  • Rupi Kaur was just 21 when her self-published book Milk and Honey thrust her onto a path to becoming one of the most famous poets in the world. At the heart of her success is the connection she made with the millions of people who saw themselves in her poems of heartbreak, trauma and the immigrant experience.
    It Changed Everything is a series hosted by CBC’s Ian Hanomansing and featuring interviews with some of the world’s most successful people, revealing the moments, decisions, and secrets that helped them break through.

      Heavy! She epitomises poetry that many of us can see ourselves in. Poetry is a platform o self expression and expression should not be minimised simply because she doesn’t fit the narrative of what poetry you understand .

    I am surprised at how many posts are not really positive. I am not an immigrant, but I can see by her poems what she and her family have gone through and how she has grown to know what it took for her parents to leave their homeland and appreciate it. The torment of being alone in any circumstance as a child as well as an adult when you have no means of communication. Poetry and art often has spoke of pain, injustice, suffering, love, loss, joy, rebounding, weakness, strength, beating the odds, beauty, shock, all with their own inside jokes, Easter eggs and puzzle-like hidden meanings. She has all of this in her poetry.

    I was honestly surprised to see this. I thought her first book (also my first re-entry into poetry) was such a weird use of pages. If it was a $5 book, then it wouldn't feel as weird paying for it. But to pay $20+ for a softcover of essentially IG stories seemed over the top compared to other anthology books. Can anyone who's a fan of hers explain what you personally get from her rather short work?

    • @normandy2501
      @normandy2501 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Galaxia I felt the same about the artwork as well. It would be cool of there was at least more of it, but (and she's not the only one doing this) there will be multiple, essentially blank pages in the book with so much negative space. As more of a minimalist myself, the concept within visual art isn't lost on me. But it just didn't feel substantial even as a quick read. I just wonder if I'm missing something lol.

    My position regarding Rupi Kaur's poetry is similar to Martin Scorsese's regarding Marvel movies. There is absolutely nothing wrong with liking her work, that you feel identified with her phrases, that you are moved by her life story. All of that is great. But what she writes is not poetry. Literature is an art that deserves respect, we must respect great writers and value true talent and effort. That does not mean that Rupi has no talent or that she has no merit. Personally, I give her full and complete credit as an influencer, public figure, opinion leader, internet personality and also as a visionary, businesswoman and activist (although I don't really buy her ideas that much)... but I can't give her credit as a poet because that would be disrespectful to poets, her lines are incomplete thoughts and little more than that. I would add that I think it is very audacious of her (in a good sense) to have taken her writings to the field of performance because, once again, she is a visionary woman and has known how to capitalize on the attention she has received, she has known how to jump on the bandwagon of fame and has been very astute (or maybe just intuitive and instinctive) in aligning herself with mainstream themes. Honestly, I'm glad for her success but I'm not happy at all for the decline in quality that all artistic disciplines are experiencing. I hope my appreciation of this author helps some people to broaden their horizons. Blessings to Rupi, by the way.

      She did not talk English in school because she had been silenced as a girl in her culture (probably why her mom doesn’t speak English)and teased in school until she entered a poetry class and performed before her class in school and loved it. She felt for the first time in her life she had been heard. Then went on to put her poetry on IG, decided to publish her own book of poetry. When it blew up on IG and sales blew up a publishing company offered her a deal. Then she began a book tour with engagements requested from all over the world. At least that’s what I gathered from watching this video.

      Women writers are easier to exploit because you change university curriculums, due to the adjustments and influence Feminism has. Her whole theme is Feminism and Minimalism. Not "The Self", not "America", not "Style". Someone is positioning her to be some sort of literary standard far from what American Poetry use to be.
