I don't think I've ever clicked on a video notification so quickly ha. These videos are next level - you are in a league of your own here on TH-cam. Thanks for all you do!
Dude I love this guy, not once have I ever been compelled to spend money but watching this channel to achieve this level of work. He uses consumer level gear and makes movie quality results while half the other guys are dropping 20k and their content is no where near this amazing!
While the excellent techniques mentioned here don't require expensive or extra gear from what you already have, I do argue your "consumer level" and $20k comment. The FX3 itself is a baby cinema camera and marketed at professionals so is decidedly not a consumer level camera. Add up the prices of the gear listed in the description, along with the MusicBed subscription then the total is over $24k. If you also add in the lighting and other gear and software used for this video then it's easily double that. The point should be made that expensive gear doesn't make you a better cinematographer, but it does make doing quality cinematography easier. If this video was done with a sub $2k setup, or with a sub $1k phone then your comments would hold true--but as he notes this is mostly existing client footage and effort wasn't made to shoot dedicated footage for this tutorial.
@@catinmyhat I can agree to that for sure I just like that the videos he make aren’t centered around the gear and more of the creative aspects of it which in my opinion is breath of fresh air and for people just starting out they can watch it and not feel bad because they are using cheaper equipment. I’m not saying the fx3 is cheap it’s just a lot more obtainable then say a red or something else
I wanted to thank you for this comment as well. I just literally told someone 2 mins ago that I want a new lens, I need a new SSD, I need.... I need... I need... and I finally just told him. You know what, I am going to just focus on content and quality with what I have, and do the best I can. I don't have 6-8k to drop on things. So seeing this comment was very synchronistic for me. I will stick with in camera cards and won't worry about bringing my ninja V plus with SSD.
THIS IS EVERYTHING! The way you simplified the "cinematic" term into contrast is perfect-- and it's applicable across all parts of the film making process. Great video 💥👏🏾
I'm a hobbyist photographer, and I've had a few people ask if I could do video. The tips on lighting and color contrast and simple ways to achieve them give me ideas on how I can do more than just aim at them and move around. Thank you!
To be honest, this is my first time here and I'm hypnotized by your simple story telling yet very compelling . Learned a lot in less than 10 minutes than watching other gurus out there.
Following you for a while, and I still consider this channel as one of the best out there. Always useful, and very humble. Well done mate, I recommended you to my students.
I think contrast when it comes to cinematography and creating images that are appealing is more than just creating pockets of light to dark! That's a great step but I think also understanding your contrast ratios in correlation to the scene you wanna shoot will help accentuate your areas of contrast! Also room tone is very important
Great tips!!!! I love that you added sound as a way of making images more cinematic but your shots are almost always moving which also makes them amazing, and that often requires a stabilizer.
one thing I learnt from Crafford is frame rate contrast, this is definitely the feature that differate the great film makers out ! and the final goal is too make the scene as dynamic and personal as It should be
The sounds do such heavy, lifting. Really enjoyed the sounds around the dashboard of the vehicle, the wave sounds. I just about every sound. They were like treasures.
Man, I love your work, and your tutorials are heaven sent. Because you're not just a youtube content creator, your work speaks for itself. I'm currently deciding between an A7rV or an a7iv. I want a hybrid video/photography camera. But my main focus will be video. I just also want to take amazing photos while being able to get a cinematic look. I've been itching to figure out what camera to get and upgrade my a6400 system.
i love the higher level concenptual frame for making a good video over all, the simple yet effective concept of contrast works great. I have already applied this concept on my work and i have seen great improvement already.
I know this video is not about this, but I'm wondering which picture profile you film in? How do you do color grading? Is it by hand? I ask because you said don't use LUTs.
Jacques Jacques Jacques Jacques... Each time I watch your videos, I start to beam with so much passion to create. Not only do you have incredible visuals. You have this ability to immerse people in your videos. I want to be able to create like you ❤❤
Repping South Africa 💪🏼 honestly one of the best TH-cam channels. There's no gate keeping, your videos are so informative and actually inspire me to get my camera out and try new things
"the idea is to craft your edit so that you can take the viewer on a journey...like a rollercoaster" This guy gets it...held my attention and learned so much!
This video is just perfect. I learned so much and i will be applying all this principles on my videos. I can even spot the contrast on your background whith the diferently coloured lights
This is like how to win friends and influence people but for video. He’s so good and applying these tops will help so much. I always felt like there was something missing when I would edit videos with slow mo and fast clips and I’m happy I know how to do it properly now
Wow, great video. I’m new to cinematography and this was very helpful. You’re right about contrast, once you see it you can’t unsee it. I see it all the time now.
Jacques, your knowledge is stunning and very insteresting, please dont stop making these videos, youre saving me and teaching me a lot. thank you mate.
Great tips man! Specially the one about contrast in sound. I was just about to comment how I loved where you used it near the beginning of the video when the hand covered the mouth and the music stopped. Those segments of your reel and films look and sound incredible!!
Thank you for saying, "Make and feel like what you've seen on the big screen." Cinema is big. Its a theatre dedicated to projecting film in huge sizes. Sometimes size matters..in cinema, this applies.
Why am I only finding you channel now 🧐😆 honestly - wow!!!! So much awesome learning and above all - it’s more about the craft and skill, less about gear 🎉 🙏🙏🙏
This is the most informative video I’ve seen yet, and trust me I’ve seen ALOT. It’s so good to the point I’m pulling out my notebook right now and writing down all of the points mentioned. This is too good👌🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for the tips... and that's why all series/movies (mostly) nowadays look... the same? Netflix-ish? Diversity in that regard would be benifitial as well. For example Paul Thomas Anderson movies. Or different colour grading, or light patterns should work as well. But btw it's great tips about lighting
You make it look easy and I love the examples. But, for me, this is hard to achieve. I simple don’t have “it.” I will continue to work towards these results and greatly appreciate this video.
Jacques, you are amazing. Thank you for the content you make for us. ❤ I just love your images. They look great. Can’t wait to see some more color correction/grading videos from you.
Love what you are doing man, this video is so helpful. I am developing my video marketing and production company, and I am currently fixated on sound design. Your video demonstrated great ways to introduce new elements of sound and gave me some great inspiration for what I can do next to level up my projects.
This is really helpful, however I feel like it needs to be mentioned that there is a difference between CONTRAST for visuals and DYNAMICS for the music. Those are 2 different terms and I feel need to be treated as such
Watched twice. Thanks for the guide! :) I am filming as a traveller. We don't to set up any props especially when constantly reminded with the cost of extra luggage weight. It feels like I'm being pushed to level 100 even as a beginner. I certainly don't have the luxury of having fancy cameras too. Appreciate all the small potent tips I can get to grow faster and capture meaningful but fleeting moments for the World. 🙏🏻🌿
Learned a lot here. May I know what should you do if you can't change or do anything with the spot like when you're making a Travel Video where the subjects/backgrounds have too many colours
I really appreciate u always I watched all your programs have u tot of building an academy where we can sign up and we learn from you, your teaching skills and prowess in being elaborative is magnificent please do you have a website we need it
Thank you for these amazing tips.I see a love of scene you did in Johannesburg. so you organize work shops? I am a photographer but I have interest in filming now.
I don't think I've ever clicked on a video notification so quickly ha. These videos are next level - you are in a league of your own here on TH-cam. Thanks for all you do!
Haha that makes me happy to hear, thanks for your kind words and support mate!
This shit is like hollywood !!!
Gaaa damn 😮💨
Thank you for the tips ❤

Proof that it's not the equipment but the artist. Stunning work.
this guy it's not bullshit, real advice from real experience and result, you earn a fan today.

An absolutely incredible, visually stunning and insanely informative video. Such a privilege to have been part of some of these videos!🙏🏼
The privilege is all mine, thanks bra!!!

Any links that would explain these?
@0_iAlmighty_0 I think if you search ROOM TONE IN FILM and contrast ratios you should be able to find some decent ones
Great tips!!!! I love that you added sound as a way of making images more cinematic but your shots are almost always moving which also makes them amazing, and that often requires a stabilizer.
one thing I learnt from Crafford is frame rate contrast, this is definitely the feature that differate the great film makers out ! and the final goal is too make the scene as dynamic and personal as It should be
Yay, glad to hear that! It made a huge difference for me when I started being intentional about frame rates
The sounds do such heavy, lifting. Really enjoyed the sounds around the dashboard of the vehicle, the wave sounds. I just about every sound. They were like treasures.
Contrast! In everything, but the contrast slider 😉 You will get it and appreciate it a lot, after you watch this brilliant video.

Thank you. I subscribed instantly. Such helpful content. I'm 80% finished with a feature film. But seeing this, I'm going back in. Thanks!
I know this video is not about this, but I'm wondering which picture profile you film in? How do you do color grading? Is it by hand? I ask because you said don't use LUTs.

Diversity in that regard would be benifitial as well. For example Paul Thomas Anderson movies. Or different colour grading, or light patterns should work as well.
But btw it's great tips about lighting
Thank you Jacques. This was brilliant, and extremely helpful.
You make it look easy and I love the examples. But, for me, this is hard to achieve. I simple don’t have “it.” I will continue to work towards these results and greatly appreciate this video.

Great video, also the aspect ratio helps a lot to make a video look more cinematic.
This is really helpful, however I feel like it needs to be mentioned that there is a difference between CONTRAST for visuals and DYNAMICS for the music. Those are 2 different terms and I feel need to be treated as such
Really helpful and inspiring
