced by Clarion. That means it must be good.
Was quite nice indeed! And not too wobbly at higher speed as I said
Great review, I loved when he put more than 180 km/h. this is a real test!!! I am exited to get my new car this year!!!
Great Video. Nice work!
Very thorough review. Thanks Autogefuhl;
Bravo, Thomas! Super review.
Complex drivetrain, indeed.
thanks Mario!
Does it have a spare tire? At 19:25 I saw a jack but didn't see a spare tire.
HenryHonda no, they put the battery instead.
Thanks! all cars have high consumption with that indeed :)
Honestly, is it hard to say what was real consumption on highway while driving 140?
Video is great, but not saying fuel economy figures on highway putting shadow on whole video..
Honesty and truth should be way to go..
About 7.5-8liters at 140kmh
What is better for everyday driving, the two or four wheel drive hybrid crv?
Very enjoyable review and great to see hybrid tech is advancing, even if it's complicated to understand :)
Would you get this one over the Tesla model Y?
I like such approach in hybrids. Hope to switch some day from my Civic. Also waiting for new Honda models soon: HR-V and Civic. Thanks for new Jazz and don't forget Hondas in your reviews :)
Hi Thomas,
let me help you out a bit with the engine, Hybrid System and difference to Toyota.
The thermal efficiency of the engine is 40%
The Honda i-MMD System uses as you said two electric motors.
Thanks for further info!

MPI means potentially easy LPG upgrade, nice. Regular car with lpg is already compareable to hybrid in fuel costs, what a nice lpg hybrid it could be :)

Nice video. How does this car compare to new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV?
cheers! Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/xuuZ5MNHN94/w-d-xo.html
Stay away from that brand! It is the most unreliable brand. Get a Honda or Mazda, i couldn't recommend Toyota for the low quality.
Excellent detailed review. What is your assessment of the CR-V Hybrid in snow, mud, or off-road conditions? Do you think the new drive train system will be as responsive as the RAV4 hybrid or a Subaru? Thank you.
Thanks! Hmm good question
Thank you, enjoyed the video. If you don't mind: where is the shooting location?
Thanks, feel free to share and recommend :-)
At Erlensee, near Honda Germany headquarters
Were you on the Autobahn with your high speed test?
Is this set up just like adding ICE in to BMW I3 ? ( without plug in )
rathe the other way around =)
Hi Thomas. Great review and yes, very interesting! But is this not technology which outdated before it is launched with those numbers (5l/100)? Compared to a PHEV this is not good. New cars are PHEVs. Or am I wrong? Kr Thomas from Denmark
yeah I know what you mean.
Hi Thomas, great job as usual! As a suggestion: would be good to do a roller test on the hybrid AWD vehicles. Because most of them are anything but AWD.
Thanks 🙏 u mean loose gravel on rear axle?
I mean having 2 or perhaps 3 wheels on rollers (no traction). This will illustrate better how they will behave on snow and ice. Thanks for replying.
hard to find an area where u can do that actually
Hi Thomas, not sure you got me. Please search for "roller tests" on TH-cam and you will see what I mean.

Where would you use it? In the few countries that have sufficient infrastructure?
@@TheSynecdoche in Europe it's ok.
Is the 2.0l engine in the crv hybrid engine direct injected?
N/A engines do not use direct injection.
Great review
Will the American version have a panoramic sun roof? Also how is interior noise? Thank you
Best you ask Honda USA! 🙄
If Toyota will make the rav4 quiet like the crv and the interior this nice, then the rav4 will be the go to hybrid but for now I will take this
Euro-spec looks a lot nicer than what we get in Canada. The extra ‘wood’ trim along the centre console is a nice touch, but the LED fog lights and HUD would be good features to have in our market, not to mention the hybrid drivetrain option.
They told me the hybrid would not come
Another excellent in depth review however I was hoping for your opinion on the infotainment system.
Thanks! Well it can use recuperation, but a true EV would use more recuperation or a PHEV
I’d say the hybrid is more suitable in hilly condition due to instant EM torque for uphill and regeneration when going downhill.
Thumbs up for the balancing trick.
Why didn't HOnda put in the better newer infotainment system into the CRV??? The Accord has had it for over 2 years
Best you ask Honda why!
Which would you choose between rav4 hybrid awd or this crv?
compare it here: th-cam.com/video/z0pcYRFlLe0/w-d-xo.html
Autogefühl But this engine is not the turbo with the known problem..
@@thanoscy The Honda or Mazda have the best quality compared to cheap Toyota interior.
Why honda does not provide 360 camera on her vehicles?
Because they want you to buy acura.

I got a CRV 2020. It is a great car for the city but the wind noise in the highway is disappointing. It feels as if your window is a bit open.
Well Japanese cars are made for Japan.
German cars are made for the Autobahn.
How about reviewing the new Honda Jazz Thomas?
were did they put the batteries
This type of propulsion will be the future of long-range/small battery road-vehicles. The electric drivetrain is by far cheaper than the common ones with gearboxes, clutch etc.. and an ICE that is out of the manual control by the stupidest around (driver) could be much cheaper, more efficient and having a longer lifespan the todays ICEs. The ICE has to have the Power output what is technical necessary (speed weight incline) and hasn't to be three times bigger because of the acceleration necessities to get up a Ramp on the highway, (and of cause for the lack of penis- length)
Nissan got these since a few years in their e-Power cars, and we will see this in the future in every model in every size.
no more 2.4l for U.S. at least, only the 1.5T & the 2.0 for the hybrid of course.
Well done Thomas!
cheers Wade!
I wont add another camera in front of instruments while doing a long driving moderation because thats a safety issue.
Sound is like any other ICE when its on
Very interesting concept, I believe that it has a bright future.
Hm what would that change with the pedal? Got any more info on that?
@@autogefuehl It was explained to me that it would shift to a program for acceleration adjusting to more efficient ratio for more power (or maybe torque?), maybe like we would shift to another more adequate gear, instead of staying on highest RPMS all the time during the acceleration.
Very interesting review. You are Bravissimo! I subscribed
Welcome !!
Watch below how explains it , a good honest mechanic
th-cam.com/video/VIRBsn3xfoc/w-d-xo.html
About 2020 CR-V model, i beleive is not fully hybrid.
Its like the system ,german cars use with the 42V battery for regeneration.
Comparable with other hybrids :
Fuel consumption of Honda, will be higher outside city at the moment combustion engine takes over directly.
Isn't only from the higher weight.
I would call it a light version of hybrid technology, specialized at regeneration.
But its an interesting idea,in general.
Will be reliable enough for us?
Time will tell.
My advise, if you wish to buy Honda with combustion engine :
Avoid the 1,5 engine.
Also choose one with manual transmission.
More reliable & cheap to fix, for long life owning.
Interesting concept, there are some city buses with such hybrid tech (ICE powering EM).
today It's called serial-Hybrid a rather old technology first used in 1903 ! for the first ship driven by Diesel Engines en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandal_(tanker) and than of cause for Diesel-Locomotives and other heavy equipment like mining Trucks
I think the sport mode engages the ICE and the EV to both drive the wheels from the get go doesn’t it?
Honda is vague about it. Good answer would be that it may do that, but NOT all the time. It would defeat the purpose of dynamic switching between the three driving modes.
The engine seems to be predictable, I wonder if they considered introducing noise cancelling through the speakers.
gmax876 yes they did
Does it have a panoramic sunroof?
Depends on the trim level. The highest trim level has one.
Why in the US they don't give you the option to get the panoramic roof?
The Rav4 is available with a panoramic roof in the US but not in Canada so it more then likely won't be available here on the CR-V either. :(

how about maintenance of that hybrid system?
