When the footage is clear, AI upscaling can do magic. Most people tried it on old VHS footage and didn't like that a 480p cannot become flawless 4K. I saw someone taking actual 4K, lowering it to 720p... re-upscaling it with Topaz and the upscaled 4K actually looked better in some scenarios. It is amazing that AI will make in the near future. So many camera manufacturers were pushing for the 8K and now it will be almost obsolete. A sharp awesome 4K 30fps will easily become 8K 60fps with the AI progressing even more.

I am deff going to atleast try this software on the footage we're doing now for an action film. As it worked out, we are recording at 720p, as we are using the older panasonic hvx200 camcorder for production. Firstly, the 720 this camera takes looks amazing, so I look forward to seeing how much it can be improved using this program.
I totally agree, most of the times is super, there is only one thing I think should make it better, is the possibility to have it alsonon ipad, I use the one on PC but for short trips I prefer to carry only the ipad it might make me use better my time without carrying a big PC.
I don't even think it's necessary to first upscale the source footage to 4K and work in that resolution if the whole video is going to be originally on a 1080p timeline. The way it upscales graphics, text, etc., is totally amazing. I just export the final video to 1080p and then upscale it to 4K and done. Looks fantastic.

This just made shooting with my Magic Langern 700D completely viable. Even though it says it can shoot 4.2K undebayered RAW its actually 1200p which was a bummer. This will make it 100% worth the hassle

Please can you help me to understand why 4k is better than 1080? Don't we want some softness to the image for more feel? That crispy 4k just looks off in some way, maybe it's the hard edges, bit metalic looking, hard, unreal, color too primary. Maybe I'm a bit last century, but it 'feels' better.
You can always turn down the sharpness to get that cinematic look
But the details are what separate 4k from 1080p and so on

What about Powerdirector? Topaz AI is very costly for me.

What about upscaling iPhone video to look like it was shot on a Sony is it possible
Can you compare upscaling to1080 to 4K versus interpolating 30 to 60 frames to see which ones is easy, and have more quality
You forget one thing, it's slow.. it works for few clips like for your showreel but i don't use it on every clip (but I was impressed too)
It's pretty fast when upscaling HD to 4K, it's the Frame Interpolation that takes long (at least from my experience).

Have you experimented with how well it works on lower quality source material? Like iPhone 240fps slowmo or GH5 180fps slowmo?
I haven't tested it on low resolution stuff but I guess anything at 720P will still do well up to 4K because my 240 fps on the A7sIII is quite soft but looks great when upscaled!

that means I could shoot with my a7 III 4k 30FPS and get 2x interpolation to match my a7S III 4k 60.

Does the Topaz have a way to "lighten" dark videos as well as make them more clear or de-blurred? Also, is it hard to learn? I tried a free trial of it and don't think I was quite understanding it. Here's the main type of project I'll be working on. SO tell me if you think my best bet is Topaz or Hitpaw.....I shot a lot of video of my late friend and his bands during the80's and 90's. Usually in small dark clubs. Naturally I want to 'clear' them up, and lighten them a little. I have a pretty fast cpu now. So which one do you think would be better in my particular circumstance? And also consider the learning curve. Thanks ever so much for any advise you can give me.

This program is a lifesaver. I do VFX work and short films, but am limited in my budget and only have a 1080p dslr camera and a laptop that can only render 3d up to certain resolutions in a reasonable timeframe. With this, I can still use my sort-of-outdated equipment, render my 3d work in 1080p and get shots in 1080p, then upgrade both to fit modern standards and to look good on 4k monitors without having to break my back to get thousands of dollars of new high quality equipment. Really great stuff.

I'm not sure why, perhaps I'm overly critical, but my results always appear 'processed', which I don't like. Tried the newest version also. Therefore, I'll wait for another year, even though the Black Friday deal was tempting.

It's good but cannot be compared to Topaz! It's crazy when you look at them side by side on your monitor (before TH-cam Compression)

Takes forever to upscale a simple 40 minute 1080p video to 4K resolution. And my graphic card is GeForce RTX 4070 and my PC is new 2TB. One video, 40 minutes= 1day 6 hours in Topaz AI.

Hi Jacques. Amazing channel. Thanks so much for sharing all of your skills. Great to listen to a South African for a change. No sure which programs you use for your editing but I using Premiere Pro. Not a big APPLE fan so not using macbooks as my laptop of choice. I know I can follow recomendations from ADOBE themselves but what would you say will be a good setup (hardware) to do some descent 4K editing?

I think 360 to 720p and 480 maybe to 1080 but it all depends on the quality of the footage. I feel like 1080 to 4K is the sweet spot but I've seen some great results on 480 footage also!

Time for rendering is 4 minute hd to 4k 6 hours. Takes up hard drive space. Difference yes a little but not worth it

Damn, that's crazy! I'm always worried when I shoot weddings hand have to half my resolution when I do the flower confetti in 120 frames.
I bought this program to improve some low concert footage. It did a great job but it took 12 hours to process a two minute clip. I'm using an older macbook pro, 2.4 GHz with 32 GB of ram. Does this processing time sound right to you? Also, I tried to process a 2nd clip over night and the next morning Topaz told me the process failed.
My Dell laptop from 2012 with a i7 max 3,2 Ghz, integrated radeon video card with 1gb and 8 gb ddr3 ram took 20 mins to turn a 1k 1 minute video to 4k. so it must be the macbook is trash. Btw its doing it as i write here with 2 youtube videos and 8 open tabs in chrome.

@@helmet212 That's your problem, slow GPU & CPU will hurt your rendering times, as for a 3060 can get a 10 minute vid done in 2 hours

tbh my upscaled premier pro looks the same as topaz , i asked a refund as was taking 20h lol and coudnt see the difference with premier pro upscaling . alo never seen more than 4k option when trying to select the upscaling
I find that Topaz does a much better job compared to Resolve's upscaling but I haven't tried Premiere.

Topaz Video AI is so slow. I ended up going back to using CapCut. So, a tip for people looking to get TPL Video AI: unless your computer has at least 64 GB of RAM, it won't be worth the $300 price. LOL! My Mac has 32 GB of RAM, and it took 5 minutes to render a 15-second clip. 😂😂😂😂😂
I have 64gb ram and it will take me 48min to upscale a 4k 13 min video. So topaz is just a slow software
